I can't express my appreciation enough man. I was having such a hard time diagnosing this issue and turns out to be the neutral safety switch. I'm very thankful for your video!
Glad it helped. The neutral safety switch was not the focus of this video but I knew it was one of the reasons of a new start since I've had it happen before. Glad you got it fixed and a bet pretty saved you some $$$
I really appreciate the way you broke it down from the simplest in front and you've probably paved a way for me to finish fixing my truck, that I've been working on for 3 days, thanks man
Great video. Always take the easiest path(s) to ultimately get to the solution. My 2001 Ford F150 recently died a 1/4 mile away from my house and was towed home. Had a crank no start issue Previously I cleaned the 2 computer grounds adjacent to the starter solenoid and the truck ran great til it died. I did not realize there was a 3rd computer ground located on the front driver side radiator mount. Cleaned the ground and the truck started.
Sometimes it's not the battery, solenoid switch or starter; the electrical cables can be corroded and you can have a high resistance connection. Clean with fine sandpaper or a wire brush made of a similar metal (dissimilar metals can cause corrosion, given moisture and some time).
Thank you indeed!!! Thought I was in a world of hurt and did not want to go through all the other suggestions I found on RU-vid. I crossed the starter solenoid and bing! $20 bucks later I was on the road. Well done sir!
Finally, someone who gets right to the point and doesn't spend half the video with the camera on them or a lot of chatter that is not necessarily relevant to the matter at hand. Bravo Sir 👏
yes!!! I totally agree! I hit like on his video just for that. Mine clicks so the next thing someone told me I need to go and try to start it off the starter but I haven’t figured out how to do that yet
I have a 2001 f150, it’s been sitting for 4 years now, we plan on putting it back on the road due to the cost of vehicles, we pumped the tires up and hooked a batt charger onto it, after a few hours it cranked but wouldn’t start.. maybe a fuel issue? Idk.. if anyone could shed some light on it for me, I’d appreciate it. Thanks
I went to the extreme mechanics said it was my slave cylinder cause it was engaging like it should so I took out the transmission and changed it was a pain and bleed clutch it was good still wasn't fixed so I watched videos I turn key on and touched the 2 terminals and it started up but going to get new one and see if that's it . I did so much and be very bad if it was just that after taking out the transmission and if it works not even a mechanic knows how to fix something
I didn't have the same problem but shifting into neutral fixed my no start problem. The dash clicked a bit but then it started. After I let it warm up it started up after that just fine but it had been sitting without being ran for quite awhile.
Hi there, when I turn the key on my 2000 F150 it sometimes starts & sometimes does not start & makes no noise at all,no clicking are anything,I replace the solenoid(new) on the firewall & got the same symptoms!! Any other suggestions what it might be because I’ve been jumping it off with a screwdriver by the same solenoid I change.. Thanks in advance!!
Did you try starting it in Neutra when it does not start? I had a similar problem one time, and it was because when I put it in park, it wasn't all the way in park because of the nut in the shifter linkage was getting loose.
hey dean i got a question so did everything you said but when it came to jumping the solenoid at the firewall i still didnt get anything tried different screwdrivers metal to metal and got nothing at the solenoid. there is power 12 volts at the power side of the solenoid but the when i go direct like you did i didnt get anything no click no crank. i did get a click when i start the car from inside coming from the firewall solenoid but when jumpering the two together i get nothing, any idea what else i should look for. i also do i have power running to the starter itself
Watch your video thank you for helping me the same problem happened to me and I saw your video and I did the streeting you told me and they started right away thank you😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Back in the Day, we could take the started relay apart, clean the copper ring in side it, the contacts will make burn marks on the ring, reasemble it and it was good to go... for years :)
If you changed it and you can jump it with a screw driver maybe the new solonoid part is bad? It can happen, I just replaced a fuel pump and 3 days later it went bad.
Great camera work and talking points man I got an 03 f150 4.6 have all kinds of electric problems everything you talked about I’ve replaced just wanted to give you a 👍
just want to say thanks for the help i turned my key to the start position and when i touched the two together with the screw driver it started right up i went and got another one and it fixed my problem .im very thankful for the help and great video as well right on thank you so much
Before jumping across the load-carrying terminals on the relay you should try jumping the positive load terminal to the red/blue (?) wire that's attached to the solenoid with a right-angle connector. If that activates the starter then you know the problem is not the relay but instead the feed from the ignition switch. To be absolutely safe you should do this with a fused jumper because there might be a short to ground en route to the ignition switch.
It was the first thing you showed with the number one and two relays. Thank you so much man seriously. Possibly saved my job lol,or at the very least a reprimand.
A million thank you's!!!!! I watched your video and within 30 minutes of the problem occurring I fixed it. Thank You so much I cant imagine how much money you saved me. Your instructions were dead on accurate.
This just worked for me! I got out to get gas, got back in and wouldn't crank, AAA came out said battery was good but they didn't bring tow truck, I tried starting in neutral didn't crank, watched this video while waiting for tow truck and it worked. My bolts are very rusty and had a hard time making solid connection with screwdriver but finally did and started up like a champ! Much appreciated
@@deano9304 I bought a new solenoid and replaced it, but still no crank, I'm noticing my starter relay fuse(15a) popping every time I go to crank it. Any ideas what this could be now?
You said that you had no power to the radio. You also said that it worked with the 2nd key. My problem is that I went over to a neighbor and then tried to shut off the truck and it stayed running. Then I tried it back and forth and even hit the starter and nothing. So i stalled the truck ( I have a stick ) then tried to start it again, nothing. Then I disconnected the battery and tried it again, nothing. i have no radio power. Lights work, wipers work. Yet no dash stuff. My first though was lock cylinder is bad. I will double check this problem, I doubt that it is the problem.
I watched about 1:18 of this video and I realized, I was using the spare key which we probably never used before, after spending an hour trying to diagnose the problem I quickly grabbed the main key and it started right up thanks for the video man.
Dealing with this mess as I type. And just diagnosed mine with the same problem. Except my solnoid is on my starter under the passenger side. Thanks for video man
As I was on my way into work my 2001 f150 lost all power to the instrument cluster I had no power windows no lights nothing but the engine still ran. But then when I got to work the truck would not start now I just let it set and I go out and it fires right up again
Holy cow, now I understand why people say that you getting to the point instead of this and that. This is great, I was kind of panicked after my wife's truck stopped yesterday - one problem then another and another - thank you, sir. What you said is what I'm exactly going to do tonight.
Have the same issue with '97 F150. Lost sight of the possibility of a bad solenoid. I'm willing to bet right now before even assessing it that that is the problem. Thanks for the reminder & insight!!
Thank you for this video that was exactly my issue I went out at lunch time and came back to my truck with this exact problem tried a lot of things on F-150 forums but it wasn't that it was putting it into neutral and starting it and bang it worked.
Truck was running fine, I didn't get a warning other that when I tried a different key it did start, so I guess I got maybe 3 or for warnings from the bad selonoid, but it also got me confused because of using a different transponder key.
@@deano9304 today i was fixing my sloppy shifter on the column good running 2001 f150 tightened the shift linkage t30 bolts down and spun the little wheel to get my gear selector needle back on Park. Now no crank no start. I can connect or link the solenoid bolts and it will fire up. New starter solenoid same no crank no start.....
before this video it was the most helpful that trick did not work I’m getting one loud click someone said I could try to jump it off the solenoid that’s also on the starter there’s a solenoid on the starter and then there’s that extra solenoid there at the top if I can’t jumpstart it on the top like you did do you know what I should try to do next? Thank you for your video
My 2000 F150 won't start makes a thud sound i thought it was cause bad corrosion on battery cleaned that put new connectors on had battery tested replaced the solenoid still nothing will start every once in a while its a standard also what could my issue be i have looked everywhere not seeing my issue
Great video. it helped me figure out NOTHING was wrong!!! After I replaced the starter and EGV valve on my father in-laws 1998 truck I would not start. Been trying all sorts of stuff, checking relays, fuses, wires etc.. No voltage on startup at the Low Tension side of the starter relay, WTH? Why? After hours of head scratching, I noticed in the wiring diagram there's an anti-theft device on these - Huh... Used the key fob remote to lock and unlock the doors - Fired right up! Good grief LOL.
Yeah I have a F-150 2000 to go to pick up and it's done the same thing but on the solenoid on the firewall it sparked but when I want to start it it's like the starter but it won't work so what could that be and then when I did take it in and have a new starter put on the guy says the dungeons all gone and I don't know if I didn't I tested it someone on Fire won't it do a spark so I didn't know if that was good will the solenoid throw up the market you touch it
Instead of jumping the terminals, with a screwdriver, go to the auto parts store, or harbor freight, and buy a mechanics remoter starter switch. It's about ten dollars, has two alligator clamps to attach to the starter solenoid. You hold the handle, and push the button to operate it. It has a long cord, and is handy, especially, if the solenoid is on the starter, way down under the engine somewhere.
I have the same problem I jumped the relay switch And it started I replaced it the original part. And it still won't start so I wonder if it's the other relay on the starter motor
I put a different battery on my truck it was running and on I moved it and when I try turning on it on it wouldn’t even crank the dash and lights go on but it doesn’t turn
You are a beautiful man! It was my starter solenoid, I used the screwdriver just like you said and it started right up! Replaced that part and I am mobile again. Thank you!
Ok i know this is a little late if i have a bad starter will and i croos the silinoid will my truck still start the silinoid sparks but i get nothing cranking wise
Sounds like a bad starter...if you short out the solenoid and the starter don't crank and doesn't even bump over...good chance you have a bad starter...and all other items ...lights ...radio ..etc are working....take off starter ....get car battery and jumper cables and hook to starter...apply direct voltage to it... That way you k ow if it's bad or not..if it spins over and is somewhat quiet...its good...if no spin or it spins and is grinding and rough sounding...bad starter ...good luck!
THANK YOU! It was the solenoid. I had already replaced the battery and the starter myself, as well as the shift bushings, tightened the bracket behind the shifter, replaced the ignition switch, checked all the relays... And I replaced the starter (notoriously awful) in a gravel driveway in the snow! I was at my wits end! Screwdriver started it right up.
I'm glad you got it working. Sorry about the headache you had before figuring it out. That is what I was worried about when it happened to be but I got lucky I guess
