I love that one guy who shouts when she asks if people like The Kinks. He is WAAAAAAAYYYYY to excited about The Kinks... and I want to meet him and be his friend.
I can't believe she did it again! One of my favourite songs ever, Dave Davies' ultimate ballad, and The Kinks's for the matter, in such a beautiful way. I'm not a huge fan of her own compositions, but when she picks a gem from the past, she knows exactly what to do.
When I listen to this song I can't stop, so I listen to all the versions - including this one, of course. Beautiful songs like this one are not for everybody, so this is a perfect song for Norah. And she kept the drums at the end, yay!!!
I remember first hearing the Kinks version and almost being moved to tears, especially the 'strangers on this road we are on' line. There was not almost after hearing this. Brilliant!
Wonderful cover. It's a tribute for all the critics out there. She has a wonderful soulful interpretation and I am sure Dave was honored. It's fabulous to know that someone so popular actually loves and listened to a Kinks song that is quite obscure. GREAT!
Of course it's not the original, that's why it's a cover. She does an excellent job with it, respecting the feel of the original but adding her own touch. Lovely.
Been loving the Kinks my entire life -- so much so, they bring tears to my eyes! Love Norah Jones so much too. She does an amazing job on Dave's song here. An amazing song in itself.
Excellent interpretation. Just the fact that she is doing this song is proof that she is a fan. That's enough in my book. All the haters need to realize that when you read the captions Kinks "cover" that that's what you're going to get. I bet you all hate live tracks too and only listen to studio cuts. "Till The End of The Day" live is fucking amazing and yet it sounds nothing like the "original"
it's a travesty that crowd didn't immediately erupt when she sang those first words. everybody ought to know this song by heart and they should've been singing along with her!
All this discussion about which is better shouldn't be the point. If you're a Nora Jones fan, you'll love it, a Kinks fan, you'd prefer them. She has her style, and they had theirs. Not better/worse, just different.
I don't mean to be Norah's spokeperson, but it seems like she only covers songs where she couldn't possibly sound like the original singer (this one, ACDC, Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, etc.). There's almost a tacit understanding that "I'm not trying to sound like the original, I just love the song and want to pay homage to it." I usually love her cover, check out the original, and find the original is even better. But the original almost always is.
Agreed. This song was not meant to be sung by a voice like hers. Kinda funny how certain songs can be better when sung by people with less vocal talent. Call it the Janis Joplin effect.
Elitist is not an insult, even though you intended it to be. It's bad because it lacks all of the ethereal disattachment of the original. It's flat. It has no soul, it has been taken out of time and out of place. She doesn't feel the lyrics. You can't over-embellish a song so personal. Backing choir? Excuse me? Also her voice is like rusty saw.
