Derek tells us all about the non contact voltage testers to see if gas engineers need to be using them or not. He shows us the correct operation of them to gas safe technical bulletin 118 and the HSE guidance note 38 on the use of non contact voltage testers to carry out the safe to touch test. THIS IS NOT THE SAFE ISOLATION TEST.

I don't know why sparks getting upset . I used both testers when changing sockets First to see voltage and wiring correct then listen for beeping to stop when I turn breaker off. Any tester used right is better than nothing. Great vid.

I have several and I find them very handy. They are not top of the range in testers but they have their place. They give an indication of faulty electrical items. You would then use your more accurate test equipment to test and repair the fault. I will continue to use mine.

Great video. The round three pin tester to check if the socket is correctly wired do not usually show if the neutral and earth are swopped over. Easy enough to test if this is so.

Good stuff Derek! Spot on!! I use quite a lot of electrical testers for different types of testing. I have to say my fluke 116 is one of the best tools in my kit and gets the most use. I do use a non-contact voltage come current tester and find it very useful. The key is to understand what you are doing. Understand how to use your tools and how to interpret the results. Use your tester to prove what is working and what is not. Also for me I like to switch on and off, on what ever I'm testing - which should correlate on the tester. There's a lot for new guys to take on board nowadays!!

Voltage you can think of as pressure. In fact way back in the day some called it pressure or electrical pressure. So think of it like the pressure in a pipe. There is no flow (current) of gas until the pipe is opened somewhere to allow the gas to flow. Current is the flow of electricity. So think of it like this. There’s pressure in the wire (voltage) and when you flick on a switch (which is like an isolation valve) it allows the electricity (current) to flow through the wire to the other end. Voltage = Pressure Current = Flow Now I’m on a roll. Resistance = Restriction to flow or pressure due to a smaller pipe or partial blockage. Resistance may reduce either voltage (pressure) or current (flow) depending how the circuit is wired.

What’s that orange plug called the one you put in the socket? You are teaching us to be safe! Much appreciated. Thanks Derek 👍🏻 Asian Jon. Training.

Great video derek as always. I’m sure most of the ones that just go red I.e the fluke voltage stick can only pick up as low as 90 volts. I always used the fluke voltage stick until you done the video for when your son was registering with gas safe and had the over the phone test they asked if he had a non contact voltage stick that could pick up below 50 volts. Purchased a few of the very one you used in the video lol. Always use and will continue to use.

Some good points made, The non contact voltage pen is a handy tool to have but should never be used for safe isolation as you rightly said, they work by detecting the magnetic field generated when the voltage is present. I have one for checking old cables that are redundant , but I do other check s as well . Non contact voltage pens are not dangerous if you know what they are used for I thrust them a dam sight more than a neon screwdriver. As for the plug in socket tester again a handy tool to have but the loop impedance test is not a true test as it doesn’t tell the value as such and the RCD test is just a fusional test the same as the test button on the RCD . But if the RCD had seised then RCD test on the plug tester won’t work and the can be a big problem if the RCD is saturated with DC current leaking into the electrical system. The proving unit you showed in the video the are one or two available the has a touch pad for proving non contact voltage pens as well as your voltage indicator. I think megger makes one ? . And your. Voltage indicator has a single probe test function , if you touch the positive probe on to something you suspect is live it will beep and the lightning bolt will be on . Although some voltage indicators have this function not all models do . I am not sure if yours has or not as I don’t know what brand it is . Great video with some valid points well made 👍

They are a great fault finding tool. I wedge them into the gap between a gas valve and the power lead supplying the valve then put manometer onto p1, you can then see if the gas valve gets power and if the solenoid opens (seen by pressure dropping on manometer). Wouldn’t be without one.

Caught your show, too bad it's from a year ago or so. You mentioned Electricians, and Gas Engineers. I was an Electrician in a Chemical Plant, Hydrogen Sulfide, Hydrogen Cyanide, Methane, and more in the gas streams. We wore "4 Gas" Monitors, O2, LEL, H2S, and LEL in the same unit and they were bump tested every day before use. Bonding was common when pipes were being opened at Flanged Fittings, it was to eliminate the chance for a spark to occur, the spark could ignite the gas. (The Gas was Isolated, but not Purged). Non-Sparking tools were required (this was all done by Mechanics in Breathing Air, but Electricians provided/installed the bonding straps before the work began). If your procedures/regulatory agency permits the use of a Non-Contact Voltage Tester, I'm sure they are confident in them for your specific use. Nothing is foolproof. I've seen multimeters fail to read voltage when voltage was present and the meter correctly set, yet work again later. We had Voltage Testers that were recalled because the Batteries needed for them to work weren't making a good connection, though we did not see that issue, the manufacturer recalled them. But good techniques in using Meters or Testers help eliminate issues with them. We had AC and DC Control Circuits, I've seen an Electrician testing for AC where DC was used, and I told him to switch his meter to DC, and it was present. We had a few Meters that had an AC/DC range that detected the voltage and identified which type it was, and the meters also had AC or DC Ranges. I've seen, in person, a Water Meter carrying the Neutral Currents for a home because the Neutral at the Weather Head was open and the Breaker Panel grounded on the Water Line near the meter. I used a Clamp Ammeter on the Water Line, it was carrying the full neutral load. The Weather Head Neutral and Breaker Panel Grounding were quickly repaired. Testing is good, I agree, but the voltage can occur after the test was done. Nothing is perfect, but those Jumpers or Bonding Cables will reduce the chance of harm if the Gas Lines are Metal. I wonder if your regulatory agency permits Bonding the Customer Side Pipes to a good ground to eliminate customer side voltage potentials while you're working on the meter? Nice video, thanks for the effort.

AC is always althernativing and electrons are constantly flowing even when off. The voltage stick picks up ElectroMagneticForce which surrounds the cables.

hi derek, first off im a spark so dont have a go. voltage dosen't flow, voltage is the pressure, current is what flows, same as gas flows with pressure behind it. there are two live conductors in most domestic CCTs line and neutral conductors. volt sticks will only pick up line conductors, so we'll use your gas meter example, if the pipe work is earthed (that could be any earth connected to the system) and the pipe work go's live due to a line fault, the MCB should pop, your bigger problem is the pipework going live due to a neutral fault, a volt stick would not indicate that, while the pipework is at ground Potential, you won't get a shock, however if you disconnect the gas meter without the clamps, one side could raise above ground potential, resulting in an electric shock, so clamps are neccessary. the best way to test for neutral fault would be a clamp on ammeter, current would be shown to be flowing. im not saying don't use a volt stick, however just because the volt stick indicates no voltage, that dosen't mean the pipework is not live.

As gas engineers not electricians we use the non contact voltage detectors because we are not electricians. We follow gas safe technical bulletin 118a which says we should use them. We have two choices don’t use one or use one it’s only for our safety and nothing else but thanks for your comment I appreciate it 👍🏻
@ukfamilylife
@ukfamilylife Год назад
@@tomkatgastraining thats why i said "i'm not saying don't use them" as i've read 118a as well, but being aware of neutral fault is really important, considering the increase in diverted neutral currents, keep safe everyone.

Jon-Paul Ward it’s a simple device, that can easily be proved to work. I can’t believe all of the grief about it! Combining it with the use of the ‘socket and see’ is good also as a reassurance that it is working. The alternative is spending big money on a Fluke or something similar, which is like a sledgehammer to crack a walnut, when you are specifically talking about “safe to touch”.
