I had high hopes for a new Yaesu replacement for the FT-857D or FT-818ND at the Dayton hamfest.

Something is going on there. Icom and yaesu have been steering clear of eachother with their new releases. Icom is focused on these small higher frequency things and yaseu has been doing a lot of mobile rigs which notably icom has not been.

Before the 818 was discontinued, i was going to purchase one in addition to my 891. Two radios for the price of the 705. I am now considering a 705, mainly due to size. That and the weight of it and needing less battery. It would be nice if yeasu would have an ic 705 competitor.

I guess it all depends on what you start out with as your first radio. I'm a fan of consistency. In my case, it was great learning the menu for the 818ND and then being able to use the 857/897 without any fuss.
@nvrumi
@nvrumi Месяц назад
I have the FT-8xx series (817ND for the baby) and they are great rigs, particularly for their age. I don't find the menu system in these rigs to be onerous. However, the newer FT rigs have more features, so more menu entries. I have to work with the FT-891 more to get a sense for its menus and intend to put it in my 4Runner, maybe this summer. It will be fun to be able to use 40m on the road and then do POTA activations when the weather is poor from inside the rig.

@@TheTechPrepper the whip antenna I have claims it’s good for 20 watts, so that’s all I throw at it. @Eric10179
@Eric10179 Месяц назад
Unfortunately, I think we may not see any new announcements from any of the big companies announcing radios like these older, ruggedised, manpackable, Yaesu rigs. My fear is that this design philosophy has completely gone to the wayside, and it’s an absolute shame. Not only did these radios look better (IMO), but they served a specific purpose perfectly, better than any other radio out there. On another note, it will be interesting to see how your operating practices change in a couple of years when the solar cycle starts to come down. The 818 might start to struggle a bit. It will be interesting to see!

I hope you are wrong, but I have heard rumors that Yaesu was working on what they call an "IC-705 killer." I'll wait a bit longer. Yaesu's half hearted followup to the FT-897D and FT-857D was the FT-991A. All band all mode is only part of the secret sauce for portable and ECOM operations. You need a modest to low current draw on receive and ruggedness. A carry handle on a power hog of questionable durability doesn't make a good portable or ECOM rig. Icom had similar offerings for all band all mode that failed due to power consumption and heating. Let me clarify that I am only speaking of 100W would be shack-in-the-box rigs.

Seeing a new radio release from a vendor is one of the last reasons to go to Dayton. Hope you reconsider next year. Dayton is more about the experiences, the talks and seminars, and the swag (trading/buying/selling/giving/receiving) much more than it is about seeing a prototype of a radio under a glass case. But most of all, it's about the people you get to meet and spend time with there. Hope you make it next year because it would be great to see you.

I was also hoping for a new radio from Yaesu to fill the void left by the discontinued 857d. They should do a refresh to the 891 and call it the FT-891A. Give it VHF/UHF/HF all modes. That would be a great competitor to the Icom IC-705. Oh well I guess we will just have to wait for next year.

And this is a shame. I found a guy in Texas who will replace the display in my FT897D for 150. I purchased the repro display he recommended as there are several sources. the 891/991A are NOT replacements. Power hungry on receive is the main detractor. N9SAB and I are prototyping a field portable delta loop for 40-10m, but you need a tall tree to hang it or a pole at least 32 feet tall. Probably not something you'd be able to use in your terrain. Stay tuned.
