No Title - Lost Title - No Problem! How to get a NEW TITLE at DMV / SOS - PopUp Camper Restoration 

Thank you! Yeah I figured it was about time someone posted the process. I got lucky and had a nice lady at the DMV/Secretary of State explain how to make magic happen. Only risk you get into is the possibility of reported theft. So really that’s the only risk. An extra bonus tip. I got a free boat trailer with no title or even a VIN on it, and those you just have to get weighed at a weigh station which some gas stations have and get an official weight slip and boom they will make you a new VIN and get you on the road. Almost the same thing with a boat except you don’t even need to weigh it and you don’t even need a Hull ID they just make em on smaller craft. I forgot the length you can do this up to but mine is 10’ fiberglass Livingston without a motor and it was no problem. So word to the wise don’t pass up free stuff! If your into restorations.

@@chrisshirak347 a bill of sale helps yes. Just get the persons name, address, signature with date. How much money you paid for it. If you can find a VIN that makes it easier bc they will do a background search. If no VIN then you will need to get it weighed

You are right. New canvas top is like $1200 bucks! So if you check my other videos I converted it into a hardside camper using 3/4 ply board. I am not sure what it’s worth now but it’s pretty nice now and I am going camping this summer. Stay tuned too for new videos.

I had this happen on another trailer. They can basically assign you an ID number I believe. Or if you have any ID number on it they might try using that as well. It’s basically the same as registering a newly made trailer I think.

If the VIN is just painted over you can carefully use a weak acetone or nail polish remover on it. Rub with with the remover wipe off with clean towel and water. Slowly remove layer by layer. If you do too much fast it might destroy the VIN also I am not sure but I thought most VINs are somewhat stamped and printed. You might be able to use a piece of paper and a crayon to get a rubbing off the relief. This isn’t the first time this has happened with others for sure. I also recommend talking to a few people at your local DMV for advice.

@@Jeep-Creep Great idea I will try to catch out a Vin number I don’t know it might be too damaged but I keep trying to call my DMV here and I just cannot get through they’ve got me on hold for like two hours today I’ll have to go down there I guess

I live in Michigan, not sure if some states are more lenient than others. I will tell you this though it’s also the person helping you. Sometimes you get someone that isn’t as knowledgeable. I tried this once with no luck, tried a different location with different person and they were most helpful and guided me on this much better. One thing I can promise, lost titles are not that rare, it happens for many reasons. There has to be some way to make it happen in your state. I would try searching a ton on google for Maryland with lost title. If it came down to it I know things like that probably can be figured out in court or some sort of lawyer, but that’s pretty extreme, I am sure there is an easier way. Property does not go into permanent limbo, someone owns it, or it one way or another gets transferred to another.

Go down to your DMV. There is a form that they have and you best explain your situation of how you acquired the camper. Provide them with a VIN which should be stamped somewhere on the camper. As long as it’s not reported stolen and you have a receipt from whom you acquired it from you should be good to go with that form.

I have to believe this is similar as Michigan. Head to your local DMV office, explain your situation. I am sure they will have a similar form and process that Michigan has... Once you find some info, please post them on here to share with others. Thank you :)

You can go that route as well. Lots of RU-vidrs do that. I considered a frame up rebuild. However I am one of the few that have a custom trailer for just over $300 bucks. Yes I have more into it but extra amenities were not necessary. I know guys that go out and spend easily $1,000 just on siding. Then insulation. Special aluminum roofs etc. My goal was to build something as cheap as possible while building a stronger than factory camper.
