William V Man, only you can tell if the motor is running or not. You can pull it in a few minutes and test it.

Thank you for the kind words. No, I do not have any experience with a remote start. Volvo does NOT recommend starting the car and allowing it to warm up prior to driving. They recommend that you start the car and immediately start driving it moderately until it reaches its operating temperature. I do not quite understand your comment "when the engine is hits up there is no pressure"??? As for coolant, you should check the level no less than monthly. If the level is NOT between the minimum and maximum marks, add coolant when the car is cold. Also, the car should warm up pretty quickly, within 5 miles (8 km). If it is not warming up properly, you need to replace the thermostat with an OEM Volvo or Whaler thermostat.

Have you checked the AC video? Is the refrigerant level good?

kevinberdine Maybe the thermostat is bad. I usually fill the coolant system with the upper hose loose. As soon as it gets to that level, I connect the hose and top it off.

My guess would be the air door motor is broken.

+Robert DIY Well, I'm not sure of the reasoning behind it, Robert, but I've noticed that after changing coolant the system has to burp a few times to get all the air out and get totally filled. During that period I don't get full cabin heat. I've heard the same from other 850 owners. After topping up the last quart, and making sure there are no pressure leaks, the system blows much hotter. I don't claim to understand it, I've just seen it happen. :-)

William V Hey Will, none of us can. I just fixed one of these yesterday and should have the video posted soon. The motor that turns the diverter flap has broken. You can pull the glove box and find the motor back in the dash. I'm not 100% sure which one has broken but you can pull the motor, turn the little shaft and see if that changes the air flow for you. The motors are about the size of a small pack of cigarettes. - VENT motor

I have one bad which freezes me out in the summer. They don't go bad that often and are not a common problem. Usually only one of them will be bad. If that is the case, like most things, you'll have to dig deeper and you'll find them. If you have a pre-'96 car, you can read the codes under the hood. If you have a newer car, you will have to get the codes read at a Volvo shop or make a flashing code reader to trouble shoot the problem.

I got a tool from Home Depot with a flex extension. Red kit about the size of a large hand.

codes B1(ECC) read: 124, 126, 222; both sensors inner temp. and damper motor pass.side are affected. Have you any idea what has to be changed?

Both temperature sensors (behind the handles in the headliner) were broken maybe from cleaning with a tool. there is a code 124 or 126 if the wires of the small thermistor (3-4mm long) visible inside the hole are broken. The sensor has a small fan which is always running and blowing air through it and collects dirt easy, but you should clean them from outside only with pressurized air. They are available at $100 each on ebay or used from the Junkyard. Before reinstalling you should check two essential functions: 1. the little fan must be running when ignition is on. 2. the sensor visible inside the hole actually is a 10kohm thermistor. Measure between the 2 blue wires. it sould give 10kohm at 77 F (25°C) and round 3-4kOhm at 100F (40°C). check if it reacts to temperature. If there is no sgnal the wire is interrupted or the element is broken. Thermistors are cheap and you might get one similar at a electronics shop for $1. In my case the wires were broken. I had to remove the entire sensors (little tricky, due to handles, headliner and sunroof) and resolder them. after putting the item back and restetting the codes now the ecc works fine! It gets to almost centre of the gauge. Just one notch down from the centre line. I've tried having the A/C on too but didn't make a difference. Also was messing g around with have the recirc in manual, auto and off and didn't make a difference either. Thanks Ryan

Adding ac and ecc to a car that doesn't have it is not a simple task. In MY opinion, it would be cheaper and easier to replace the car with one that has it. Next someone will be wanting to add a turbo or convert a car to full electric. 🤷🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🙄

Chances are, your blend door arm or motor is broken on the drivers side of the system. You can pull down the lower dash panel, remove the knee bolster, then look for the arm that controls the air mix door. The damper door is not working, you hear the motors, but they motors are not working, the gears inside of them are likely stripped. Does one side get hot?

If the pipes are hot, the radiator is fine.

Probably incorrect gap on the compressor or defrost selected.

Robert DIY That was duper fast. Thanks Robert. So defrost not selected. What do you mean by gap on compressor? Could that have come about when I did the timing belt? Would that affect only heat? Because the compressor runs as it should when running ac.

+Leandro Fonseca the AC compressor has a clutch on the front of it. There should be a certain size gap between it and the pulley. If it's to thin, the compressor will stay engaged. Does the two lights on the panel flash when you start the car?

Those cars are very computerized. You'll need to take it to the dealer or a Volvo mechanic.

I went through 5 months of freezing hell and a hot summer of no AC, before someone clued me in on how the V70 heating system works. On the face of the ECC console, on the bottom right, you will see three small slits. Behind these is a very small fan that blows cabin air over a thermostat. Alas, dust can accumulate on the spindle of the fan and prevent it from moving. Volvo, alas, is too clever by half, and has a sensor on the fan shaft to identify if the fan indeed is rotating. If it is not rotating, it (being a computerized operation as Robert DIY notes) shunts all control operations, so nothing happens, no heat, no cooling, nada. You can adjust all the dials and nothing still will happen. Banging on the ECC might help (as VisualAudio7 suggests), but won't solve the fundamental problem. There are a couple ways to fix it. The first is to bring your vacuum cleaner outside into the car, turn it on and place the nozzle over the 3 slits to suck out the dust and get that fan spinning. Careful use of a bent paper clip can get the larger dust bunnys pulled out through the slits. If the dust is really heavy, you can remove the console and once you can access the mini-fan, use tweezers to pull off the dust from the spindle. Once you got the console out, you might also consider replacing any burnt out instrument lights.

@@RobertDIY I think its "blowing" out of every vent at the same time. If I spin the dial to change the air positions nothing happens. I believe the defrost works though.

If the heater core is connected, and you have turned the control to "full heat", you have to have a blend door problem. Are the heater hoses at the firewall hot?

The heater hoses are hot, i can hold them with my hand for 2 sec . i dont have anything to masure temp.

+Robert DIY the video you shared came very close to helping, but I am not quite sure what to look for. Have a 1999 v70 wagon with ecc. Heat is hot and ac is cold. Fan only blows thru center vents, not front defroster or feet.fan speed is responsive when turned up and down and blows strong thru center vents. I have replaced the cabin filter. I bought car about a year ago and it was really bad...but venting still does not work properly. Looking to replace control panel tomorrow...if that doesn't work, how do I replace the control arm or motors that control the venting? Thanks a million for the response.

no, i didn't! it's hard to explain. it smells like burning dust or mildew (like sometime have on basements). but only for couple seconds. tried different sprays - didn't help. it more feels in summer time when its hot, and smell come out thru the fans

I'd replace the fan if you have already replaced the controller. Does it change speeds if you bang the dash?

Hi Robert. Here's an update. It does not come on every time I hit it. Once running, the speed will change on its own at times. One constant is that the fan will not come on if the speed control slider is anywhere other than all the way high. If I put the slider all the way up, I can get it to start blowing about 70% of the time but it may or may not stay on as I'm driving. As soon as I start to lower the slider down just a little, it slowly turns off - every time. I read somewhere that the fan resistor is bypassed when speed control is on all the way high. This weekend I'm going to use your fan service video to clean and grease it. I was thinking I might as well have a resistor on hand too but I'm just not sure. If that doesn't work, I'll look into replacing the fan. Your input is valuable, thank you.

Sounds like it has a bad power stage, resistor.

Robert, thank you. It turns out the two-wire connector that hooks to the fan was going in and out of contact. I ran the fan while holding it in my hand. It was running until I childishly turned it toward my face to feel the air. When I turned it, the fan slowed to a stop. I put pressure on the wire connector and it fired back up.
