My father got me into fish keeping when I was a child. The way he showed me was to set the aquarium up with a layer of soil out of the garden and then about half an inch of gravel on top of the soil. And you know what, the plants always grew rampantly. And this is the way I’ve continued to do my aquariums throughout the years. From my experience with this, I’ve eluded that tanks don’t need all this tech like CO2 etc.

I set a thing up in a drinking glass - just big enough to hold a can of coke. Put inch of aquasoil with bit of root tab, and planted some sprigs of Elodea Densa I found in local pond. Just put in the window and changed 1/3 of water each day and it is growing fine. Even has a little snail that snuck in on plant. Its been up for about 6 weeks now and no algae issues

I love small builds like this. My most successful planted "tank" when I first started out in the hobby was a 250ml glass bottle with rotala in it. It sat by the window and I barely ever touched it. It was dirted and I had to trim every 3 weeks. Really helped me with my bigger tank where I just scaled up the bottle. It even supported what I think was a bunch of Daphnia. They ate algae that grew on the sand cap and had a self regulated population. Never dosed it or put food in.

Quite a while ago I emptied my community tank (just wanted a change) and returned all my platies. After a few days I went to drain the rest and rebuild and I spotted a tiny fry. So he lived in a planted vase for a good few months. His name is Lucky, he has platie friends again now and a planted 90L to swim and play in. Have to say though I absolutely loved when he was in the vase cause he was so small and I got to watch him grow up. ❤

MD absolutely killing it again 👍 Showing how easy it is to create a tiny environment which provides interest at utterly minimum cost. I have done the same with only a little bit of sand and gravel sifted out of my local stream.. and a handful of the plants along with the snails, etc (so the beneficial bacteria is already there in the sabstrate and plants)... Total cost: £2 for the vase from a local charity shop... And this setup gives me just as much enjoyment as the 3 established aquariums I have already have at home (maybe even more?).
@Greensky02
@Greensky02 5 месяцев назад
Now I must find a local stream! I honestly don't want to buy 3 bags of different substrate and only use 1/10th of each bag for this project.
@Paul-li9hq
@Paul-li9hq 5 месяцев назад
@Greensky02 do it! I repeated the entire process with a 60litre aquarium. I pan-netted out a handful of small fish from the brook: Minnows, sticklebacks, bullheads, stone loaches, gudgeon, tiny perch, etc. I kept the minnows and gudgeon as they adapted incredibly well to an indoor unheated aquarium and readily accepted standard fish flake food: I quickly released the rest back into the stream, as the tank conditions were not optimal for them and/or feeding had to be live food. Minnows are actually delightfully attractive and interesting little fish which school very tightly, and gudgeon have quite an impressive multicolored iridescence to them once settled in.

My dad had a fishtank and I never saw him change the water in the tank or clean the tank. Besides the tropical fish and the plants, he had snails in them and some sort of tiny eal on the bottom. He said that the eal kept the floor clean. You only noticed the snails when the glass started to become green. Suddenly the entire snail population was on the glass. Few days later, the glass was extremely clean again.

another great plant to use in boggy settups or even like this with the roots and base completly in the water is: Sagittaria sagittifolia. This one also gets white flowers. A plant i had in my pond and it is a very easy plant to grow. Or some Irises can work very wel in a setup like this. Plus the irises are very good to keep your water quality high :)

Very good I have had several very similar vases with the time. They can be very biologically stable. I mainly feed them with poached stinging nettle leaves and sometimes tiny crumbles of cooked sea food. Though one thing I think is a bit risky in what you did and that is the amount of snails you directly added. I have made bad experiences with this; though the probability of the snails dying out in the tank is almost 0, it can lead to initial fatalities, especially if some of the Planorbella snails are very large. They need more "grazing space" then one might exspect and new tanks tend to be quite clean. So I would recommend viewers to stock less snails.

Neon Tetra apparently should be in schools of 6 or more and they like a LOT more room than a vase will allow. I'm sure they make it look great but I can't imagine they'll live long in there.

@@batkat0 Really the only thing you should probably keep in a space that small are snails and shrimp. I did break that rule though with some tiny non-grouping fish that the shop had mixed into the same tank as the shrimp and snails. They seem to be doing well enough in a small environment. This is very useful. I’ve been wanting shrimp so bad for years. I’ve bought probably 3 dozen in the last year, but all were lost for unknown reasons. But recently, I caught my betta in the act. It was killing my shrimp. It is a male and somewhat aggressive, but the female I had before him never went after shrimp so I thought they’d be okay. I considered returning the betta, as I live in an apartment and can’t have tons of different tanks for different animals, and I wanted shrimp more than him LOL but this vase seems like a great workaround. I’ve already got tons of live plants prepared. I did have some live substrate but I don’t think it’s enough for this tank. My current tank is a real hassle to clean, it’ll be relieving to have such a small simple system to maintain.

Thanks for the inspiration! I just started this project! I went to Ikea specifically to acquire this vase and make this project happen. I found some white pebbles there as well for substrate, some tiny plastic plant decorations for the bottom and I also purchased a Pothos plant as I hear they work well for filtration and you don't even need to plant them in dirt, you just stick some clippings right into the water and let the roots grow out! I've set it all up and the only thing I really need is the aquatic life now! Not too sure if I can host snails in mine though as I only used the pebbles for substrate. I'll inquire about that.

3:50 The reason to put a few inches of sand is to create a low oxygen environment in the substrate; as the bacteria responsible for denitrification (Nitrate to N2) are anaerobic, meaning they need a very low oxygen environment to thrive. The sand helps create an area that is suitable for this to occur efficiently.

Thank you for talking about snails. I got an aquarium just a few days ago. I bought it second hand and the previous owner gave me a lot of things to use that she no longer needed, including a lot of substrate that had been used for about a year, and in that, some snails. I wasn't sure about what to do with those, and at the moment I've just thrown every plants and such down in the aquarium so that they will survive until the weekend when I have time to really put things together properly. But yeah.. I think that the snails will stay, if they're not way to many. I have to count them.

These are all so cool! Do you have a 1 year follow-up and what to expect in that year regarding cleaning, maintenance activities, etc?

Looks beautiful! Snails are awesome..I have a 15ltr just for my two apple snails:) The shrimp look great against the bright green plants you've added. Off topic: I recently was given a baby blue crayfish. Made her a separate 30ltr with foam filter gravel, allodia densa ( which she leaves alone) water perfect! Put in a bit of driftwood from local shop. Soaking in in boiling water etc etc. It's been in about a week. Checked water today..ph dropped, ammonia up. Nitrate up! I've now removed it and done a 50% water change. Also added an Aqua Ball to help bacteria. Have you ever experienced driftwood doing this?! My snail tank never needs water change. Also has Elodea Densa plant and the same foam filter system. ❤️ the videos btw

General question: Can bacteria establish in the ground if you "lock it down" with the fine sand? (I come from 20 years ago, no soil, and the teaching was "you can use sand or fine gravel, however, MAKE SURE it's all the same size so no detritus can sink between the grains and produce foul spots". It was also encouraged to use ground-dwelling snails who would act like earthworms and turn everything over) I know that bacteria will also establish on the plants and leaf litter, but I'm not so sure about the ground. That's my question, then :)

Should we do the top-ups with distilled water? To make sure that we don’t have too many minerals as a result of evaporation? Or it’s not an issue? Also, won’t the shrimp just jump out if you have such a small tank without a top?

As usual MD, you have created a beautiful ecosystem that will give anyone a gift of beauty who see it! A question: at 12:15 you are mentioning snails and show a bigger tank with clown killifish (I believe). Since these fish are notorious jumpers, how do you keep them from jumping in a open tank? Thanks so much for this video! ❤
