It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time we examine a 1988 Volvo 740 GL belonging to Mr Matt Richardson of ‪@furiousdriving‬ , and I keep a promise I made by actually reviewing it over six months after the initial walkaround! Be prepared for yet more very soft suspension, annoying, yet charming seatbelt warning lights (again), modest acceleration (again), a very nice original radio, a novel way of holding the boot option, rather nice seats, a very long throw gearlever, a high level brake light, lots and lots of engine options and generally little of any consequence at all... Nothing untoward, then!
1988 Volvo 740 2.0 GL Walkaround (with furiousdriving): • 1988 Volvo 740 2.0 GL ...
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

A brick on wheels ! A friend bought a 760 when he retired in 1986 , it was the most luxurious car I’d ever been in at the time, he kept it for 15 years after which he brought a Mercedes which to say the least he didn’t like !

Oh sir, everyone loves these 740s and 760s and I am no exception. The 760 sounds wonderful, I do hope to get hold of one at some point.

One of my favourite cars on Matt's fleet. The era when Volvos were big, boxy and built like tanks is what I grew up knowing (like you I grew up with a 240 and my aunt and uncle had the 740) so I always remember them fondly and I think this one, with such a low number of owners, deserved to be saved and kept original. Aside from the welding it seems to have given Matt a lot less hassle than some other members of the fleet. Hope he hangs on to it. I recognise that Richardson driving route too.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Ah yes, sir! I use the route when I am down there because it works... I do understand why people like these old Volvos so much, and I cannot believe how cheap they still are. The welding was a bit of a pain, but now it is in good useable daily condition. It may yet go to the Santa Pod Challenge if we can get ourselves organised for next year. The number of people who were impacted by these in their childhood is amazing.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting yes if he's managed to keep his spend under £500 then it sounds like it would still qualify. I don't imagine it being the sort of car that would do dragster-style wheelies but I'm sure it would be a comfy place to be

@@lloydvehicleconsulting it looked like a lot of fun from yours and Matt's videos and I liked the additiona points for fuel economy and purchase price too. From all the years of watching the Top Gear challenges the low budget ones were always my faves and great to see people doing their own. @@alansimpson835 , yes, the Santa Pod Challenge was brilliant, and we did intend to come back in March, but...you know the rest! Mr Richardson could not help but love his Volvo 740. For decades these cars have been built to be strong, safe, dependable, comfortable, practical and have a minimum 20 year lifespan. I have owned 2 consecutive Volvo V70s and can testify that they are all of these things plus they come equipped with the best driver's seat in any vehicle. I can find no negative comments to make about this car.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Oh sir! I very much did enjoy driving this car. Extremely comfortable, easy to get in and out, very reliable mechanics, but of course interesting handling and less than stellar fuel economy. You don't buy a 740 for its fuel economy and entertaining dynamics, though. You are right about the seats in a V70, absolutely lovely!

Facts are spot on Joseph! Here in the US we would have the 740GLE or GLT, both would have the turbo 4 with an intercooler. Same with the 760. I believe most would purchase a Volvo because of reliability and its inherent safety. And I know this gives Matt pleasure whilst driving, not the fastest, but utterly dependable of his fleet of vehicles. I also subscribe to furiousdriving, so I have been watching the improvements that have been made to this Volvo since becoming part of the fleet. I like thar the power is linear, not the quickest, but cruises effortlessly while driving. An excellent video!

Yes, bought for a twice postponed challenge, but still on the fleet, I filmed it back in March, and I really enjoyed finally driving it. My parents certainly bought the 240 estate for its safety and perceived reliability, although ours was not that fault free. Lots of my channel viewers also love furiousdriving, and Mr Richardson and I do a lot of collaborations, as you may have seen. I like the good old viscous fan in this red block engine, reminds me of my childhood!

My '90 740GL has been getting me reliably to and fro for over 20 years. It has never let me down and is used as a daily driver - summer and winter. Completely constructed from 'Zincrometal' it has virtually no issues with rust and few issues with anything else. With 440,000 kilometers it still has it's original engine and automatic transmission - both untouched - and looks and drives like the day I bought it. Being a model assembled in Halifax, Nova Scotia for the Canadian market it has a few more standard features than Matt's. A/C, sunroof, power rear windows were all standard. The engine is the larger B230F rather than the B200E in Matt's. I highly recommend any RWD Volvo from that era; 240, 740, 760, 940 and even the 960. They are some of the most reliable and durable cars ever built. I wouldn't drive anything else!

I just bought a 1990 volvo 740 gl here in Canada. Lovely condition. Only serious rust was on the rocker. A small hole about a 1/4 and the drip edge on the rocker and floor rust flush so i had to close it up with body shop grade epoxy. My other volvo 760 gle has no rust at all, but in north america prv parts are near impossible to get. That why i bought the 740. It will cost me very little to safety.

Can't beat brushed Draylon fabric, we had an 86 C reg. With self leveling rear suspension for towing. The 2.3 was lovely. Most luxurious car we had as a kid. Loved the steering. It would go lock to lock but then you could push it further for almost taxi like turning.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes indeedy. One thing I like about those old Volvos is the simple straightforward design of the light clusters. They are a decent size and the individual lights are easily distinguishable. I find that the light clusters on modern vehicles to be a poor cluttered design. All those little Led bulbs appear too compacted together, especially the brake and indicator bulbs. The circular cluster designs for the rear indicator and the brake lights are really annoying. The outer ring of bulbs is the indicator and the inner ring is the brake. When they are lit up, they just don't appear as clear compared to older style light clusters. The light clusters on that Volvo 740 are excellent, you can't miss them when they are lit up.
