It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1991 Volvo 460 1.7 GLE Injection Automatic, we get caught in the rain, experience a terribly rattly dashboard, get excited about a beige leather interior (once again), reference a video made by Ian Seabrook from HubNut in the Netherlands and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

I haven’t seen one of them in years! In the early 2000’s my girlfriend’s (now wife) father had a G reg 460 GL that he inherited from his late father, it wasn’t in the best condition. He broke down one Friday evening 100 miles away from home, it was a faulty alternator & flat battery & he didn’t have breakdown cover so I volunteered to go & get him. We left the car at the side of the road & came home with the battery which was recharged overnight. Next morning I took him to a local scrapyard for a replacement alternator & we set off on the 100 mile journey back to repair & collect the Volvo. On arriving at the Volvo my father in law discovered he had left the key for the car at home!!! However since I had not long been courting his fine daughter I restrained myself from giving him a barrage of expletives 🤣 I deserved a medal! We had to drive all the way home & back again, just over 600 miles in total between the 3 trips. Thankfully the repair was successful but the Volvo didn’t last much longer & died about a year later. Good memories & an interesting purchase sir 👏🏻

Yes, that would have been one of the very first 460s in the country! That sounds like a crazy number of trips to sort out that problem. The car wouldn't have really been worth anything at the time either. The rarity of these cannot be overemphasised now, especially in early pre-facelift form like this. It needs a fair few jobs doing, but then we have Mr Coleman, so he will get it sorted, I am sure.... Thank you for watching!

A great buy! My grandfather had a G plate white GLE? Manual Injection from brand new. I remember I thought it looked great, especially as the hatchback had a spoiler. It had a grey velour interior. However, he was convinced it was a Friday car as he had lots of problems with it cutting out, possibly due to a faulty injector. He only kept it a year and got a brand new late H plate run out 340 ‘catalyser’ which he was much happier with. A couple of years later he got a British racing green 460 XI which gave no trouble and he kept for many years until he passed away. Happy memories of being a passenger in this era of Volvo. Good luck with bringing this up to scratch. Yours is an interesting colour. I think there was a huge choice of colours back then compared with today.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Yes, the GLE was only initially available as a manual. On a G registration, it would have been one of the very first 460s in the country (unless it was a 440), but it could have been a GLT if it had a rear spoiler. You are right, the 340 was discontinued in 1991. The 460 Xi would have been a bit more basic than a GLE/GLT. The colour range in the 440s and 460s was quite good, actually.

Nice buy! shame it isn’t optioned with the Info-centre though. As a 400 series owner, I do know a fair bit about them. -Rear electric windows were standard on the CD. Not sure if the GLE could be optioned with them. -The 2.0 engine was actually introduced in 1993 and makes pretty much the same power as the Turbo, while getting better MPG than the 1.7s. 110hp was a conservative figure estimate from Volvo. -on the point of the later models being available with any engine, this is true with the exception of the diesel, which wasn’t available in CD spec. -The drivers door lock should light up in the dark when you pull the handle - The beige leather interior was indeed an option on the GLE and is incredibly rare. I’ve only ever come across the black leather before. - The ‘S’ model on the later facelift cars is perhaps my favourite. It was mid-ish spec, but came with a crazy pink upholstery pattern, fold out child seats built into the rear seat cushions and a small waste paper bin with a lid that neatly fit into the centre console compartment!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Yes, I have driven a 1997 440 2.0 CD Automatic, so I saw just how much equipment they had, including the rear electric windows, full leather interior with wood, air conditioning, etc. The dashboard seems substantially better quality on the later ones. I imagine Volvo had to substantially change their engine line up for 1993 due to Euro I regulations, and fit fuel injection and catalytic converters to all their cars, like many other brands. I don't know what fuel economy this will do, will have to do it the old-fashioned way.... We don't talk about diesels on this channel, sir, so my comment still stands! The S specification seems quite rare these days, but there is one on eBay at the moment for an outrageous sum of money. I did at least get to see those features on it you mentioned, such as the fold out child seats, weird seat fabric, and the tiny bin. I have never seen a 440 or 460 with a beige leather interior, this could be one of the only ones left with one, but I wouldn't be too sure...

Thanks Joseph, that looks a nice motor for the money you paid for it, looks tidy. I had the facelift 440 on an N plate back in 2011, I paid very little for it, less than £500, it was nice to drive, it had the 1.8 Renault engine, it was ok except it would occasionally cut out at traffic lights etc and would be difficult to restart, I later straight swapped it for a Daihatsu Hijet van. Hope this car serves you well sir and you get the issues sorted on it.

This is amazing. One thing you mentioning it having the catalytic converter, I don't know if they use the same as other older Volvos, but old Volvos are known to have valuable cats so do be careful if it has a high value one. What a survivor though, so glad that you managed to get it out of the ULEZ. What is parts availability like for one of these?
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Yes, it's only a small catalytic converter. It could even be a Renault one. Parts availability is not particularly good for things like body panels and some interior bits, but as so many cars used this engine and transmission, service parts are OK.

@levelcrossing150
@levelcrossing150 Год назад
Well Mr Lloyd Consulting that is a fine example of a Volvo 460, and I must say that's a particilarly beautiful shade of a beige leather interior. It's got cracking bodywork with very little to be done. A nice coat of paint on the wheel trims would give it a great lift too. Thank you for letting me know. 👍
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
I have been offered some 480 ES alloy wheels for it, which would look great, but I think three out of the four tyres are perfectly good, so we may keep it original now. Mr Coleman and I have discussed the wheel silver already. The bodywork is not going to be changed, apart from treating that one area of rust, as it is part of the character of the car.
@levelcrossing150
@levelcrossing150 Год назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Alloys are always very nice but I'm one for keeping my car with an ex factory look too and I think keeping the trims keeps it more genuine and original. The only thing I MIGHT be tempted to do is finish them off with a nicer silver. I'm not familiar with the finish of these trims, but from what I can see from the video the silver does look a little matt finished and lacklustre, rather like the wheel silver we used to respray steels on used cars for resale years ago. I might be tempted into using a more shinier silver but same shade colour which would look nice, give more body to the paint and repel dirt so much more. It's personal choice though.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

I mean, sir, the interior quality could do with being better (the switches don't feel very nice, and that rattly dashboard is quite annoying), but it is 32 years old, and at least the ergonomics are reasonable for 1991. Thanks for this video. We had the 440 in New Zealand - rare as hen's teeth. However, this is a new one on me. I like the rear styling and color, makes the car very Honda or Rover-like until you see it from the front. In fact my Honda and my first car, a 1986 Celica, are/were a remarkably similar color! Do you know what it is called? Honda called it 'Champagne,' Toyota 'Moroccan Sand!' I just put it as 'Gold' in forms!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Yes, the 460s are ridiculously rare in this country, and probably everywhere else too. The styling does very much date from the same era as the R8 Rover 200 and 400, and the 440 was released in the UK in the same year (1989) as the 200, with the 400 coming out the same year as this (1990).

That interior colour (especially the dash) looks great - so much brighter than the usual black / grey trim….before you completely rule out the cvt I would recommend driving one - they may be unreliable but they are unfathomably smooth (above 10 mph…!), and theoretically you would only have to rebuild it once…or twice…over the cars lifetime!

@@lloydvehicleconsulting You are right except for the 260. That finished production in the early to mid 80's when the 760 came along. Yes, sorry, I was going to write 460! The 340 staying in production until 1991 was the most amazing of all, in my opinion, as that should have really died in the early to mid 1980s, but they seemed to get better and better, and a post 1986 facelift 360 GLE is the best of all.
