If I remember correctly, Richard Clark did this in either a late 80’s Buick Grand National or a Ford Thunderbird, back in the late 89’s early 90’s. He was the king of SQ back then. Won tons of trophies from IASCA sound competitions for several years. He perfected the system by going to an aperiodic set up for the subs. This requires a semi-permeable membrane that again if I remember correctly was the rear panel of the enclosure. He then further perfected it by coming up with his own product that went over the face of the sub like a grill. Apparently it allowed for an almost ideally damped response curve. He used 15” subs, with the speed of 8” subs and nearly flat response down to 20HZ. His system was compromised of (2) waveguide horns under the dash, (2) 10” mid/mid-bass, and (2) 15” subs. (3) Alpine 250 watt x2 amps to power the speakers. Back in the day it was considered the best of the best. Love what you are doing, keep it up.
@hadbl12
@hadbl12 Год назад
Explain what “speed” of an 8 inch sub means. A 15 inch sun playing at 33htz moves 33 times per second. A 8 inch sub playing 33 hertz also moved 33 times per second? So how is one sub faster than the other? I’m not trying to be a smart azz, just trying figure it out!
@michaelboner5118
@michaelboner5118 Год назад
When referring to “speed” of an 8” sub. It is reference of what also may be called attack & decay. How fast a speaker starts and stops when producing a frequency. Attack is how quick it starts, decay is how slow it stops. Due to sheer size\mass differences between an 8” and 15” sub, the 8” will start and stop quicker. With an aperiodic style enclosure, this dampens the speaker in an ideal way. It helps large subwoofers stop much faster. In essence you can select a slightly higher crossover frequency as the larger sub will react with less unfavorable effects. Ie. say 80-100HZ versus 50-60HZ for a 15” sub. Hopefully this helps with my initial statement.

What's the deal with horns? I hear a compression horn can act as a mid and tweeter simultaneously and highpass from like 400hz up. Is it in any way possible to have an SQ setup that's 3-way (sub, midbass, and whatever, or sub, mid, and tweeter) that gets 145-155db on the sub stage with the front stage more or less keeping up with it? (more for the low side of that SPL, less for the high side) Size constraints are a small single cab truck with a manual trans (so no speakers in the kick), and I only want to use AT MOST half my truck bed for the blow-through box(roughly 16.5 tall x 40 wide x 36 long/deep dimensions, can extend to 17 tall x 52 wide, but only 20 deep if doing a slot loaded IB blow through with three SI SQL-15s). I'd really prefer than nice round 150, and 155 is about my soft tolerance limit for bass. Haven't heard a 160+ car yet from the inside and kinda don't care if I do since that's not a goal of mine.

Although a large ported box with a low tuning will sound similar with extra headroom in the bass extension, or just adding a pipe that treats the trunk as a slightly leaky ported box and have a 15Hz tuning. The low resonance won't cost you output up higher either compared to the same infinite baffle. Whilst you can use your trunk space, it will restrict the sound a bit.

@@666Necropsy The first time I tested a dipole sub with some super crappy 12" in a small room, I was instantly amazed because of the details. Even though the sub was totally busted. I kept thinking about it and ultimately got a car that had a trunk that was almost like made for having a sub in the middle. Did an install with good 12" sub and fell in love about the idea where there is no enclosures (for the bass at least). Then after years I got two 18" Electro-Voice DL18MT's, old 90's PA subs for cheap and just fitted them on a big board. I tested them outside, as I'd been dreaming of a sub bass capable small(ish) PA -system that doesn't make the neighbours or anyone living nearby mad (even at like multiple miles away). Nowadays I myself pretty much hate the overly high SPL -oriented cars blasting some single note bass songs nearby. So I can imagine how it would feel waking up or noticing a bumping bass when you're going to sleep that just keeps on playing forever (in your usual forest raves, from 10pm to like 6am+). For example one time we had just one simple big Peavey 2x18" PA sub enclosure and in the beginning of the night a few of my friends went close to the nearest house, more than a mile away (which also was behind a small hill) to check if the bass carries to there and when they got out of the car to listen, they said it sounded like there had been a party going in the nearby house. I've tested the two 18" in a large wooden building and they went nicely down to 20 something Hz. One time I took them to a DJ gig in a really old bar in a wooden building. There I had some problems with uneven bass as I didn't have enough time to EQ the system. I also had a pair of 15" "modern" car subs and they too sounded great outside WITHOUT an enclosure. And I bet the bass couldn't be heard after like 50 meters or so, but the first 10-20 were very nice. Inside an aparment they would shake the floor with Indigo Children (JLE Dub). When I had the system in my car, I noticed that on the outside, the bass seemed to attenuate on the sides of the car, which makes sense as it worked kinda like a dipole. So I think one can blast their music much louder with a free air/infinite baffle sub system than they can with any enclosure without messing with the people around.

It sounds like crap with seats up. Almost becomes a fourth order bandpass. Rattles the trunk like crazy, but about a 50% loss of sounds in the cabin. I have to crank the power to hear it properly, which these subs can't handle. I would need the ZVX-18's to play with the seats up.

Fantastic set-up!! The more you seal off the trunk from the cabin, the louder it will be. The combined VAS for those woofers is only 4 cubes shy of the impalas trunk volume. Shoud hit Fs of 24hz, & easily play subsonic frequencies below 20hz with authority!!

This is the build, you just take them outside first and set it to 5 and let it rumble the neighborhood with a low vibe; quote a box price of $8000 and from the look on their face adjust the price/bass accordingly. If they wrap their legs around you and kiss ya, then you turn the bass way down of course; all negeotions first before romance....

I considered doing this with 2 15s to save weight & space but instead made a pair of small (about .7cuft ea)10" boxes with Infinity Kapppas (selectable impedence). Plenty loud at about 1000W but haven't tested spl yet. Recently modded the boxes with slaps 10" radiators. Definately louder and retains the SQ of a sealed system! I'd love to try this IB setup some time with the proper drivers!

Been watching you for years so I know I’m preaching to the choir brother but….. A 140 at 20hz is like a 170 at 50hz so the whole spl thing , if we’re gonna do it, needs to be rethought 😂 If your peaking at 38hz with two 18s in infinite baffle your trunk is too small for those ie the vas isn’t right but I know you already know Somethings not right because they should peak more into the 20hz or even teens. I love ib and of course as you said it’s not all about the spl, ib has a special sound to it that a box just can’t reproduce.

With the same subs in a 4th order bandpass through the rear deck and it was the most amazing experience. Literally raise your hair with the sunroof open and no rattles on the car 20-80hz. for 2 18's, I wouldn't call this infinite baffle as the airspace needed for 2 18's in a sealed box would be close to the size of your trunk anyway. I would maybe call this "trunk IB" to note that it isn't true free air IB. You would definitely be able to measure a difference in frequency response in the cabin if you vented your trunk vs closed it. But you're totally right, IB and trunk IB are the way to go for SQ builds. Amazing transience, they dig deeper than sealed can, and dont have peaky response like ported... and as you showed here, will still absolutely SLAM
@robkenji4371
@robkenji4371 Год назад
That sounds awesome. If you extended the middle and side supports would it help the woofers front and back wave be more focused and tighten the response? Some sort of aperiodic setup you have plenty of space to manipulate the baffle back and forth and 18s are great for this.

This is exactly what i want to do with two HT-18 v3 subwoofers. My enclosure area is a little more tricky then yours is though so im going to have to go to a car audio place that can figure it out because of a hump where the enclosure starts leading into the trunk. I think it can be done though even if its jury rigged to work.
@PHILLY214
