Some reno channels give me a sense of being overwhelmed by the project but for some reason your channel gives me a very calm and confident feeling that you have can do this. I always enjoy your vlogs!!!

We won't lie - sometimes the overwhelm does raise its head but mostly we just take it little by little. We bought the mill so that we could enjoy the process and complete the project as a couple so we try to just enjoy it. Also it helps that Rich is a builder so he is calm in the face of restoration adversity! 😂 Glad you enjoy the vlogs 😁

Beautiful stone wall you are recreating. Tell us more about when you plan to start work on the main house and what your approach will be to start the work. Many of us are interested in knowing more about that.

For sorting out the dirt, I would suggest buying some hardware cloth of different densities and frame the cloth with 1x2 (I'm from the U.S.) and sift shovel loads at a time.

I love the effort you’re all putting in to the videography, camerawork, editing and narrative in the last few weeks, it really makes a huge difference. Love the treasure shelf it’s going to end up full of stuff you’ll enjoy for years. Great to see that proper strong and safe scaffold can actually be found in France 😉 stonework is looking great and you got so much done in a shift. Mercy Buckets.

I am pretty sure that glass light is from an art deco lamp, it would have been a lady holding up a flame (your glass being the flame). I know these are very sought after as they usually break and art deco fans need them to replace their broken one. I would have a look on the internet and research it, you could get a few quid towards the restoration from it :) Teamwork with the wall. Be careful with that glass ridden floor, especially when sitting on it
@moulinroche
@moulinroche Год назад
Yes it does look like that doesn't it. We will do a bit of googling and see what we come up with. Don't worry, I am wearing work trousers with padding in all the right places and I definitely check before I sit down 🧐😂
@Leed216
@Leed216 Год назад
You need a soil screen sifter. A wooden frame with some screening on it, shake the soil through into a wheel barrow and find your treasures or glass on top of the screen
@moulinroche
@moulinroche Год назад
Yes I have something like that too but scraping seems to work the best to get it done more quickly

After you finish this wall you‘ll be qualified to repair the Great Wall of China😂, did you know they found rice in their mortar and this gave the mortar more strength, you both must have been pleased with the results, mammoth effort
@moulinroche
@moulinroche Год назад
Ha that's really interesting. Maybe we should add some baguettes into the mortar 🤔
@talullahlabelle
@talullahlabelle Год назад
Will that wall need any form of buttressing being so tall or is there going to be a building behind it?? 😎👏👍
@moulinroche
@moulinroche Год назад
No it should be fine as the bottom bit is built directly up against the bedrock so it's not retaining anything. 🪨

I don't know why but I was thinking you'd use some tie rods or something like rebar to tie the existing wall to the section you built - next time maybe - it's still going to be strong without. Good to see you making a good job of it. The rusted handtool - you might, it could have been a plane - John, the guy who is 'Scoutcrafter' might have a good idea if you add a comment to one of his videos. I thought it might be some form of old farming tool - one day, we'll find out....!
@moulinroche
@moulinroche Год назад
Hi Steve there's no need for rebar when the wall is 50cm thick. The new stonework is toothed into the old wall and is in fact now the strongest element of the entire wall as the mortar is new. Next week's vlog shows us completing the wall and pointing in other sections around the infill so hopefully my ramblings will make sense.

Wow, what a project! Love it.... but, but don't understand why you're putting so much effort in the wall and things outside and didn't start with the house. I imagine that the rental house isn't for free and the longer the roof of the millhouse is leaking, the worse it gets. But I'll keep on watching and finaly you will start on the house 😉😂

The doors and surrounding masonry were at the point of collapsing down onto us. The decision was made to repair the wall the day we came into work and found several large pieces of stone had fallen down overnight.

Could that glass light fitting be Lalique?
@elizabethmckelvie5418
@elizabethmckelvie5418 Год назад
That small moulded, flame shade was mass produced in France….just ordinary satin glass. Nothing like the many factories making opalescent glass…Lalique being the top maker
@moulinroche

I wish! As Elizabeth said I think it's mass produced - pretty though

that "planer" looks too clunky and the wood too rough for a planer imho. i can't imagine someone using a piece of wood with a knot in the middle for an infill plane. My uneducated guess would be that the metal bracket is supposed to go on the end of a beam and then the bolts? secure it in plate and the thing that sticks out could be a handle like a lock gate or it's a big hinge ?
@lemongrass02057
@lemongrass02057 Год назад
You seem to have done away with the gates that were there previously. I thought a nice feature to have been reinstated and possibly quite useful?
@moulinroche
@moulinroche Год назад
Unfortunately they were too far gone to be reinstated we have kept them though so hopefully we will find a use somewhere even if only for decorative purposes. They were actually a door into the former mill building which has long since been demolished. It was actually quite dangerous as they led from the road onto a drop of about 10 metres. So for both safety and security filling it in was the best solution.

The wall is looking really good, a lot of hard work but so worth it. Another channel I watch are pointing their house with a tool that attaches to a drill, it looks like an icing bag but hard plastic. I’m not very good at describing things 😂 but it saved them so much time using it. Being that that is your trade, I’m guessing you know exactly what I mean.
