This Metallica version got the original song closer to the newer generations. They decided to record it because they felt very close to the story Bob Seger tells in his lyrics, as they felt it could have easily been a song telling the Metallica story on the endless road, playing rock shows almost every night around the world. Thanks for doing this one, guys!!
This video is devastating. Makes me cry every time! Even the edited video was only shown after midnight on MTV back in the day. The role of the stripper is portrayed by Ginger Lynn, a former porn star. Their album Garage Inc. is an album of covers by them. They also do a killer cover of Whiskey In The Jar by Thin Lizzy.
I'll never forget MTV2 playing this video, _uncensored_ , around '98. They had a "Most Controversial Videos" special on regular MTV and then followed it up with a block of the videos uncut on MTV2. You saw Ginger Lynn's p* spread eagle, you saw the h* injection in Prodigy "Smack My B* Up", you saw everything! I still have a VHS of it.
The actress / woman being featured in this video was a popular porn star from the 1980's named Ginger Lynn. I think they purposely chose her for the video as a sort of social commentary on how the industry commoditizes women and then discards them as they age. It's a devil's bargain - money and fame for selling your soul. She does a good job of playing a troubled and pained woman in the video because i suspect in real life - she lived this type of tough a life. Thanks for your reaction - i always enjoy them.
Worked at a strip club off and on for a decade doing everything from bartending to dancing and when I was waitressing the club used to have porn stars come and do features. That was when things were changing drastically and fast because of free content online (2008-2009). You could tell a lot had seen better days and they were constantly on the road doing features for $2000-$4000 plus tips. One (forget the name) had literally just had a baby 3 weeks before. Horrible that she even had to be in that situation to begin with.
I am definitely not one for cover songs, love the originals, thats why i love the song! But this one here!!!! Knocked it outta of the park 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Love the traveling dancer back drop story. Beautiful version of Bob's song....❤
My favorite cover is Disturbed's version of "The Sound of Silence". You have reacted to the band Disturbed before. And, of course, you did the Simon and Garfunkel version. And like this song, Disturbed's cover starts off slow, but gets very hard. By the end, the lead singer holds the final note like Adele.
Nothing wrong with covers. A piece of music is not set in stone and should lend itself to creativity by others. Metallica smashes out of the park in this. But they always do.
Accidents And brain farts happen to us all. They are shooting a video and don't want to interrupt the moment by googling everyone's name. I appreciate that they are who they are and their genuine reactions. We are all human.💪☺️
Metallica are smart , they know they have lots of male listeners,, This message went thru .. and it never stops !!.. Merry Xmas to the RS-family and supporters, and to Metallica and their awesome fans !! You are all great people!!
Surprised more comments don't mention this. They would of knew this already if they saw the napster shit. James and Lars are the two big names from the band, they all good but through the band itself and Lars going after napster, it really drove those two names in peoples heads.
@@kilwrathWrong!! James Hetfield is the lead singer, Lars Ulrich is the drummer, Kirk Hammett on rhythm guitar, and it was Jason Newstead on bass guitar at the time 😄😄 The current bass player is Rob Trujillo 😄😄
The two of you must relate to this, I imagine. You're on a stage, in front of us, bearing your selves for us to see. People love you; people hate you .. performance comes with both the bitter and the sweet
This is not only a great cover, but it always hits me a little more emotionally because it reminds me how the Original bass player and band leader Cliff Burton died in a tour bus accident while they were supporting Ozzy in Europe. Cliff was so amazing and also eerie is that he and Randy Rhodes were both really into musical theory and different things they could do musically and both died way too young. One of those wow, what turn would music have taken if they were both alive today. Throw in Andy Wood from Mother Love Bone into that scenario. He is alive today and the Love Rock of Mother Love Bone never turns into the darker brooding Pearl Jam as they had to deal with the pain of losing Andy one of the true rock stars that flamed out before the world really knew him. Do Bob Seager Still the same and Mother Love Bone's Chloe Dancer Crown of Thorns (use the video where they mixed eddie and andy singing lead)
The one thing that is so great about metallica's music videos is that not only are they a fest sonically but they also tell great stories that you'll miss if you don't pay attention.
That's what the original by Seger was about basically. About his life on the road. Metallica turned it into a dark and haunting tale of a single mother stripper and hooker via the accompanying video and Hetfield''s delivery. And DAMN he nailed it HARD!
Bob sang it from a life on the road as a rock star and Metallica already did that with Wherever I May Roam and to use the POV of a mother trying to make a living in a not so comfortable way to just feed her kid is such a twist !!! Amazing they are amazing !!!!!
My young daughter once pointed out that they spent the entire video and song trying to make us feel sorry for her rough life, and then at the end, she says she'd make the same choices. All sympathy just went out the window.
Other covers by heavier bands worth checking out are Disturbed's version of Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence", Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar", Judas Priest's covers of Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust" and of Fleetwood Mac's "The Green Manalishi".
This song always brings me back to the 80s. Working nights at a 24 hour pancake house. We were a favorite spot of alot of touring bands. Think Denny's w/o the crowd. Some bands used to take half the restaurant, so they wouldn't get hassled by other customers for the way they looked. They always came in looking dog ass tired, which always reminded me of this song. And they never failed to do a complete 180 after hours of drinking gallons of coffee, smoking packs of cigarettes, and eating breakfast food covered in maple syrup. Dam I miss the 80s.
You once asked if there was any Metallica songs that was just instrumental, there is only two, "Orion" and "Call of ktulu". Would love to see y'all react to them.
Metallica, yes! I still haven't seen them react to FadeTo Black? Now, that will be an interesting reaction to them both. That's my favorite Metallica song. 💯🤘
Love the reaction. Metallica does a great job with this one. Please do Master of Puppets next. Definitely one you need to listen too. It's a lyrical and musical masterpiece. You definitely won't be disappointed. Keep up with your good work.
for me the best Metallica cover, they gave it new life, new depth and weight. and Kirk's guitar line🤩 played with slide, originally it was a saxophone. Hugs from Poland as always 😈😛
I'm so glad and surprised you are reacting to this revisioned classic! Not only did they make the song their own, but the video was a captivating short film in its own right. Absolutely brilliant!
This cover is one of the best cover songs ever made, especially with the video. When this first came out on MTV it BLEW people away. Seriously I sat there watching metal fans watching it slack-jawed.
Garage Inc is quite a collection of covers, from Bob Seger to Queen, Thin Lizzy to Motörhead, plus all the NWBHM and punk bands that shaped Metallica’s style… this is helluva track, one of the standouts. It’s undeniably still Seger’s words and structure, but it’s also unmistakably Metallica in the way it sounds and the spin Hetfield puts on the vocals. Love it.
A great example of the importance of framing. Differences of framing are usually accomplished using different words, but in this case it's done using visuals, and differences of intonation, vocal timbre and voice coloration. My favorite example of a different way to frame the same thing (just using different words): Is it a burnt piece of dead cow, covered with fungus? Or is it a well-done steak, smothered in mushrooms?
When I was in my early teens, I thought this was the original version. In my later teens, when I got into the rock my mom listened to, I found the Bob Seger original. I love them both equally.
Every loud guitar riff is replaced by the haunting saxophone from the original in my head. Hetfield's near scream lyrics are drowned out by the emotional impact of the original with Seger's voice painting a picture with no video needed. Bob Seger - A+ Metallica - B
Great reaction guys! This made my Friday morning. I've always loved Bob Seger's version...it's the original & best, but Metallica did it complete justice with this cover! They made it their own (AND the video - taking the words and applying it to a lady of the night instead of a traveling musician was brilliant - perfectly shows the parallels of those lives!) The Garage Inc. album had some incredible covers! HIGHLY suggest Astronomy (a Blue Oyster Cult track), Whiskey In The Jar (traditional Irish folk song, but Metallica's version is done like Thin Lizzy's), Sabbra Cadabra (Black Sabbath cover - mixed with A National Acrobat song - both from the same album). Metallica's covers are just awesome! Cheers.
The guitarist in my band suggested the number and I was sceptical about doing it. Then I heard the Metallica version and new it would work. As vocalist this is a song, where you can really grab it and take it somewhere because it builds and builds until you are '..out there in the spotlight you're a million miles away...... . It was an absolute showstopper and highlight to perform. Bob Seger wrote a great song. Metallica made it into a hard rock masterpiece............
I don’t know if you have heard the song, Land of Confusion. Original by Genesis with Phil Collins singing, cover done by Disturbed. One of my favorite covers
Here you go, if you want to hear a cool and different outside the box cover it's by the lead singer of Metallica; it's a cover of a Waylon Jennings song yes country...ready, it's James Hetfield - Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Gone Out Of Hand. Love this cover, love it.
That is so good! In a different universe where James didn't meet Lars, he could have easily been a country music icon in the style of Hank Williams Jr lol.
I think James may have related to these lyrics more than any song ever wrote himself. Which is crazy because he often times wrote right from his heart - and right from his pain.
Bob Seger stands alone, but this might be better than the original. You just taste the angst. The guitar rips the flesh from your bones and Hetfield conveys his anger perfectly. A masterpiece.
I was in a 7 1/2 yr. abusive marriage that I was lucky to get out of. The 2 good things that came from that marriage were my children and is the reason I tell anyone I would go through it all again. Because without that marriage I wouldn't have them nor my now grandchildren and any pain is worth them.
