This man literally woke up in another universe and immediately chose to ruin some kid’s life for fun. The definition of waking up and choosing violence
@@zsmoove3108”You’ve spun your last web, Spider-Man. Had you not been so selfish your little girlfriend’s death would’ve been quick and painless but now that you’ve really pissed me off… I’m going to finish her, nice, and slow. MJ and I?! Were gonna have one… helluva time!”
I love that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde aspect to and Green Goblin is to me the best out of this movie and this movie i don’t necessarily like it Green Goblin is what i came for and Tobey LOL
I really hate how they changed Green Goblin's character in this film entirely. He didn't have a split personality in the original Spider Man movie. It was stated at the beginning of the original movie before Norman turned into Green Goblin, that the serum's side effects were "Violence, aggression, and insanity". Meaning he was actually just insane. It's not like the serum created an entirely different personality. Norman was already madman before he even turned into Goblin, the serum's side effects only drove his madness even further to the point he would kill people without remorse. He didn't have a split personality, it was more like an "alter ego". Kinda like Walter White and his other "side"- Heisenberg. Or Clark Kent and his other "identity"- Superman.
@@justarandomguywholikesanimethey likely adapted the serum to some extent since then before Norman used it and the stated side effects were of the best description they could give based on their perspective without actually experiencing anything personally. The mirror scene also seems to indicate pretty well that they’re two separate beings. The goblin also mentions in both films aspects of Norman’s personality that he recognizes and hates. It’s like an evil father and terrified son relationship between the two.
He did though. if you go back to the mirror scene in spiderman 1. Goblin says that he is osborns best creation. and references the gas as the creation event.@@justarandomguywholikesanime
Doesn't he have to constantly fight the AI of his mechanic arms now? Back then both were in agreement so he literally had 0 hindrance to his own capability.
This film cemented why Green Goblin will always be Peter's greatest enemy. Unlike the other villains who treat Spiderman like he is just a pest in their way, Green Goblin's focus is entirely on Spiderman himself. He wants to hurt him, break him, like no one else, and he more or less achieves that in this film. He is Spiderman's Joker, a force of chaos and destruction that revels in evil.
True, but you forgot the why. Green Goblin in the Raimi films has an ideology; winners and losers. Some people are exceptional, the rest are here to support them. He acknowledges Spider-Man is exceptional like himself, yet cannot understand why he’d ever use his powers selflessly. He’s dismissive of that. So his fixation on Spider-Man comes down to him wanting to prove his ideology right. Spider-Man’s the only other exceptional person around, and if he’s not following Goblin’s ideals... what’s the point?
@@SpiderkillersInc True, he has a twisted ideology, in that having god-like power gives you the right to do whatever you want, and other people are there only to worship you. It's the complete reverse of "with great power, comes great responsibility". The fact Spiderman keep resisting Goblin's offers, and continues to use his powers selflessly, drives Goblin even more insane. He takes the Joker motto of "all it takes is one bad day", and tries to hurt Peter personally, in order to bring him down to his level. He would have succeeded in No Way Home, if it wasn't for Tobey's Spiderman getting in the way.
I love that they shattered the mask, brought the purple hood out (in a very conventional and logical way) and just relied on willem defoes facial expressions to do the Goblin face and it WORKED SO WELL.
Have you seen the production footage where the og mask is under the hood it looks perfect I kinda wished they had him where it for his entrance in the third act and have Defoe remove it when he fights Tom ( like in the movie where he removed the goggles )
@@fynnthefox9078I remember thinking about that too. I would always wonder “what if the failed serum mutated him to where he looks like the himself from the comics?”
That was a complaint about the first movie. It was good and all. Really did break a mold of the time. But the problem was that Dafoe was constrained by the mask as he has an excellent emoting ability.
Honestly the subtlety of having the Goblin realize before ANYONE else that they’re not on their earth any more. Really speaks to the intelligence of the goblin.
Makes you think doesn't it. Is this Goblin entity universal? Is he just a made up voice in his head? Or is it the product of the very weapon he invented. So many questions I have about this Goblin I love this character
@@JACKAL98 if those questions make you loose too much time and social skills leave them immediately, it's just a fictional movie afterall, it's funny to theorize on movies and wonder about nonsense, but these fake things made me loose important moments of my life, if i never knew about those i would already be a real man, not a loser
Yeah, all of his scenes (including the 2 brutal fight scenes with MCU Spider-Man) were amazing, though I was very disappointed they didn't do the rematch between him and his Spider-Man(Tobey Maguire)
coming back to this, THE BEST acting maybe ever, honestly going into this film I preferred spiderman and dr octopus, but this movie really hit in one scene near the end orange sky I heard green goblins voice, and i genuinley didnt hear it from the speakers, came from the BACK OF THE ROOM AT THE TOP FROM THE SKY I HEARD IT BEHIND ME, i know its speakers but i genuinley heard it in real life that one it was crazy and it really hit me, i asked the people around me and it wasn't just me...
God....I forgot Green Goblin is literally a super soldier. The 1st movie you really don't see how strong he is. Only when he holds the cable car. But in this movie he's stronger than Steve Rogers. And they show it perfectly here.
I disagree, I think the first movie portrays his strength incredibly well, especially in that final fight, like when he tears through Peter's webbing and it sounds like metal being torn apart, and the way he beats Peter into a bloody pulp. There's fewer feats of outright strength, but they make up for it with creative sound design and sheer brutality
Thanos is just a completely different type of villain. He’s a universal threat, isn’t unstable, and has a strong ideology. Goblin is just chaotic, and is such a personal villain. I think these two are easily the best villains in the MCU. There’s a few other good ones (Loki, Hela, Vulture), but nowhere near as developed and memorable.
@@thatstheway2429 i totally agree on Loki and i can close an eye on Hela, but Vulture sucked as a villain, MCU is good in everything except in doing Spider-Man right
Willem Dafoe massively elevates the material. The Goblin doesn't just feel like a supervillain, he feels like evil incarnate. One of the only villain performances that disturbs me as an adult.
3:53 Nahhhh getting tossed INTO a Spinebuster through SEVERAL stories of building has got to be one of the most disrespectful things I’ve seen in a fight😂😂😂
@@loomingmoon4682 that's immediately after transformation tho so ofc, in the rest of the film he's dishevelled and crazy but still somewhat functional if that makes sense
3:14 For the ones wondering, this scene was improvised by William, he wasn't supposed to smile and then laugh there, but because everyone liked the scene they decided to use it in the actual movie.
William Dafoe wasn't even originally supposed to be in the movie at all. He just showed up one day and started beating up Tom Holland. Thankfully Jon Watts was still filming.
That's such a Joker-esque thing to do tho. Laugh evily while taking a beating. But it doesn't feel like he stole from Joker's style. Joker's laugh is psychotic while Goblin's is menacing. So to speak. Willem DaFoe did a great job making it his own
From my perspective, in terms of dual personality, this movie showed a different person within Norman's mind, whereas the original movie showed two Normans.
@@Crichjo32 Goblin is Norman's insanity, violence, istinct, adrenaline, creepyness, genius mind all of wich at 100% when he takes over Norman, that's scary but i think that the fact that Electro is more unpredictable because you don't expect him to go insane with energy and burst lightnings out just because he feels like it...
I'd like to think in this movie he was using confusion and helplessness as an insincere mask over his true intentions, those being the ones the goblin acted upon (though the goblin took them to an insane degree)
The scene where Tobey stops Tom perfectly shows he's a completed character. He's killed the green goblin once before, and it made him lose a father figure, his best friend, and it ruined his life. 20 years later and he sees a ghost of that same man is about to be killed by his glider again, but this time he has the experience and heart to stop it, and save Tom from suffering the same fate he did. It doesn't complete his character arc, that happened years ago over regretting his mistakes and wishing he could try again with a goblin cure this time. But it is Tom's chance to learn from his mistakes and from those that came before him. How was this movie written in three weeks?
If you think this was written greatly than I don’t know what to tell you. So many lost potential. Doc Ock being the leader and creating the Sinister Six, but we had Doctor Strange interfering through the whole thing. Coming up with the plan to make them “normal” pretty pathetic. Norman just ending up being the main villain, it was just a total fan service of a movie without any actual progression to Tom’s Spidey. The movie ended with all that had happened like none of it ever happened. Waste. Now we have Tom Holland taking a break from acting. Like honestly they can’t get Spider-Man’s story properly done. Like was there any point in bringing in the Vulture and Mysterio? They had the opportunity to create something big in this movie especially with Toby and Andrew together. Yea cool movie, but not great at all. Total let down to me.
@@Red_Ribbon_Army. Really how so? Thinking back they pretty much ruined the story. It was cool that Vulture was the only villain that knew who Spidey was. Vulture is a member of the Sinister Six in the comics. They then bring in Mysterio who is also another member.. they couldv’e build up the story for an epic Sinister Six considering they brought back Doctor Octopus.. Electro.. TOTALLY MISSED OPPORTUNITY. They fcked it up. I’m curious how you see the next movie is going to be, since it pretty much “started over” for Peter.
I woulnd't say Toby's Spider-Man killed his villians, but he sure as shit failed to help them. As we see - all of them were perfectly fixable, troubled people. If only Toby had that much needed prep time back in the day... No wonder he took the second chance and nailed it.
3:17 Let’s be honest even Adults (especially from the Tobey Maguire Generation like me) not just Kids were Terrified by Willem Dafoe’s performance as Green Goblin. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this Movie seeing It In the Cinema and I remember that Laugh giving me the Ultimate Chills just like Heath Ledger as Joker. I didn’t realise how happy I would be to see Willem Dafoe return in No Way Home he was even Better in this Movie than In Spider-Man (2002).
He made that movie for me. Not only legendary fight scenes but the dialog is just phenomenal. "Gods dont have to choose, we take" "Strong enough to have it all, TOO WEAK TO TAKE IT!!!
God Green Goblin is to Spiderman as Joker is to Batman I still can't stop geeking over how good this movie was. William Dafoe made every happen. As the old saying goes a good protagonist can make a good but a good antagonistic is what make a story great.
Hate me all you want for me saying this but defoe’s green goblin… I like it more than ANY live action portrayal of the joker. Yes even more than Nicholson and ledger. As someone who grew up on the animated series im just a sucker for the nice Norman osborn & evil goblin story.
Honestly to me the movie wasn’t at all that great. Cool for what we got. Total fan service. It had a lot more potential being great rather than simplifying it into just the Green Goblin being the villain again.
@@loudtaste1046 He knew better than to say no to Aunt May though. She was gonna come whether Peter begged her not to or not. May was coming no matter what to keep her nephew alive.
I was excited enough to see Alfred Molina back as Doc Ock again; but when I saw Willem Defoe as the Green Goblin again, I nearly had a heart attack. Not only is Green Goblin my all time favorite Spider-Man villain, but Willem Defoe is one of my top favorite versions of Green Goblin, besides Steve Blum’s green goblin in “the Spectacular Spider-Man”.
The Green goblin is so dangerous unpredictable that the only one that could have stopped him... Was himself lol because he helped doc ock become normal with Peter👍
@@jacksonhernandez8970 Electro is more unpredictable because you don't expect him to go insane like you would with Lizard or Norman, so you might be zapped to death while you were having a normal conversation with Max because he zaps people in the middle of a conversation because he feels like it...
Green goblin is pure evil, which is why he's my favorite villain of all time. You can see in the scene in the penthouse the malevolence and pure sinister evil was emanating from him like a dark aura, his evil is so strong it was assaulting Spiderman's senses. He's not like the others, he's more.
“Let’s bring back Dafoe’s Norman back as the main villain, but mainly without the mask this time. Let Dafoe do his thing of being a maniacal monster!” = Greatest pitch idea ever! Barely an inconvenience! The only issue is, we want it again! We crave more!
Green Goblin's voice also makes him more scary & brutal villain.i have to say that this man is very perfect for goblin character. No one can replace him.
5:55 Thanos may have wiped out half of all life in the universe and then a 2014 variant of himself intended to use the Infinity Stones to wipe out the entire universe and recreate it to be grateful in his image. But the Green Goblin uses a Pumpkin Bomb to break open a corrupted spell that opens up the Multiverse. These two Marvel villains have topped it in my opinion
I really hate all the avengers movies and shit I also didn’t liked No way home the only great thing was Green goblin I watched this movie because of Norman. and i am also not a fan of the new spiderman / Marvel movies tv series. Or the new venom. I am oldschool I grew up with the raimi trilogy And with topher grace as Venom.
@@elmaz46 you grew up with the trilogy but Spider-Man was never just Sam Raimi's version, of course his take on the character revolutionazed the hero movies we see nowadays but you should never use it as a base to what Spider-Man should always be, you have to use the comics
The fact that tom isn't even his spiderman, like he has nothing to do with him but he still goes to do anything to ruin his life and manages to make himself his arch nemesis in just hours to the point that spiderman would try to kill him is just crazy
But Peter 1 (Tom) did something to Goblin. Peter 1 threatened to essentially kill him by curing Osborne. Kind of reminds me of that scene in Two-face part 1, BTAS when Harvey's therapist talked with "Big Bad Harv". When "Big Bad Harv" realized she tried to get rid of him he stated clearly "I'm not going anywhere Missy! If anyone's leaving it's Mr. Goody Good! And maybe you with him!"
Imagine being such a good actor, that you don’t even need the classic costume to convey the intensity of the green goblin. William Defoe really stood out and showed a new generation just how phenomenon an Actor can be. From being big in the 1980s, he is still going strong in the 2020s!
@@pstuddy The iconic mask made him look like a cheesy Power Rangers villain. And compared to Dafoe's performance in No Way Home, it restricted his vocal acting and face expressions.
I really think I prefer Willem Defoe in No away Home man. In a movie chalk full of the most iconic Spider-Man characters over the years he was the most brilliant actor in the room by far
He's a phenomenal actor. He should have at least been nominated for The Lighthouse but the Academy largely snubbed that movie outside of a cinematography nom.
Jeez, only 9 minutes and Dafoe made just as big an impact on me as his whole Raimi movie did. Man did amazing. I had his Goblin voice stuck in my head for the remainder of the night after watching NWH.
This movie finally made justice to Willem Dafoe's amazing acting: his Green Goblin performance deserves no mask hindering it.Just a hood and goggles as it should've been since the first movie. He totally sells Goblin and Osbourne as totally different people, depicting pure raw madness and agression. In the original movie, maybe only adding pointed metal ears protruding from the hood to complete the look.
Willem Dafoe is one of the best actors that i ever seen. He never fails if it comes to become one with the character and bring us a perfect performance!
The goblin always has a slight droop in his left eye, right from the viewers perspective. It's even noticeable when Harry confronts Peter in the restaurant in Sam Raimi Spidey 3, Harry has a slight droop in his left eye because in a sense he is the goblin at that point
Fun fact:Green goblin's voice and speaking is the actually voice of willem dafoe. When he plays norman he wears a denture. Guys the actor is really borned for playing this role...
I'm going to be really honest here... of all the characters in this film, I think the Green Goblin has the most tragic ending to his. Norman Osborne has seen and will never forget the destruction he's caused as the Goblin. And to top it all off - he's going to return to a world where his son is dead, his company is dead, and all he has left are the Goblin's memories that will haunt him forever.
Not necessarily. He’s returning to whenever it was he was taken from. Which, from what I understand of the Raimi continuity, was a point where Harry isn’t dead, and Oscorp might not necessarily be gone.
What the other guy said, Norman is going to return to the same time in the year he died. Harry and his company will still be around and now that he’s cured, he will be able to help people again.
After rewatching this film, I am really shocked by Willem Dafoe’s performance. He’s so good at playing so many characters and I think he’s my favourite actor
I like how Joker is a villain worth seeing actors try and succeed in different ways pulling it off. Wilem Defoe and Green Goblin is tough to beat and can't see many avenues for other actors to give it a shot. That would be cool
Crazy how it feels like the Green Goblin is in NWH much more than this. He did so much damage in that final hour of NWH. It's going to be very difficult to recast Dafoe as the Goblin.
I liked how Goblin isn’t just straight up overpowered by Peter, as even after the beating he got the Goblin appears relatively unscathed. This Peter has far more fighting experience against stronger opponents than Tobey’s Peter (who the Goblin is used to) and it makes sense he’d get the upper hand through skilful use of his webs and acrobatics. Yet, nothing can change the fact that May is dead, and that (thanks primarily to Goblin’s actions) Peter has to be forgotten by everyone he holds dear. This film has many issues IMO, but the characters aren’t among them, and in particular Defoe has not only maintained his status as the GOATed Goblin but actually surpassed his prior outing. He has honoured the Goblin’s legacy as one of those perfect villains who manages to win even when he loses.
@@Synthonym I think Goblin was feigning being weaker than he seemed when Peter had him on the ground - he was OK with Peter killing him if it meant he corrupted him. Goblin didn’t seem overtly injured or even that hurt by his beatdown, just dazed if anything.
This movie is a testament as to why I think Green Goblin is one of the goats when it comes to supervillians in general. He woke up, was smart enough to realize he was in another universe, immediately decides to cause complete chaos in that universe, psychologically torments a different Spiderman that isn't even his, and fucking kills off a main character.
I swear Green Goblin and Joker are probably the 2 most well written villians in any comic book universe. I mean out of all the superhero movies the best performances have been 2 jokers (ledger and Nicholson), Green Goblin (Defoe) and Magneto (Ian McKlellan).
Something I just realized about Goblin over how smart he is, he has total control of Norman here, which just makes him so much scarier. In 'Spider-Man' (2002), Goblin would phase in and out almost like in spurts, where you couldn't really tell who's in control most of the time, which is scary, but allowing for Norman to still feel in control and safe when he's talking. Here, Norman is just a tool, where Goblin will literally use him as a puppet for his endeavors, so when you see Norman talking, you can't tell if it's actually Norman or just Goblin pretending, but you know it's the Goblin's intent to let him talk, so you'll think there's no more danger. That brings a total new layer to the character, because you think you know when Willem's playing each one, but the truth is that you can't.
Willem Dafoe, once again, reminds us why Goblin is to Spider-Man as Joker is to Batman. His performance and comic accuracy/modernization work so well, especially the ability to change tones and work with the reflective personalities of both Goblin and Osborn
Spider-Man 2 may have been the best movie in Raimi’s trilogy, but I always loved the first movie more, because by God Dafoe’s Goblin is the GOAT. And he proved it in No Way Home. In a movie with all three live action Spider Men sharing the screen he manages to still steal the whole show.
@@imtyler99yearsago90it’s a line from Tobey Maguire in Spiderman 3. During the first fight scene between him and Harry (New Goblin) there’s a bit where Harry throws those flying Pumpkin Bombs, to which Peter responds with “hate those things…”
I know it's been said, but you can tell the reason why Willem just stepped right back into this role like there wasn't 15 years separating him since the last time he played him, means not only was he never bitter about it (like some uppity "ar-teest" people are because I have no idea why), he actively was anticipating a chance to do it one more time and practices in his spare time for shits and giggles
See sometimes people portray goblin as an extension of Norman Osborne, but Defoe portrays the two as completely different people which is something I think most prefer. Goblin being this other identity that is far more cunning and manipulative than Norman makes him that much scarier. Like you are never sure who is the one doing the talking since goblin can mimic and pretend to be norman so expertly. And that's what makes him a truly great and terrifying villain
i Know there are lots of complains about the movie, but the green goblin scenes are masterfully done honestly. especially with how dark and brutal they are, I was not expecting them to get that dark with the goblin but they really went all the way with him and I love it, I wish we could see more unhinged dark Mcu like we saw in infinity war and endgame
