Why would a drummer play a drum set, then get a sampler that plays samples of actual drums? The 3P rocks because it doesn’t play drum sounds. It plays synthesized sounds. It’s truly expanding one’s pallet. Not just adding more drums to drums you already have.
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 года назад
I couldn't agree more. It's amazing how many sounds there are and ones that you can create, too. That's where people I've met in the past didn't seem to get instruments like the 3P. It's a very literal minded approach. "But that's not a drum set." Exactly. Cheers, Malcolm. Thanks for watching!

@@424Recording I started using samplers (DM Pro) playing the casinos of Las Vegas 21 yrs ago. Not for the sound, but because employee parking was a mile away, and I drove a pickup truck. Everything I used had to move in one trip on a hard cart. Plus, every casino has great p.a.'s. Stick pillows in a kick to bring stage volume down and it sounds like a cardboard box. Turn a sampler down and its still a cannon, just not as loud. I used a snare, floor tom, Hh and ride/crash. The rest was a multipad & kick trigger. People would ask all night long: wheres all those sounds coming from? I only see 2 drums up there. An effective drummer is like a magic act. Making very complex/exact/mathematical look very simple.
@adamfrank8768
@adamfrank8768 3 месяца назад
It's not meant for that. It would be difficult to do a drum session on one. It's a synthesizer, and it allows you to create the beat. Everyone is allowed to believe what's the best equipment, but he suggests it over a Roland type keyboard or component that's allot more money. The important thing to highlight is that this is not a drum kit it works great with the edm world and not so much drums.
@malcolmbliss777

@adamfrank8768 I have excellent results using the Nord in my music. I play it with an acoustic kit, or with a sampler with acoustic samples, but I don't ever have a need to play an acoustic kit and acoustic samples anymore than I'd need 2 acoustic drum sets.

Another thing that helps in getting hi-hat sounds is setting the dynamic decay so that lighter and harder strikes change the decay length of the sounds. For example it can be set so that a hard strike has a long decay and a light strike has a short decay. What isn't obvious when you read the manual is that this changes the decay time of ongoing sounds, so with this configuration a light strike can cut off the decay of a harder one. There are a number of presets that use this but it took me a while to figure out exactly what setting caused it. Since changing the decay time (or other parameters) changes all the ongoing tones you can also emulate a high hat more directly with a pedal controller that can be programmed to change MIDI CC values. I'm using a MIDI Baby pedal for this. With that controller not only can I shorten the decay times when I put my toe down but I can also sweep other parameters, in different ranges/directions at the same time, so also changing, say, spectra and resonance makes a more complex and interesting, if not strictly realistic effect. I would demonstrate this but my Nord Drum 3p I got for Christmas had a less sensitive pad (and no per-pad sensitivity adjustment) and had to go back to Sweetwater for warranty repairs, and for some reason getting Swedish drum synth parts during a global pandemic is taking a while! Sigh.

Very cool video, I'm in the market for an electronic sample pad, but had not considered the Nord due to the synthesiser aspect. I was thinking it was overkill and not something I'd use as I'm only really looking for the ability to sample mostly organic drum sounds. I was thinking the Roland SPD SX would be better suited, but it's been on the market for much longer so maybe the Nord design is more advanced. What's your take on this and have you ever tried the Roland?

Yes! I really dig the 3p sound. That's the only Nord/Clavia instrument I've played but their reputation was well-known to me. The way the 3p works and sounds is heads above the other similar drum pads out there; it seems under the radar to me but I also don't know much about what people are using. I'll have to look into the other Nord offerings. Thanks for watching!

I personally can’t recommend Yamaha DTX Multi12 enough. I also considered buying the Nord but picked up Yamaha because of higher number of pads and acoustic drum sounds. It is sample based though and has very limited memory to store custom ones but overall I’d say it’s the most expressive and fun to use drum pad I ever tried Alesis and Roland pads feel more like sample launchers than drums

I looked into the Yamaha, Alesis, and Roland ones, too, wiencheck, but something about the Nord caught my ear. I haven't done too much sample design with the Nord yet, but it seems like there's a good amount of user created sound slots. The extra pads on the Yamaha are awesome. I think what it was for me in the end were the demo videos of the Nord kits. I like a lot of these digital sounding kits and drum machines. Cheers!

I forgot about this. Now I want it again, lol. And so what if one of the reasons I consider this over other makes is because it's red, lol. And the sounds seem more interesting and there looks to be much adjustability in crafting your own sounds, which would be super fun and useful to me. Say Dude, did you ever pick up the SansAmp reissue? The one I got in 1991..(?)...maybe 1992; I used to remember when I got it, oh, my aching, decaying brain...Still works like new. Hope you're well. Ultimately, I would get two of these to trigger superior drummer 3.0 with an additional kit. If you want to play jazz stuff, try using one Nord 3p to trigger all the ride articulations. The dynamic response is sick. Using this for electric sounds is the best. But is you already have an electric kit and trigger SD3, adding this for the ride or snare articulations gets the realism factor way out there.

Yeah, re: Nord 3p size. It's about the size of a notebook but maybe a little longer and wider toward the controls. I looked into those other units, too, and found the Nord to be the most compelling, especially the way that it produces the sounds. The engine is dynamic and a synthesizer at heart: it's super reactive and fun to play. KT-10 ftw! Have fun and happy recording!

Stupid noobie questions but do those scuff marks rub off easily or do they stay on the pads? Also can you give specifics on the Roland kick pedal you're using & how it's connected? Also since your using the kick pedal I take it you're just triggering the kick on one of the pads? OR do you get to trigger the kick (or whatever sound) separately with your foot, leaving the six pads assignable to other sounds? So basically you can trigger 7 sounds??? (Not sure if you understand what I mean). Oh , & great video btw.... you've covered some points I didn't yet see on other reviews...
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! I watched all the other vids on it and tried to bring some new ideas. I'm glad it helped. I'm not sure if the scuffs will come off. They wipe off a bit with a finger but I haven't tried to make them disappear completely. That would be a good question for Nord and if they recommend any type of cleaning solution. In terms of the kick, I've got the KT-10. A lot of the other vids recommend this one and I love it. The kick gets plugged into the kick input on the Nord using an instrument cable. It triggers the #1 pad (which depends how you have the layout set) which is the kick sound in most kits. You can see at the end of the video that you can hit the pedal or the pad to trigger the sound. You still only have 6 sounds, but the option to trigger one of the pads additionally with the pedal. I hope this helps!

This is $1200.00. I don't get why anyone would spend that kind of money to use a drum synthesiser to just make regular drum sounds. You could save your money and do that with a $250 Alesis. This is best used to make more electronic sounds.

it was originally 699 if i recall and then nord for whatever reason skyrocketed the price to 1200. either they dont have too many units and cant produce anymore bc of part shortage or just test pricing to see how much people would stull buy it. if there was any plans for a drum 4, i doubt it with the 1200 price of 3p. no one is even looking at it except for really niche users that want a synth with drum pads.

I use a "MIDI Solutions Event processor" to change every note 60 value from channel 16 to channel 10, 62 to channel 11 ... to record the 6 pads on seperate channels on my Polyend Seq. Quite complicated, maybe there's a better way that 242 found with his Digitakt, but works for me. The Nord Drum 3P can RECEIVE MIDI in different channels without any extra stuff though.
