The 2 bucket wash method is by far the most popular way to "properly" wash a car in the auto detailing world... but does it really work like everyone says? In this video, I share why I really do not like the two bucket wash method as much as other detailers, and I share the way that I get around using the 2 bucket wash method when I detail my client's cars, and how I get great, and even BETTER results! Once again, Optimum No Rinse makes a strong appearance in this video, because there is no way of getting around it, ONR wash and wax is just an amazing product for more than we think! Follow along as I share why I do not use the two bucket wash method, and how I properly wash cars with optimum no rinse, and get superior results!

I only ever use two buckets of sparkling Evian. The fizz is proven to loosen any dirt trapped in my Peruvian llama wash mitt. For drying I have mountain wind shipped in from the Alps.

I can see where you’re coming from with this method, however when I perform a 2-bucket wash the rinse bucket is dirty but the wash bucket is always clean with only leftover wash solution remaining. I like using the 2-bucket method when I have adequate time to complete but I also like doing a rinseless wash when I’m doing a light dust/pollen-type wash for a quickie. Either way, great work brother... and keep it up!

@truthurtzjc

@gotfog

micro scratches in paintwork aren't actually swirl shaped. most are actually very fine straight lines. Reason they appear in swirls are because of the way light reflects from the paint, especially if its coming from a singular light source (this is why swirls are not as visible on a cloudy/overcast day)

I’ve been liking the rinseless wash method myself more and more this year! Quicker work and less clean up than a full hose wash. Your approach seems just like the Garry Dean method. The end result looked incredible! Was this just a wash, clay, and wax? What was your final step product? Also, did you do the wheels and tires outside with a hose or how do you approach that on a rinseless wash?

Love your method Wilson :) I never use the two bucket method and don't understand why it's still promoted. I'm so incredibly lucky I own 7 wash mitts. Always clean and thouroughly washed. I use one for the hood, then throw it into an empty bucket and grab a new one. Puts it into the bucket with soap and continue. Every time I've finished a panel I throw it away and put a completely clean mitt into the bucket. Always perfect result. Expensive ? Not at all - cheaper than buying a bucket with a grid :) Just see to that your mitts are washed in a washing machine with a good soap and at 60 degrees celsius when you're done. Perfect result every time :)

@1775Dreamer
@1775Dreamer 6 лет назад
A much cheaper alternative to distilled water (in the long run) is to buy a cartridge water filter that you can install between your customer's garden hose and your pressure washer. This will filter out most of the minerals in the water that leave water spots, and will also make the water clean the car better...

boil a kettle then the water is distilled we used to do it on car batteries when they got low on acid
@1775Dreamer

Boiling water in a kettle does not distill it. Unless you are catching the steam and condensing it back into water in another pan, just boiling water does nothing but CONCENTRATE the impurities in it, by boiling off part of the water...

UPDATE: I'm kind of in love with this method because I don't have to deal with a pressure washer, which means I don't need a water tank in my truck bed/trailer, which means i don't need 200 feet of hoses and attachments, which means I don't need a bunch of huge tool boxes to store all these different things, which means my rig can fit in the backseat of my truck, which means my equipment is less likely to be stolen/damaged, which means my setup and tear down times doesn't involve 20 tool boxes/bags and rounding up 5 different hoses, which means I save money in the long run, which means this method is awesome, which mean Luke is a genius (regardless of who's method this originated from [referring to Gary Dean]), which means Wilson Auto Detailing is the best detailing channel on RU-vid and the most trustworthy one for sure, AND IT'S ALL FOR FREE, which means I am greatful for all of this valuable information that helps me run my business and become better/more efficient, which means..... Best method to wash a car. Lol

At first, I thought you were 'nuts'. But, the more you got into explaining and demonstrating, I think it's worth a try because I do my personal cars every two weeks, and they stay garaged when not in use, so there is not a lot of grime to fool with. Would save me a lot of time. Worst thing I hate to hear is someone say "we have always done it that way', and are resistant to trying something new.

It’s a good question, not every car needs to be clay bar to before it is waxed, but is far is it marring the paint yes it will Marr the paint to a degree but once again it’s one of those things that is so minimal and sometimes Claying is so necessary that you can’t get around it

The first year I detailed I did the 2 bucket...then I found ONR did a ton of research and gave it a shot...I haven't looked back since then. I love it! Sure there are times you need to presoak the vehicle or need running water to knock heavy soil off. Most of my clients are daily drivers and the cars are already beat from a detailer's eye....but the owner's generally don't see the it, even the ones that are "car guy's" still don't have a detailers eye to see all the imperfections we see. Wilson Auto Detailing - We are brothers in arms my man! What you are doing is essentially applying proper detailing/polishing methods to washing a car! I'm also a pro detailer in Canada and I've been using this EXACT system for the last three + years! Why? Only makes PERFECT sense from a swirl prevention point of view. I actually mix 5 ounces of the ONR & Wax solution into 4 gallons of a 5 gallon bucket that has a LID on it and it lasts for multiple washes as I NEVER have to RE-dip ANY of my VERY plush 16X16 inch MF wash cloths into the solution - EVER! So the solution is ALWAYS clean. The only variant is that I ONR one panel at a time and then dry it right away with a spritzed waffle weave drying cloth to add a bit of shine and protection with Chemical Guys V7 it also adds a bit of "lubricant" to a dry drying towel. The V7 is good as it goes on and off super easy but I must admit it doesn't last very long. I"m going to give Sonax Brilliant Shine Quick Detailer a try next detailing season. Happy washing the RIGHT way ! : )

@@wilsonautodetailing Hey my pleasure . . . we are all a part of a community, sharing our adventures and discoveries and encouraging each other. So thanks to you too! : ) And I hope you don't get pushback on your idea because first, you certainly don't deserve it and second, it makes perfect sense. You would no longer WASH your car with ONE mitt any more than you would POLISH a car with just ONE polishing pad! Even if you could be SURE that the pad was clear of corrected paint and clear of polish build up, it just wouldn't make sense to use the one pad on the whole car. EXACT same idea with the ONE mitt idea! The two bucket method is tired and past its due date. I predict that we will see its demise among people who DO KNOW what they are doing in a few short years. Others might want to stick to their one or two bucket ways but then ignorance is bliss. Hey, that's OK too . . . after all, they're only CARS : )

Thank you for the video. Finally someone states the obvious about the 2-bucket method. Anyone who thinks 2 bucket is significantly better than one bucket, believes what they've been told because they idea was sold well. Sure the dirt particles drop to the bottom of the bucket. What people must not realize or pay attention to, is the upward force water has on any object in it. Also coming into play is fluid dynamics when the water is disturbed. If we all agree during our rinse, the particles of dirt, fallout, bird poop, minerals, etc, are all in rinse bucket now. They do not drop to the bottom of the bucket like sand in an hour glass. The volume of each particle has an upward force (buoyancy) acting on it, therefore they really behave more like they are suspended in the rinse water then dropping like a lead balloon. Add to this effect, fluid dynamics and the force of turbulence when the water is disturbed and you pretty much have a constant "dust storm" in the rinse bucket. Yeah I'm sure some particles make their way below the grit guard, at least the ones that do make their way down, but what about the ones that don't make it down and the ones that land on the grit guard itself. It really doesn't matter anyway because once you generate turbulence again you are actually creating a force, hitting the sides and bottom of the bucket pushing dirt back up and past the grit guard. Imagine putting a fan in front of a chain link fence, then dropping artificial snow between the fan and fence. How many snow flakes do you think the fence will trap? And let me tell you, the power and fluid dynamics of water is much more influential than air. If the grit guard traps a piece of dirt, it may only be for a split second as the water continues to act on it finally pushing it back up. Does the 2-bucket and grit guard help remove some chances of reintroducing rinsed dirt back onto your MF?...sure probably, but how much? One last thing...Fill a clear jar with dirty water, shake it, put it on the counter with a light behind it, then count the minutes it takes for ALL the dirt to settle to the bottom and the water is clear again. Then give it a very light stir and see how easy it is to make the water dirty. Great video and thanks for having the balls to post it.

This one is not a hate comment. It's sharing my experience. I use to used ONR before. As my truck (Nissan Navara) was new and as I have a lot of microfiber, I used 1 microfiber per panel and fold it after each pass.(Before that I spray some ONR on the panel with an hand pump). When the panel is done, I take another microfiber. And guess what ? It scratched the paint so bad. Why ? Because my clear coat is soft. Before, I got a Mercedes, the last C-class. (I sold this sh** because Mercedes makes only lemon cars now...but that's another story). I used to use two microfiber only for the entire car. No scratch. Clear coat is hard. The clear coat is an important parameter. You can't apply the method to every car. (if my english sounds weird, that's because I'm french. By the way, thanks for all your videos. Greetings from Reunion Island)

So I still use the two buckets method and apply some common sens. If my car is very dirty, I change the rincing water one time or more if necessary. And if I use a hose, I can rinse the mitt directly with the hose. No big deal.

Luke do you ever use the 2 bucket method ? I use ONR from time to time but still feel to do the Job properly I need to pre wash then shampoo using 2 buckets. Love the vids dude
@NipkowDisk

It took me a while to actually trust ONR, and I still pre-treat my vehicles via a pump sprayer with ONR solution (or sometimes Opti-Clean at one ounce per half-gallon of water). But it does work, and it works well; I haven't used the two-bucket method in probably a year now.

I agree that ONR is great and I cant say that the 2 bucket system is noticeably different. However, I dont think it is the same as using 1 bucket. You are right that alot of dirt is in the rinse bucket but if you are doing it right by the end of the wash there is no dirt in the bottom of my wash bucket. I've noticed all the dirt stays below the grit guard. Love the channel and hearing your input and tips. Keep up the good work sir!

Hi Wilson, do you notice marring on the soft clear coat paint in black car after rinseless wash using kirkland mf? How many washes before you graduated them for exterior use? Thanks
@wilsonautodetailing
@wilsonautodetailing 6 лет назад
I do not, otherwise I wouldn’t use them of course. Honestly I believe this is another area of detailing that is WILDLY overthought and people really don’t apply a lot of logic to these situations. Whether you go with Kirkland’s brand which is ultra plush or the rag company’s edgeless towels, both start to break down when you’re using and washing and drying them, and the difference in how they break down is just so minimal that I think to argue that one leave more marring after let’s say two washes is just impossible to prove

Can I ask why you would use a waterless wash for a vehicle as opposed to just washing and drying the vehicle as normal? I’m curious to know the reasons behind why you’d use this and how you determine when to use this method.

Very good point on this. Using one bucket with a bunch of mits or cloths (your choice) and your cleaner will and should do you just fine

I like to fill a spray bottle with the onr solution from the bucket and I pre spray the panel before I wipe it down. I don't know if it helps or not, but it probably doesn't hurt to have more lubrication on the panel. Keep the videos coming!

@@wilsonautodetailing I did the ONR wash today! I used less than 1/2 gallon of distilled water, 3 microfiber towels, and 2 drying towels ( I saved the solution for next time!). Total wash time was 40 minutes. Car looks amazing! I have pics, but this is not the place for that... The only way I'll ever wash my car again. Thank you so much for your advice and vids!

I use just one bucket but I use 5 or 6 wash mitts. I use a different mitt each time I touch the paint. (Ex. One mitt for the hood, one mitt for the roof, one mitt for the trunk and so on). I have always had awesome results and the solution in the bucket is as clean when I’m done as when I started.

I agree with you. For a long time I used to be a 2 buckets guy for a time but after watching your video and other I decided to switch to 1 bucket with muti mitt or rinse because it a lot more efficient and use way less water.

I, too, have NEVER understood or agreed with the logic of the "2-bucket" system for exactly the same reason you've cited. However, unlike your process (which I fully intend to try), I've used a different system that used no buckets; just putting the soap onto a microfiber glove then fully rinsing the glove with my hose before repeating the process. Regardless, I'm definitely interested in trying your system. Thanks for the video.
