My little brother was mostly non-verbal until he was 3. He was tested for Autism among other things, but the actual problem was that he had fluid in his ears. Basically, everything sounded like he was under water for the first 3 years of his life and ended up having to have tubes put in until the fluid drained. It's a lot to explain but it sounds a lot like what Noah is going through. He is 15 now and still has anger/behavioural issues from this so where you're having trouble getting in to see doctors for developmental issues and such, try taking Noah to a hearing specialist! I feel like a lot of moms don't know about this possibility, so I'd feel relieved if you acknowledged this comment so I know you know this is a possibility. 🤗 Been with you since Vine, so excited for baby girl! ❤️
This is what I had when I was a toddler! Not autism- but fluid in my ears. Same thing that I reached all my milestones besides speech but understood everything! But when I did start to speak, it was minimal, and didn’t always pronounce things correctly. Had the tubes put and sorted it out and then it was all good :) I feel like this could be a possibility with Noah too!
@@CFGMusic98 Yes! This is the exact thing with my brother. He went to speech pathologist and many other specialists and doctors, because my mom thought he could have a developmental disorder, but it was truly physical. I hope this is the case with Noah, and that they have an easier time getting into a hearing specialist than they are with the developmental specialists.
I had a similar issue as a toddler. Didn't really talk until I was 2 and had tubes put in my ears to clear out the infection. Didn't have lasting anger issues luckily, but I don't think my parents have ever mentioned me having any. I think for baby me, not being able to hear just kind of put me in my own world and I was just vibing there.
@@Monocultured01 I don't know anyone else, personally, who this has happened to, so it's kinda good to hear others have! :) Mild anger issues run in my family, but I think being as old as 3 and having the tubes for years just really held him back from proper behavioural development during those important years, especially where boys already are behind there, genetically. He was just never really able to catch up to others' maturity levels until now. We had him tested all through Elementary and Jr. High, and luckily it was nothing more than delayed behavioral development due to impaired hearing from birth, through such important developmental ages.
Only the last year I got diagnosed that I’m actually in the spectrum with ASD. And growing up, it was very very difficult... I wish my mother was as caring and as patient as you are, Jessi! Noah has amazing supports
As an autistic adult I wanna say please stop using ASD- it's autism, it's not a disorder. The hardships of autism are caused by other people not understanding autistic people's needs and not accomodating them, and trying to force them to behave other ways. We aren't disordered x

Try 3 after 3 it’s like you can do one blindfolded lol I don’t know how I did it and as a single mom. I had all 3 of my kids within 3 yrs apart all bc babies not planned for me I think bc my oldest was 2 when I had my 2nd it was hard but then 6 mths after having my 2nd I was pregnant again so I don’t think I had long time to know the difference from one to two. Next thing you know I had a newborn a 14 mth old and a 3 yr old. That 3rd one did me in. But my kids all had medical issues also so it was very exhausting as a single mom. But my kids are all so very close which I’m grateful for. All over 18 and I sit and wonder how the heck did I do all that. Empty nester now and I miss it and never thought I’d say that. But it’s way too quiet. But having a 2nd child after your first is 2 yrs old I think is actually a really good age difference in my option.
As a pediatric OT I am so glad you found our profession to be useful! You’re right, once he gets to preschool he will flourish :) having those peer models is the best thing for him in this stage.
I'm 32, and have spent the past 3 years trying to get evaluated. I was JUST diagnosed with ADHD. I just love how in tune with Noah you are. You totally get it's not a marker of intelligence, brains just work differently. I love my parents, but MAN, I can't imagine how I could've thrived if I had one talk and breathe me through crisis with as much grace. He'll move mountains.
My mom had 3 kids under 5 years old and said it was the easiest because instead of having to have my Dad watch my bro and my mom watch me, we all played with each other and entertained ourselves for hours lol 🥰 No matter what happens in life, Congrats on your Rainbow Baby Jessi!😍💕
As an autistic adult I highly reccomend teaching sign language now or any time! Speaking with sound is not necessary for a healthy wonderful life, but communicating to a good level really really helps. Getting him to learn sign language won't delay his verbal speech, and it will absolutely help him understand, express himself, and prevent any frustration or distress. I know he's learning lots more speech but many human beings just don't have the same grasp of speech as others and that's okay! Sign language is language!
It's very normal for bilingual or trilingual children to start speaking a lot later than they're supposed to. It takes time for their brains to separate the different languages. It normally helps if they can associate one language with one person.
This is also a great place to remind everybody that it's MUCH harder for girls and women to get diagnosis on things like autism, ADHD etc. Spread the word!
This is true. I got diagnosed with ADHD at like 9, and that's considered very early for girls. If it hadn't been for the fact that my inability to focus was extremely obvious to the point where every adult in my life would joke about how I was "in my own little world", I doubt I'd have gotten diagnosed as a child.

Im a special education preschool teacher and I have what’s called an inclusion class! I have a mix of typically developing and delayed students. The students with delays really benefit from having peer models
Something that helps with other "older sibling transition" is to give him a job to do for the baby 😄 if he feels like he's taking care of her that makes him more an interactive part of baby coming home rather than feeling like all the attention has been taken away
My brother didn't fully start speaking till he was 3 and he had a hard time at school and then my parents got him tested for learning disabilities and found out he was dyslexic, so maybe look into learning disabilities as well!

We had a miscarriage three years ago. When I got pregnant again that dipper was SO helpful with my anxiety. I use to listen to the baby all the time! Now our rainbow baby is two week old. ❤️🌈 Congrats!
So glad you did an update! As a nursery teacher, imo, kids are the most difficult at the age of 4. If certain things get a little more stressful just know it´s normal. It´s amazing how much you grew as a parent. Do you even realise how amazing it is, that Noah is wearing his glasses for a long time without taking them off?!?!
Based on what you’re describing it sounds like a sensory delay. My son is turning 4 in July and he has a sever sensory delay and severe speech delay and he has been in OT since January and speech since he was 18 Mos old. It has worked wonders. He gets over stimulated and will bite his hands or grab his manly hood. Wish him and mommy + daddy the best.

My husband is in August and the only person I’ve ever met in my 41 yrs that has a b day in August I did find that odd. For my family we have a lot of May b days and I’m May and so is my son and my girls are in March. But yes I agree August babies are awesome bc my husband is awesome 💜
My son is almost 4 and he was diagnosed with autism in March. Noah's story sounds just like my son's. I hope you CAN get him evaluated but so awesome he's already in therapy for his speech!!
My son was an emergency c-section and my daughter was a scheduled c-section. With my son it was traumatic and horrible. I had postpartum depression along with PTSD it was soo difficult. With my daughter it was SO incredible. It felt like going into a regular appointment and BOOM we had a baby. Plus the drugs they gave me had me feeling incredible 😬😅 I don't think you'll regret your decision for a second! In general, csections are harder to recover from but it was well worth it. I don't think I could have handled the stress of a vbac worrying about if/when something could go wrong since my mental health was also pretty bad at that time. I love you so much and I hope everything goes smoothly for you! 💓💓 I've been watching your videos since long before you got pregnant with Noah and honestly I still rewatch your c-section video because it just makes me bawl and hits so close to home. We have so much in common I feel like I have this close friend who knows what I've been through. Our kids are even close in age 😭😭 a boy then a girl! Sorry this was so long. My 3 and a half year old just got diagnosed with autism in January. It’s been rough, he still considered non verbal but he does have a lot of repetitive speech , he likes to sing to songs, although you can’t understand exactly what he’s saying but you can tell he is singing to the song. He started preschool and therapy in February and that when we’ve seen the most improvement, he loves school so much! It has been so good for him. I’m sure Noah will flourish when he starts school! He’s so cute btw
Awh, hearing you describe it, I was definitely speech delayed as a child. I would rely on my older sister or other adults to understand what I saying by just pointing. I started talking a little more when I was 3 years old, but I'm a total chatter box now. My family and I always joke that I'm making up for lost time. Growing up, I loved reading, but I'm definitely a slow reader and that's okay. I grew up loving science and math and now am a scientist. Even if speech isn't his strong suit, there will be other things he succeeds in! I know being first time parents is stressful, but everything will be alright!
i have been 98% nonverbal since i was 6 years old and was even diagnosed with an anxiety disorder called selective mutism. and while i am finally almost completely verbal with people, i wish my family would’ve been persistent with getting more answers for my diagnosis and testing me for autism. all i gotta say is keep being patient with him and keep advocating for him always. the world can be cruel and will not always understand. :(

My aunt made up songs for each activity (eating, sleeping, playing, clean up etc) and kept the words simple and sang them before everytime, her daughter who was non verbal for 3 years slowly began singing with her.

I work in neuropsychology and have been formally trained to diagnose autism, what you are explaining doesn’t sound like autism especially with his interest in being social and looking to you for comfort when he’s frustrated, but it sounds like you are doing an amazing job with him!!
Girl SAME with the c-section with the second baby! My mental health needed something planned and to prove to myself that the second time around wouldn’t be so traumatic and chaotic. It was fantastic and very healing for me! Happy to know someone felt the same! You’ll do amazing mama! 💛

You are describing my daughter to a T when she was that age. She is turning 8 this summer and I can tell you her speech, communication and understanding has gone through the roof since than. She started kindergarten and I was so so scared and she rocked it. She repeated K just to gain her confidence in herself and better communication (her grades were there to pass) Now she’s finishing 1st and she is such a little person it’s crazy. She still has a bit of a struggle with back and forth convo...Almost like a block in her mind but can fully talk and understand. She just blocks people out sometimes or gets like anxiety and shuts things out. She’s never been diagnosed with anything, never finished the evaluation. And honestly I’m glad at this point so she doesn’t have a label on her for life. Not that’s that’s bad. And if we need to we will. But she came into her own at her own time and it’s like night and day from 4-5 and than 5-almost 8 wow the difference. Noah will be great! Keep up the good work! **just to clarify a diagnosis is not bad. I’m not saying that. I just don’t trust docs fully and I know people that have been misdiagnosed so I didn’t want to push it.**
You're probably never going to see this. But I wanted to tell you about my son. Noah reminds me so much of him when he was that age, like everything you talk about, even when he was a toddler. He had speech delay aswell and honestly, it went on until he was 6! Like he never said a word, only a few until then. He was starting school and I was so worried, we were taking him to speech therapy from a young age, which helped only a little, took him to a bunch of doctors but he wasn't diagnosed with anything, one Pediatrician just said he's quirky lol I wanted to keep him back one more year but they were like no, he'll be fine he can't delay school. So anyway, his speech went from 0 to 100 that year. He struggled a little with certain words, or like repeating words sometimes, kind of like a stutter, but grew out of that aswell. When he was younger he was obsessed with pulling everything out of drawers, playing with random stuff, just being curious, like you we had to put locks and gates on everything! And he's grown out of it, mostly, but what we realised was, he's super super intelligent. He loves building computers, he reads alot and knows the most random things. He turned 12 yesterday, he's starting grade 7 next year, has a big group of friends, talks perfectly, he even does alot of presentations at school (which I can't even do) and loves doing comedy skits infront of the while school. I know, for a kid who couldn't talk. And then I realised, all the things I used to worry about was nothing to worry about. But I wish someone told me. I have a daughter too, she's a year and half younger, complete opposites though, she's super sporty, loud, vivacious and was rambling since birth. I also had a vbac with her. But I totally understand where you said you need to feel confident about it. And I did for sure, which made a huge difference. Giving birth the way you are most confident and comfortable with is the only way, luckily we have choices. Good luck with everything I love watching your life updates xx
I have Bilateral Sensory Deficit Disorder. I didn’t start saying mama or dada until I was 2, and didn’t start walking until I was 2. I was in OT and Speech Therapy until I was 10. I didn’t start tying my own shoes or putting on my own clothes until I was 7. I was in Special Education until high school. But, here I am with a master’s degree and a music teaching career! Noah will be just fine!!!
My son was the exact same way. He was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and on the spectrum which is PDD pervasive developmental disorder. Then years later finally found a good dr to help to realize he also had auditory processing as well. Definitely a new way of learning but a good one when you get the right diagnoses. But dr don’t like to put label on kids. My son definitely had trouble I school bc public schools really suck for children with learning disabilities. Bc my son wasn’t a “behavioral” child. He was always a quiet child and very emotional and never asked for help. But since he didn’t cause issues in class they just really failed him. Took me til he was in 6th grade to get him on an IEP. Took me til he was in 2nd grade to get him on the 504. Which he needed an IEP. Medical diagnoses means nothing to public school. So if he is diagnosed and needs extra help I highly recommend private school with other children like him bc in public school they really don’t help. My son was held back in 1st grade then again should have been held back in 8th grade but they passed him into high school. I was a single mom and disabled. And couldn’t afford private school and I tried to get help. It took me getting an advocate just to get him an IEP I truly hope things have got better but the Fl school system was bad. When it comes to getting help for your child that is main stream with delays. But not extremely delayed in their eyes. But he was definitely failed and they just passed him on even with failing grades. He ended up hating school bc he got made fun of it was a nightmare and many parents like myself had the same issues I did with their children. I was told many times bc he didn’t act out there wasn’t much they could do. So if he hurt other kids or caused a distraction or disruption in class then he would have got more help. Please make that make sense. He is 18 now and didn’t finish school. Working with him to get his ged he is has a thinking process of about a 15 ish year old. He has always been about 3-4 yrs behind. As he was for growth also. He didn’t grow for the longest time. He was 15 and weighted less than 50 lbs and about 4 ft tall. Finally about 17 with seeing a specialist endocrinologist and getting shots to help him hit puberty he shot up some in height but can gain weight for anything and his voice finally started changing. He is my baby. My other two are girls and are older. But I truly hope if you see this that you get the best of the best and push and demand help when he starts school. They may say no if it’s public. Not sure how other states are but the horror stories I’ve heard just like mine. It’s truly sad. My son was in OT and that helped so much with his learning his name as well as speech therapist. Thanks for the update. Hopefully you see this. I only tell you to be aware of what could be ahead and hopefully you have already looked into certain schools for him. I wish I had the help back then and knew all I did now. Much love hun. 💜 sorry for the long comment
My sister (21 now) was nonverbal until she was 6. She is bilingual (English and Spanish) and my parents didn’t speak English so they couldn’t help her much. She started in speech therapy classes and once she interacted with kids her age she immediately improved and became better with speaking. In elementary school she tested out of math and English, in middle school took high school offered classes, and in high school graduated with a GPA of 4.3 and in the top 1% of her class. Everyone is different but time will tell and it seems you are doing everything needed. Keep it up mama!
It all happens in the blink of an eye! Mine are 29, 25 and 21!!! THEY WERE TODDLERS 6 MONTHS AGO...I SWEAR! Just stop and remind yourself that these are the GOOD TIMES OFTEN. I love seeing how happy you are!

My son was born the exact same as yours (August 18th, 2017). He has Autism and is pretty much like Noah. He understands pretty much everything but is still speech delayed. Can talk a lot more than he did when he was little but still behind for his age. Whether Noah is just speech delayed or has Autism, he’ll be fine. You seem like a great mom who’s going to encourage him and love him through everything 😊
I'm a speech therapist (mainly working with autistic children) and I highly recommend reading the book More Than Words! The fact that he can understand you, is copying others, and is making requests are all very good things :) The most important thing is that he has caring adults who love and accept him, which he obviously does. Also make sure to get his hearing checked if you haven't!
How did I never realise Noah is only a few months older than my daughter. Seemed like he was way older when she was born😅 now I'm pregnant, 2 weeks behind you. Wishing us all the luck ❤
My son was non-verbal until the age of 4. I got him evaluated through the school district. He does have Autism, but after going to pre-school and being taught my the teachers/speech therapists he was talking which was amazing to me. He's 14 now and talks non-stop. Hopefully you get diagnosed soon.

He’s been seeing a speech therapist for the past three weeks now and I’m going to see if he qualifies for early intervention this next week. I’m in Kentucky but you should have a similar program there?! I also have a referral for a developmental pediatrician … they said it could be weeks! I am glad to hear that Noah has made progress as it gives me hope for my little man. Also, congrats on your daughter 💗 my heart is so full for you and your little family *hugs*
This sounds just like my nephew. He has autism. We knew when he couldn’t talk. My sister is still in denial and it sucks because he needs her. I’m so thankful and glad I lm a subscriber because you give me hope that there are parents that actually care and are there for there kid you know ... No one should be ashamed of their child remember guys you the parents are the only people in the world that can take care of your children and protect them ... all they have is you 💕
I didn't talk until I was 4 years old....before that I was a complete mute and my mom had specialists come to the house yet I still wouldn't make a peep....but I'm totally normal now, I speak fine!
So I’m a kindergarten teacher. At first, the kids will freak out. It’s going to happen and it’s okay. It’s scary for a kid to leave the comfort of your own space. What I found helpful as a teacher is I come down to their level and say, “I will never let anything scary or bad happen to you. I promise.” Then we pinkie promise. It will keep happening for about a week and then they start getting used to the routine. It takes a lot of patience but it’s worth it to see them walk into school all by themselves 😍
So great that he is doing better with speech. That is great! My 13 year old son has autism and is nonverbal. He is the best kid in the world 🙂 Sending your family lots of love ❤

I know you’re not asking for advice, but have you tried printing out pictures of common words/objects for Noah? For example he wants to go play outside, but he needs to clean up his toys and put on his shoes first. So you show him a picture of cleaning up toys, putting on shoes, and then one that shows playing outside! It’s great for nonverbal kiddos so they have an idea of what they’re working towards. You’ve done such a wonderful job raising him, I can’t believe he’s already 4!!!
Your county regional center by law has to provide a free evaluation and services! I am an SLP and this is something I share will all parents I work with!!
I highly doubt you will ever see this but my mind is blown. My 5 year old son also struggled when he was little with speech and we got him into a program with our school district to work with him on it. He alssssooo got glasses at 1.5 because his eyes were turning as well! He has since had 3 sets of tubes which has helped his speech sooo much, and has had surgery on both of his eyes. It really interested me that our children both struggled with multiple similar situations and around the same age as well. I have so many questions but maybe I should finish watching the video before I ask them ❤️
Jessi... It makes my heart so happy that even though you don't have a diagnosis you are doing everything you can to help him... And if I see anyone phrase it "do you know what's wrong with him" NO MATTER the diagnosis,there is NOTHING "wrong" with him. He is just different in his own way❤️ I genuinely believe he is going to THRIVE when he starts school!!
This!! As a teacher, more often than not, parents REFUSE to get their kid evaluated. “Oh, he’s FINE”. Um, sir? I may not be an expert but I have been teaching for 20 years. I know what’s typical and what isn’t. The parents’ denial just sets the kids back further!
I am late to the party at commenting but just wanted you to know that I had the exact same reasons for doing a planned c-section the 2nd time and it was night and day difference from the emergency one. It was such a beautiful experience, much better for my anxiety and it helped me breastfeed which I really wanted to do again, and avoided PPD. I will say though, therapy during my pregnancy and after made such a huge difference for me. Anyway, I wish you tons of luck with Amelie! You have nothing to prove to anyone, so do what is best for both of you!
Your son sound exactly like my son! Like to a T. He is farsighted with a +4 in both eyes and he wore his glasses from day one when he was 4. He was also non verbal until we realized his hearing was being effected. He had ear tubes in and his speech dramatically improved. He is now 8 and talks up a storm, but still to this day sometimes says things as he learned/heard them when his hearing was like he was “underwater” they had said. Maybe this could be Noah’s issue too and honestly he never had ear infections either. The fluid never drained properly and thankfully never turned into anything painful for him. I know how hard it is when your child has any issue and I’m so proud of how you are handling this and seem like such a good mother.
My best friend’s baby is around the same age as Noah and has the exact same speech delay it sounds like. Like you can tell they can understand everything you say and want to communicate but can’t get passed a block. But I have faith both Noah and my friends kid will have great happy lives no matter how their speech progresses! Such beautiful great little boys.

My nephew is/was speech delayed. When he went to daycare he picked up SO MUCH!!! He can hold a conversation with you now (I mean as much as a 3 year old can hold a conversation) being around other kids will help. They copy each other!!!
I am currently in grad school to be a school psychologist (someone who works with children with delays and provides assessments/evaluations for children with learning delays). I have learned that early intervention is key! I hope Noah’s evaluation will shed light on his needs and the best way to support him 😊
Jessi, the best thing to do is to get yourself on numerous waitlists for developmental pediatricians. I got on 3 and some were as long as 25 months. I was able to get my son 2 evaluations for ASD (one was a second opinion). OT has been amazing for my son. He gets OT and Speech in early intervention pre-k and while he’s still delayed, he’s making progress.
So I saw this comment a few times but wanted to share my experience as well. My 6 year old had so much fluid in his ears when he was a toddler. I had a recommendation by our Early Intervention team to get his hearing tested. I was confused because he passed his newborn screen. We went to an ENT and ended up finding out about fluid, he had tubes and since then he has FLOURISHED! Fluid builds from sickness, or teething, really anything! And the tubes were super easy for us, and was the best thing we ever did!
Since Noah is starting school soon, you could also tell his school you would like special education done as a parent request, if the other center keeps hanging up on you. The process does take about two months, but they do a cognitive test and academic testing. They can give him all the accommodations and modifications he needs throughout his schooling, and as a parent you have every right in whatever services they are recommending, meaning if you feel like there is something else he benefits from, definitely be the advocate for him! You could even get speech therapy and OT through the school as well! He will have annual goals that is his working towards, and it is completely tailored to him and his needs.
This is so comforting as I have a two year old who basically has everything your son has from the delayed speech the squint eye and he also suffered so bad with reflux it’s good to know it got better for Noah I’m hoping my son is this same x
My sister had a speech delay, so our mom put her in some classes and held her back a year in school (her birthday is in May so she wasn’t that much older than her classmates which was nice), and she has been good ever since!! Good luck ❤️
I have two boy with non verbal sensory processing disorder and autism. One is 12 and the other is 10. My oldest just started talking this past year. My youngest see his brother talking and trys so hard but nothing comes out. I know he will get it one day. I just want to say you guy's are going great. I know some times we get down on our self but I just it's nothing you guy's did or are doing it just happens. I hope you guy's can get someone to help work with you guy's on getting him diagnose. I know this video is a year old, but I’m currently 2 weeks away from giving birth to my second (a baby girl), with a 2.5 year old son who has a pretty intense speech delay (we are doing speech therapy twice a week). I love hearing the way you talk about your son and I feel it all so much. Thank you for being so open! (I also watch your podcast every week❤️❤️)
Loved this! I'm no professional, but, my little brother had severe speech delays as a baby and my other brother and I would talk for him. Turns out his speech delay was because he couldn't process how to speak because he couldn't read lips and see others model it because he had retinol dystrophy and was nearly legally blind. Hopefully the glasses will help him see how to formulate words more accurately and help his development as he heads into school! I'm a teacher in an inclusive classroom and he'll love it! It's a very beneficial space to be in no matter the age :)
My son is 4.5 and SPD has been on a rise due to covid and it is a reversible issue. I felt like I was alone and it is a taboo where I live so im glad that I stumbled upon this video. OT & ST is a godsend.
I was having the same exact situation with my oldest who turned 4 in March. She had a huge burst in speaking. I 100% understand so much what y’all going through. We just agreed to get her screened for autism also b/c she does have issues with sounds, textures, & she has to have certain toys in certain orders all the times.
You're doing so great with Noah. If he is or isn't autistic just saying that my boyfriend is and I've worked with people who are autistic and what's helped a lot of them the most is having great family that actually listens to them and makes space for them not just fits them into the space. And my bf was non vocal for awhile when he was young but he got there because he had a great mom and great teachers. Sorry for the long comment 😅 Love you and good luck with everything ❤
so glad to hear Noah's speech is improving. my cousin is the same way and each day he's getting better (he did get diagnosed with autism) he does speech classes and knows a little sign language. he's also a Leo lol
My daughter is still speech delayed and has some development problems but we have been doing therapy and potty training now! It's so nice to see another parent going through the same thing 💜
I had to step back on some people I was following on RU-vid for awhile to focus on some real life things, but coming back and catching up on everything since the “oh hey guys, yeah ummm I’m engaged and I am pregnant” video through everything now is so great. I am so happy for you Jessi
Girl, get an epidural and do the vbac!!!!!! Vbac was the best thing I EVER did I wish I never had to get a c section. Totally different experience and bond with your baby. It’s such a good feeling and quick recovery too
