George was always called the "quiet Beatle." He just kind of stayed in the background, occasionally singing a song. Once the Beatles broke up, his true talent started to show.

There’s a very good reason why this doesn’t sound like a typical George Harrison song. It’s not a George Harrison song! This is George’s cover of a Rudy Clark tune first recorded in 1962 by James Ray under the title “I’ve Got My Mind Set On You.”

Close to the time this came out, he was part of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. Other members of the group were Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne from ELO, and Tom Petty. Their biggest hits they did together were "Handle with Care" and "End of the Line".
@btgiv6009
@btgiv6009 2 года назад
Interestingly enough, the Traveling Wilburys came about when Harrison was in L.A. to record a B-side song for the "Got My Mind Set on You" single. He asked Jeff Lynn if he would help him come up with something, but because studio space is hard to come by on short notice, they ended up using Bob Dylan's home studio. Roy Orbison and Tom Petty came over, too, and the next thing they knew, they had written "Handle with Care". And then they thought, "Hmmmm......"

George was known early on as the “quiet Beatle”. He didn’t talk as much as the others, and later on became very spiritual as evidenced by his later Indian influenced Beatles music and solo albums such as All Things Must Pass. However, he had a very dry wit and could hold his own against John Lennon’s biting sarcasm. But George had a lighter side to him too and was friends and did projects with members of Monty Python. Jeff Lynne (ELO) produced the album this song came from (Cloud 9) and the two later formed the Traveling Wilburys which you reviewed a few months back and totally missed George’s involvement. You were able to identify Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, etc, but said something like ‘we don’t know who that guy is’ (George). As far as the Beatles go, a look into their pre psychedelic “Beatlemania” era would be nice. I think you would enjoy songs such as I Feel Fine, Ticket to Ride, Paperback Writer, Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood, And Your Bird Can Sing among many others.

Hello!!! George did have a great sense of humor. As a matter of fact, one Beatles myth is that when the group first auditioned for George Martin (their future producer, and enabler of their creativity),George had a lot of negative feedback for them. But he was a lovely man, and told them that if they "didn't like anything" they could tell him. George replied "well, I don"t like your tie". The young Beatles held their breath, expecting to be tossed out of the studio. George (first Harrison, then Martin) smiled, then burst out laughing. The record deal was sealed, really because of a wisecrack. Thanks for reading!

A common misnomer is that George Harrison wrote "Got My Mind Set on You." Understandable because generally George wrote all of his recorded songs with some exceptions. This was a song he knew from the old days he liked, choose to record it. they released it as a single and it went to #1. Wikipedia: "Got My Mind Set On You” was ex-Beatle George Harrison's first hit single in five years, peaking at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1988. It reached Number Two on the U.K. chart. The song was written by a former mailman named Rudy Clark and first recorded in 1962 by American singer James Ray.

George did a nostalgic song looking back on his time in the Beatles and I love it. It's called "When We Was Fab". He also did a beautiful tribute to the memory of John Lennon: "All Those Years Ago". Perhaps the most well-known song he's written was released while he was still a Beatle: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". It features a nice lead solo by George's friend Eric Clapton.

Weird Al Yankovic did a great parody cover of this called "This Song's Just Six Words Long" from his excellent "Even Worse" album, even if he actually used 7 words in the chorus ("This song is...") :-) On a more serious note, George's parent album "Cloud Nine" is a very good collection of songs - possibly one of the best solo albums by a Beatle.

George had his roots in the rock and roll of the fifties; they all did. Eventually you feel that urge to return to your roots. But I think you need to hear more early Beatles to get a sense of where they were coming from.
@thomastimlin1724
@thomastimlin1724 2 года назад
absolutely. Listening to the Beatles at random is misleading and out of sync. Too many dismiss their early recordings but do not understand how and why it evolved. they could only kick down the door with the fun, simpler love songs and rock because it was of the time they were coming from. To dismiss their earlier work as childish is absurd...they saved rock and roll from impending doom in my book.

1st time the Beatles were ever heard of in America and where Beatle mania in America originally started was right here in Southern Illinois, about 40 miles South of my location of Centralia, Illinois in the town of Benton. It was all thanks to George Harrison's sister having a song of theirs played on a local radio station. George Harrison bought the guitar he is playing in this video, in the town of Mt.Vernon, Illinois, where I heard it was bought somewhere in New York for a good amount of money.

One of my favorite songs of all time. Every time I hear it, I remember watching the video on my grandma's TV and jumping on the bed when I was little. This song was originally released by James Ray in 1961.

Just saw Paul McCartney in concert tonight in Boston. It was the fifth time I saw him. I wish I got to see George Harrison in concert.

George Harrison was a wonderful soul - serious, but a twisted sense of humor. Enjoy your journey into his music. Be blessed in the experience. :)

For a dose of the twisted sense of humor, they should check out his song "Crackerbox Palace" or "This Song".

Jeff Lynne from ELO on backing vocals. It's almost like George is using ELO as a backing band. That's Ringo on drums.

This is one that Weird Al parodied. His chorus was "This song is just six words long". He also was a major financial backer of The Life of Brian by Monty Python. And I think he also was a backer behind The Rutles, a parody of The Beatles that included Eric Idle from Monty Python.

When asked why he put so much into Life Of Brian, he said he thought the script was hilarious and he wanted to see the movie.

Don't forget about Time Bandits!!!! A truly awesome and original film with a stellar cast! George did the song for the closing credits as well as produced that one too!

On the Beatles White Album, George wrote and sang the song SAVOY TRUFFLE. Upbeat with horns.

I really love my favorite Beatle. He was also my mom's favorite. This song was so funny, I think I sang it a whole year as a kid. Now that he is gone is like magic to remember those times, when George was just doing songs and it was so normal. What a talented artist. RIP dear George Harrison.

I love the song and the video for "Got My Mind Set On You", but y'all know that's George Harrison's stunt double doing the dancing in the middle of the video! 😄 For the mellower Mr. Harrison, please react to "Give Me Love" and his salute to the Beatles "All Those Years Ago".

Yep! In the middle of the video, Harrison (through the use of a stunt double) performs a backflip from his chair and follows it with a dance routine before jumping back to his seat. It was choreographed by Vincent Paterson.

I remember this coming out - it was the very late 80s (1989, I believe) and was HUGE when it came out.

After the Beatles ended in 1970, George came out hot with the ALL THINGS MUST PASS album and the Concert for Bangladesh. Then, he went kind of semi-dormant for the rest of the 70s and 80s until 1987, when he erupted with another set of hits that kept him on the charts and in the public eye for three or four years. In the mid-1990s, he was busy with Paul and Ringo working on THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY, which included two "new" Beatles songs cobbled together from some unfinished tapes that John Lennon made in the late 1970s.

George wasn't even close to being semi-dormant in the years between "All Things Must Pass" in 1971 and the "Cloud Nine" album in 1987. He released *seven more solo albums* in that time period! :-) He also had some big hit songs, including two top ten hits: '73's "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" and '81's "All Those Years Ago."

George didn't just make music, he also was a film producer re Hand Made films. Amongst his musician friends were actors, directors and comedians. He also was a very creative gardener and designed an underground grotto on his land. He was a very clever and creative man.

Each of the Beatles was a real talent in their own right. It is no wonder, that together, they were one of the greatest bands of all time.
