Listening to this reminds me a lot of the development of a little thing called Dungeons and Dragons. Which started off as a modified ruleset of a nopleonic wargame systen so it could take place in a medieval fantasy world. And someone got bored of just playing that one day, and set up a scenario for his friends where they were heroes in a siege with their own personal objectives. Then he added in improvisation on a whim because one character in the game was OP, so he had a monk pull out a blaster and shoot him. Gary Gygax, the man who largely made D&D what it is, was a player in one of these hero centered wargame things, and decided to make rules for the game because up until then it was completely improvised, and would playtest it with his children. Not only did this lead to Dungeons and Dragons, a game ive been playing for more than half my life, but every other tabletop RPG, and arguably the entire RPG genre in video games. (The creators of fallout credited a lot of their inspiration to tabletop RPGs they played, and unless im mistaken, The Polish Localization of Balder's Gate is what earned CD Projekt the money to make the Witcher 1, just to name a few examples). Its really amazing when you think about it, how one person deciding they want to play a favorite game in a different way can shape an entire industry like this

What you've forgotten to mention here is that for every successful mod which spawned a wave of new games modeled after it, there are a thousand more that failed miserably, and therein lies the real problems with Game developers trying new things - nobody wants to take the risk. If a dev wanted to take the risk then their manager wouldn't, if a manager wanted to take the risk then the company wouldn't, if the company wanted to take the risk then you can bet the shareholders wouldn't dare to do anything that might impact their profits. Why take the risk of creating a brand new idea when taking an existing idea and improving it would be so easy and basically gauranteed profit? There's a reason why hardly anyone plays Team fortress classic, Dota on WC3 or CS 1.6 anymore. The big game devs took that idea, polished and improved it and stole all their playerbase because of course a big game company with lots of funding and full time professional developers can outdo a group or even a single modder. And that is probably key to where the next innovative MP game idea is going to come from, the place the AAA industry can steal their next idea. Maybe five years ago I could have answered you with either Roblox or maybe Minecraft but the former has devolved into a minature version of the games industry while competitive multiplayer modding in the later has somewhat stagnated and whilst minecraft still has some potential neither game seems to be an ideal breeding ground for new ideas given how the majority of the playerbase tends to stick to one gamemode or mod in particular (see DarkRP). If anything I believe we should be looking at the indie games industry for the next major idea as game development gets easier. Even if indie devs don't innovate as much as modders do, many indie games DO support modding and can develop modding communities themselves.

He literally mentionned this reason, mister I-wanna-sound-smartass... I won't take the time needed to pinpoint the exact moment he said it on the video, because I really don't have time to give to pretentious people who want to sounds interesting or more knowledged than the video creator by adressing a point the creator mention themselves (all while pretending they didn't...)

There is so much history of gaming. My first experience with a computer game was "Lunar Lander." Basically, there was a number, which was the the height of the lander above the moon's surface, and another number which was the thrust affecting the speed of the lander's descent or ascent, which you could control, trying to land without crashing. Getting it exactly right was, shall I say, not easy. From that to here today. So much history.

@@SimonWoodburyForget To add to that we have seen truly free games (no revenue whatsoever for the devs) on offer, but they are a minority by far. And they are a really "focus" experience that doesnt provide modders with much things to work with. They also have really long dev time, which let interests in them die and with it: the modding scene.
@pedrobeard7816
@pedrobeard7816 5 лет назад
while loss of interest might be a factor for the decline in innovations and quality of a game especially for a project that spans years in development I believe it's not the only reason for instance games that tries to capture as much players as possible for revenue purposes will surely lead to watering down of some features however indie games and mods don't have that restraint in fact they mostly thrive when made for a specific and often niche audience for instance games such as Celeste and Shovel Knight might not sell as much as a triple A title but it doesn't have to. Similar to modding in particular for example mods such as Inigo and Fallout Sim Settlements projects that are just the author believed could improve the experience or even add an experience to a game itself or even like the mod projects that adds features so ludacrous it might as well be an official content or better a game of its own. Like the the mod Forgotten City in Skyrim

It's funny I've been thinking about this and discussing it with friends a lot recently. I was even about to write a post for r/truegaming or somewhere with a lot of these ideas (not that I could recreate your thoughtful research and delivery!). I think your guess for the lack of innovation from industry (AAA studios being risk averse) is on point, but I'd throw out that this is so much the case that I'd say its unlikely that even the genres that aren't that divergent (battle royales; class-based, objective-focused shooters) are very unlikely to come to the industry. Now that the industry has grown enough to have attracted serious investors, it's no longer about making games that are profitable. It's about making THE game that is THE MOST profitable. And the surest way to do that is to just take game ideas that have been shown to work ("survival", "RPG elements", "open world", etc.) and mix them together in different configurations. I think the most obvious example is the Ubisoft IPs that used to have something original and have increasingly bled into each other to form a single game: the looter-shooter, gear-score based game with an open world revealed by climbing towers, dotted with repeatable activities to grind out money and experience (of course you can skip on all that if you buy into the premium currency and XP boosts!). The irony of it all is that the bland mishmash of genres the AAA studio makes can only continue with regular injections of new innovations from indie games and mods. That's not to say they add nothing, obviously they polish the innovations and iterate on them (eventually to death). I just find it sad that these days the gaming industry has to outsource passion.
@the11382
@the11382 3 года назад
I would say that AAA companies want innovation on their terms. Which means slower innovation(Innovation costs money and may reduce profit for other IPs), marketable(some games are just more fun to play than to watch), monetizable(MOBAs are not as easily monetizable as say, RPGs) and researchable(such that companies can market research the genre).

A couple of less important, but interesting games that have their roots in mods: Mordhau is a spiritual successor to Age of Chivalry, a mod for Half-Life 2. Rising Storm 2 has it's lineage in the Red Orchestra mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 (although this one is slightly different since it's still Tripwire at the helm, but I'd argue that Red Orchestra also helped inspire Hell Let Loose and Post Scriptum.)

One add to why I think modders are able to create successful game modes is that they are not influenced by what several co-workers and bosses think. They just go for it without their vision warped by other sources. I Can't help but think of when I was a kid and merged different outdoor games with others, introduces new mechanics, rules and stakes. E.g. taking hide and seek, merging it with capture the flag and introducing treasure hunt mechanics; Making my made-up game the favoured one between friends. Just something I found fun, without the influence of others, resulted in other people liking it too.

This video really got me thinkning, when you mentioned that Auto Chess couldn't really be easily compared to something existing, my brain immediately went: "But it's just PvP Legion TD, or Blood Tournament", both of which are fairly successful Warcraft 3 custom maps. I had always assumed that those were the primary inspiration for Auto Chess since they were so similar, but hearing mention of Mahjong as the basis got me to think, is this a case of convergent evolution? It would be really interesting to me if, with a timegap of some 10-15 years, two developers accidentally came up the the "same" idea but without knowing about eachother first. But then again, Auto Chess might be very similar to Legion TD, but it's also generally adjacent to the whole Tug of War genre, which is big enough to have its own tab in the official Starcraft II mod browser. Castle Fight, Desert Strike, you name it. There's tons of these really similar games that have went unnoticed by the larger public for decades, yet after playing Auto Chess, I still can't tell you what sets it apart from the rest, what makes it rise above to such great success. I think it's interesting to observe these kinds of things, and I'm always excited to see which new subgenre is going to spawn from a mod that hits the zeitgeist just right.

AAA dev did basically invent Battle Royale via Konami and Kojima Productions back in 2008. Of note, I LOVE ARAM. As someone who grinds ranked, after a bad game and a hard loss or as a warmup it is amazing to have a mode were you know it doesn't matter as much and it is quick fun. If something goes wrong, you aren't stuck in that game for 30 min to an hour, and the mode means that it rapidly swings back and forth for both teams. While I would never JUST play aram, as I love the extended depth and skill expression more commonly found in the rift game mode, it complements the experience.

Mods allow anyone to inivate on a base with assets already set up for them, taking away all the extra time that would need to be spent working on assets for a game, it gives them a set of game mechanics already implemented and allows them to experiment with different ideas based off of them, what happens if I speed everyone up by 300% etc, when most big studios are focused on making a game they think would sell they aren't so focused on just fucking about with what they have and what might be possible, they already tend to have a goal in mind for what they want and have to build, when mods allow people to take the built stuff and add, remove and mess around with what could be possible. Instead of leaving the game design to 10 - 20 people you allow millions the ability to do there own game design, and only one of them needs to make something different and slightly new to revitalise that game or create something people love

Very good video! But I think you missed the biggest point for the success of these multiplayer mods. For every PUBG or Dota there are 1000 other maps/game mods ideas etc. that don't make it. That are simply not good enough or interesting enough. Even if the idea for the game mode is good there is terribly much stacked against it. You're suck inside another game, struggling to be seen by people, the technical implementation is probably poor, you're not paid for your work and so on... So even the good ideas don't make it, only the outstanding ideas do make it and manage to find recognition. Their concept is so good, that it alone is powerful enough to overcome all the difficulties. If the concept is then picked up by a company and made by professionals you got the next LOL, Counter Strike or Fortnight.

An exploration of Steam will show that there are often thousands of mass-popular rated mods on games that accept modding on them; For example Skyrim, while old, has at least 3,000 mods with over 1k favourites. There are 28k mods on Skyrim, on Steam alone. I believe the video was about what makes just one of those (for example) stand out and get noticed outside the mod- or game- immediate community. I reference Skyrim for ease but the same applies to any Moddable game, and on Steam the statistics can be reasearched via the Steam Workshop.

Fun fact - ARAM was not a new mode to LoL. It is a combination of the DOTA (mod) map modes -ar (all random) and -am (all mid), which could be applied separately, the usual one was -ap (all pick), also -sd (single draft), -cd (captains draft), -wtf (no mana cost and spell cooldowns , aka URF in LoL). In the older versions of DOTA (mod) there was also -fun (fun tavern), which added extra characters, very stupid and broken characters. There are probably other ones, I don't remember.

As you say them they become obvious, but were not obvious (at least to me) before you said them. You are an important voice that needs a greater audience. You need to be heard. Please don’t burn out.

Dude, love your videos. The mindset of a true scientist and researcher applied to videogames. That said, I've got a request: could you please make a retrospective/critique Europa Universalis? It would be really great. Thank you for the awesome content. Keep going!

Mods can take risks and also have playerbases from the main game to draw on. Many of the games these hang off are(were?) very popular.

Multiplayer mods can also benefit from the rapid fire prototyping and stress testing ideas. If enough people are creating and playing mods then the best ones will rise to the top and get more attention and thus more people potentially helping or forking the idea into something new. And so it goes. It's a great breeding ground for ideas because you don't need to make a game from whole cloth, you just have to come up with ideas that fit into the game you are modding. Obviously it's still a lot of work, but it's nothing compared to making an entire game of comparable quality.

Not only do people often not know what they want (only which of the stuff that already exists they liked), they may not even accurately _tell_ you what they like. Because it may not fit their self-image or how they want to be perceived. For example you'll get, on average, very different answers from teenage boys if you ask them what they value in a game when their friends are around vs. when they're alone with you. They think they _ought_ to like violent fast-paced action games or whatever, so that's what they'll say. Even if they actually prefer The Sims. This is one reason why (poorly designed) focus group testing tends to produce the most boring, stereotypical, homogenized media. You get groupthink answers, not honest individual ones.

Superb video! Trust me though, as a game dev myself I know the reasoning behind not allowing modding is all reason #2, not hacking. Your example with Auto Chess is a modern case of modding being allowed in a highly popular competetive multiplayer game.
@Urre5

The thinking is, they don't "need" mods like they used to to stay relevant for longer if they just employ enough people to crank out content they can sell instead, meaning the game both gets the added content but they also benefit financially beyond the sale of the game itself like a game with a popular mod simply would. So it's just money really. Modding hurts the business model.

Mods are like free beta tests for big publishers to clone and profit off of. They don't have to waste time and money to R&D themselves, and can still profit. It's safe and profitable, the cornerstone of modern business.

I really love the clear voice and polish this video shows, I’ll definitely subscribe for more. However, I think your technical description of modding is slightly inaccurate. Games like Warcraft 3 avoided the ‘modding as hacking’ trap by ensuring each player was using the same custom map (basically a self-contained mod package). It’s important to distinguish asset swapping and ‘health=9999’ style hacks from mods that use original content and scripting within the game’s engine to present a wholly new gameplay mode.

During highschool my circle of friends lanned regularly, starting with doom. From the get go "it would be nice to be able to play on a map like school/bobs house/etc" and "it would be good if this was more realistic, maybe with M16s" were regular comments. CS was going to happen in one form or another and they have held their first mover advantage for a long time.

I love game mods, especially since a lot of them fix bad QoL in the regular game. I never understood why some people are always elitist about how you have to "keep the game pure" and shit. If for some weird reason you don't want some QoL and/or more content, just don't use it.

I love STALKER mods. Playing them is like playing a somewhat-different game entirely. I say somewhat because GSC really did lay the foundation but modders built upon that and more.

Mods move the bar forward simply by looking at the numbers. There are typically far more players than devs, and core game development time is vastly lower than said game's accrued exposure time. You're unlikely to have a good development team of a million, but a million players are a million opportunities to implement ideas in some fashion. When these ideas gain traction, a dedicated individual or commonly group therof can work to flesh it out, in this example being the impetus of a core game. Mods are essential in that they are practical surveys aiding rapid progression in this industry. Without them we just progress/change slower - what someone tells you they want isn't always what they're really looking for, but they'll gravitate to what they enjoy more organically than not.
