Awesome job. We have a Cricket Cart with the same Truck and ramps. Actually looks and works like your cart except the collapse is manual on ours. I like the power feature on yours! The Cricket has an optional Remote Control that can be installed, which we did, ( 350.00 ) and makes it super easy to load and unload. Still you did a great job adapting.

rlr4294: I was thinking of doing something similar using a chain instead of cables between the lower front tie downs on my Ford F150. However, I am concerned that the force pulling to the center of the bed might pull the tie downs out of the bed mounts. I will be pulling a 300 lb Cricket golf cart up similar 7 ft ramps. So using a cable and your winch has not caused any damage?

@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 10 месяцев назад
Don, The winch is installed for safety reasons. While most golf carts can be loaded onto a truck bed with a ramp, it is not recommended to attempt inclines that are almost twice the grade ability of the cart. It is unsafe to guide a moving cart up the ramp while holding the pedal with grades that exceed the maximum grade ability of the cart by more than 33%. Kangacruz golf carts can safely handle inclines with a maximum grade of 20%. Furthermore, it is not safe to try and control the cart when it is coming down the ramp, as it can quickly run down the incline without any control or cable to hold it back. Therefore, using a winch to control the cart's upward and downward movements while on a ramp during loading and unloading is much safer and easier. Thanks for watching my video! Norman

Excellent video. I wanted to understand your design thought process. Is the basic idea that the tension force is transferred to the base of the truck using the horizontal member closer to the tail gate? And the component of the force that will force the stand to rotate forward is the only force that is on strap that is hooked on the side hooks? Which must be smaller.. I need to refresh my statics from 40 years ago to get the equation right.. Hopefully that would be much lower, so those don't rip out. Its a great idea, since it works. And if I am thinking correctly about your design, please let me know. So, that we can compute the maximum load more accurately. Regardless, great idea. I found your link looking for something that can pull up 500 lbs without relying too much on the F150 aluminum body.
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch Год назад
Ram, The winch stand was designed to allow 65% of the downward force to be applied to the 18-inch steel angle brackets that face forward on top of the 2X4s. When the winch is pulling the golf cart up the ramps, the 2X4s are pressing down onto the truck bed stopping the winch stand from shifting outward. Only 35% of the force is applied to the anchor points inside the truck bed. That is why only one 5,000-pound capacity strap attached to two anchor points can hold the winch stand in place without breaking the strap or bending and breaking the anchor points. The tie-down brackets in an F250 Ford truck have a maximum force between directly opposed cleats of 275 pounds and a maximum force between diagonally opposed cleats of 600 pounds. The pully on the 12-inch 2x4 near the tailgate reduces the force needed to pull the weight up the ramp. This stand can only pull up to a maximum of 500 pounds. Thanks for watching my video, Norman

There is an electric winch that is made to mount to a trailer ball or chain/cable. You can also use it manually if needed.
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 4 месяца назад
I am aware of the portable hitch ball winch, but it will only function correctly if it is properly installed. It cannot be used with your truck's hitch ball since it is too low to the ground. You need to place the hitch ball winch at a height of at least 17 inches from the truck bed floor. It is crucial to install a winch properly to avoid causing harm to individuals operating or standing near the equipment in case the winch fails at any point during the winching process. Ensure that you calculate and construct a suitable mounting point in your truck. Depending on the height of the truck bed, the length of the ramps, and the weight of the object, the height required to mount the winch in the truck or trailer can be determined. If the winch is installed in the truck bed floor and your truck bed is 35 inches high above the ground, as you pull the object up the incline on the ramps, every inch you pull the object up, it exerts a downward force on the cable. This causes a lot of resistance on the winch and cable which can be quite challenging to handle. Increasing the height of the hitch ball in the truck bed reduces resistance on the winch and cable. The simple formula for a winch is Force = Mass x Acceleration, or F = m x a. This means that the force required to lift an object with a winch is directly proportional to its mass and the acceleration at which it is being lifted. The formula for calculating the ramp angle is Angle = inverse tangent (height/length). This means that the angle of a ramp is determined by dividing the height of the ramp by its length and finding the inverse tangent of that value. The relationship between the ramp angle and the force required to pull an object up the ramp is that the steeper the angle of the ramp, the more force will be required to pull the object up. This is because the steeper the ramp, the greater the vertical distance the object needs to be lifted, resulting in a higher required force. The mass of an object does not directly affect the angle of a ramp needed to lift it. The angle of the ramp is primarily affected by the height and length of the ramp, as well as the force required to lift the object. Thanks for watching my video Norman

@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 2 года назад
The golf cart is made by Kangacruz out of Canada. It is a custom-built cart. Once ordered, it takes about 8-10 weeks to receive. Kangacruz is a small family-run business. Unfortunately, they have shut down. Here is what it states on their website: Due to the USA imposed tariffs, we suffered major losses and then added to that, the COVID-19 pandemic which completely shut down operations and cash flow. This combined with an uncertain recovery time, unfortunately, forced us to sadly make the decision to shut down operations indefinitely and liquidate all assets, back in May of 2020, making us a business statistic of both the USA tariffs and the COVID-19 pandemic. Since our shut down, as always others have tried to copy our carts. If you are in the market for a mini-golf cart, do your research and be an informed customer, purchase wisely, do not be fooled by others stating their carts are the same as our carts,... they are not, ... other carts that may even look like our carts, they also, are not. There was and only will be one Kangacruz, it's what you don't see that made Kangacruz different. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Stay safe. There is still information about their carts that can explain how well the carts are built. You may be able to find one for sale by an owner. Click this link to view the website: www.kangacruz.com Thanks, Norman

I'm looking to DIY one similar, but with a landscape timber, or wooden 4x4 attached to the factory front tie downs in my 1996 Dodge Ram 1500. (In the flooring) or add it to the rear of the bed to drag John Deere lawn tractors onto a tilt bed trailer. Nothing permanent, but also a fast mod. Will be loading/unloading John Deere 185 Hydro: Weight: 625 to 645 pounds lbs. John Deere Model 265 Weight: 630 to 755 pounds. John Deere L110: Weight: 462 lbs or 209 kg. STX38 Weight: 433 lbs. J. D. Model 111 Weight: 445 lbs, or 201 kg. As I'll be moving mowers quite often, I'll need something sturdy, but quickly, and easily secured. Just picking your brain for a way to make a secure connection between the wood, and the tiedowns. Thinking about lag type eyebolts to connect chains from the wood to the tie downs. Maybe I'm overthinking the idea? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Michael, Once you decide on the following: • The type materials you plan to use to build the winch frame. • How the winch frame will be anchored to the truck. • The type of hardware components you plan to use. You will need to do some calculations and research. You need to know the tensile strength of each component. (Strength refers to the ability of a component to resist loads without failure due to excessive stress or deformation). You need a winch rated at minimum 1.5 times the weight you need to pull. Also remember winch weight pulling capacity changes significantly on an incline. Pulling a 600-pound lawnmower up a 30-degree incline can reduce the pulling capacity by more than 15%. Calculate the force required (normal and gravitational,) to pull the mowers up the (% of incline you have using the length and rise of the ramp. Use the heaviest mower weight you plan to load for this calculation. You need to know where the normal force is being applied to each of the components. Example: On my winch stand, it was designed to let 65% of the downward force to be applied to the 18-inch steel angle brackets that face forward on top of the 2X4’s. When the winch is pulling the golf cart up the ramps, the 2X4’s is pressing downward onto the truck bed stopping the winch stand from shifting outward. Only 35% of the force is being applied to the anchor points inside the truck bed. That is why only one 5,000-pound capacity strap attached to two anchor points can hold the winch stand in place without breaking the strap or bending and breaking the anchor points. You mentioned using wood for your frame, wood also has tensile strength. You can find this information online. The anchor points in your truck bed also have a weight capacity limit, this may be available from the manufacture’s specifications sheets. Only use components that meet or exceed the force weight limit needed to safely pull the lawnmowers up into your truck bed. Normal force, Incline and rise and other physics calculators are available online to help you calculate accurately. I hope this helps, Thanks for watching my video, Norman

@NormanGooch Год назад
The winch stand shown in the video is built for 500 pounds or less with a 39” ramp height and 7.5 ft ramp run. Depending on the height and length of the ramp you plan to use, you need to calculate the rise and run to make sure you can pull 600 pounds. Longer ramps and lower rise will reduce the force needed to pull the weight up the ramp. Thanks, Norman

Do you think this would handle a load of up to 1000lbs? If if not what would you substitute? It wouldn’t be a daily thing it would be something barely used 2x a month.
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch Год назад
Zach, Unfortunately, this set-up would not handle 1000 pounds. The framework is not able to withstand that much weight resistance. To pull 1000 pounds the dynamics of the framework would have to change significantly. You will have to calculate using physics to determine the force, rise, object weight, angle, distance, etc. to redesign a winch framework that can handle the weight you want to load. You will not be able to use the tie-down brackets in your truck bed to secure the frame. The tie-down brackets in an F250 Ford truck have a maximum force between directly opposed cleats of 275 pounds and a maximum force between diagonally opposed cleats of 600 pounds. The framework would need a welded steel frame and most likely be bolted through the floor to the frame of your truck. I hope this helps, thanks for watching my video. Norman

Have you built a wench stand that would work with a heavier load?
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 10 месяцев назад
Unfortunately, it's not possible to increase the weight limit for tie-down brackets in the truck bed. This means that if you want to be able to pull heavier weight, you'll need to bolt it to the frame. Using tie-downs puts a limit on the amount of stress that can be placed on each holding point, and as the strength of the pull increases, the capacity of the tie-downs is reduced. Thanks for watching my video. Norman

It seems you could’ve just strapped the winch directly to the yellow strap making the rest of the modifications unnecessary. Or am I wrong?
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch Год назад
Dan, That would not work. The amount of force, rise, object weight, angle, and travel distance would be too much resistance connecting only to a winch and strap. The steel framework attached to the winch takes 60% of the downward pressure off the straps and tie-down brackets on both sides of the truck. As the rise increases, the weight also increases significantly. The steel frames outward front legs, press against the floor of the truck when there is resistance applied to the winch. With almost 4 feet of legs across the bed of the truck, it allows the small winch and strap to handle 500 pounds of dry weight multiplied by the rise and distance. Thanks for watching my video. I set the winch to freewheel and back the golf cart to the end of the truck with about a foot of slack in the cable, then I back the cart until the rear wheels are on the top of the ramp, with the cable tighten, I reverse the winch and the golf cart will roll down the ramp as I operate winch. Once the rear wheels touch the ground, I back the cart until the front wheels are on the ground. I then remove the winch hook, and it is ready to drive. Thanks for watching my video Norman

Scott I never found it practical or safe to try and locate the right size hill, mound, or ditch bank to load or unload a golf cart. I travel to several states and different campgrounds up and down the Eastern Seaboard. When I arrive after driving for several hours, I don’t want to try and find a place to unload the golf cart. I can safely unload or load the golf cart at my campground site in less than 10 minutes with the winch stand. Once you obtain all the parts needed to build the stand, it can be assembled in about 3 hours, well worth the time and effort to always know you can safely get your golf cart on and off the truck and be ready to go. Can’t you make the entire thing out of wood?
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 5 месяцев назад
You can, but I would not recommend it. You'll need more materials and a larger stand if you build it out of wood to withstand the force that will be applied. To achieve the same results with a wooden frame, the framework's dynamics would need to undergo significant changes. You must use physics to calculate the necessary force, rise, object weight, angle, distance, wood's tensile strength, and the hardware's tensile strength used to assemble it. The ultimate tensile strength, also known as the ultimate strength, is the maximum stress the material can withstand before failure. The steel winch stand is designed to allow 65% of the downward force to be applied to the 18-inch steel angle brackets that face forward on top of the 2X4s. When the winch is pulling the golf cart up the ramps, the 2X4s are only used for pressing down onto the truck bed stopping the winch stand from shifting outward. Allowing only 35% of the force to be applied to the anchor points inside the truck bed. It is crucial to construct a winch stand properly to avoid causing harm to yourself or individuals operating or standing near the equipment in case the winch fails at any point during the winching process. Ensure that you calculate and construct a suitable structure if you decide to only use wood. Thanks for watching my video Norman

Good idea and build but i think im going to try and make a telescoping bracket that uses j bolts at the ends and some 1” all thread for the telescoping with some square stock pipe that the winch will u bolt to.. at first i was just using a ratchet strap attached to both top bed loops and had the winch with a u bolt holding it to the strap.. dont do this.. it hurts when it breaks.. both the truck and your dumb ass standing anywhere near it when it breaks.. by your im referring to myself.. got smacked in the face by the winch then crushed by the generator i was pulling into the bed.. dont have anybody around ever so was stuck there for a good long bit till the mail man came around and called 911.. worst part about it all was i made friends with a colony of red ants that were there…. Then made enemies with em and they declared war with me.. that sucked.. the jaw was bad and back but the ants.. good story to tell but bad one to be able to tell it firsthand..

Sorry to hear about your injury. That sounds really painful! I hope you can design a winch system for your truck that is safer and easier to use. "I understand the pain of fire ants as we have them here as well. They are very aggressive and their bites can be multiple at once. I'm relieved to hear that you are recovering from the accident. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas! Thank you for taking the time to watch my video." Norman

Why not just drive in on.

There are two reasons: 1. Safety -The incline exceeds the maximum recommended capability of the golf cart by over 20%. When adding additional body weight of 150 pounds the stability is extremely compromised and could flip over backwards as the cart moves up the ramp and even becomes more unstable as the cart declines down the ramp. 2. Motor power- Since this golf cart is a compact collapsible model, it only has a 2000 watt motor. The limited power of the motor is not strong enough to go up the ramp. If you try to drive the golf cart up the ramp, the motor will stall and it stop and will not move forward. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching my video! Norman
