Better than my last trip here in 2003. Didn't bother booking a hotel & just turned up at night. There was some festival that weekend and all the hotels were booked. I spent an hour going into several establishments without luck. Then the rains & thunderstorms began so I took shelter in a local bank front where I was out of the rain. I propped myself up against my backpack & decided to wait till the storm passed. I basically fell asleep & woke up at sunrise when everyone was off to work. Great free nights accommodation.

That Beer Lao does indeed look bloody good! It’s available here in Australia, but hard to find. I will definitely try it. Just consume it in moderation Eddy. In your last livestream you drank 3 big bottles. I could see on the label that it has 40 Calories per 100ml and almost 3g of carbs. So 3 big bottles is 768 Calories and almost 60g of carbs plus the dinner you ate that night. Probably all together over 1500 Calories in one sitting. Doing this every day is not very efficient, maybe once a week. Kip it steady!

Eddy...One time I paid a driver/agent to do everything from Vientien to Udon Thani. Well worth it. Never had to walk around, getting confused...as often occurs. But when i travel somebody usually appears and helps me. My.travel "angels". Example...missed plane in U.T. But a younger man helped get to town and into a hotel. This had happened more than once. Thanks for the vds.

About 14 years ago I hired a local driver from Udon Thani for a day trip to Laos. We got to the border I only forgot my passport. So I never bothered I couldn’t be arsed to go back and get it. Looks good though worth a visit.

Eddy, try the dark Beerlao while you are there. It looks like a dark English ale, it's very, very nice and I think you're gonna enjoy it.

If you're heading North best to do so pretty soon before the burning season gets too bad. Luang Prabang is pleasant enough and only a few hours by train, and the villages further up the Mekong are very bucolic. 2 day boat trip from LP back to the Thai border is also a good option. Quite comfortable and they have cold beer. Going South, the 5,000 islands are quite unique but it's a trek to get there and the crowd is mostly a younger one.

Loving these regular vlogs and livestreams keep them coming Eddy, very enjoyable, still getting frosty mornings in the UK, cheers.

That happened to me when I got the transfer van from the border crossing to my hotel and the driver pointed me to this hotel and was the wrong place. Luckily I had a working SIM card and was only 500 metres away

He took you to one of the big hotels near the Thai Embassy, they pay commission to taxi drivers, he knew exactly what he was doing. Always pick up a taxi on the Laos side of the border, and it should be a car not a van.

I cant be the only one in the comments to say this Ed, but Google Maps prevents this occurring. Even OFF line and no sim card. Just 'label' your destination on GM when online so it saves it and follow where you are going when in a cab. I do this all the time. The Beerlao looked mouthwatering I must say. ;-]

I went to a bar here edd nong khai and there were some nice Louis girls very reasonable prices 1000 LT it was so easy getting my visa here I booked a hotel for the a few days then went back. Edd arnt you doing a retirement visa ?

I had the same experience in Vietnam the driver tried to take me to the wrong hotel but I was following along on maps and told the driver you got the wrong hotel.

I've decided to take the train from udon thanni to noch khai, can someone tell me how far us the train terminal to the irish pub, and if there's shared taxis or bus that i can take, as i know a tuk tuk will charge me by the inch not the mile

I work in a hotel. See it at least once a week - people dropped off at wrong hotel. I soon as I get out of taxi I ask the hotel staff if I am at the correct location. Then I unload my luggage.

ran quite smoothly at immigration eddie yes you need passport side photos so they can put it on your visa noticed that laos does take $ dollars more now like vietham better for them but bad for us with exchange rate pound loses it value to $us dollar i prefer to pay in baht or there own currency but they get more value in us $ but its bad for us .
