A different take on the easy mode debate, covering: challenge and choice, disabilities and difference, Sekiro and Dark Souls, and of course, games journalism.
And all that without a single use of the word “art”, no comparisons to other media(or food analogies), and not one clip of a game journalist failing at cuphead. So… even if you disagree with everything I say, at least you have to admit that I’m being original here.

As a "disabled gamer", I find this debate insulting. There are some games that just aren't for me and that's all there is to it. Besides, an easy mode wouldn't make the types of games that I can't play any more accessible to me. I can't play fighting games with big multi-button combos, and making the combos I can't do deal more damage won't help. Those games are fundamentally designed around actions that I can't do. I can handle the souls games because there's only a handful of buttons to manage, so getting through them is a matter of patience, while street fighter is completely out of my reach. At its core, if you can't perform the basics of a game an easy mode won't help you, and if you can, then you don't need an easy mode. People with disabilities aren't babies, don't treat them like them.

@@Mr_Skibz a) No, even in a from software game an easy mode would not make it more accessible, if you can't perform the basic actions of the game lowering enemy health won't make it more accessible b) One button combos in fighting games would make them more accessible, but that would completely shift the focus of the game from learning and executing the combos to matchups and footwork, mixups would just be erased from the game. Fighting games are just about something that some people are incapable of. It's no different from the fact that blind people can't enjoy those "spot the differences" pictures.

+hunted4blood but this arguement isn't about you, you're just an excuse that they're using to get what they want, you're just their slave pulling their arguement. ANd it's due to their respect for you that they treat you like you're nothing but an excuse, of course. If someone says this about disabled people, and they're not disabled, i just dismiss them. If I see a disabled person talking about this, cool, but you know what? I like this game called 7 days to die, and i've gone in and modded the game to be what I want it to be, rather then expecting the dev to do this. This maynot always be possible for the average user, but most games do have mods people build for them, and most modders accept requests, so it's not that hard to make a game what you want it to be.

@Sai Tama dk if what you said is supposed to oppose what hunted4blood said but just to make sure. Not everyone is disabled in the same way. Some people are dyslexic and have trouble understanding text or other fine details and other people have high functioning autism or tremors in their hands and body. The word "Disabled" covers a massive spectrum of hundreds of thousands of disabilities. Just because one person is disabled and can play street fighter doesn't mean every other disabled person can too.

@@1brushstudio You have that backwards. The majority of people only play very casual games. There is a reason why games have become increasingly casual over the years. When you appeal to the lowest common denominator, you get more sales, because for every hardcore fan that would have played 2000 hours you lose you gain 5 casual ones that will buy the game, play for 20-50 hours then lose interest. Yeah, when a grim and cruel world feels too much like a walk in the park with the enemies being mere annoyances like mosquitoes while in that park, it ruins the feel of it. Looking at dark souls, the early game enemies can put up a bit of a fight, though not that much, and coming back later, they seem to do almost nothing because of your stats and gear. I don't want that feeling to be the whole game, it would ruin the sense of accomplishment. I respect Midir in DS3 because of how much of a challenge he is for me. If flipping on an easy mode made me deal 3x the damage, my respect would fade quickly. I would also say that I've become a rather casual gamer over the years too because of everything I've got going on, but I love for a game to let me do my thing and learn from my mistakes. Instead of removing all mistakes entirely.
@lordcavalier9688

That’s the argument I always use. It’s the theme of the game, dark souls should be dark souls. Uncharted should not be dark souls. When the game is about a power fantasy, having crushing difficulty kills the narrative speed. As an aside I hate dark souls play style, the stamina meters and the forced style of combat, defensive. I don’t ant it in everything now. There is no more hack and slash games or gothic themed games. There is only dark souls.

However, if a game has an easy mode or if someone expresses that they'd like an easy mode(of course without demanding etc), it is elitism to lambaste it. The only thing that should stop From Software from adding an easy mode is whether it is worth the investment to implement it, Sekiro would be downright better with an optional mode that doesn't affect people who only want the true experience, but implementing it requires time that From shouldn't feel obliged to take, and so it doesn't need an easy mode, but it doesn't need to be restrictive either. In my opinion I think that adding an easy mode is not worth it simply because the market won't be expanded to much.

@@Hero_Puddle A lot of time and money, if you don't want the easy mode to be just insulting. As was mentioned a good easy mode would involve rebalancing the entire game, or the lazy route is changing a couple variables, which is what is most often done. People are demanding a thing that would cost the studio months of development and millions of dollars, which really does sound like entitlement. If they only express that they'd like an easy mode, that really would be fine, and From could debate whether the time and investment would be worthwhile to try to capture a larger audience, but what's been going around is demands and attempts to shame and cajole them for not having had an easy mode over a flimsy accessibility argument that doesn't seem to be about the people they claim it is.

@@SkyeRequiem001Well yeah, that first part is just elaborating on what I said, There is a large difference between a demand and a request however. Tbh once you read the tutorial popups you can beat the game fair and square. After you read tutorials it's all about mastering the mechanics and learning boss patterns and how exactly to react to them. Many people don't do that and then they complain that the game is too hard and doesn't play like dark souls, even though you are actually told how to play to begin with. Game teaches you to block and parry as early as first tutorial area. And it only teaches you to DODGE when you finish the tutorial and are presented with the mini-boss that has a special mechanic that can be avoided only by dodging (aka grapple). But then even Pewdiepie in his recent vid plays the game like DS (heavily dodging and never blocking or parrying) as well as skipping all the tutorials up to the point when he doesn't even read the popup that tells him to HOLD THE FREAKING LOOT BUTTON TO SUCC THE GOLD/ LOOT.

Exactly! I was surprised by amount of people that just skip most of tutorials, item descriptions and conversations and then they ask themselves what were they supposed to do. “Should every game be designed for every person?” If yes, then shouldn’t movies or shows be made for everyone? Not everyone can enjoy horror movies, so we have to get rid of them or make some less scary version, right? How bout horror tv shows like Black Mirror or AHS? Not everyone can like the shows or enjoy them the first time they see it, so that means we gotta make a shitty version that’s much worse, a version without all the stuff that makes those shows special, a version that everyone can enjoy, right? So if games should always be made for everyone, then shouldn’t shows and movie provide ONLY the experience best designed to appeal to everybody? With this logic, no movie or show can exist b/c there will ALWAYS be people who don’t like them, and there will always be people who don’t get the point of it. There’s no way to make something everyone can enjoy. People enjoy different things

Hmm, for that argument that lower difficulty modes can be a temptation, I think another option aside from just not having an easy mode is to make the difficulty lockable. If a player really wants a hardcore experience and they don't want to be tempted by the siren song of easy mode whenever they are struggling at a tough boss fight, have an option when you start the game that locks the difficulty setting. The people that want to can pick hard mode and lock the save so they can't switch it out, forcing them to stick to that experience through thick and thin, as if the game didn't have an easy mode at all.

Even though I hate the concept of an easy mode in Soulslike games, that system is good. It’s how the Etrian Odyssey games work. They have 4 difficulty options, but the hardest one literally says “This is exactly the same as option 3, except if you pick this one, you can’t change it”.

Yes but then people who get stuck will feel that they chose the wrong difficulty, be annoyed and quit, if there's only one difficulty setting you know that the issue wasn't your choice, it's just a matter of the game asking more of you and once you beat that stage you KNOW that you're better, stronger and more ready for the rest of the game. I think difficulty is important for the experience because of how god damn hard my first playthrough was, it took me nearly 70 hours and quitting completely twice but once I got it, I got it and 6 years later I'm still replaying every game in the series at least twice a year.

@Siren Drake It all boils down to a feeling of "If I can do it, so can you". If you wanna play a "hard" game in easy mode, then you go play "easy" games. I mean, I can look away at every jump scare in a movie or cover my face during buildups and still get to the end of a horror movie but did I really watch it? Did I get even half of the intended experience? And most people who want to control how you play your games really just wanna share the satisfaction of completing a challenge to those who think its impossible, to convert people to "hardcores", they just have no better ways of communicating this than imposing their view and a superficial account of their experience. In this age of idle clickers, candy crush and open-world sandbox galore, do you really blame them? Some people just don't understand that not everyone looks for the same things in gaming simply cause not everyone looks at video games in the same light. To some this is like watching netflix, to some this is a hobby, to some this is is an addiction but in the end we are all here to do the same thing at the end of the day and thats to play a good game no matter if it teaches us to surpass challenges or just lets us disconnect our minds. Theres something out there for everyone.

Depending on the game having an easy mode is a completely fine feature as long as it doesnt impact the developers vision. Plenty of games can have an easy mode but when you give a Rogue like or souls game for example an easy mode when it is specifically designed to have you die multiple times and give you a sense of accomplishment then it doesnt work. >Them:"just turn on hard mode for yourself and let us have fun" >Response : I am 99% sure majority would choose the easier difficulty in a fit of rage and then complain about the game being short or boring after wards
@CB66941
@CB66941 2 года назад
I think that response depends mostly on how well the game is designed as opposed just the difficulty alone What I have most against isn't difficulty, but half assed difficulty. Like on easy mode they set the damage to do 2 times more against enemies and 2 times less against you, or make healing items more or more ammo pickups That's a really lazy way to implement difficulty If your gameplay is tight, then most players will still have a fun time even on easy mode. Then to add to replayability they could always bump up the difficulty My favorite example of difficulty that caters to various skills is Sunlust, a megawad for Doom 2. It doesn't just add more enemies at higher difficulties, but replaces lower tier enemies with higher ones. It also adds or removes items. It doesn't take away from the Sunlust experience, because you're still needing to use the same tactics mostly as you would on higher difficulties Other games like Thief the Dark Project do difficulty different. It's difficulty is objective based, like on higher difficulties, you need to steal a higher amount of loot, or keep the bodycount to a minimum. Custom difficulties are also fun as hell, it lets you tweak a lot of parameters for your difficulty to cater to what you want to turn off or on. Sniper Elite and Dishonored 2 comes to mind. Some easy difficulties are truly bad. Ninja Gaiden 3 RE's easiest difficulty is just insulting, these ones are worth complaining about but I'd argue most good games, even with the half assed difficulties I mentioned, won't receive many complaints about it being boring or too short. For rogue like games, I think it's more on perspective. It takes time to sink in that feeling that yes you are making progress, even if you're dying, you're just making progress in a different way. It's less a matter of difficulty.

Giving players the easy way out sucks, even without implementing difficulty modes. I played Horizon Zero Dawn recently and I got the shield-weaver armour. It was insanely overpowered. I was taking out the hardest machines in the game without so much as breaking a sweat. Fights lost all their thrill and meaning as I breezed through the hardest quests in the game. I genuinely wish I had never picked up that armour because it definitely lessened my enjoyment, though I didn't think so while playing it. Why didn't I just drop the armour or not use it? Because it was the best armour in the game! Why would I drop it? I obviously wanted to have something that made me stronger back then, and I didn't see how it made the game's well designed combat feel boring, but now that I've finished the game I look back fondly at the difficult fights I had before getting the armour and I realised I enjoyed them a lot more. By taking the easy way out I basically ruined the experience for myself and I truly regret that. (I'm gonna start a new game + on ultra hard mode and drop the armour when the memory of the game fades a bit)

For the most part I'd agree with you, but I have to say, the difference is one takes away from other's experiences and the other takes away from the individual player's. Now while no game *needs* an easy mode, I don't think there's a reason to attack people who use one. Take the Forza series for example, I know that on the regular difficulty setting there are alot of children who would try the game, give up and not like racing games anymore just because they're too hard. Adding a difficulty slider would allow them to play the game at an easier difficulty and then actually learn to play and enjoy a racing game like that. And would help introduce younger people into "proper" video gaming. Honestly, if it's a single player game, does it really make a difference if other people can make it easier for themselves?

The biggest and most common argument for why all games should have difficulty options is "It doesnt affect you, and you can choose not to use easy mode". For me, and many others, this is simply false. Having the option to reduce the difficulty, to get past a challenge im frustrated with WILL in fact take away from my experience. I will be tempted to turn the difficulty down, and if i do, i will feel defeated, and feel like i didnt actually overcome the challenge. With a game like dark souls, or sekiro, the purpose of the game for me is overcoming the challenges it throws at me. One could argue that thats my problem, and my lack of self control shouldnt reduce options for other people. I think whether that is true or not doesnt matter at all. There are game developers, like Fromsoftware that want to make a game without an easy mode, because it goes against their vision for the game experience. I want to play a game that doesnt give me the option of an easy mode, because i want that experience. I view games as art, and i dont think the vision of the artist should be compromised to appeal to more people, even if it ends up excluding a bunch of people, including me. There are lots of games i dont enjoy, that others do, and im fine with that. If the devs want to add an easy mode, they should. If the devs do not want to add an easy mode, they should not. I want there to be games like dark souls that doesnt give me the option of an easy way out. If you dont want to play a punishingly difficult game, dont buy one.

@@oliviawilliams6204 It really depends on the game. Watching someone else play a video game is more of a social act. Or, watching someone else play said video game might give you ideas for how you'll go about a particular obstacle. Maybe even watching someone else play the game can give you some kind of teaching experience. Minecraft for example, you could watch a friend or youtuber play Minecraft, and then engage with them giving them ideas for a particular project. Or you could just play with your friends, initiate, plan, and make different projects together. You could inspire someone else, or someone else could inspire you. Years ago I watched the youtuber Thinknoodles, and enjoyed his Minecraft let's play because it inspired me to have a few different projects. I haven't came across many video game videos that do this, but there's been a few times where I was watching a video of someone playing a game and they had solved something a particular way which inspired me to do likewise. It wasn't like a tutorial or anything, just inspiration. And because of the social aspect, watching someone play the game, you can see it and hear it from someone else's perspective. They could just be ranting about something, but as you soak it in and criticize what needs to be criticize, you could learn more about something you hadn't before, and if it's a livestream and they're willing to listen to you, they could learn a lesson as well through interacting with you. Not that all games are viable to watch someone else play. I've tried to watch other people play chrono trigger and other such games before. It is, indeed, very boring. You're not engaging with the game, and you're usually not engaging with the player either. Although, if you have a hatred for games with high difficulty but enjoy great story writing, watching others is a viable "easy mode" as many people in the past have done so. Some people who realized a game they thought was difficult years ago might actually be good, would go back, play it, and have fun. Like the guy in the video said, not all games are for everyone. I don't game for the challenge, I game for story and to enter a new world. Some of my favourite games are walk em ups like fire watch and puzzle games like portal and superliminal. So I do often put games on easy so combat isn't difficult I can just enjoy the world. However that does backfire sometimes because in bioshock infinite I played on easy and I felt like I had cheated the world. Finally a reasonable comment. I'm playing DS for the atmosphere and story and I think it has just the right difficulty - BUT I can imagine how frustrated and even sad someone who really loves a game's content, but struggles with its difficulty could get, if he just can't succeed however hard he tries. And nothing speaks against a well integrated easy mode that locks the player from loot or specific additional content, if used, because it incentivises regular difficulty, while still enabling worse players to progress and appreciate the game. But of course "gamers" don't get this.

"...lured by the siren song of a lower difficulties and destroy their own experience" The same thing can happen with harder difficulties. I always play everything on the hardest difficulty and some games are clearly not actually designed to be "fun" on the hardest difficulty. Games that just create ridiculous bullet/damage sponges to compensate for difficulty since they can't (or won't) actually make smarter enemies or scenarios. After Demon Souls I haven't struggled in any of the Souls games or Sekiro (which at least has the demon bell and the charm). Maybe just tedious at times since sometimes there's no way to know that an unavoidable instant kill is about to occur unless you already know what it looked like and that it was even possible (especially if it comes from behind). I guess I am supposed to feel like I am ignoring the designers intentions by being... better than their testers? What if instead the games' difficulty was designed to create a "sense of accomplishment" for some of the best players in the Souls community instead of the average gamer. I don't understand how people can be so hurt over just seeing an easy mode option exist... Was I supposed to feel offended that anything below Nightmare existed in Doom Eternal? I didn't realize so many people cared so deeply about how "I" experience the games that I play in single player. Not sure why I should feel like some piece of art was destroyed because someone else decided to play Sekiro with an unlimited life mod because until I replayed it with both the charm and the bell and no prosthetics I might as well have been playing with unlimited life anyway.

The point is that difficulty options in general can hurt a game's intended experience. and I seriously doubt that no souls game was ever difficult for you just because you played demon's souls first. It'd make sense if you said like, you played through all of demon's souls, dark souls 1 and 2, so dark souls 3 was no big deal. Difficulty settings in games do hurt the experience for me, and for many others, in several ways. Skyrim is a great example of bad implementation of difficulty. If you have trouble on a certain section, instead of finding a more effective solution, you can savescum, you can turn the difficulty to the minimum, or you can just grind levels for hours until the whole game becomes a cakewalk. Using your example of DOOM, I love the new ones, but I always felt like I had no idea what the intended experience was supposed to be. I knew it wasn't supposed to be easy, but how much am I meant to be challenged by it? I have no clue. Another example of difficulty settings hurting an experience is The Witcher 3. Over half the game's mechanics can be ignored on lower difficulty settings, making the game feel like you just spam attack to win. You've no need for alchemy, smithing, bombs, crafting, upgrading, even utilizing healing items, which are all part of the intended experience of feeling like a monster hunter, brewing potions and bombs and mutagens to prepare to fulfill your contract. Easier modes just have you go to the monster and spam the attack button. Don't have to cast spells or use blade oils or buff potions. some people like a challenge. As he said, it's not a tragedy that some games have difficulty settings. Some people like that. And that's fine. But not every game should be tailored to what one demographic wants. Multiple types of games exist because there are multiple demographics to please. I happen to like playing a game as it is, experiencing the world as it's meant to be. Regardless of if that makes it hard or easy. Some of my favorite games of all time are Hollow Knight and Kirby's Epic Yarn. The former because it gave me a beautiful yet brutal world to explore and eventually conquer, and the latter because it's a simple, relaxing jaunt through a fun world with a goofy art style and pretty music. Whether games are hard or not isn't the issue. It's the settings that can make a game unnecessarily hard, or unnecessarily easy.

@@Loafusbreadmyre when i read people complaining about a game having an easier option i just dont get it. How in the world could SOMEONE ELSEs decision to play something in the easiest mode possible somehow affect YOUR ability and option to play it on the hardest mode possible. There is still not one good reason why a game should not have an easier difficulty. Because remember: I am me and you are you. Whatever you do, DOES NOT change what i experience and want experience. Terry Pratchett (the author of the "Discworld"-novels) liked playing "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion", but due to his Alzheimers he had trouble finding his way back out of the dungeons - a modder created an companion that could lead the player character out of the dungeons, thus making the game more accessible for Pratchett. So... what's the take away? It's a good thing when games are accessible to players who enjoy playing them - but what makes a game not accessible may vary greatly from player to player. Making a game less difficult may not even increase accessibility, but it may lessen the experience players have while playing.

Like in the video you feel like you did something and feel very happy, Sekiro is hard and that’s fine why? cause you feel very good when you beat a boss, I beat owl and guardian ape after a while and it felt so good, where I would do one of these too, 1) use cheats and change to easy mode or 2) just give up. Right on, the issue of accessibility to video games isn't their scaling degree of difficulty, it's how their inputs are created. Most games use controllers designed specifically for able bodied people and build their input methods entirely off of how those controllers are used. Making a boss's attacks hurt less isn't going to make it more fun for someone who has trouble using a standard gaming controller in the first place. Many gamers with disabilities overcome these difficulties and may even rank in the top tier of players, but they shouldn't have to put in ten times the work that able bodied players do to get there. It's like thinking that decreasing the incline of a stair case alone will help someone in a wheel chair - they don't need less steep stairs, they need ramps.

There are good points made for Dark Souls specificly, but the video is lacking in seeing the greater picture, as in these games are not designed directly to tell a story they are about atmosphere, thrill of the fight and challenge. Games that have an amazing story to tell, implement easy difficulty to attract wider audience. For example i could spend 10 min fighting a mob of enemys in God of War or i can spend 5 min it all depends if i like the fighting part or the story part more of the game. So this Videoname should have been "no Darksouls-ish game needs an easy mode" and i would agree with this video. That aside while Sekiro is darksouls-ish it has better story, which attracted audiences that will buy the game for the story, but will not stay for the challenge and its exactly those people that are complaining right now. They hyjacked the disabled gamer point to get more attention. Its basically the Developers job to decide if they want their game to be seen by more people, but have people spend less time with their game or the opposite. They also have to consider that the longer people on average spend time with their game the bigger the community around the game will grow.

It's fine if you don't think an easy mode wont solve this issue, but DON'T pretend that saying you want more people to be able to play difficult games is the same as saying that a movie has to please everyone

@@theiggliestbuff9925 It is. Just like there are movies that aren't and shouldn't be accessible to children, there are games like that. The motor skills to play a game, can be a part of experiencing that game, just like having knowledge of certain philosophies, or historical events can be part of experiencing a movie. It's like with people who say modern art shouldn't be respected if you need to have extensive knowledge about art to understand it. Most art or movie or music critics understand that not all examples of the media they judge are for everyone. All of this talk about making content for minorities of this or that type, and yet it's supposed to be wrong, for some games to be made for a minority of gamers? If a game can be too hard for a person with disabilities to play, the need is not for the game to sacrifice it's integrity, but for a controller that would allow the person to play despite their disability. The conversation very much is, about making it so everyone can be pleased by games. It's a decade old discussion about how some people can't enjoy tough games. Now unrelated (and worth talking about) issue has been brought to the table, to support their claims. But again, it's not an issue of adding an easy mode to games that would suffer from it, but creating tools and different means by which different people could experience the game the way it is meant to be experienced. Adding an easy mode to any of the souls-likes (keeping to the Fromsoft titles), would be much like adding long pauses to a movie where someone provides exposition to you. (to expand on that one. There are showings of movies etc, where someone will explain them to you, with context and all that... there are also playthroughs of games. But those are additional things, and not the way you are meant to experience them) Where the conversation is about games having to please everyone, you picked out the new argument that talks about something entirely else.

Huh, you know, I was actually in the belief that yeah, games should have an easy mode for people who are interested, but maybe not that good at video games (although I think a "skip button" is just ridiculous, especially if bosses and levels are the point of the game) but I think you've convinced me actually. You make a very good point, that some games are made with certain people in mind, and not every game can appeal to everyone. I personally, was never interested in dark souls, and I don't think I ever will be interested, just because it's not a game for me. Breath of the wild on the other hand, is a game for me, and I knew from the beginning, that it was going to be hard, and it was, but now I can fight silver lynels and feel like a pro because I've earned it. I made it through all the hard parts, and I feel fairly accomplished in that. And if the game wasn't hard at first, that sense of accomplishment wouldn't be there. So yeah, I see your point. You've convinced me.

Breath of the Wild is hard? Alrighty then. Could've used a hard mode. As to my take, an easy mode is good for games I'm not sure I'll find interest in. I got The Witcher 3 free with my GPU, and I was 100% expecting to most likely hate it (Based on previous RPG games), so I started it on easy just to get a sense for the story. Turns out I like The Witcher 3, and if the only option was basically Death March, no way in hell would I have played it, despite probably still being interested in the story. Does every game _need_ an easy mode? No, but I can also argue that a lot of games that only have one difficulty are also worse off. A big one for me was Metal Gear Solid 5. I would've loved a harder difficulty with more aware AI that might actually cause damage, instead of me being able to take out an entire village with reinforcements and a few Hind Ds with a M4. Or be able to use my binoculars without auto tagging enemies that never goes away and gives me the ability to see through walls. Or be able to mess around and die a few times without the game ostracizing me and trying to put a stupid chicken hat on me. Best I have is some PC mods. I will also 100% disagree that the argument of difficulty options fragments the community. I don't think anyone's even given a shit that most people don't play Halo on legendary, but they'll still talk about how cool the game is and how much they like the world and it's characters.

If you're good enough at games to take on Silver Lynels, you're more than ready to give Dark Souls a try. Just in case you think it isn't for you solely due to difficulty. Do note that Dark Souls is different from BoTW, though - there's a huge difficulty spike right when you start playing, but after that it doesn't actually get much harder. Personally, I highly recommend it. The story is my favorite of any fictional work.

Definitely but I remember playing Devil May Cry when I was like 13? Maybe younger? I turned 29 like two days ago so I’m not sure how old I was when Devil come out but I digress. From what I remember it didn’t have an easy mode until you kept dying over and over. Now as a young squire this happened to me during the Nightmare boss battle. As a result I took that option and over time I played the game over and over, each time moving up a difficulty. Same goes with like Hitman and stuff. I’ll play it normal then move on the Professional for example. Also as a dad with a 11 year old kid and 31 year old girlfriend and a full time job (Not to mention friends and pubs, gym, football matches, hangovers, come down that come with it) I simply don’t have the luxury of time and I imagine that’s the case for most adults. I only get to play games now if I’m off work during the school holidays or my daughters playing outside or she’s on her own console upstairs and my girlfriends still in work. I also go back to working your way up. I play games with my daughter but obviously I’ve got about 25 years experience she’s got like 6 so we’re at very different levels so it would be good to ease her into the game’s that are somewhat harder that I play. It’s like when I did my training for the parachute regiment for the British army. They don’t just start by throwing you out of aeroplanes day one. You do work your way up through P Company then it gets harder and harder with more people dropping out until you’re not a Joe anymore and you earn your beret then you move on to jump school for your wings. My point is I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing if you’re A. Not a lonely child rapist or B. A kid or C. Want to make the game last a bit longer by working your way up (think of it like training). I see the points of not having them in every game and I certainly agree. I see no reason for like likes of dark souls or bloodborne to have and I see no reason for every game to have them but I certainly see a case for it and that’s enough. It doesn’t make a difference to me. If I find a mode not challenging then I’ll move on up. It’s literally that simple but people may want training. Plus it’s bollocks because it’s the Internet age so most people can easily get guides up anyway. It’s not like back in the day when you had to spend a weekend trying to figure something out. In terms of accomplishment I’d just make it so you don’t get any achievements or rewards for the lower difficulty. So that’s my conclusion. I see no harm in them, they don’t make a difference to me because I probably wouldn’t use it unless I was short on time so the existence of such wouldn’t bother me. Like gay people. I’m not going to start letting people slam lengths up my arse so it doesn’t make a difference to my life if people want that for themselves, I’ll stick to licking my bird out.

Disabled people are actually better people than they are, because they often push themselves harder to compensate for their disabilities, and as a result have far stronger mentalities. @@VoraciousHeart Good question. I will say, I enjoy a challenge, because you have to work to get results. And when I first played Sekiro, I could die often to basic mobs if I didn't use stealth. But there comes a point where you figure the mechanics out, and realise, that the game is intentionally designed to punish bad and passive play. When a boss can 2 shot you, the natural tactic is to play hit and run, but that just doesn't work, because they deal posture damage to you, and can stun and hurt you badly. But when you play aggressively, you can stop them from attacking you, and damage their posture instead. So basically, playing aggressively and not letting them dictate the fight, is actually the best defense. Now, if the game was made easier, it would cripple that dynamic, because you could just button mash the attack button, and win every fight, without ever having to master the mechanics. I love that I can play Sekiro with a hangover, and I play badly (as in, my reaction time is slower, I get over-exited and button mash etc), and the game punishes me for it. But I also love, that when I am in 'the zone', I can concentrate and play well, and actually get results. I am not saying the game is perfect (the camera is horrible on occasion), but the combat is something I have been wanting to see implemented in a game since the 90s. And finally, someone has made a game where it actually feels like you are having a real fight, rather than just spamming attack and winning every fight without consequence.

This debate is pretty retarded because easy mode isn't an objective quantifier. How easy is the easy mode? How certain playstyles, items and optimizations that make the game a lot easier? How about powerfarming? Easy mode in essence makes it so that you either receive less damage and/or you deal more damage to enemies. Somtimes it can change enemy behaviour but that's pretty rare in this diseased industry nowadays, developers just tune the stats. So in essence the Soulsborne games had an easy mode; using shields, powerfarming, copying the most optimal build from Reddit and so on. Admittedly BB removed shields so that's the first Soulsborne game where you're forced to have good reactions but even then, optimized builds and guides along with a bit of farming makes the game significantly easier. Sekiro shaked up the community because in general that's the first Fromsoft game without an easy mode. You need good reflexes. You need to learn the patterns. You cannot make a Havel-poise build or a RobFlynnStone build and kill every boss on the first try anymore. I couldn't give a shit about difficulty for the Soulsborne games, I always researched the most opmitized, efficient way to play the game and followed it to the letter. Aside from a couple of areas and bosses (cutting off tails in DS1, Horsefuck Valley in DS2, Orphan of Kos in BB) I didn't have that big of a problem. All in all, beating those games was definitely easier than the first general in Sekiro. This is the first Fromsoft game where difficulty is given, you don't have to actively nerf yourself or shy away from efficient builds, you can't level up your character, you need to level your own skills. So the whole debate is something new, because most games really do have difficulty options, they just hide them. Just because you can't select an easy mode in the menu doesn't mean you don't actually have ways to make the game significantly easier.

@@agostonbazmajer1100 If you know about powerfarming, playstyles, and build optimizations then you understand the kinds of things requires to be playing hard games like the SoulsBourneIro series. A lot of people do not and never will be willing to do those things in games. I am much more confident revisiting any boss in Sekiro than I am revisiting bosses in DarkSouls. In Sekiro you can be equal with anyone in combat. DS makes you feel weak, Sekiro gives you the tools to be an equal. Difficulty is subjective but FS has said they make games that grant a sense of accomplishment not for difficulty. I feel accomplishment so they did their jobs.

@agostonbazmajer1100 5 лет назад
@@wisdumb47 'you understand the kinds of things requires to be playing hard games like the SoulsBourneIro series' We need to make a distinction here then. To keep it simple, things can be difficult at a mental level or a mechanical level. Beating the best chess player in your county or region is a very difficult task, but if Magnus Carlsen tells you every move on a hidden headset, then literally anyone can do it. Mental difficulty can be completely removed if you follow guides or people actively tell you what to do. And a huge part of difficulty in Soulsborne comes from this. Sekiro is different, you don't really need or even can optimize builds, sure you may find tricks, locations, routes and items that help a little but in the end, 95% of Sekiro's difficulty is mechanical. If you don't have the reflexes and skills to beat the boss, you can follow any guide or reddit post, you simply won't beat it until you improve. In the previous Soulsborne games this wasn't the case, if you had read every guide you could be a bad player but still beat the vast majority of bosses without much problems simply because mechanical difficulty could be mitigated with research. This is the difference and that's why a lot of people have extreme difficulty with Sekiro.

DS3 did have an easy mode though. It was summoning people into your game to help you win. Otherwise, you could invade other people's worlds and watch them play through a level and watch the traps and tricks that were there and get a layout of the level for yourself. I think a better answer is dynamic difficulty adaptivity. In the case of From Software games where the style of their worlds is inherently harsh and brutal, perhaps not. But for other games where their whole premise isn’t centered on ‘difficulty’, helping struggling players out with some health pack drops after dying in a boss fight 5+ times, for example, might be the most appealing answer. If developers can assist players in experiencing their whole game without making those players feel like they’re babysat the whole time, especially when there’s just so many games to play these days, I think that stands out as masterful design in terms of difficulty.

@@SonGoku5363 That's because one of Dark Souls' merits was the high difficulty. If you know you'd enjoy it less on Easy mode, then why pick it? I _always_ pick normal mode (apart from when I was a child, which is who easy mode is really meant for)

Difficulty is a part of a gamemaker’s toolkit. You can use it to set the tone, to embody themes, to create or even require community, so many things. Saying ALL games should have easy mode is like saying all paintings should be blue. It’s silly, and sometimes the painting they want to make is red.

One big bugbear for me is games that ask you if you want to play easy mode when a boss defeats u a certain number of times. I’ve accidentally put it on easy because of this. Drives me nuts

"I think every film should have a kid friendly mode to make the film more accessible to a wider audience, why shouldn't my six year old be able to watch the latest horror flicks on the market? Artistic vision should never trump accessibility". See, see how stupid that sounds when applied to another artistic medium...

Sometimes you can learn something about oranges from apples. The two mediums are similar and the logic of the argument can be applied to movies.
@AirNeat

It's like saying every explicit song should have a clean version ...oh wait! Games are interactive, movies are not. Movies are an entirely visual medium, whereas often the easy mode in a game doesn't effect the themes at all, and only changes, well... the difficulty. Obviously the purpose of a horror movie is to be scary, so having a softer version would violate the movie's purpose. However, an easy mode doesn't violate the game's purpose unless the purpose of the game is to be difficult (as in Dark Souls).

I believe asking developers for an easy mode isn't wrong. It is just that: asking. They are free to say no. I haven't heard anyone asking to mandate that the industry offer an easy mode. As someone who is colorblind, I was happy to see that Red Dead 2 offer many colorblind options even for the rarest forms of colorblindness. Basically, asking developers for these easy modes is not a problem. They are free to say no. All the arguments against it seem to be under the pretense that gamers would somehow force them to do so. That is not correct.

@BigPuddin
@BigPuddin 3 года назад
The problem with this mentality has already been addressed. Adding an easy mode would ruin the essence of the game in itself as it's offering an easy way out of the challenges you're supposed to overcome. The temptation to lower the difficulty will always be there for someone seeking a challenge and is attempting to improve. Rather than getting better, they can simply cheat. This shouldn't be an option wherein the whole point of the game's difficulty is to force you to improve or die. This is like thinking there needs to be a hardcore, brutally violent, edgy mode for Animal Crossing to cater to people like myself who get bored of games with minimal challenge. That game is simply not for me. It's a laid back, calming experience, and I'm not the target demographic. I have no right to alter the artistic vision of this game simply because it's not suited to my abilities and/or tastes. Accessibility is not the point of the challenge. It's antithetical to it. Why does everyone want an option to make a game more accessible to them when the game isn't catering to them in the first place?
@GOAToatoat
@GOAToatoat 3 года назад
@@BigPuddin I mean, as someone who plays only Minecraft on hard-core, I am fully behind some hard-core animal crossing. I mean, if you would constantly be tempted to turn down the difficulty, that is a you problem. And Dark Souls already has an easy mode: offline. Iunno, I think this debate is pretty dead now. I just dont understand why it is such a big deal. We gamers constantly like to complain how we spend more money for less content these days. Now gamers seem to be defending another thing taken from us which used to be industry standard. I'll just reiterate what I said a year ago: I don't see a problem with easy modes. If someone wants to play a game on easy, that is their deal, not mine. If FromSoft never adds a legit easy mode, I don't care. I just find it weird that so many people seem to get so butt hurt by the idea of one existing. Like where is this "it is about the struggle" argument for games that have an easy mode? Shouldn't you start boycotting games like Doom, Minecraft, Dragon Age, etc.?
@SomeGuy-so3kk
@SomeGuy-so3kk 3 года назад
@@GOAToatoat An easy mode would compromise the vision of the fromsoft games and it is that vision that drew so many to love these games. To change said vision would be to change a part of why people liked the games in the first place and thus it makes complete sense that fromsoft game fans would not like this. "Shouldn't you start boycotting games like Doom, Minecraft, Dragon Age, etc.?" This is completely irrelevant. These games never established themselves as not having easy modes and have never made it a part of their creative visions. No vision is being asked to be compromised and no expectations are being asked to be betrayed. People are not asking that all games not have easy modes just that fromsoft be allowed to keep their games the way they are in peace.

Yes, I enjoyed the characters and story in those games, but once I started really getting into bloodborne and playing the souls games, I learned what true stress relief is. There's no shortage of games that are trivially easy, it's certainly the majority of games nowadays. People who want easy mode have plenty of choice already, no need to get bent out of shape for the occasional "hard" game, which honestly are no harder than many classic 8 bit games. I don't remember people complaining about not having Easy modes in everything back in the 90s.

these easy mode people just like bullying game developers cause it makes them feel better, it actually has nothing to do with easy mode. the game industry has adapted with mobile games, which are the most accessible type of game out there.
