thanks for such a thorough, straightforward, and approachable walkthrough! There are plenty of videos about how "nasty" or "wild" or "mental" the BIA is. There aren't as many that actually walk through the parameters in a systematic way. It's super helpful
Came here to say this. Too many module videos are just people getting high on how far out and alien sounds they can make, it’s nice to have such a thoughtful breakdown that exposes the entire sound palette without a bias to dialing everything up to 11. I swear they should outlaw wave folders, people abuse them too much.
Recently picked the BIA up and has quickly become my main percussion module. Thanks for reminding/explaining a few of the functions that I have overlooked.
I watched this clip like a thousand times. And will carry on. It's so insanely packed with inspiration and made me understand this little guy a loooong way before i finally bought it. Thank you so much for that! I wish i could give you all the thumbsups i own.
Super helpful video, thank you so much - a great explanation and demonstration of this module - you've just pushed me over the edge to get one! Thanks so much for this great vid.
Interesting; I know it gets a lot of love for being "a whole drumkit in one" when being heavily CV'd (Eg the Rubadub video), which is great, but as this video shows, it's actually a fantastic general "drum sound" creation module and it'd be amazing to have x8 triggered by an A-157 as a full drumset.
You only can bring with you ONE youtube clip to that lonely island you have to spend the rest of yout life on? ThIS clip is my number one choice. Cant stop watching. Beautiful explaination. Awesome sequence. Stunned.
Just got this. Although I don't find the actual sound to be anything special, the range of sounds from this is what makes it what it is, imo. Complements the rest of my oscillators very nicely as well. Quite expensive for what it sounds like, but I can see this is going to be a lot of fun. Great overview by the way, which is of no surprise :)
Awesome module. Only thing to mention is you'll probably need some vcas to get a more precise modulation. Apart from that it could be made by Sauron ("one module, to rule them all").
Is there a way to work around it with eq, or is it just a part of using the module? Edit: Or would adding a quick attack vca help soften out the clicking?
The VCA solution would work. EQing may pull out frequencies you want to keep. The attack knob further to the right also works, it's just not a smooth transition between "clicking" and "not clicking" (sadly). I think this is only a minor flaw in an otherwise storming module however
sorry, I thought I mentioned it... maybe it was in the BIA video... anyway the knobs (and switches!) work as offsets. So any CV you patch to the corresponding jack is added to the knob/pot/switch position.
what I dont undertand is that this module has only one out. so it can produce only one sound at the time. how is it possible then that when you connect all the cables it sounds as 6 or more different drum sounds at the same time? Even if you don't touch the module, (?). thx
@ 7:00 I'm using a steady 16th note clock (probably coming from Tempi, but for a trigger/clock, source doesn't really matter) to the Trig input. I'm using that same clock to drive a Voltage Block, which is sending one sequence to the Harm input. I believe the latter parts of the video are essentially the same, but using more channels from the Voltage Block.
No, but the Decay at maximum is pretty long, but far from indefinite. That is one of the cooler features of the Manis, however the Manis sounds VERY different. IMO, it's more of a percussive lead or percussive bass sound and the BI is more electronic drums. Both? ;)
dang this thing is badass.. wish I could get some help getting going with mine. Ive got a dsi pro2 and synthstrom deluge to control it. bit of a noob, a bit intimidated by this beast....
If you wanted all those sounds to be heard simultaneously, then yes. But the way the module is designed, you can find all those sounds via control voltage, so using a sequencer like the Voltage Block, where you can have multiple voltages, you could sequence those sound changes. I think you could do quite a lot with just two BIA and a Voltage Block. But it’s a obtuse way to make straightforward drum patterns/sounds. If you want a more typical drum/drum machine sound and patterns, I’d go with specific kick/snare/hat modules, or an actual drum machine. The real power of the BIA is how it fluidly transform between percussion sounds, no so much “create a typical drum pattern with one module”.
