I have white rot in every bed my allotment but still grow onions every year. I have tried garlic and it does seem to help. One thing I do is to plant more and just accept that I am going to lose some of them. Also, I reduce how much I water. White rot loves humid conditions, once my sets have a good root I very rarely water my onions and just let nature take care of them naturally. Obviously, if there hasn't been any rain for months then you will need to water otherwise just leave them be. Finally, try golden bear, only available as seed but apparently shows good resistance to white rot - I have not tried these so cannot vouch for them.

Hello Graham, and thank you for your comment, there is some good advice in there and just what I want to hear, everyone says if you got white rot you can’t grow onions, and you have proved you can live with it, will make a note of Golden Brat for next season, take care kind regards………alan🌿

Hello Alan, I am keen to see how the garlic trial works, it would have been interesting to leave a bed untreated and compare crops in a treated bed??? Robinsons the giant onion growers have used the same beds for 160 years, I wonder how they manage it. The super soil is a wonderful addition to the beds with all the benefitial micronutrients 👍 Some interesting vids on here by herbal growers and how to produce your own mix. You have shared some useful info 😀 All the best 🌻🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻

Thanks Nigel, the beds with the field beans in haven’t been treated so I shall grow onions in both next season, im sure it won’t eradicate it all together but if I can control it and learn to live with it then that’s a winner, I shall put another dose on in June , it only used about a 5th of that tube so a tube should last two years, hope your season is going to plan Nigel, take good care kind regards……….alan🌿

The garlic wash worked for me, Alan. All white rot gone in 3 years. I used old garlic until I ran out and then "Lazy Garlic". I found it easier to use a sprayer to apply the SuperSoil but then my beds were planted at the time, and my rose was too big LOL. Did you know that there was a Public Consultation ending in 2 days about peat composts? I just uploaded a quick video about it if you wanted to do the survey. (sorry to advertise here!)

hi Steve, that’s very reassuring about the white rot, you have given me confidence in what I’m trying, and thanks for the info about the peat compost, I shall pop over to give my penneth worth, spraying the super soil was a great idea, even if it was accidental😂, many thanks kind regards………….alan🌿

@@ThedawnchorusPlot Well done mate. I was chatting with the CEO of the company and said how hard it was to apply sparingly with a watering can and he said "It's fine enough to use a sprayer" D'oh! So one allotment was sprayed, the other watered LOL

The birds are happy to see you in the garden!! It's funny how our perspective changes over time; the moles are a good example of that. Super Soil is interesting; if it goes well, it would be interesting to make your own and trial it against the store bought. You've basically built super soil over the past few years, full of natural mycorrhizal fungi and other nutrients. Very interesting Alan, time will tell Cheers Jason and Colleen 🌱🌱🌱

Interesting experiment! We do not currently have a problem with white rot but it is something I have read a fair bit about, and I think there is plenty of evidence to suggest that you should be able to manage it using this method - tricking the sclerotia to germinate. One factor worth considering is temperature. Like everything there is a min/max and a range within which germination is most effective. So the minimum would be round 9-10C, the maximum around 20-22C, and the optimum around 14-18C. I don’t know what your soil temperature is right now - could be just enough but I would guess that it is well below the optimum and treating a little later might be more effective. I shall follow this experiment with great interest and hope it goes well 👍😊

Hi Jonny, and thank you for the info, I’m planning to treat the ground on 3 occasions, I must admit I didn’t know about what temperature was the optimum, hopefully it will stay in the ground long enough to start the process, when I started putting it on my first thought was wow this would stop the carrot fly🤔 it is so pungent I can still smell it up the garden this lunch time 😂, take good care kind regards…………..alan🌿

Best of luck. I have noticed white rot in my white onion sets, so have cleared them out and the soil around them and am trying yellow onions to see if they grow successfully. I only had them in the ground a few minutes when I cam across a whole lot of suspect sets. It is not worth the risk when 90% were looking suspect. Wood ash is ideal to help any onions in any conditions, that is a wise choice, I do hope the garlic is successful, but am unsure if it would be as good as fresh crushed garlic. I have my fingers crossed for you.
@ThedawnchorusPlot
@ThedawnchorusPlot 2 года назад
many thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, white rot is so disheartening, the advice is don’t grow onions for many many years🥴, so we have to try anything, I think you are probably right about fresh garlic been a better option, onion sets are probably how I ended up with white rot, as I’m not on an allotment and nobody has a veg patch within half a mile of here, another option is to grow winter onions and freeze what I can’t use as they do freeze very well, but a veg garden in summer without onions isn’t right somehow, enjoy your week ahead, kind regards………….alan🌿

@@ThedawnchorusPlot I have watched a number of RU-vid videos regarding White Rot and have done some research. It appears the best option is to grow your onions from seed. I have to admit that I purchased my white onion setc via eBay, this was not the wisest decision.

I use garlic powder to dust my beds in my jungle plot and last year planted onions in one of the worst affected beds after a few years treatment and had a significant improvement in the unaffected onions. I usually dust after May as I want the soil to get warm enough for the spores to become active when I dust them on P.S. there's a couple of vids on my channel.

Why wood Ash?
@ThedawnchorusPlot
@ThedawnchorusPlot 2 года назад
Hello Sue and many thank for taking the time to watch and comment, wood ash is good the raise the ph levels in soil which is good for veg, the potash content is good for fruit and flower production (more flowers more peas and beans) and in brassicas it helps with club root and acts like a mild lime affect, but it’s not good for acid loving plants like blueberries, rhododendrons and rose’s , hope this helps, take good care kind regards……….alan🌿
