And Jamie once again demonstrates his unique status as the only one who's actually familiar with regular home cooking by remembering the existence of the microwave.
@@YaaLFH Pretty common in the UK to warm up a cup of milk in the microwave. The horrifying thing is seeing someone stick a teabag in cold water and then put it in the microwave.
My friend joined me in watching this during Barry's turn, and she's never watched Sorted. She point-blank asked, 'Why did they hire this sous chef?' 🤣🤣
Oh yeah I just returned to watching sorted. How did he become a sous-chef? Is it like a challenge he won or did he went and become a sous-chef somewhere.
@@TutchMaibaulz hes not really a sous chef, he just won the cooking badges challenge, theoretically this should bring him to sous chef level, but well, yeah. hes really more of a faux chef
I can’t believe nearly every dish used the air fryer the other day, when you had free reign of the kitchen…now you were limiting yourself to “no pans” and you didn’t use it! 🤣🤦🏻♂️
Id say the stand-out performance this episode was from Mike. Getting the bone marrow and mushrooms roasting from the start was a great idea without pans, and the polenta as a base was excellent. Most everyone brought their A-game, but that initial direction allowed for the end dish to be as it was
@@MrAndMrsGameNight I don't remember them including sheet pans/cookie sheets in their list of items they couldn't use. I immediately thought the same: Sheet pan!
I concur, Doctor. They finally figured out the formula as a group with Mike building the base of open possibilities for everyone to build on. No one tried to be a hero and no one panicked.
Mike crushed it here. His placing the marrow bones on the mushrooms was a stroke of genius and he *way* underrated himself. 9.5/10, Mike. You deserve it. 🎉
I’d love a “no heat” episode of Pass It On, no hob, no oven, no microwave, no air fryer, no toaster, etc. Maybe a good one for a heat wave in the summer?
@@edfleming9600 not neccessarily, fish doesn't neccessarily need to be cooked to be eaten, think sushi, and there are ways of curing meat, like with lemon juice, that allow meats like steak to be served essentially raw, think steak tartare.
Mike always underscores himself. He did so well! Started the boys off strong, cleaned down while cooking, and didn't have a Huttlestorm (beyond not knowing how to heat up milk 😆). I would have scored you higher, Mike!
Hey, Mike definitely deserves a badge for teamwork AND/or mis-en-place! Notice how all the guys said "looks like I didn't do much" as there was Mike's base and lasting 3 passes dish is geniunely a Mike's dish isn't it? MIKE FTW!!!!!11🥳
Fusion food pass it on, write a lot of countries on the wheel, and everyone coming in have to spin it and then put that country's twist on the dish. And the order could be picked by Janice!! And please include our dear Chef Kush. It will be chaos!!
I love pass it ons where each person has their own goal to meet aside from the dish as a whole! Adds a little bit of self interested chaos to what should be a cooperative effort.
For such a weird restriction, this was probably the most coherent, calm, and "professionally made" pass it on in a VERY long time, if not ever. It feels like all of the "normals" have REALLY hit their stride lately and I think there should be a Sous-Chef rematch.
All the usual Barry mockery aside - I love how excited he got by what Mike left him. Everyone was surprised and pleased by what they got today and that was a fun change. Even if I adore the usual panic 😆
honestly so impressed by this episode. everything that was started got used, and everyone was on the same page and could see the previous person's vision. super proud of the boys. maybe this is the ideal order?
I must say Mike was absolutely incredible this episode and I've now realized why we hardly see him going first because there's no chaos when he's leading the charge. He imediately started with the base starch with such a creative loophole and started roasting what needed to be roasted. He had an idea and ran with it but also allowed the other members to add to the dish. A standing ovation to Mike and the incredible teamwork from the Sorted Recipe Relay Team!
@@StuartB_ how does a bowl become a pan? pans have a handle, pots two and bowls none... you can't just rename things because you couldn't think of them
Ì think this is the first time I've ever seen constant progression throughout the episode. Each one built upon what the others had made in a nice way and it all came together nicely. Well done!
Wow, so much growth the episode! Mike actually picking a sort of direction! Barry not doing his usual "The baseline is a 10, I knock myself down a point if I mess something up" routine! Ben not going crazy with the ingredient that others don't like. Jamie choosing a whole number and showing a LOT of (unneeded) humility!
As someone from the UK I am so confused by people saying mike used a pan haha. Today I learned that a baking tray is called a sheet pan in some parts of the world.
in america or at least here, a baking tray is flat with only one edge with a lip on it for grabbing, the rest of the three sides have no edge. what mike used was definitely a pan with four sides and a depth
@@sams-pg7hj Yeah we just always call them trays or sheets. And clearly by intent of the rules they meant a classic saucepan/frying pan/skillet/wok type arrangement
Aside from the Microwave obvious thing. Mike played the opening really well. Good ideas, throw a broad net and let others narrow the scope as they need.
Theory: for all his flapping, Mike is actually at his best when he gets to start off a dish, because he's not panicking about figuring out what someone else is done; he gets to pick and set up the direction, without the time spent racing around the kitchen trying to work out what's going on. It worked out well for him this episode!
Yes. Mike has good ideas but often gets in his own way and flaps because of low self-esteem, so letting him pick the direction is playing to his strength.
I think Ben's got the right attitude. They really should have the perspective of scoring themselves based on "lack of screwing up" rather than "creating the next magnum opus" xD
Man, Mike should go first more often... He really got them off to a solid start & set them up for success in this one! Even if he did somehow forget that you can heat milk in the microwave lol
Mike making an amazing start and underrating himself (Mate! That was an 8 EASILY) and then Barry doing basically nothing and giving himself a higher grade is just so classic.
Mike putting the marrow on top of the shrooms was actually one of the smartest things I've seen him do in one of these on-the-fly challenges. Also he killed it with the polenta, even though my original thought was not using the stove but I guess no pans so it was technically correct. Funny when Ben said the same thing lol.
I can't believe that Jamie didn't ruin the whole thing. I honestly couldn't stop bitting my lip because of the anxiety I had of him destroying everything for something else 😂. Glad Mike mentioned he should have scored himself more because of this 🤣
The intro to this format really hits home for me, taking me back to times with my mum, who's no longer with us. The intro music reminds me of lazy Sundays, her cooking dinner with shows like Antiques Roadshow, Songs of Praise, and Keeping Up Appearances playing in the background. It's a kind of warm, fuzzy feeling I've missed as an adult. Thanks for sparking those memories with your music choice.
Great job guys! This was an obvious pass. I'm always rooting for you to succeed. When Mike goes first, he does a great job of creating a direction without defining the dish too precisely. It's a bowl not a pan.
Mike's a better person than me, because when he mentioned for the first time "I haven't figured out a way to heat up milk. could be an issue", my mind instantly went the Barry-red-beets-route and thought "kettle"
When the clock is ticking, definitely go with what you know. One of the reasons the chefs are able to invent on the fly is they have a much broader experience to draw on.
Jamie deserved a higher score not just for the perfect brining to together of the parts, but I believe that his sauce is one of those thing that _really_ elevates a dish. He was adding another flavour layer to an already complex dish and made it work!
MAJORLY impressed by the lack of panic by Barry; he well deserves his red apron!!! And all the others (astonishingly) seemed to be on the same wavelength. BRAVO!!!
And I'm still unreasonably irritated that he doesn't take time to clear down. Walks into a cleared-down kitchen, and yet doesn't think to pass that on to the next guy. Unreasonable of me perhaps but then he is apparently the crowned/aproned sous chef
I was watching sorted videos the other day and thought to myself how good the plating and presentation of nearly all your dishes are, both normal and obviously chefs. Could you do a video offering some plating tips and tricks that chefs use that us normals could use at home?
Pass it on challenge: the cooks get assigned a cooking appliance and can only use that for their turn. One gets an air fryer, one gets a microwave, one gets a toaster, one gets a blow torch or something else. Not sure what appliances you keep on hand 😅
When can we remove the sous chef title from the salad cutter that is so proud of himself that he gives 7 (!!!) points? But I was sure that Barry either doing a quick pickle or something like that. Minimal effort like always.
I think all their scores deserve to be higher - Mike did SUCH a good job setting it up, Ebbers set Jaime up super well, and brought things together and Jaime plated something amazing, bringing all the different pieces together. Usually, I think Barry ignores the direction he's being nudged down and does his own thing (whether it's productive or not), but all 4 of them did a super good job working together.
I simply adore the usual pass it on chaos!Although it was non existent in this episode, I was impressed by Mike’s perfect set up that made it easy for the rest of the team to fall in line.
Mike used his time efficiently and prepared a solid base for a dish, which everyone reacted positively to. Baz didn't toss Mike's creation aside and created something complimentary, which Ebbers wasn't disgusted by. Ebbers didn't start with disgust for the previous creation and finished the dish in a relaxed mode, almost plated it, although he wasn't last. Jamie didn't add any bacon and actually finished on time. I don't know what's going on, but I'm positively surprised :D Jamie had nice Gordon Ramsey vibes here ;)
I loved this episode. But guys! You have the most expensive and capable waffle maker, you have an Instant Pot, you have a deep fryer, you have the dosa maker, you have the samosa maker, you have the precision oven, you have sous vide maker and you have that stupid breakfast all in one and probably other things. You have SO MUCH potential for variety! Please make another no pans allowed episode but use your gadgets!
The breakdown of roles ‘a base’ then ‘a flavour’ etc was really fun. Maybe try a challenge where that’s how you have to cook, like everyone building their own piece of the Lego set.
I started watching Sorted Food for the Pass it On series and it's still my favourite. But how Instagram was going crazy saying Mike is the most normal normal is beyond me 🙂 He has evidently improved by leaps. Another great episode!! 🥳
‘I have no way to heat the milk’, then proceeds to use a bowl on a hob to heat the polenta. Classic! Also, what does it say about me that I prefer the failed pass it ons? 😂
Brilliant job by the lads. Mike gave them a brilliant start Barry didn't change direction on them and instead made a salad that complimented the base Ebbers making the main component and texture components Jamie bringing it all together with great plating and a sauce.
Back yourself Mike that was a great start! 👏👏👏 One of the only PIOs i can remember where they actually progressed from what was already there! To keep it up how about a mezze pass it on where each person has to contribute a dish for the mezze but you can only leave clues (ingredients and equipment) for your suggested dish and the next person has to cook whatever they think you've got in mind. Then they leave out ingredients/equipment for their suggested dish which the next person cooks and so on...
Pretty much the whole time Ben was cooking my mind was like "this is looking way to good, Jamie will throw half of it away to make it the usual spectacle-failure". And then it just worked out. Refreshing change in the series and good job Jamie.
Mike needs a sous chef apron. The impeccable work he did in the kitchen was just *chefs kiss*! He also was able to clean as he worked. Baz apron should say, "Pretentious Sous Chef"
Maybe they should do this order more often - it was so satisfying watching everything come together. Also I agree with everyone - the boys need to score themselves higher when they actually hold back and don't completely derail the dish by trying to make something completely new in 10 minutes!
"Is it better when it doesn't work?" Personally ... nope. I've been watching this channel for years now trying to learn how to cook. My skills have progressed leaps and bounds thanks to your videos. It's quite nice to see things work, because by this point, they kinda should? Otherwise it sort of invalidates a lot of the teaching that has been provided over the years. There's a fine balance between 'keeping things relevant' to the viewers, and 'keeping things fun and entertaining', which I am sure is a VERY hard line to walk, but having these sorts of things *typically* fail is a great disservice to all of the wonderful cooking / kitchen lessons that can be gained by watching this channel.
