In the Jungle Plot Allium White Rot was rife so I would grow nice onions but they would rot in storage. White rot can last dormant in the ground for up to 15-20 years, so. this is what I’m doing to try and speed up it’s demise. For the last three years each bed has had a dusting once a season at least.

Great tip, thanks. Lost half my garlic harvest this year to white rot. I'll be using this powder when the bed's empty again (got beetroot in it now).

Thanks. You could add the powder to a watering can, fill it up and let it stand for an hour or so to soak and infuse the active ingredients then water it in. I think I'm going to do a mix of powder when the beds empty and infusion when theres crops in at least twice a year to hopefully knock it back more. I'll be treating all the beds with special attention given to the beds that had alliums last year and the beds that will have them in next year. Just waiting for my new tub of equine garlic powder to come now. The soil needs to be warm for the rot to activate so late spring through to late summer/eartly autumn might be the best time to treat the beds.

Hey Jason, when do you treat with garlic powder? In spring? And is it just once a year? Thank you
@jasons-jungle
@jasons-jungle 2 года назад
I start when the soil has warmed up mid to late May. I try to treat a couple of times if possible.

Thank you for sharing Jason, I love the theory behind your idea and if it comes to fruition it will help a lot of people,I look forward to seeing the outcome on this one. Take care kind regards alan🌿 THE DAWN CHORUS PLOT

Thanks. If you saw the Oerprie harvest that was in the same plot and no white rot. I’ll be planting some onions next year in this bed to see how they go and if the beds clear.

We tried applying garlic powder (bought from the supermarket) and a crushed garlic solution to a few beds last year. We then forgot and planted the garlic cloves in an untreaded bed and spent the winter kicking ourselves! So we'll be doing something similar again this year but making a proper note of it this time. I'll be interested to see what results you get. We had a few signs of white rot this year so there's definitely scope for improvement.

Oops. Well, hopefully they'll be clear for when you do get your garlic into them.

Nice Jason. I use the liquid so I can water the plantings after the alliums. Same same. Steve

I guess that using the garlic water will be easier if the beds planted. Garlic foliar spray is supposed to be good for the plants so you're getting 2 for 1 if you splash any.

Steve, how much garlic to water do you use and how much does that cover?
@DigwellGreenfingers

@@jasons-jungle I just smash up a whole bulb of garlic, swish it around in a 10L watering can and water (with the rose on to catch the bits) about 2 x 1m with it (the only place I have white rot so far).

Thank you Jason, one to remember to do on my new raised beds if I get any issues, would you use as a preventative measure? ♻️Happy Gardening........🥕Terry King 🌞

Thank Terry. To prevent transferring the rot to other beds make sure that you clean your tools between each bed using alcohol wipes/bleach /Jeyes fluid. Clean your hands using alcohol wipes. Don't use the bed as a nursery bed - transplanting your brassicas to other beds could carry it along with the rootball. Don't spread root crops from infected beds on other beds - infected soil could be carried across and drop off. Basically you want to prevent transferring soil out of infected beds to clean beds. If it works I plan on using this in the future to dust (or possibly use water infused with crushed garlic) on the bed a year before and a year after growing alliums.

Any onions that do get white rot will perish in storage but can be cooked, chopped and frozen or dehydrated without problems

@@jasons-jungle How ironic you emphasise cleaning your hands with alcohol wipes and here I am reading your comment in July 2020 when the emphasis is to use alcohol hand sanitiser like it's going out of fashion to stop another type of disease.. Thanks for the advice. Take care, Poo

think that I'll plant some Overwintering onions and garlic in one of the worse beds this year to see how its come on

Jason, this is very interesting - I've heard about using 'garlic infused water' before but never heard of using Garlic powder - (couldn't hear where you said you got it from?). What is your assessment after 3 years? I have had white rot in very small amounts over the 22 years i've been on my plot, but this year its definitely worse - this could be the solution! thanks for sharing.
@jasons-jungle
@jasons-jungle 5 лет назад
Thanks. I got it from an equine supplier on ebay. So far I've only planted one lot of alliums in this plot - a bed full of Oerprei) there's a harvesting video up) but no white rot visible at all. Next year I'll be planting a bed of onions and shallots in this bed as well to see if this is clear. I think that if it appears to be working I'll be doing a pre/post treatment and use either garlic water or powder on the beds that had alliums the previous year and are going to have alliums the following year
