Blue pikmin most likely need at least *one* new special thing to make them better, since even if everything you say will be true, at the end game, blue pikmin will only be useful for getting things completely submerged in water, so some sort of new ability, or more underwater/deep water based terrain will most likely be needed to make the usefulness of blues actually felt Some points to completment this, itd be very much preferable that they get a new abillity as that would make the blue pikmin less "keys" (useful because its nesesary) and more "tools" (useful as they can be helpful outside of the occassions they are nesesary, or related obstacle/hazard). for example, red pikmin are more "tools" as outside of the required fire, they deal 1.5x damage, which is helpful in pretty much every combat situation to be honest though, i just want blue pikmin to have more of a use then just "see water, get blues" and have actual merrit to bring them places they arent required

It could be cool how if blue pikmin instead of being charged, they can fire off little water bullets directly towards far away enemies. @VantageEmblem
@VantageEmblem Год назад
Do they NEEED it to be good, though? I feel like having them as a “stock type” works really well for them, especially in the context of Pikmin 1. In later games they’ve just become more and more samey given the wide variety of more complex types that have come along. I think there’s strength in that simplicity. That said, I think if they’re going to be upgraded in any way, it should be something passive, such as a stat boost like you suggested.
@lasercraft32
@lasercraft32 Год назад
Blue Pikmin should have stronger grip strength than other Pikmin (for example, when an enemy tries to shake off the Pikmin, the Blues are more likely to stay on compared to other types). The reason I want them to do this is because in Super Smash Bros, Olimar's Pikmin each have different strengths and weaknesses (reds are stronger but have weaker throws, yellows have 1.5x more range, purples hit really hard but have less range, and whites are weaker in every aspect but have stronger pummels when latched onto opponents). But since water plays no direct constant role in Smash Bros, Blue Pikmin were given increased grab/throw strength to make up for it. It would be a neat callback and turn what used to be a creative liberty into a solid reference.

when you pull out blues, you aren’t thinking “Oh yeah this will be a great asset to my team because blues have an amazing power that makes me *want* to use them!” You are thinking, “Ugh, there is something fully underwater so I have to waste pikmin slots because I *NEED* to get that thing.” Pikmin have wants, and needs, but blues only have needs.

I typically get pretty excited that there’s something to use blues for. I think it’s okay if they’re needed to grab something, it’s just not necessarily done effective. Pikmin 1 tends to do it much better imo than 3, and 2 still does it well. They’re just a little underutilized in 3, imo.

If you have a limited number of them from only being able to make them in caves you aren't going to be able to freeze every body of water on the map so the water shortcuts for blues still may be useful. We also don't know the limits on how big a body of water they can freeze and how the presence of enemies or other objects may affect that.

I personally think blue pikmin will be fine in Pikmin 4 for the reasons you described and because I think they are unlocked early. I also believe that either wing pikmin or a not revealed pikmin type will be the last pikmin type you unlock, so blues will still be useful for a while. Personally I like how there are so many ways to traverse water. It really opens up the level design and adds more variety to gameplay by letting you use multiple types. It also means that there will be way more water in this game, which helps since another issue with Blues is that they're only useful within very small specific areas. Even then I still think Blue Pikmin NEED an additional ability. Pretty much every other Pikmin type serves a function in combat. Sure, you may argue the Blues can survive water-based attacks and attack aquatic enemies. The problem is, is that water-based attacks pose very little threat and aquatic enemies are just boring to fight since you're stuck just using the same weak Pikmin. Compare it to land-based combat where you have way more variety. One idea I had that would improve Blue Pikmin is to simply make them harder to be shaken off (for example the enemy probably has to do the shaking animation twice in order to shake them off). They're still not exactly a fighting powerhouse, but it's still a useful ability to have both solo and in conjunction with other Pikmin.

I think there’s a beautiful simplicity to blues, however. I like the shake off idea because it’s not anything extra for the player to have to manage, it’s passive. If they’re going to get a buff like that, it needs to be passive. Imo, blues are fine as is provided the level design plays to their strengths. Using blues should represent a challenge where you can only bring the most basic of Pikmin with you, greatly upping the difficulty
@aidankocherhans9861
@aidankocherhans9861 Год назад
I don't think this addresses the issue that other youtubers have stated, that blue pikmin have always been a pikmin you need, but dont want. You want red pikmin because of their attack power, or wings because of their carrying versatility, but you'd never want blues in a non water situation. Also "blues will be good until you get wings" is a terrible argument for blues not needing a buff. I definitely think they need some new ability to be something you'd want to have in many different situations instead of just one. Making a water dungeon of sorts wouldn't solve the issue, it would essentially just limit you to one pikmin type with no special abilities.
@VantageEmblem
@VantageEmblem Год назад
The thing is, I don’t see that as an issue. Blue Pikmin being required is still fine - you don’t need to take every Pikmin with you in every scenario. In fact, I think having certain Pikmin better suited to different scenarios only increases the strategy aspect of the game, as you have to plan out who you are bringing with at the start of the day rather than just getting 20 of each type more or less

I know this video is a month old, but I wanted to touch on some points brought up in this video for posterity sake if nothing else. 1: You can get blues in the first area, giving you access to all 3 base types really early. 2: Oatchi CAN transport things through water, but only AFTER he learns to swim, AND you train him to be able to do such. If anything, I argue this allows oatchi to complement the blues, as there may be treasures that are quite heavy underwater, and having oatchi be able to help the blues get it out would be a huge help. 3: You can carry things across frozen water, HOWEVER. The bigger the body of water, the more ice pikmin it takes to freeze it. Meaning if a body of water is big enough, it wouldn’t be practical to freeze it before trying to transport whatever it is you need to transport unless there are other hazards on the other side of the water that blues couldn’t handle.

To solve puzzles, but it takes longer, which is bad outside caves cause your still on a timelimit (Yellows dig faster, so they'll get buried items at a faster rate) All I have to say is, remove the Pinks ability to easily get things in water (sans big things) and Waters get a buff, also since Yellows got Whites digging ability, Blue's need a unique too

After submerging them maybe they could have 1.2× to carrying speed or damage on land for a limited time? Or maybe they could spit water like others have suggested? Anything that changes water from "just a hazzard" to something blues could actively benefit from aside from just being able to swim.

I think the issue with Blue Pikmin have been, that they're a necessity and not a choice. In Pikmin 4 they are even MORE pushed to Submerged treasure? Gotta have Blue Pikmin. No underwater item? Literally no reason to have Blue Pikmin. Adding more submerged treasure or adding in further "Blue Pikmin Required" scenarios doesn't solve the problem that Blue Pikmin don't have any characteristics so you'd WANT to use them outside of their required section.
@trevordonaldson7634
@trevordonaldson7634 Год назад
For example; Yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and can be thrown higher. There are sections where it's required to use Yellow however there are enemies and bosses where they aren't a requirement and could be done with literally any other Pikmin, but Yellow Pikmin's throw height can be used as an added advantage. So that's Yellow and Red have always been slightly stronger and thus even when not needed for fire, were still useful. That's NOT Blue Pikmin.. so yeah they aren't "useless" when a game designer makes them "required".. but they are useless outside of the very one specific purpose they have no matter how many instances of that you put into the game. Which wouldn't really be an issue if ALL Pikmin were super niche or at least the original three all were on the same playing field.

The other pikmin have reasons to always have them with you: reds have a damage bonus, rocks have an even bigger damage bonus (but with a downside so you still use reds), yellow has more range, white can see stuff that's buried, and purples and pinks are just really good overall. There's no functional reason to keep blues with you unless you know they're required. I don't know what but we're talking Nintendo, so they could probably figure it out.

@VantageEmblem Год назад
At the same time, I feel like the fact that they DON'T have any abilities like this makes them more interesting. You are disadvantaged when moving through water, since you lose that 1.5x or greater attack power boost. Going through water becomes a challenge, and enemies in water are by default harder than on land. It's what makes emperor bulblaxes a lot scarier in Pikmin 2 near water than on land, where they can be absolutely deleted by purples. The submerged castle restricts purples and bans reds, making even the most basic enemies much scarier. There's merit to having the Blue Pikmin be a little "worse" statistically, but there's not merit to keeping them in the game if there's absolutely no need for them within the game's progression.

after going into water or being hit with a water hazard, blue pikmin should get a little drop of dew on their leaf, this would give them the ability to do critical strikes that deal significantly more damage than regular attacks, you can tell when one is performed when a rainbow sparkle appears while attacking. After doing a critical strike however, the dew will be removed and will have to be reapplied, unless in water where critical strikes can be done at any time due to the constant application of water. Alternatively, this dew can be used like a prism, and can refract light, perhaps making for some interesting puzzles where you have to direct light into sensors… or into the eyes of some poor bulborb. Having the dew does make blue pikmin more susceptible to ice attacks though, freezing almost instantly.

@VantageEmblem
@VantageEmblem Год назад
I think that's what makes the Blue Pikmin stand out: they are weaker, but still decidedly necessary. It's always a challenge to have to use Blue Pikmin, and even the most basic enemies in the water are more dangerous, since you lose the 1.5% attack power of reds, and the even stronger attack boosts of other types, plus you can't bring types immune to hazards that some aquatic enemies may use (crushing from wollywogs, for example). I think a lot of what makes the blues unfun is not their lack of abilities, which can create an interesting challenge, but the way in which they tend to be required, which is decidedly an issue with level design. Even Pikmin 1, when they are most central to the game, has them as completely sidestepable in the Forest of Hope by skilled players. Pikmin 4 presents an opportunity for Blue Pikmin to have a space where they have something above all other pikmin - underwater access. Because there are other types that can go in water, it gives a reason to choose blues: they can compete with these other types in their own domain by being the most skilled at dealing with underwater threats.

So my idea to make blues better and I know that they aren't the best as you wouldn't really ever use them unless you HAVE TO which is sad. So my idea is that with blue Pikmin in the water it starts up to fill up a water gauge of some sort and this would play into a bigger idea of mine which would be having the OG trio have support abilities for others. Reds can breather fire after being charged up with it, Yellows could boost speed, and blues could heal the captain as maybe that would be important in some way like needing to have a certain percentage of health to be able to keep track of these abilities or else you can't keep track and thus can't use it. Not only that but I think that once blues are in water their damage is doubled and once they're out of the water the deal more and more damage to enemy's as more blue Pikmin pile on signifying that they are drowning the creature or something but it drains the water gauge. Or maybe only blues should have this type of support mechanic and the yellows and reds get something else? I don't know but that's just my idea!
@VantageEmblem
@VantageEmblem Год назад
The problem I have with an idea like this is, regardless of how cool it is (and it is a really cool idea), the Pikmin devs have constantly battled with making the pikmin too complex, ever since the development of the very first game. If you wanted to go about making the blues stronger, it needs to be something passive. That said, I actually think that blues are pretty well balanced right now. Though they are "weaker" than other types in terms of other bonuses, it actually plays to make them more interesting, since any enemy underwater is, thus, automatically tougher than they are on land
@jonlevidalkvistagustsson6134
@@VantageEmblem The number 1 problem you see which is why I and many others think they need a buff and I agree as they are my favorite Pikmin, is because there is no reason you woukd put them on your team unless you either 1: Plan to go into a water section or 2: just have them incase you run into water. Those are the only good reasons and they don't have good enought just general use.

Plus, Oatchi doesn’t seem to be able to go underwater, just kinda paddling at the surface.
