Specifically design for Makers and DIY Home Automation, we check out the NoCAN platform including the canzero which is the the same pinout and form as the MKR1000 - Arduino and runs a SAMD21 and an STM32 to handle the CANBUS connection.
It uses a Subscribe and Publish system over CANbus on CAT5 ethernet cable to create a network of nodes that can be use for sensors or home automation. It can be connect to other systems including Home Assistant via MQTT, Blynk, or REST.

NoCAN was created by Alain Pannetrat and was launched on Kick Starter, Alain has put a lot of work in to this system of the past years creating this open source project.

I'm excited for more of this stuff in the future. Great detailed video :)

I have close to 30 cr2032 powered zigbee devices and it really does become an endless chore rotating batteries. I've always thought about running a bus for power and data, it's probably not worth it in an established Perth house though. I'd definitely put in surplus conduit and wall boxes in a new build though, and would recommend it to anyone else building. Generally one next to every light switch should cover you.

Yeah in a new house it would be a good idea, changing batteries is a pain. This would be very good if the server could run as an addon for home assistant.

Interesting system, thanks for the review. A shame that the MCP2562 CAN driver chip is in short supply so this limits Maker uptake.

At 8:10 if I want a sensor down at the end of my garden I would need to run 2 cables if I want to 'loop' back? Cheers

Yes or make the sensor at the end of your garden the last node, you could use two pairs of one cat 5 to go there and back and you still have 2 pair for the power. I was also going to ask Alain about the possibility of 2 canbus networks running from one Pi master.

@@SparkyJames Thanks, the 2 canbus networks (or more) would be useful, otherwise it could require quite a bit of planning before deployment. use case for me would be pir's and relays for lights around my garden initaly and tied into Home Assistant as burglar alarm. Cheers

😂I know it’s a bit like that in summer, I have on occasion hit myself with a pair of pliers while working and swiping flies away.
