It's insane this video is only 7 days of progress over at the new house! I am getting so excited and eager to start on the design process however we still have some work to be done. We broke wall, tried multiple vintage chandeliers in the living space and found the perfect thrifted vanity. Now to decide if I should get the floors refinished throughout the home. I'm leaning Yes so they have a cohesive and refreshed look throughout. What do you think?

I love that you’re doing your renovations in keeping with the style of the home. I cringe and die a little inside when I see people stripping out the integrity and rich history of an old home to replace it with style elements of a bland new build. Restoring an old home properly is like a historic preservation and a fine art restoration with a sprinkle of neurosurgical precision. There is so much thought, research, strategic planning, and patient sourcing that goes into the process and I love that you’re taking us along for the ride. It is such a long, arduous, and expensive process that not many of these old homes are ever restored properly. Thank you for saving this beauty. Have you researched the home’s history (from the architect to the builder, and from the original owner to the people you bought it from)? It can be so helpful in uncovering even more of the hidden secrets your home holds.

I feel like adding modern touches just makes sense even if you are restoring a home (usually electrical stuff). But I agree for the most part. Why but a character home if you are going to strip it if it’s charm and originality.

now THIS is what a great designer does. a designer designs and adapts to the theme that is already laid out and develops it further. in this case, drew based all his design and decor elements to the original theme of the house which is its spanish roots. unlike other "designers" that are only capable of sticking to one style and just basically copy-pasting it to every single place they design in, doesn't matter whether their house has a theme already or not. i am beyond happy to see drew maintaining the spanish theme. i was a bit nervous at first upon clicking this video thinking it would be like the others, purchasing a history-rich house but turning it into a modern/ contemporary theme. this is amazing drew. keep up the good work!

The thrift store he was shopping discounts things that have been there a while. It's a common practice in Goodwill, etc. When something comes in it gets a colored tag (different colors each week), and after after a while they apply a discount. Drew said something about that "blue tags" were 50% off. So his taking his time to decide ended up saving him some money.

just a little demo/reno tip: did you notice how the big arch wall that they cut into is made from drywall? This means that the wall is recent because in the original era (through 1960s, most houses used lath and plaster walls). Also this would have originally had 'knob and tube' wiring, and the newly opened wall shows recent wiring. In the future, ask if it's drywall and recent wiring or original lath and plaster, since that can affect the demo process, along with the rebuild mod you want. When possible, have them upgrade all original wiring they expose so your electrical will become safer, plus it's a good time to add plugs where needed. p.s. that archway you made into the stairwell landing is a new wall, and it's possible the the original home did have a door there for that downstairs apt, especially since the floor matches up easily.

You have a good eagle eye. All the exterior walls and all the area above the fireplaces in that house are made of cement with lath then plastered over. That was a very common way to build pre war Spanish and Tudor revival homes. And it's what makes them an astronomically expensive nightmare to renovate. Plus all the old plumbing is lead pipes. It's going to cost at least a million to renovate it.

In my home I had the opposite. Arches installed in the 50’s that DID NOT belong. So I had square cased openings and French doors reinstalled. Taking my 1870’s lady back to her original beauty. I think homes thank us when we restore them. I love that your “delay” on the buffet/vanity became a big discount. Sounds like the universe thanked you. 😊❤️

You are smart to listen to subscriber advice then make your own informed decision. 😊👍 I hope you swap out the chandeliers you're not crazy about for the ones you find that you 💕. Love the new larger chandelier you picked! I'd sell the expensive crystal one in your bedroom. It will pay for the others you buy. I've been watching ever since the video of you showing your landlord all of the upgrades you did to his property. I've been impressed with your make it and take it style, meaning make it yours and take it when you go, all without compromising the original. The lighting video so far has been my very favorite until today. I was left speechless when you showed the buffet at the store. I have the matching dresser and chiffarobe... exactly the same style, design, wood finish, everything! When you get a chance, you should visit the Santa Barbara City Hall. It is considered an architectural gem, same era as your home, Spanish Revival. The building is all original and absolutely gorgeous to walk through. Many, many homes in SB are built in this time period and architecture. Also, visit the Santa Barbara Mission, you will see many period pieces that will give you more ideas. I’m loving this series. This type of home and Arts and Crafts ( California bungalow) are my 2 favorite architectural designs. Excited to see your work in progress!

Oh, my gosh! The buffet you bought for a bathroom vanity matches a set I was gifted years ago when I was single, teaching 4th grade and just purchased my first little home!!! A china cupboard, buffet, table and five chairs! They were GIFTED to me (I was at least the 3rd recipient) with the stipulation that if I ever tired of them that I passed them on to another needy soul!!! A tip with picking wall colors…..in each room the color value shows differently due to natural light coming in from the windows. When decorating homes, I use large poster boards and paint each in different colors. Once dried, you can use painters tape and tape each swatch on the wall, move the swatch to different rooms etc to determine if you like it.

Drew, now that I’ve actually watched the video a couple things: That last LR chandelier took my breath away!! YES. It is definitely the winner. The smaller one with the amaranth leaves that match your sconces - WOW - what a great find and so perfect. But the piece de resistance is that buffet for HALF OFF!!!! It was perfect at $399 but $199 is so exciting. Thank you for sharing the process with us. I love your energy, excitement, and style.

Every WI farmer's wife wanted one of these buffets in their dining room. My grandmother had one for many years. That would be the 1930s. Not the finest wood or workmanship but the height of style for your dinning room. Your purchase held much memories. Oh Boy ! This vlog had lots of action, suspense and moments of pure magic. First we just jump in to demo 😯 and creating arches- MAGIC ! They all look original to house! And The lovely magical moment when Drew finds the antique buffet is still at thrift shop and on SALE !? 😀BUT have to say CAUTION🖐 too much buying stuff BEFORE you're actually in the house is mistake . IF you do feel you have to have something- ask if you can take home to see if it works -- with OPTION TO RETURN FOR FULL REFUND. This is normal business for interior designers .If you work with a few shops regularly they may okay you taking it home for a day or two w/o a fuss. Dahling - you really have to start a SPREAD SHEET of your purchases, store, receipt ( scanned) and deadline to return. 👍
