Calling anime style open world games "Genshin killer" is like calling Saints Row games "GTA killer", see how that one turned out
@YourMomsAltAccount
@YourMomsAltAccount 8 месяцев назад
I think that's an incredibly silly comparison, especially if you know the history of the developers of Saints Row and what lead up to the death of the Saints Row Franchise. In the past, Saints Row was a beloved contender, rival, and even "killer" to GTA, and the fall of SaintsRow isn't at all linked to a failure to compete with GTA, as had Deep Silver not had control over Volition then the series would have continued to thrive as it had till that tipping point. Deep Silver did the exact same sort of cooperate things to Volition that Take Two Interactive does currently to RockStar. I firmly believe that RockStar is destined to meet the exact same fate, and the only thing that's kept them floating despite the many atrocious decisions made by Take Two is the talented folks at RockStar that have been able to continue developing great games despite the weight on their shoulders. I believe that GTA6 might end up being a nail in the coffin for RockStar, although I certainly believe it depends on when exactly GTA6 began development. Volition had the equally same talent, heart and passion as RockStar, but that only got them so far, nothing they could do could prolong the damage that Deep Silver was inflicting on the Saints Franchise and the developers, and overtime the passion, love and talent disappeared under the pressure and abuse of corporate greed. If things continue, Take Two WILL cause the fall of RockStar, it's already been in motion for a long time now.

The standard reaction to the first few hours in Genshin is invariably "Wait... This game is actually good. I wasn't expecting that". It's a bit of an unsolvable conundrum. The game is so engaging that you end up lamenting the fact that it's a Gacha game (i.e: you're missing part of it if you're not whaling). But at the same time, you have to acknowledge that the game's unparalleled production value is supported by... the gacha.

Fun you play once, never touched it again, you don't feel the need, but you had fun. The hard truth kids is that people playing those games don't know what is to have fun. They will say they know of course, it doesn't make it true, like asking a drug addict about stopping, they'll find some excuses, not knowing that they are trapped in the addiction. @leed1337
@leed1337 8 месяцев назад
There will never be a "genshin killer", people who play Genshin are too far gone into the game, they probably invested thousands of dollars and deeply invested into the lore and characters to care about a new game. Honkai is an exception, because the game made by the same company, and people who play HOYO games are very loyal to everything they make.

apparently every game with a gacha system or anime style is a genshin rival. counter strike is a genshin killer it has lootboxes!
@Warfoki
@Warfoki 8 месяцев назад
@@leed1337 Also there's the fact that no other game of this type can even hope to compete with Genshin's quality and content flow, since to keep all that up, Genshin eats 300+ million dollars of development cost a year, which they can afford no problem, since the game makes billions a year. No freshly developed new game is going to get backing from any major publisher on this tune, it's way too risky. So, you know, if someone wants to play a game of this type, Genshin will be the best option.
@pontoancora
@pontoancora 8 месяцев назад
@@leed1337I don't know if that was your intention, but your comment implies that there are some huge amount of loyal players and the game thrives because of them. There's no gacha game with more monthly influx of new players than genshin. Even star rail, just after its launch, was getting less new players than genshin. I think more than a loyal, and invested players base, their secret to keep being big is that they get tons of new players every month.

Seeing Dragalia Lost even being referenced is saddening. That game had the most potential because instead of just collecting game art, you collected chibi player controlled ARPG characters that you would do raid battles and boss hunts. The game director did not want to alienate both the young players who couldn't afford gacha and the veteran players while also delivering on every occasion what he promised... all while choosing to not monetize the new systems he put in place. The game was so consumer friendly, after the first year, I never had to pay for any character ever (granted I paid like 300 dollars the first year for literally every character and dragon you could get). The game also did not try to capitalize on sexualization, nor did it have those cringey bullshit advertisements you had seen plastered everywhere. The only place it was every showcased was on the official Nintendo Mobile channel, and even then, it was never the forefront because Nintendo liked to play favoritism to Fire Emblem. The artist for the game was the guy who got his channel taken down by Google a couple months back, and his artwork alongside the comic artist for the game (the artist who does Hololive ID's Anya Melfissa"s art) were so charming and wholesome.

I dropped DL way before it went offline. The main issue was the game just felt unrewarding and the power creep was insane. Like, sure, you got an insane amount of freebies, but like... you pulled a new character that the tierlists put on S tier. You spent the better part of a month to max them out, be happy that you have a top tier, say, main DPS... and then, barely a month after this character was out, a new one came that dumpstered him entirely. Getting new characters felt utterly meaningless, since I knew that by the time I minmax them, they will be powercrept to oblivion. And in a gacha game, if you stopped caring about getting new characters, it's only a matter of time before the repetitive grind becomes too much to deal with.

So why not embrace the problems, open the floodgate for everyone, and get a good PR for it? As someone who plays FGO, I personally don't think it's a "bad game". Sure if it's not your cup of tea then it's just not your cup of tea. One thing I'm curious about though is: How do you define a "pay to win" game? Because I've heard that term be used too often over the years that I've started to think that it's a term that is used loosely nowadays. I dont consider Genshin to be a "pay to win" type of game became you don't actually have to pay a single cent to play it and experience the entire world of Teyvat and all that comes with it. When I think of an example of a "pay to win" game I immediately think of things like Destiny 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Halo 5, etc.
@megalodon2831
@megalodon2831 8 месяцев назад
People like to generalize everything, if the game have any sort of monetization, even if its only cosmetics, they will call it pay to win, now for the actual pay to win concept, games that give tremendous buffs or advantage to people that put money in them, operation 7 was a good example, because people were able to buy certain types of bullets, that do more damage, only with real money. Also your example about genshin I think would be better described as a paywall since you have no competition in genshin, also you could say is pay to win faster, which is another concept in games that people don't use that much but describes other games with monetization other than cosmetics, because you pay to get the amount of resources you would get in 2 months to have them in a week. Yes you may feel like you are lagging behind the rest of the people, but you will eventually get there which is usually the important thing.
@Haruka_May
@Haruka_May 8 месяцев назад
They're doing a good job at normalizing monetizing "power you don't need" just like cosmetics are outfits you don't need. They sell power at a premium but as long as you can clear content with what you have that's good enough. The only thing you're wasting is your time/life.
@KingJerbear
@KingJerbear 7 месяцев назад
The most general way people look at "pay-to-win" is that if you can spend real money to gain an advantage in-game, then it is indeed pay-to-win. Obviously everyone's idea of where the line is drawn varies slightly, but if someone can spend $5k and get a bunch of C6 characters on Genshin, they will inevitably have a more powerful roster then someone who didn't spend any money... even if they aren't actually competing against each other in like a PvP sense.

To be fair, Genshin's made the perfect formula to earning millions. The cycle of money is just perfect, the whales spend, and that money is being put back into the production value of the game. You could have better combat, but everything else will probably end up suffering. Despite it being a Chinese mobile gacha game, I'm still surprised by the amount of passion put into it. And the only people who will tell you that it's otherwise, are people who either have never played Genshin, people who are chronically on Genshin, or people who got a taste for it and wasnt their type of game. The improvement and active adjustment of overall game design throughout the exploration, throughout the questing, all of it has seen tremendous improvements over the years. It's actually astonishing how much the feedback in the surveys ends up reaching the game. The only exception being quality of life features which were funneled into Star Rail instead, because of it being their new game. Though now it's steadily making its way into Genshin.

Okay. This might be a long one. Bear with me. 1) I agreed with most of what Asmon said but this will be the first time I will have to disagree a bit with his take regarding _"Wuthering Waves."_ The game was in Beta, it wasn't finished. Sure a lot of stuff wasn't introduced yet, the characters weren't voiced fully etc. but calling it outright 'Garbage' is a bit of an understatement. Also, the 'Depressing vibe' is the main theme of a post-apocalyptic world. Knowing PGR (Punishing Gray Ravens) that game is built on depression. So it fits quite well with where they are going. The Beta looked 'Stale' but not garbage. No, No. Absolutely false. 2) Regarding the bosses. I remember clearly as day when Asmon played the beta and fought _'The Crownless'_ boss and he lost to it. It was a tutorial boss because he couldn't Parry correctly. It looked like a skill issue to me. :-D It could be challenging but I wouldn't say it's impossible. Also, this game has a high focus on Combat. Those who have played PGR will know. The game is not for pussy. Overall, I mostly agree with the rest. WW won't kill Genshin but a good competition for sure. I feel that WW will take a niche place between Tryhards and Casuals while Genshin is catered for mostly casuals. P.S. Project Mugen vs WW? Nah dawg, that's bullshit.

Honestly, I kind of don't want Asmon to play Genshin, because I feel like he won't really appreciate the story in its sadder moments. I think we can agree that all Asmon wants to see is big titty girls or badass moments. And while Genshin does have its badass moments, Sumeru's and especially Fontaine's stories are a lot more melancholy than awesome. After rewatching 4.2 cinematics I almost cried, because it really is a good and heartfelt story. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Asmon wouldn't get much of a reaction from Fontaine.

Except the horribly paced non voice acting dragged out world quest that make you want to put a bullet through your brain and some horrendous side quest that are non fullfilling boring and a waste of time for the 60 primos. These also happen in some archon quest like inazuma and a lot of sumeru fontaine fixed alot of this which im happy for but the game has a lot of story telling issues when its outside the archon quest which can be annoying because i really enjoy the story and want to digest it in a way that feels fun and good because a lot of the quest in this game are filler dialogue outside of that though Sumeru and fontaine quest have been really amazing when theres no dialogue bloat.

The term "Genshin Killer" appeared when ToF marketing decided to call itself that. And everyone who seem to think that going against mainstream is cool now uses that term as a throw in to every Open World Anime game, which is insulting to both Genshin and the game they are using the term in.

"X killer" is not a new marketing ploy by any stretch. Every late 90s, early 2000s FPS was a doom killer. Ever major ARPG release for abut 20 years was a Diablo killer. MMOs? WOW killer. MOBAs? PGR even release a PC version but still didnt beat genshin. because genshin always deliver quality game with consistent patch, has consistent livestream for patch update gathering 60-100k viewers on twitch, having real life events and so on. no other gacha can beat that kind of quality hoyo delivers.

@@StephCruz-kb1ez I used to play PGR, Arknights, Alchemy Stars, Nikke... they all have the exact same problem in the long run: monotone grind. DO the same exact content over and over, every single day, every single week, no exception, for absolutely miniscule power upgrades each time. And you have to do it, because if you don't, you will fall behind and won't be able to enjoy new content. And it doesn't matter how fun this gameplay was at first, if you have to do it every day with no shakeup whatsoever, so that for every 10 hours of soulless grinding you can get 10 minutes of fun story, it's only a matter of time before you go "nah, I had enough of this bs". Genshin got away form this, since the grind takes very little time in comparison to all of those above, and there's always something else to do to break the monotony: exploration, minigame event, new character story, etc.

I still play Genshin and if you could say that to Wuthering Waves, then you'll definitely burn-out fast in Genshin. I'm only sticking with Genshin for the story and lore. But at this point I treat it more like a playable anime than an action game. Challenge is literally 30 mins a month with every dprial abyss resets and some events. The only problem I currently see with WW is their similar systems and mechanics with Genshin. I have no glaring issue with the art direction and character designs. Also, art direction is so subjective. I for one prefer the dark and gloomy tone and the yoji shinkawa tech wear minimalist character designs than the ubiquitous colorful designs of literally all of gacha games. It's like saying Souls games slare trash because they're all gooomy and dark. If you play a lot of gacha, you'll be bombarded by similar colorful art style and character designs. That's why characters from HI3, HSR, Aether Gazer, ToF, Higan could all fit in a single game universe exactly because their designs are so similar to each other. That is colorful and busy. Meanwhile, the likes of PGR and WW, maybe even some characters from Path to nowhere and arknights will stand out ironically because they are brave enough to go minimalist a la nier or MGS. From the looks of it, Asmon prefers the safer approach catered for the majority of consumers, that is bright and saturated colorful designs. Even color theory "proves" that. Being said, Punishing Gray Raven is all I need. Wuthering Waves being successful will just be very welcome extra. 😂

the thing is - harder content =/ improvement, necessarily, especially not in the ways sweaty tryhards ask for, which is something they do not understand in most cases, especially since one of the camps is CLEARLY bigger than the other. Sure, there's some qol stuff even i want, but most of it is small stuff that doesnt really need to be resolved fast. You know what's the good way they implemented hard content? Regional Legends like Ninianne and Vivianne in Fontaine. now these are fun to tackle, at your own pace, no timers. And if they dislike that... play another gacha game either together, or instead of genshin. Gacha games arent exactly the type of game where you no-life one of them from dawn to dusk, and genshin is not an exception to that rule, its ok to play multiple, but i understand not everybody is vibin' with that. and people really, seriously need to stop to listening to clowns like tectone. he was playing worse than f2p players in genshin even with all his whaling, that alone says a lot about him.

It struck gold when everyone was looking for something to do and something to spend money on while stuck inside. And then Hoyoverse MASSIVELY re-invested that into the game and the music and the VAs, sparing no expense to drive out the best game the Unity engine can even support. And they put it all on a CRAZY release schedule. We're talking 4-6 weeks between major patches with new characters, new regions, new puzzles, new events, new quests, new music. I really can't understate how insanely productive Hoyoverse has been to keep up with that schedule, but it's certainly helped with their popularity by always releasing something new and exciting.
