In this video I explain how to put line on a spinning reel without the line twist and tangle problems that you sometimes will get with a spinning reel. A friend of mine taught me how to do this a few years back and this knowledge has served me well.

Great tip been doing it like that for 20 plus years, I do place the spool of line in water while I load the spool, and keep tension with my fingers you get a little wet but you end up with a well loaded reel. Enjoy your videos

THANK YOU!!!! After taking many years off from fishing, mostly because everything I had was stolen so many years ago it disgusted me, I got back into with spinning reels last year. Towards the end of the year I was having some horrible line issues to which I would strip some line off and start over. I was raised on bait casters and wished I hadn’t picked up a spinning reel, but I did enjoy it a little more until the headaches started to remind me.

The part where you said “no matter what type of line it is, as long as you have the label pointed to the sky, it will come off the proper way” is entirely false. Depending on the manufacturer line is spooled in different directions. Although most are spooled the same, some are not, I’ve seen it. The key is that you want the line to come off counter clockwise.
@stevestumbaugh8982
@stevestumbaugh8982 4 года назад
I agree totally . The label has nothing to do with anything. If the reel winds on clockwise, the other spool needs to be coming off anti clockwise.
@hardrockminer-50
@hardrockminer-50 4 года назад
@@stevestumbaugh8982 this clockwise tip is great but, clockwise on the reel looking from where? I just now see that it's looking from handle through reel to spool. Gotta go wind up a new reel.

Ohhhh so that’s why I’m making a tangled up mess each try and have to cut it off wasting line. I was following label up and that’s wrong for me. Wish I’d ran across this comment earlier as would saved me mass frustration. Damn near took it to a shop!
@CB4basser1
@CB4basser1 4 года назад
Exactly Redline. Not all manufacturers are alike. Case in point I just spooled on some 6 lb trilene, the line is supposed to come off the Spool in the counterclockwise rotation, the label is facing towards my bed. The correct way of saying it is the line is supposed to come off counter-clockwise, nothing to do with the label. Mike Iaconelli and others will tell ya the same 😅

Good video, I agree from experience if the line does not come off the spool with the same rotation as the reel it will tend to birdcage and you have a mess, especially if there is any slack on the cast. If you spool in the wrong direction then you can usually put a heavy weight on the line and cast as far as you can, then it tends to reel back on correctly.

Because of the size difference in the spools, reel vs new line spool, you will get line twist if you keep spool label up. Just watch the loop coils as you're loading the reel. When you see the coils getting smaller just flip the spool. I do it with my feet. Just keep alternating the spool, label up and label down. Have done it this way for years and don't have a problem with line twist. I hope this helps someone. Great tip on the warm water. I never knew. Tight lines brothers.

I have, on multiple occasions, seen supply spools (what you buy at the store when you get fishing line) loaded backwards. Most of them seemed to be large spools, like what is used by tackle shops. So, always check the direction the line is coming off the spool. Usually, you'll want the label facing up. But, not always. I think a lot of spools used by tackle shops are loaded differently, but I don't know why.

Dont depend on the spool label to be on the same side of the spool for all lines. Pay attention so the line comes off of the spool the same direction that it will be loaded onto your reel. The Hot Water trick will help set your line to the smaller spool of your reel.
@mathmotivation
@mathmotivation 2 года назад
Yes, once in a while they mess up on this! Also, if I see a twist set in, I will flip the spool for a few turns to reverse it. The line spool is a bigger diameter than your reel so a little twist can set in. The hot water trick is a good one that I will try - will reduce birds nests from line coming off the reel by itself.

@ARCSTREAMS
@ARCSTREAMS 2 года назад
i have seen so many vids on how they think a proper spooling should be done and no way to tell what is the correct method, but a thought came to mind that i can spool line on my reel any way and then when im done simply get a large bearing snap swivel and attach my line to it and use the snap to attach it to a fence and then start walking back and unspooling it all the way ,then slowly put a bit of tension on the whole length of line and let go a few time then start spooling it all back on, i believe this helps stretch the memory out and the bearing swivel removes any twist on the entire line so that the whole length of it is straight without twist before you start reeling it in, and after that you can always dunk the spool in hot water and leave it till it cools down or leave it in there for a few days which helps to remove memory and like you said shape it to that diameter,, let me know what you think about using the snap swivel like that
@MidwestBassHunter
@MidwestBassHunter Год назад
I think the snap swivel will work, but it better be a high quality swivel. Some swivels don’t swivel well when there is pressure on them.
@ARCSTREAMS
@ARCSTREAMS Год назад
@@MidwestBassHunter correct get one expensive high quality ball bearing snap swivel and even spray some wd40 or oil it up to help even more , this is also why i say to put tension and release a few times to help it remove any twists ,doing this intermittently while reeling the line

if you have a boat, you can put it on any way it comes off the spool. All you have to do is let the line off the reel out behind the boat with nothen tied to it as you idle. Let pretty much all the line out and drag it behind the boat for a couple minutes and then reel it back on. The line will be completely straight no twist what so ever. Its good to do this every so often and you will never have trouble with twist.

Good timing on this video. I bought a brand new spool for this year and it has the worst memory I've ever had. To make matters worse, I'm going down to a 1000 size reel this year so the spool size is even smaller. I just respooled it and I'm trying the warm water trick. We'll see how it goes...

Sometimes the best solution is the simple one. I did one last week with the pencil and it was a nightmare!!!! I am going to reload all my rods today.

Good point I should’ve shown the knot. It’s hard to properly video record a knot.
