"No One Ever Knows Anyone" from The Rules of Attraction (2002)

These scenes were shot at the University of Redlands, just near Palm Springs, in the middle of a Summer heatwave. The crew was wearing shorts and T-shirts during shooting because it was so hot. For the ampitheater sequence we used a combination of white "snow blankets", foam, cornstarch snowflakes, and snow generated from chipping large slabs of ice that we trucked in. The snowflake that turns into a tear was computer generated, and was impossibly difficult to achieve on our budget back in 2002.
Note: I am the director of The Rules of Attraction (2002) and this clip is fair use under U.S. copyright law because it is (1) non-commercial, (2) transformative in nature, (3) uses no more of the original work than necessary for the video's purpose, and (4) does not compete with the original work and could have no negative affect on it's market.

the whole film was fantastic, but these 5 minutes were priceless...characters revealing their private emotions...unfortunately, rejection is more common than acceptance.

the main characters inability to communicate their feelings, even to them selves, out of an avoidance of wanting to feel uncomfortable in the short term, is ultimately the thing which insures that they remain unhappy and alone.

She had enough of Sean for sleeping with Lara. She chooses her "old boyfriend" Victor who genuinely can't even remember who she is. And he's also sleeping with Lara too! Lauren's speech that Sean repeats to Paul is essentially the whole message of the movie

One of the most powerful scenes in the movie I think was during Sean's rejection to Paul in the snow. Given the combination of the dramatic setting with the snow falling, the sense and feeling of being alone, yet self-wallowing, the music, the dialogue to that of which Sean recycles Lauren's same line she gave him is unsettling, yet cathartic to the point that makes you reflect to think have you ever really known anyone?

One of the most beautiful movies ever made - it's one of those rare film that show how real life can be depressing but hautingly beautiful at the same time. Superficiality is the only thing that controls our instincs and passions - however, there are some moments like this (where the snow-flake lands on Sean's face) in which the beauty of the moment prevails...

This movie is outstanding, and is one of my top ten favorite movies of all time. I just find it to be very emotionally powerful. On the surface it seems to be about self-absorbed people doing shallow things, but it has this incredible weight behind it, this dark forces moving around under the surface. To me it seems like the themes of the movie are disconnection, alienation, failure of communication, isolation. This movie has really stood the test of time for me. It's one of those rare movies I can watch over and over again, and it always affects me. I find it to be a very profound, very spiritual commentary on our culture. It's one of the few movies that I know of from recent times which I would call truly artistic. This movie has so much weight to it. I love it. Thank you to the director.

This movie withstands the test of time like no other for me. I first watched it going into my teens and was enthralled with the idea of living like Sean. I felt as though he was free and able to do whatever because he would get fucked up whenever he wanted. The raw emotion they display towards each other was difficult for me to grasp. As an adult who had been through a lot of what they experience, it now means so much more. I always wanted to say thank you to the director for this beautiful art. I truly cannot think of a better film adapted from a novel than this one. It's not like it's an improvement or some form of adaptation of the novel, it's like it IS the novel. Bret Easton Ellis has an undeniable style and signature and it's captured cinematically throughout this film so, so well. American Psycho will always be my favorite B.E.E. novel but the film adaptation (aside from Christian Bale's impeccable casting) was essentially a Disney flick in comparison. This deserves more views. This movie deserves more views. The Rules of Attraction (the novel) was a masterpiece...and this movie was a masterpiece just as much. I can't honestly say that about any other novel-to-film adaptation. This stands alone. This was uploaded by the director, so maybe there's some off-chance it will be seen, but congratulations on a truly masterful work with every important bit of the source material fully intact. You made one of the most underrated films of all time. Deal with it. Rock and roll.

My favorite scene in the movie. I watched this movie a few times and read the book a couple times in college. Everyone single in college must read and watch, especially you freshmen and freshwomen. Cautionary tale of finding yourself, good times, fun parties, cheap drugs, easy lays, love and acceptance. This scene hit me. "No one ever knows anyone." Symbolic of how shallow and clique-ridden college kids can be. I wasn't able to know any girls that I liked because they wouldn't let me know them. They either had someone already or kept up their guards constantly. Too many creeps around so I don't blame them for being cautious. College and life can be sucky and busy, I guessed for them too, so couldn't blame them for being focused and dedicated. Luckily they fell down on my priorities because I had schoolwork and jobs and graduation to focus on. None of them mattered in the end. People in college can't know each other because some of us just don't have the time nor energy and can't afford any outside distractions. Nor the confidence to confide in anyone to let them know us. Too many young schmucks and tramps in college are being stupid and superficial (or just mentally flawed) so much so that we have to keep our guards up. So, this story's a good lesson and thanks Bret Easton Ellis for giving words to the world and to Roger Avary for giving vision to the story. Keep it up. Rock N Roll.

I love movies like this. Still, remember when it got released in theaters and I was working at the movie theater at the time. This is such an underrated film. It didn't get much praise from the critics. It's such a shame because this is one of my favorite movies. It's so dark, mysterious, and deep. I feel so bad for Laura when she realizes the man she's been dying to see doesn't even remember who she is. Then Paul finally confessing his love for Sean and getting rejected. The snow makes it beautiful, yet so tragic. It's very fitting for this scene. I wish I knew what song is playing in the background, I would love to know so I can listen to the whole track.

I find Paul's character really endearing. Right from the get-go where Paul talks about not believing the shit that spills forth from his mouth right up until 5:11-5:12 where you can see the utter anguish etched on his face. It's a shame Bret Easton Ellis didn't explore his character further.

Sean is very much a narcissist in RoA, but he's very emotionally unstable. Like Patrick, though, he's very disconnected with himself. He passively and uninterestedly describes very emotional response he has, the same way Patrick very indifferently describes his crimes and psychosis. I think there's a very interesting contrast between their characters that hasn't really been touched on by Ellis, and I hope he finds interest in exploring that more in the future, He did it with Clay, after all.

Roger Avary, first off thank you so much for creating this absolute gem of a film. Will always go down as one of my favorites. I watch it all the time. I have to know though if the end was supposed to be an alternate reality to the opening segments of the film? As in Sean never hooked up with Kelly, Paul did not get beaten up, and Lauren did not suffer the unfortunate event with the NYU film student? You see Sean leaving the party and the other two (Paul and Lauren) staring at him outside. I always speculated this was a possibility but could never find anything suggesting it. Anyway, you probably won’t see this comment but if you do, just know your work is very much appreciated and I would love to hear your personal insights. Thank you!

The mind might forget but the subconscious anchors itself to universal truths that we may be too naïve to wholly understand at first. @avary
@avary 5 лет назад
lina smith The movie takes place in an indistinct timescape that is based mostly on 1985 to 1987, but recognizing Bret’s references to Renoir’s La regle du jeu, I decided to have costume designer Louise Frogley reference the fashions of Coco Chanel in the early 1930s, at the cusp of WWII. I also allowed influences from the years we made it, 2001-2002, because the themes of the book are universal generationally, and span multiple periods. So it exists in this polylinear timescape.

I first met Bateman Jr in American Psycho, he seemed aloof. Almost emotionally unconnected, like a young developing replica of Patrick. Maybe this all happened before he visited his father in hospital and he was described? Because he is nothing like I expected from reading AP, he almost seems just on the edge of innocent/playful/loveable rogue in this film. Right before he shifts into the traits of a psychopath. Weird.
