I love it when the instructor works with a bigger sparring partner. That really shows that the technique works. Plus, he put uke down gently like a baby. Fantastic technique and control.
On the contrary I've literally never seen this technique applied in this way during competition or an MMA fight. Blocking their leg is supposed to come first (right after off-balancing them) and mechanically starts everything that makes the throw possible. If you lifted them off the ground already you may as well just do a regular hip throw. Also, this particular technique in no-gi is higher percentage with an overhook than an underhook. It's weird almost every instance of a UFC highlight reel will be with an overhook but no one teaches it with an overhook.
That’s O-Goshi with a lifted leg not harai goshi. The execution of harai doesn’t lift the hips then the leg it’s a sweeping throw with the leg not a lift. It was developed becaus o goshi was prevented due to lack of hip lift or opponent moving off. 👍🏻
By far one of the most sincere and level headed instructor I have ever acknowledged. Hopefully one day I can come up to Canada and train at your gym. Thank for teaching
Judoka here, that's actually a really good harai goshi! So many people sweep the legs with their harai, turning it into an ashi waza. Nice to see a legit hip sweep.
There are some good elements here. Lots of people pointing out this isn't really Harai. Especially since the leg isn't reaping. The really important element missing is the kuzushi. The arms need to be bringing him slightly forward right. Without it, the throw becomes very difficult with a resistant person.
Awesomeness !! I really like the way ya break it down...started following a long time ago and as soon as I did my ankle chasing game got way better !! Appreciate it dude !!
Stop training MMA for a few years now. Been busy with life and children. Now 40 with a bit of chub. However watching these clips are starting to feed my hunger for BJJ. can see myself getting back to it again soon just for fitness and fun. Thank you 🤙🏻
Nice coaching brother Harai goshi - uchi mata - osoto gari are my 3 favourite judo techniques. I actually used them for years in wrestling without ever knowing it came from judo.
I saw someone do this super fast before and as a beginner in mma, I thought it almost looked like a uchi mata on the outside of the legs, but you definitely proved me wrong with this stellar tutorial, thanks man :)
The one thing I learned after doing these is also you can shorted the stance, get under and stiffen the legs before you bend. Takes the weight iff the opponent completely and you dont have to rely on back, grip or folding over as much.
I love how whenever people demonstrate throws they show it on an opponent who is in good balance and never discuss the process of off balancing in order to open the window of opportunity for the throw. The setup is arguably more important than the technique itself. You have to win the hand fight to get a dominant angle or use your superior grips to off balance. No one teaches these concepts as well as Danaher
I liked this alot, got some follow up q's tho: 1) does that triangle foot placement apply to other throws or sweeps? 2) when you are setting up that triangle footing, can't the open also triangulate his feet towards you as well, won't that make it like a 50/50 battle for leverage?
I always watch these shorts 3 times, once for the technique, once more for the background characters trippin, and finally to rewatch the technique cuz I forgot it laughing so hard at the background dudes
I didn't know Samwise Gameshe from Lord Of The Rings did Jiu Jitsu? Super cool bro! We should make Jiu Jitsu rings bro....you know to rule the tournaments! You still got that plug?
