For his first large concert, it wasn't well known among fans that Charley (correct spelling by the way) was black. He began by saying "Friends, I realize it's a little unique, me coming out here - with a permanent suntan - to sing country and western to you. But that's the way it is."
Yep just to add that Charley Pride was the first black musician ever inducted into the 'Country Music Hall of Fame' and also he was the first solo black man to sing the Super Bowl National Anthem (Super Bowl VIII 1974) :)
Charlie Pride was TRULY one of the all-time greats. He's directly responsible in some measure for making country music (and music in general) what it is today.
The chorus of this song was written by Bob Dylan in 1973 and was never released as an official recording. Decades later, Ketch Secor from Old Crow Medicine Show wrote the verses; it was released on their first album. It's a song with a neat history.
During my bar days, this song always gained that same reaction. If folks danced, they hit the floor. And whether or not you could sing, you sang every line.
That's why his pillow in the video he had a University of South Carolina logo, Hootie and the Blowfish started when the band members were students there.
And the Camo boots at the beginning is Duck Dynasty the 1st guy to pick him up Sal Roberts. Then Willie Roberts his wife and daughter pick him up. Then Lady A picks him up. Guy at the bar is Jess Roberts.
Robertson is their last name. Si is the first driver, Willie, Korie, and Sadie are second. Jase is the guy in the bar. Gotta laugh whenever I see this video. They are from the my hometown, too.

The night I met my husband, he sang “I only wanna be with you,” by Hootie to me. It’s been our song for almost 20 years, until he heard this song. Now I get serenaded by both genres of Darius. Great song! “I only wanna be you” is another great song. His voice is amazing! Just sayin’.
I loved Darius as Hootie. Some of my friends laughed at me and said I was lame. I didn't care I knew he was amazing. Fast forward about 20 years and I'm listening to a country station and I immediately recognize the voice.. I yelled out loud Hootie!! He is one of the most played Country singers now. I love it.. Who's laughing now.. 💙
@@BruteStrength99 What are you talking about? Darius Rucker IS/was Hootie.. As a matter of fact they are on tour right now.. A reunion tour.. Google is such an amazing thing..
Thank you all for your lovely comments and support towards me. I will continue bringing you all the best . I am very grateful 🙏to have you as a fan that cares ...... Feel free to send me a message on my email I promise to reply back .....
This is a cover song. The original is by a band called “Old Crow Medicine Show”. Rucker was the front man for a very popular 90s pop rock band called “Hootie and the Blowfish”
This song was started by Bob Dylan and finished by Old Crow Medicine Show. Both are worth your time! Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” makes me hug my kids and tear up...such an amazing vibe!
Motel in Memphis and Big Time in the Jungle are a couple of my favorite OCMS songs. A lot of really powerful songs with interesting melodies from them.
The root of "originally" is "origin" so in the true sense of the word, originally he was in the Wolf Brothers, which eventually expanded and became Hootie and the Blowfish.
HOO-TAY..and the Blowfish, Yall do know his career started in mainstream rock first right?..Back in the early 90s late 80s, Nobody as of late has been able to pull the music transition this man has...plus he is one of the best song writers period in the aspect of writing hits
I'm from Roanoke so this song has a special place in my heart. And also it's a perfect country song. They play it at the Virginia Tech games and we all go nuts. I simply couldn't trust someone if they didn't like this song.
Whether it's Old Crow Medicine Show or Darius Rucker doing this song it is near impossible to not sing along with this song. Both do it great. The song just pulls you in.
There are a ton of cameos in this video from the Duck Dynasty guys to Lady Antebellum and the Old Crow Medicine Show band who originally made this song a hit!
Ray Charles was told by his management that if he did a country music album it would ruin his career. Ray said it was the total opposite and sold millions!
Technically, a Bob Dylan song--though he only wrote the chorus way back in 1973 and could never figure out the rest so he let another band (Old Crow Medicine Show) finish it around 2005.
When you lock yourself into one type of Genre then you rob yourself of Music, period! Nice to see your expanding. I listen to everything, that way I'm never alienated.
You’ve definitely got to do some Hootie and The Blowfish, too! Darius met his bandmates while attending University of South Carolina, and they officially formed in 1986. It’s a pop-folk-rock, anchored in Darius’ voice and too notch musicianship. Darius made the move to country over 10 years ago. BTW, can’t tell from names. My best man at 2nd wedding is named Darius, and he is Hispanic. 😉
Darius is one of the best story tellers in music. He went country but his style stayed the same he tells you story in the music that you can picture in your mind.
Check out Darius Rucker way back when he was with Hootie and the Blowfish. They had some great tunes...,"Let Her Cry" and "Only Want To Be With You". Great stuff.
It did not take him long to transition from Hootie & The Blowfish, which at the time was considered alternative rock, to doing country music as a solo artist. Hoody & The Blowfish themselves were very successful.
Darius has admitted he grew up listening to country, so this was kind of a home coming. I would love to hear him work with Alison krauss . please try her " when you say nothing at". She has such an ethereal voice.
So true, but I like some voices just go better with the effortless etheral sound. Robert said he learned more from singing with her about breath control that helped
Charlie Pride. He was the first mainstream black country western singer. And there are several NHL players of color - not the majority, but they're there. Look both up. And Hootie and the Blowfish were the ×*%÷ in the 90s.
I love seeing Amber mouth the words rocking back and forth and seeing Jay enjoying the song. Jay, you have come a long way and found out there is a lot of good music from many different genres.
Thanks so much for your lovely support and encouragement towards me. I'm highly appreciated to have you as a supportive and understanding fan that cares so much You are indeed amazing and wonderful. I'm very grateful and thankful.
@@dariusrucker1349 If you are the real Darius, I've been a fan of your since Hootie and the Blowfish. I love your country music. Radio and Forever Road are my favorites. Radio takes me back to my teenage years. Blasting music in the car with friends.
Love Darius Rucker's songs. When I first heard him with Hootie and the Blowfish, I thought he could fit in with the country music genre. Another interesting black country artist is Jimmie Allen.
I know, when I first heard this song, I was like is that Hootie? I love Darius Rucker, that man has some real natural talent! I love that guy, he always makes me smiile!
Rockin reaction, Don't feel bad dude...I envy you in a way, getting to enjoy this and all the great music you have reacted to for the first time and doing it with your gal,who by the way is a real star and the two of you are blowing up, congrats.
You guys MUST do Daryl Hall(Hall and Oates) with Darius Rucker doing You Lost That Loving Feeling from Live From Daryl's House. It's the best version of that song EVER!!!
Black Country singers Charlie pride - Kiss an angle good morning Darius Rucker- It won't be like this for long Kane brown- used to love you sober and many more
The mix with Duck Dynasty just makes it all that much better. This was "our song" 2013. Used to request this on band night at the Cat House (bar) in Eureka Springs Arkansas. Fun dancing! Miss that time.
Great reaction!! Was kinda waiting to see if you'd notice the Duck Dynasty crew in there. Also, the Country group Lady Antebellum was in the video as well! (just some fun facts and Lady Antebellum is another group to consider doing for some Country reactions!) But I'm so glad to see you loved this!! Keep going with Darius. Do both his solo country stuff and some of his stuff with his Rock group Hootie and the Blowfish.... You can't go wrong with any of it!!!! :) :)
Hootie and The Blowfish were SOOO good but really it was like 99% Darius. Such a great great artist! ... BTW this song was written by Bob Dylan in 1973 but he never finished it and I think he called it 'Rock Me Mama' ... then gave it to Old Crow Medicine Show.
Darius Rucker is a great singer. He didn't start out in country though. If you've ever heard a Hootie And The Blowfish song, you've heard Darius sing! "Let Her In" is my favorite Hootie tune.
Glad he liked it so much! He actually played it at the grand ole opry ,then Ole Crow Medicine Show came out and played with him. They actually wrote and originally performed it.
Bob Dylan actually wrote and recorded the the chorus and melody to this in 1973 then Old Crow Medicine Show wrote the verses a couple of decades later.
