BPH is not just an "old man's problem." Steve is a 51 year-old patient who shares his BPH journey and how it improved his quality of life. He recounts how he decided to finally seek help and the workup he went through prior to surgery. He shared his TURP ("roto rooter") surgical course and recovery, as well as sexual function changes. It's not what you think would happen!
Hear what advice he has to share regarding treating urinary symptoms.

Steve has a good doctor. My doc says TURP is the "gold standard" of all the surgical interventions. Rather than go right into the TURP procedure, my doc started me on the hormone therapy route. Bicalutimide, with finesteride and doxazosin mesylate, with positive results. Prostate was reduced in size, and PSA is below 1. Cancer was present in it's infancy stage, low grade, and after 2 years readings on the cancer show it has been vastly reduced. 2 biopsies have been done. Urine flow is better, slow, but steady. Night time bathroom visits are now 1 to 2 per night. I have the normal urge or sensation when needing to urinate. TURP may be in my future, but for now my doc is monitoring and we're having success in this course of action.

I'm on day 5 of my TURP, still catheterized until my follow-up in 4 days. So far it's been much better than one can expect. Pain is minimal, so far. I've been on this journey of prostate dysfunction for almost 30 years or more. Im now 70. I'm glad it's done. I hope it lasts.

Congrats! It should work well for you, as it does for many who have gone before you.

@@Sunriseurology1 Thank You so much for your videos. I can't tell you how helpful and reassuring they've been. As you know the fear of pain, or a bad outcome stops many men from this procedure. You should know that, you have helped console these fears so much. Thanks again.

Great video, so informative. I had the TURP procedure on 12th June . I did stay overnight and have the catheter which was flushing my bladder constantly with saline overnight but by morning the urine was clear..catheter removed and home in the afternoon. I have only had minor bleeding once. I was intrigued by your procedure that virtually stops all bleeding during the surgery. The button electrode resectoscope. I think this method of no overnight stay and no catheter will appeal to more people for sure. i also have slightly stonger erections, orgasms strong, but no ejaculation which is a bit ''disappointing'' to start with but the ability to pee freely is far more important to me... Dont delay guys, please shelve any doubts and get the procedure done sooner rather than later .

Good informative video. I had a TURP procedure done on 16th August. Discharged with catheter on 18th. On 23rd Cath was removed and the flow was not good. Hence re cath done and removed on 4th Sept. Still flow is not good. Taking Tabs. Niftss for 5 daysand Bethanechol for 10 days. My prostate was of 102 cc before TURP. Now every one hour I have to pass urine. Starting is a problem. Flow is not good. What has gone wrong with my TURP? I am scary of re treatment. On 27th June had AUR and cath was fixed for 10 days and after removing the cath was on Sildoo D8 and during the period before TURP flow wad good.

Thanks so much for all your videos DOCTOR! I’m scheduled for a TURP procedure in two weeks with plasma, but not the button method. I’ve been told I will wear a catheter for a few days and I’m fine with that because I’ve already had that delightful experience because of all my recent retention issues. Also, I’ve been told my enlarged median lobe is main issue, and wondered how you handled that complication with your patients? By the way, I just turned 70.

TURPs work extremely well with median lobes. Good luck to you, although you won't need it!

OMG thanks so much! My urologist Dr. Yenning Chuang at SoCal Kaiser Hospital is wonderful to tolerate all my questions and is very anxious to tackle that median-lobe first and foremost. My case is a little unusual because BPH symptoms had been very gradual, until this April when a minor elbow surgery/general anesthesia impaired my bladder to where I unknowingly built up 1400ml leading to "emergency" catheter draining at Dr. office a month later! @@Sunriseurology1

Along with bladder neck stricture, add the eventual build up of scar tissue within the prostate recreating the same symptoms causing pressure on the urethra once more. New use of steroids to try to diminish the swelling, which have their own considerable side effects. This scar tissue hyperplasia hypertrophy may necessitate doing the procedure over again....and over again..... Would like to hear from Dr. Lin about the possibility of infection. After all, this is an open wound being discussed here. If steroids are given to minimize swelling, they impair wound healing

Urethral stricture and bladder neck contracture can occur with any cystoscopic surgery. It usually does not rapidly recur. Steriods may cause untoward side effects, and are not routinely used for TURP. Infection risk is very low, as we make sure patients don't have any infection symptoms before surgery. Antibiotics are routinely given within one hour prior to surgery to minimize infection risks.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer some years ago now ( Gleason 6). And have been on ‘Active Surveillance’ since then. The cancer hasn’t advanced but I’ve had enlarged prostate for a few years ( 90cc) and feel like this needs treatment now. But I’m unsure if I should have a TURP, or go for a radical prostatectomy in view of the cancer. Any thoughts please? I’m a fit 70 year old living in the UK.
