Cheickna Traore is a #sprinting #trackandfield champion in #ncaatrackandfield who has a chance to win an Olympic medal in the 200 meter dash. But nobody originally wanted to recruit him. Which is why he used to run college track and field in Division 3.

I think the tide is turning due to channels like this but there is still work to be done as far as getting the message out that track and field is a division-less sport. The more we can get kids to focus on their academics (you need to for many D3 programs) and be patient with their track and field journey, the better off many kids will be. Lose the D1 or bust mentality out of HS. Get good grades, and if you are not a highly recruited super star, go to a good D3 program that WANTS you there and can help you get better. Get a good education. I don’t believe most of D1 and D2 are in the development business. That is usually the case when money (scholarships) are involved. Coach, it would be cool if there was a ranking of D3 programs in terms of how good they are at development. Coaches at that level need more recognition in my opinion.

Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate it. I would also say that much of D1 does develop talent. That's why many athletes in the top D1 programs are now transfers from somewhere else. The most well known programs do coach differently however. But that is because their goal is not only athlete development, but winning national championships. In regards to assessing how athletes develop at various programs that would be a very interesting case study!
