I just bought my stage 3 and have been watching your videos practically every day. I have to say if it wasn't for you I'd be completely lost. You've helped me so much! I plan on watching every one until I've completed your whole series on the stage 3. If you have more videos than just on youtube please let me know. Thank you so much for your help! Hi Timothy! These are very kind words indeed and it means a lot. You asked if there are more videos. Yes, a LOT more video lessons are available in my full-featured course I sell called "Master the Nord Stage 3" available at www.mykeystomusic.com There, I take you through the entire instrument from A to Z and have quite a few lessons not included here on RU-vid and/or updated in a way that is more relevant than anything on my RU-vid channel. Best of all, you can watch at your own pace without all the ads and marketing speak too typically found on RU-vid. The course engine tracks your progress, provides handy links under each lesson and offers you more direct access to me if you ever get stuck on something. I can't tell you how many personalized videos I've made for students if and when they get stuck on specific issues etc. *Please consider these options if you're looking for more:* ✅ www.mykeystomusic.com ("Master the Nord Stage 3" with over 85 lessons and 11 hours of videos training) ✅ www.patreon.com/mykeystomusic (for donations and behind the scenes updates related to the course and the channel)

Hello Ron! Well, that is a mightly fine compliment! The truth is, I've never spoken to anyone from Clavia/Nord and there is no affiliation whatsoever. I just picked the brand as the platform for my channel and did a bunch of videos because I love music and wanted to share what I've learned on my journey. In many ways, I like not being sponsored/affiliated so that I can remain neutral and honest about things and it allows me to be critical if need be. I've also used Nord since the Electro 3 days (switching from Roland). I found myself to be the kind of musician that constantly tweaks things on the fly so Nord boards speak to me in how I like to perform. Yes, I still enjoy the other brands too but the moment I heard the first Electro and its ability to imitate the Rhodes way back in the day, I was forever hooked. Thanks for stopping by!

Only thing I don’t get is why you they didn’t add customizable split points to any key.

@MyKeysToMusic Год назад
Thank you!
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic Год назад
@@nikomalek88 A lot of people wonder the same thing. We're not really sure why they did this but I have a guess. 1) They may have wanted it to be as easy as possible to assign a split. Having less options makes it easier to do that and less screens and buttons to fiddle with during assignment. Also, having flexible split keys means it could get confusing for the user on how to assign zones. There would be issues with the user assigning a zone in the wrong area simply because they picked the incorrect keys to split on. It would make for a slightly more confusing interface potentially. Then again, maybe with enough thought, they could come up with a way to split anywhere, still have 4 zones, and make it easy for the user to program? 2) The split points illuminate in the dark - this is a nice feature and is absent on most all other keyboards. I wonder if allowing any key to split would also mean they'd have to install an LED light for every key? Of course, the answer is yes. So, the additional expense on that alone could have been a deal-breaker. And it's not just the extra lights to purchase, but the extra labor to install and test them. And then, if even a single light goes out somewhere along the way, the owner is going to send it off for repair, which is expensive on both ends of that equation both for the person fixing it and the musician having to wait for it to get fixed. In other words, with more part complexity, you introduce more long-term fragility (more things that can go wrong). And with the keyboards still being made by hand, the inclusion of parts must be one of those long-drawn-out meetings around the design table with tough decisions to be made balancing features with feasibility. That could explain why they don't have motorized drawbars. 🤷🏻‍♂ With that said, it would still be nice to have split options for any key haha!!! Just because it's hard to make the cookies, doesn't stop us from wanting them right? 🍪

First a big thank you for all the how to's. My primary goal was lightening the load from a Roland GX 700. Several months back after watching the Layers, Splits I decided to give the Stage 3 76 Hp a try. At the time my set up was a Roland Gx700 & an SK2. Synths were not a must have, but I got the Stage 3 since it had the Organ engine, & weighted keys for pianos, EP's, etc -keeping in mind that I may be able to get away with 1 keyboard once fluent with the interface. I've always liked the Roland's ability to have 4 voicing samples at the ready with (4 sliders,) where I could instantly bring up any of the 4 for accents, or blend. As a fresh 70 yrs (ouch) you could say I'm old school. The challenge with the Nord is the interface & understanding the differences in terminology SONGS, LIVE MODE, PROGRAMS. I'm still a little foggy on Programs (they pull up already present samples/voices,) Song Mode -having 5 voices, but you'd only play that voice w/out the other 4 & so on .....I have selected some voices from Piano, & Organ, done keyboard splits, used the Morph wheel to bring the volume up/down -but it's frustrating to start saving & discover it doesn't work as intended & then lose myself when trying to re trace the steps & get frustrated to the point where I listed it ,got an offer, & then thought I'd revisit the process & give it some serious time. I'm sure it would improve the more I do it before deciding to keep or not given my simpler needs than what it's capable of. In a simple scenario - Lets play The Letter (Cocker version) Selecting a piano & wanting horns for that chorus part only. Another ex - Black Magic Woman -wanting the organ & EP for the whole tune but in varying volumes (thinking I can use the Morph wheel to increase/decrease volume on each in opposite directions.) Now I'm at point where I'd delete some samples to make room for others, along with saving some patches & confused .With all the song slots could I just create a "song " The Letter" & have that set up ? continuing same with other songs ? & are they SONGS, Live Mode< etc ??? When I'd want more parts or 2 frm same engine I'd use Panel B in addition -then switch to either A & B or Turn one off. Am I getting close ?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 3 года назад
Hello! Congrats on digging and at 70 no less. A musician once said (or maybe it was my High School music teacher that said it), "I'm so happy I didn't go into sports because professional athletes have a short span in life where they can perform at their peak. Musicians on the other hand only improve with time, able to perform their instrument at the highest of levels going well into their 80s and 90s and beyond..." So, these concepts are quite confusing for most that are new to Nord. The key here is to know that Live Mode and Song Mode don't store sounds on their own. They are merely pointers to existing programs. A program is the only way to save settings on a Nord keyboard. So, if you want to create a song that has an organ and piano, you'd first create a program for that. Then you can create a song list that POINTS to that program. This is both a good thing and a bad thing depending on how you look at it. It's good in that if you want to create a generic program that always has a piano and organ at the ready, then you can use that program in multiple songs without having to recreate the wheel each time. But, it's also bad if you want something specific for a song, you have to first create a program and then reference that program in your song list. Not a huge deal, but not exactly what people are expecting out of the box. Live mode is similar except that with Live mode you don't have to push the "store button" and your sounds are in a constant state of flux. If you move any knob whatsoever while in live mode, the live mode settings stick and there is no undo. You could consider taking the course I offer at www.MyKeysToMusic.com where these concepts are explained in a little more detail in their own lesson. It may help with this process and give you a start and an end to learning all this. Thanks for your comment and congrats again on your Stage 3! By the way, the 4 slider concept is fully utilized with the Nord Wave 2 keyboard. Wish they had this for the Stage, but ya, they get it now too since the Wave 2 is their newest. It makes a big difference to have sliders instead of knobs I think.

My Keys To Music Before receiving your reply I did dive in to create new programs with splits on an existing A25 & A21 programs One was for the song Black Friday, I put a clavinet on the lowest split (E-E)along with some synth on Panel A to fatten it up. Both are controlled with Morph wheel. On panel B I have a Wurly with a little synth patch to give it some bite. I did similar with EP & B3 in another program (A21) Saved as in their slots & renamed !! Your mentioning the wave2 got me wondering, but the preference for pianos & organ knocked that out. I have my Hammond Sk2 & while the synth samples are borderline, it’s 2 keyboards & always having a b3 ready cover my bases. I think I’m on the way & will keep diving to get more comfortable with the architecture & trials. Your videos are clearly the best out there. Well thought out & presented. You may need a bourbon bar to go with coffee fund.

@@MyKeysToMusic Oh don't get me wrong Mark, I love the board. This is my third Nord, Electro 3 61 (sold), and Electro 6D73. To your point, compared to Yamaha, Roland, Kurzweil, splits and layers on Nord are kind of outside the box but I get it. With so many hands-on knobs for each engine, I can see why they did it this way. The only thing I really wonder about is why does Nord have set split points. I'm sure it's an architecture thing. I also have a Roland RD800 and I can have four zones split anywhere on the keyboard. Not a complaint as much as a curiosity. Going through your synth section tutorial. It appears the synth display info is different to a minor degree as well as the panel layout. Excellent videos also btw.
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 2 года назад
@@ldifalco2010 Thank you for your reflections and I tend to agree with them! To your observation on set split points - people mention that a lot as a limitation. At the same time, others have said they like the fixed points because they are accompanied by an LED light which allows you to easy see the split point while performing in the dark/low light conditions - a feature not available on other boards. And yes, when I first made the videos for RU-vid, I was using the original panel layout on a Stage 3 HP. The panel layout has since changed and I have recreated most of these lessons in the Pro course I sell at www.MyKeyToMusic.com. I invite you to check out the pro course as not only is it more relevant and much more updated than anything here on RU-vid, it also offers several "exclusive" lessons not available on RU-vid. In any case, that explains why you see the differences. In fact, I made a video about this very topic where they changed the panel and configuration between Stage 3 models over time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE---KaUGMb67U.html

Great work on all these Nord Stage 3 videos. Though I have plenty of background with synths, I finally splurged on the Nord Stage 3 compact, and your info is helping get to grips with it (the keyboard as a whole) a lot more quickly than just the manual. Being mostly a synth guy, I'm a little disappointed with a couple aspects of the synth/sample sound engine (no sustain on the amp envelope???), but really being a performance synth for PLAYING (versus sequencing or setting up some incredibly complex mods in a matrix), it's not a big problem. Think one of your first videos I saw was the Baba O'Riley tutorial, which I was pretty impressed with. Didn't learn until last year some time that Pete just did that whole opening part with some Lowrey home organ. I had always assumed he had some meticulously sequenced, multitracked ARP 2600 thing he put together for the song, but no...not the case.
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic Год назад
Hello @ProckGnosis Thanks for your thoughtful comment here. First, congrats on your Nord Stage 3! There is sudo sustain by moving the knob all the way to the right, but yes, there is no dedicated sustain knob (and there really should be). They do include the knob on the Nord Wave 2, incidentally. And yes, the Stage 3, Wave 2 and Lead A1 are all performance-based stage pianos and synths that beg to be tweaked mid-song, and they really shine at that. Like you, I was shocked to hear that Pete did that with a simple Lowrey organ but I think he tweaked the speed on it (marimba). When I made the first video, I didn't realize how it was originally created. I later learned how he did it, which was interesting. Also, I made a "part 2" which I think came out even better than the first if you haven't already seen it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pYelOuB-G3w.html Continue to enjoy your Nord Stage 3 and if there are more questions, you know where to find us. @ProckGnosis
@ProckGnosis Год назад
@@MyKeysToMusic I'm finding some workarounds for the lack of set-able sustain level. I can bake it into the sample, or I can use both "A" and "B" with almost the same patch, and have "A" decay into a sustain level set with "B". It's not ideal, but it's better than nothing. But...when I compare this to the OVERAGE of full ADSR envelopes on the Hydrasynth, it does leave me scratching my head a bit why Nord went this way. And btw, you let your inner prog/AOR rock geek out quite a bit with your band references (many of which I was into as well as a young'un, I gotta say). Keep up the good work. Cheers!

@@ChapmanMusic This is a common question that I wish I had the answer to! Summer NAMM is right around the corner and a NAMM show is sometimes when things like this get announced. But it feels too early to announce a Stage 4? What about a Nord Stage 3 EX? Let's have a look at their release history for the Stage which over the years which seems to be on a quicker and quicker pace between releases the further into the future we go: Musikmesse April 2005: Clavia announces the Nord Stage NAMM 2011: Clavia announces the Nord Stage 2 NAMM 2015: Clavia announces the Nord Stage 2 EX May 4, 2017: Clavia announces the Nord Stage 3 It's now June of 2019. What would your guess be?? I really have no idea what to expect and I'm sure there are only a large handful of people on planet earth that do. Wish I could help here! Great question though and good luck on your timing decision. I can tell you that their resale value appears to hold up well in most cases all things considered.

Great video. Thanks for the explanation. Seems a bit odd though. 4 zones with only 3 sound sources.

Thanks, Paul! Well, technically speaking, there are two panels (A and B) so you actually have up to 6 sounds from 3 engines. But I see what you are saying, with the fact that there more available zones in a 3 split configuration than there are unique engines to fulfill those zones. I find that I rarely have all 6 options executed in a single program but handy on those times when you really need it.

@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 4 года назад
Haha - I had to laugh with you on this Erick - and I completely agree. It just goes to prove that "it's all relative." As another example of this, the amount of synth engines/options/arpeggiator selections that come with the free program "Garage Band" in a standard Mac would in-fact give most of the modern keyboards available a run the money. Yet, I find most musicians get hung up on the idea of bringing a laptop to the live gig. I've tried it myself a few times - just can't get used to it. Love Mainstage though for use at home. In fact, I used Mainstage last year to teach a bunch of elementary school kids the different sounds they can make from a simple $50 keyboard controller and a laptop. Their eyes were all "wide open" (as you can imagine). Thanks for your comment today - it's easy to quickly forget the power of the computer and a piece of software like Mainstage in today's modern music-making apparatus when you've been accustom to using actual hardware boards for live performances for the last 30 years. 😄

@@dennisfreemanbuddy Thanks for your question and this is the place for it! Here are a few things: 1) If you don't think you need panel B, you can leave it as-is and just not have it being activated. Push both Panel A and B buttons at the same time toggle between both panels being activated or one panel activated at a time. 2) You can simply turn off all sound engines on panel B (Organ, Piano, and synth too). This is sort of the long way around to do this but it will work. The best way is #1. 3) If you want to reset the synth engine only for just panel B, you can so that using the "Synth Init" option found either under the "Unison" button at the top middle are of the synth section. This removes all settings of the synth back to a default setting. Hope that helps!

@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 3 года назад
@@luvjammin04 I now see what you are asking... You want to split two programs. You can't do that exactly. The programs are made up of settings for all 3 engines at once so a program is more of a collection of sounds from each engine X 2 panels. The program also includes all the split information as well. So, what you have to do instead is first split the keyboard. Then you decide which individual piano, organ, and synth preset you want from each panel and then save that there. Here's a common workflow. For example: 1) Find a program you want on the left side of the split. Take a note of the following: Panel A Organ (if used) Panel A Piano (if used) Panel A Synth (if used) Panel B Organ (if used) Panel B Piano (if used) Panel B Synth (if used) 2) Then do the same for the program you want on the right side of the split. 3) Then you can navigate to an empty program at the back of your program list. You can then individually select the engines that were used on the left and right and build up your program from scratch. This is also a great learning exercise and will have you well on your way. Alternatively, you can select the program you want on the left side of the split. Then split the keyboard and select what you want on the right side by referring to the other program. This will be slightly less work perhaps than the other way. Sorry, there isn't a simpler way to do this! 🙈

@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 2 года назад
Hello @Yeny Ramos Thanks for the question and sorry or the delay. You used the word "program" here and I think you meant "panel." So, if I'm understanding your question correctly, the answer is no. Sure, you can split the keyboard 3 times making 4 zones. However, once you make a split, it splits for both panels A and B and you don't get the choice in that. So, you cannot have a split in one panel and no splits in the other. If I didn't understand your question correctly, please feel free to ask it another way. Thanks!

Hello @Santiago Belgrano thanks for your question. Unfortunately, you can only have two independent synth/sample sounds at the same time with the Stage 3, (one on Panel A and one on Panel B). You can however make another program and use seamless transitions to switch between programs smoothly. I have an example of this on my paid Patron post where I use 3 programs to pull off the song "Mr. Blue Sky" from ELO. ELO uses 3 keyboardists on stage so it's already a handful. For this song, you need more than two synth sounds so I use the seamless transitions to move back and forth etc. www.patreon.com/posts/elo-mr-blue-sky-47503116?

Thank you very much for your video! Just to make sure: is it possible to have a bass sample in the left hand and a piano and string layer in the right hand?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 5 лет назад
Hi Marian. Glad the video helps. So, yes this is possible! You would assign the bass sample from the sample/synth engine in the left hand and for the right hand, you would assign a piano from the piano engine. Then on panel B, you would assign a string layer to the right hand and then assign the keyboard to play both panel A and B at the same time. This would give you the result of having a bass on your left and a piano layered with strings on the right. This seems to be a common scenario for people and one that the Electro 6 really can't provide out of the box because you can only have one synth sound playing at the same time on the Electro 6. If you're curious about how you'd set up a bass in the left hand, I created this video which does that. Granted, in this video I demonstrate how to use the Extern function but it's a similar idea: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-72jPR9LZUG8.html Now, there is a crafty workaround where technically you could make your own sample with a bass in the left hand and a string patch on the right and have that entire thing play out through an Electro 6 using the one synth engine. But, that is a lot of work and requires add'l skills and setup to pull off. Thanks for watching! 😉

@@marianhoffmann3067 Yes. You can adjust volumes of any of those parts independent from one another. (You'll have to switch back and forth between panel A and B first). You also have the option of assigning the volume level for strings (or any sound engine) to a control pedal as well if you want hand-off control. @MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic Год назад
Hello @Jaz Kendikian Great question and one that comes up a lot. The answer is yes and no, While it's not possible to have 3 synths play at the same time (only 2), it is possible to have two synths and a piano play at the same time. The piano comes from piano engine and you get two of those as well. Said another way, you can have up to 2 organs, 2 pianos and 2 synths all playing at the same time. However, it's not possible to have any more than 2 from each play at the same time. The upcoming Nord Stage 4 on the other hand has three synth engines, and it does have the ability to play all 3 at once (along with 2 pianos and 2 organs too all at the same time). So for example: You could have a piano and strings playing in the right hand and a synth bass playing in the left. That's no problem. In fact, they don't have to be split, they can all be layered across the entire keyboard if you wanted. BUT if you want a sample bass playing in the left along with a sample flute layered with strings playing in the right, this is not possible because you only have two sample/synths from the synth engine at one time. Again, this is something the Stage 4 can do (play up to 3 sample/synths at once). Hope that helps clarify things.

What about using a volume pedal with split and layer. Example. I walk LH bass and want to have a RH piano w/sustain along with strings that I can control with a volume pedal. Do I use the Morph functions with Panel A/B?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 3 года назад
Hi @Don Stevenson - yes you would use a control pedal and assign that to morph the volume of the piano and synth engines. Then your sustain pedal would be assigned to the piano and synth engine as well. For the walking bass part, you would put that on panel B for example and not assign the sustain pedal to that. So it could work like this: Panel A Piano (Right side of the split) - sustain pedal and control pedal to morph volume Panel A Synth /Strings (Right side of the split) - sustain pedal and control pedal to morph volume Panel B Synth/ Bass (Left side of the slit) - no sustain and up to you if you want to morph volume or not. Hope that helps!

Another great tutorial, Marc. I wish I had viewed this video before the others I've seen because some of the questions that I ended up asking you in those other videos - were already addressed here in this tutorial. Of course, I have another quick question. :) . . . . Are all of the various pedal settings available as either Program or Global settings, or only just Global? For example - I read that the Rotor Pedal can be set to either Hold or Toggle. Can that option be set on a per Program basis? - And if that is possible, does that particular Program maintain the setting and override any change at the Global level? This reminds me of another related question - but on a different topic. Can I make a key change on a Program basis, so that a particular Program will always be transposed (up or down) separately, and the other Programs would be set to the Global setting? So, generalizing that question, what settings can be set at the Program level; all of them? Great job as usual, and thanks again. :)

Hi Lou! Thanks for your compliments! Your observations here about the fact that you had questions answered in some of my previous videos further demonstrates to me the absolute need in the marketplace for a pro training course for the Nord Stage 3 (which I'm working on!). Having a complete course allows the musician the ability to learn the Stage 3 from A to Z in the correct order and in an environment that tracks progress and is searchable. A training course like this becomes an authoritative video library on anything related to the operation and configuration of these professional instruments and to me is a natural fit to round out the package. Just like a keyboard needs a good stand and a good case, I believe one also needs a good training course to get the most out of it in the least amount of time and effort (while also having fun learning it with an instructor). With that said, keep an eye out for my Nord Stage 3 Pro training course at www.mykeystomusic in the coming months. Now about your question. Most things on the Nord Stage 3 when it comes to overall settings are in fact global. The rotor pedal specifically is global. However, some areas of the system can be either global or program specific such as how the sound "output" mapping is routed. You get to pick if you want your routing "Global" and once selected, that overrides everything. If you pick "program" as your choice, each program will have its own settings and the global aspect no longer applies. In other words, in this example, the individual program will override any global setting. Transposing is a bit of a different animal but you can have your cake and eat it too! Each program can store individual transpositions built right it each the program. Something like this comes in handy if the singer decides they need the song to be played down two semitones (but only that song). Then you can just click the "transpose" button and assuming you stored that program -2, you're good to go. So, if and when you invoke the transpose button, it will adhere to the settings set in the program directly. In addition to that, you have something called a "Global Transposition" option available from the "system button" area. This will transpose the entire keyboard without having to click on the "Transpose" button at all. Let's say you have to play the entire gig from a fake book but all that is available is the Bb trumpet book. You could simply transpose the entire keyboard and play out of the Bb book and you would still be in tune. Now let's take that singer example from above again. If you were to then click the transpose button, the individual program transpose setting would be ADDED to whatever the global transposition is doing. So in this case, you could play out of the Bb fake book and still lower a particular song for the singer as well and still be in tune. Hope that helps explain this a bit more.

Hello @Josh Paredes Great question! The Nord Stage 3 keyboard has 10 pre-defined split points with LED lights indicating where they are on the panel. There is no way to define a split in any other way other than those 10. Sorry! (The Nord Lead A1, on the other hand, can split once on any key). I think the thinking behind this is to provide the musician an easy way to identify where a split point is where as other boards, you essentially have to memorize where you created your splits. So, with that said, it would be ideal then to have an LED anywhere on the board and split at any keypoint, but it doesn't work that way. They gave us 10 and we live with that.

@MyKeysToMusic 4 года назад
Hi Kaykay. So, technically speaking, there is no way out of the box to have 2 harmoniums and a bass line at the same time as you already figured out. And there is no effect that can "double" an instrument like this - although that's a terrific idea of something that would be nice to see (much like a harmonizer does today). So, no, there is no way to pull this off out of the box that I can think of. Now, with that said, you could potentially create a homemade sample that included a bass in the lower part of the keyboard and a harmonium on the right side of the keyboard. Making such a sample would be a bit of work and I wouldn't exactly say that this is feasible as not only would it take some doing, it may not come out as good as you're expecting in the end. Sorry, there is no real solution here but a good question none the less!

Hello @Michael Truax thank you for your question! So, I think if you ask 10 different people this exact same question, you are going to get 10 different answers. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the most complicated/complex/robust electronic keyboard, I would rank the Stage 3 as a 5 or 6. Now with that said, I haven't played with nor am I remotely familiar with enough other keyboards/synths to make such a bold claim. I am very familiar with the Nord family at this point and I have some experience with Roland (as this was my main brand from 1983 through 2010). I also have some familiarity with Korg as well from 1986 through 2000 and again in 2018 to the present. But everything I said really doesn't matter. What matters is what works for you so here are some things to think about: 1) If you are looking to get really nice pianos and better B3 sounds but yet you want to have something very easy to operate, I recommend a Nord Electro 6. This doesn't have the complexity of layers or the full-featured synth engine to worry about (compared with the Nord Stage 3). 2) I have training lessons that walk you through the instrument from A to Z available at www.MyKeysToMusic.com if you the kind of person that does well with video tutorials and wants a well-defined and very comprehensive training delivered in an add-free and focused environment. 3) The Stage 3 has a slight learning curve yes, but once you get it, it will seem more straightforward and almost easy compared to other keyboards (I'll pick on the Korg Kronos as an example). But I'll mention it again here that the Electro is quite a bit easier to operate and provides the same quality piano and organ sounds you'll find on the Stage 3. The Electro however lacks the additional keyboard layer and the synth engine along with pitch stick and mod wheel which for a lot of people, are dealbreakers. If you haven't already done so, I recommend you take a look at my comparison video here between the Nord Stage 3 and the Nord Electro 6: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-av3GxXakeaM.html Best of luck with your decision! 🏄‍♀️

Hi @Julie Spangler. You may still have your "Memory Protection" on which is a one-time setting on your keyboard. Go to the system settings and on the first page you should see a setting called "Memory Protect." You can turn it on and off by moving the program knob just to the right of that screen. Once the memory protection setting is off, you should be able to save programs. If you're looking for complete training from A to Z on your Stage 3, you may want to consider enrolling in "Master the Nord Stage 3" found on my main website: www.MyKeysToMusic.com. Hi, your work is epic. I understand that you can use 6 engines at the same time. My question is: Can I use 1 piano engine and 5 synth/sample engines? Most of the combis that I used to make on my Korg Krome73 for example, involves usually: a pad, a pad an octave up, a synth Lead, another synth lead, a synth stabb, a synth perc with arp, a mallet, Eps, another pad an Octave up. Can I do the same in Nord?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 4 года назад
Hi Victorio! So, unfortunately, you cannot do something like 5 synth/sample engines at the same time. The combinations work like this when you combine both panel A and B: Up to 2 Organ Engines Up to 2 Piano Engines Up to 2 Sample/Synth Engines. This would be a dream if we could combine any engine with any combination of 6. I imagine the interface on that would have to change a bit along with the overall polyphony capability as well. This is a good idea too if Clavia/Nord had a module without the keys. I've been dreaming of such a thing since day one prior to owning a Nord Electro 3. Heck, I'd take a software module if it came to that. Well, even with the current capabilities mentioned above, there is more than enough power and options to go around in most cases. Great question - thank for watching!

What if I made a program like you listed above, 2 Organ + 2 Piano + 2 synth. What settings would allow the Delay FX on organ, piano and synth? So far I've only been able to assign 1 Delay FX source per panel. Thanks!
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 2 года назад
Hello Victorio! So, unfortunately, you are only able to have 2 synth sounds happening at the same time. One would come from Panel A and the other from Panel B. You could do a possible work-around and create a sample that includes multiple synth sounds coming from the same layer but that's a work-around and not ideal for a number of reasons. So, what you can do today with your Korg you won't be able to do with the Nord Stage 3 if your plan was to use that many synths at the same time. I wish things were different and this is a big request from a lot of people. Maybe the Stage 4 will resolve this someday? The Stage 3 sets out to be an all-around performer's keyboard to play live that includes great sounding pianos, organs, and synth sounds which for most applications are more than enough. It cannot however be pushed this hard in the synth area by itself based on the way it's designed. Now, with that said, two synth sounds are generally good enough for most people and most applications - especially peopole who are not looking for a synth oriented emphasis like you might get with other boards. What you descirbed is trivial for other boards (think Korg/Yamaha workstations) and also trvial for a comptuer (think Apple Mainstage). But this board was design as a live perofmrance keyboard - not a workstation so there are limitations like youv'e described above. Keep the questions rolling if you have more...

I wanted to split sounds from the synth engine. A Bass & Flute or a Bass & Lead Synth, Bass & Guitar etc... is that possible? Thanks
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 4 года назад
Hi Kaykay Chauhan! Great question and the answer is YES! With the Stage 3, you have panel A and panel B. So, the Bass could go on Panel A and be positioned on the left split. Then on Panel B, you'd have either a flute, synth, or guitar (using your examples) on the right split. Then you would push both A and B buttons to have panels A and B play at the same time. Then on top of that, you can choose organ or piano to play along with those in either split or on top as a layer if you choose. Now, the only limitation here is if you wanted to have 3 sounds coming out of your synth engines. You only get two at a time (one for panel A or one for Panel B). So in other words, you couldn't have a bass in the left and then a flute on the right layered with a guitar. The guitar would be a third sound and you only get two at a time from each engine. 2 Organs, 2 Pianos and 2 Synths. Hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching...

@@kaykayco Happy to help. Well, you are NOT able to do this on the Nord Electro 6. With the Electro 6, you only get a single "panel" so that means only one sound coming from the Sample/Synth engine a time. You can still do a basic split by having a bass in the left, but then that engine would be used up leaving just the piano and organ engines capable of sounding. Can you have two of the same zones on different sections of the split? I.e. if you wanted grand piano on one half and then electric piano on the other? And can you save this all into a song or a preset?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 2 года назад
Hello @Kate Fairlie Thanks for your questions here! Not sure if you already own or use a Nord Stage 3 but I'll answer this as if don't currently use one. So, you can't have the same engine split on the same panel. In other words, you can't have a piano on one end of the split and an electric piano on the other side of the split within the SAME panel. HOWEVER, you can have a piano split on one end of the keyboard playing from Panel A and then your electric piano playing from the other side of the split using Panel B. So, the answer to your first question is no and yes. Now, about your second question about saving all this to a song/preset. The answer is yes. You can save all this to a preset (which we call "Programs" in The Nord world). Then later if you want to use a saved program in a song, you can do that as well. Songs by themselves act as a list index of your programs. So, once you have a bunch of programs you are happy with, you can organize them into a song any way you see fit (such as with a set list for example). In addition, songs have "parts" which further gives you the power to have several programs used on a single song (such as when you need one program for the verse and another one for the chorus). Finally, The Nord Stage 3 has 400 program locations. 300 hundred of these are pre-loaded at the factory giving you 100 free at the time of purchase. However, at anytime you could delete/edit/add programs within all 400 locations freely. Nord owners manage all this using the "Nord Sound Manager" which is a free application that runs on any Mac or Windows computer. I have lessons here on that if you want to get an overview: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-32UBN7Dj4Is.html Also note that you may have noticed I have complete pro training online for all these keyboards at www.MyKeysToMusic.com There, you'll get newer versions of these lessons and over 18 hours of video content that you can watch throughout a year. One of the setups I use on my old Kurzweil Mark 10-150's was the ''bass ride'' feature for the left hand. (I hauled around a Mark 10, turning it up on end and wheeling it pretty easily anywhere with a handtruck.) Does Nord have anything comparable?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 3 года назад
@sunnypm Great question. I think the best answer is to say that no. The Nord keyboards don't have anything like this. The Mark 10 appears to have a full-featured accompaniment section that includes bass, drums, and chords with a variety of styles. This is not unlike many keyboards of the day as well as today where you can essentially become a "one man/woman band." Nord keyboards on the other hand are strictly stage keyboards/synths versus keboard workstations or the like. The Stage 3 and Wave 2 do have an arpeggiator which provides the ability to play the current sound in a rhythmic pattern against the chord you might play, but I wouldn't call this a substitute or even a close cousin to what the Kuurzweil is doing. I was not able to specifically hear what the "Bass Ride" feature does from anyone's video, but my assumption is that it would provide a walking bass line with a ride cymbal accompaniment? If so, then no, the Nord keyboards definitely don't have anything like that whatsoever. Also, there are no traditional drum sounds either to speak of when you're talking about Nord keyboards. Hope that helps answer the question!
@sunnypm

@@MyKeysToMusic I uploaded this example. It's just a simple split, with my left hand playing the acoustic bass/cymbal hiss sound, and right hand playing piano. (Although I've used other sounds on the right like sax or flute) When playing with a percussionist, I use just the acoustic bass sound on the left and piano on right. I would be satisfied if the Nord could do this. Kurzweil never made a portable version of the Mark 10 series, which would have been ideal for me. Their portables were much more tedious to change sounds on the fly for live performance. I later purchased the 150 used in this video, with grand piano case, and to heavy for me to gig with. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RzgLuRrWQSM.html

@@sunnypm Thanks so much for providing that example. Quick question that I was not able to gather from the demo video: Doe the ride cymbal sound with every bass note played or does it do it on the beat more like a drum machine? With the Stage 3, you could have a split keyboard with bass in the left and you could potentially couple that with a ride cymbal sample that would sound with every bass note played. Then the right split could be a piano. If however, you wanted a bass sound, ride cymbal sound, AND another sound from the sample engine, you couldn't do that. The Stage 3 can play up to two samples, but not 3. The ride cymbal, bass, and sax (for example) would all be samples. So the answer to this question is "maybe yes" when a piano is used in the right hand (because that comes from the piano engine), and "no" when you need a sax/flute in the right hand as well. And if you could let me know about the cymbal and when it sounds, that would be great. Thanks!

@@MyKeysToMusic yes, the cymbal sounds on every note, like a layer, not a drum machine effect. This makes me hopeful that the Nord 76 HP would be a good choice for me. @MyKeysToMusic 3 года назад
@@sunnypm That is good to know that the cymbal sounds on every note (that makes it easier). I think in light of this, technically speaking the Stage 3 could do this and at the very least, it can provide a good acoustic bass on the left with a separate sound on the right no problem. I'm going to put this theory to the test and see if I can sample a ride cymbal and have that play along with an acoustic bass. I'll then make a quick video and post it here in the comments. Is there any way to bounce a program down to a sample so you can put a whole "program" on zone A and add another layer with zone B?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 4 года назад
Hi Julian! I like your line of thinking here because it's "out of the box" (a good thing). So, the answer is yes and no on this. Yes, you could technically record a completed program into your computer, create a sample via the Nord Sample Editor 3 and then place that sample back on the Nord Stage 3. But it may or may not come out exactly the way you intended it to. A Nord Stage 3 original program will respond to all input controls providing you fidelity and control over every attribute. But once you have this as a sample, however, it becomes a static "recording" and you lose some of that ability to control it in the same way. A sample is a locked, static, rendition captured at the time you recorded it. Yes, you can further adjust samples using the Stage 3 synth engine, but it wouldn't have the same control you had when it was an original program. I've never personally tried this, but in theory, it should work. But like I said, I suspect the end result will be not quite the original. It's something that you could test easy enough. Side note: In addition to being able to "bounce" a program down to a sample as you asked about, you can also have multiple samples assigned to various keys. For example, you could have one sound assigned to C2 through C3 and another sound assigned just to D4, and a third sound assigned to E5 through E6, for example, all playing on the same program. I will explain these theories a bit more as I plan on creating a "Nord Sample Editor 3" free course this year (1st or second quarter, 2020) available at www.MyKeysToMusic.com

I love them both, and splitting the keys with piano on bottom, and synth on top sounds excellent. But, and there's always a but, the end of the horn line has a fall. And I've found in the forms that Nord doesn't have capabilities for a velocity sensitive horn patch like my Motif for example. So I wanted to encorperate that fall at the very top of the keyboard. Maybe by doing another split, or sample the F note in the register that I want to the highest key on the board. Is there any other way to cheat this without having to switch to another patch, or having to add another keyboard to my rig?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 4 года назад
@@julianlambert6887 Great question. If you are only using a single synth engine on one panel so far, you could use the other panel to incorporate your horn fall on panel B and split the keyboard 3 times. So it would be like this: Panel A: Bottom Split (Piano) Middle Split (Horn Solo) Upper Split (none) Panel B: Bottom Split (none) Middle Split (none) Upper Split (Horn Fall - new sample you create) Then make sure you are playing both panels at the same time (click both panel A and B buttons at the same time). This assumes you are not already using the synth engine on panel B. If you are already using the synth engine on Panel B, then you'd have to create your own new sample (using the Nord Sample Editor 3) that includes the standard horns assigned to the majority of the keyboard and then assign the horn fall at the upper right (all on the same sample). So yes, you can in-fact have a single sample patch that includes multiple sounds assigned to various keys and all of this can be played by either panel A or B on the NS3. I think either of these options would likely work for you. Let us know how you make out!

The 4 zones I'm referring to is what you end up with once you split the keyboard three times. For example: One split = 2 zones Two splits = 3 zones Three splits = 4 zones When you are looking at the split display, you are seeing the details of the splits not the zones. To see the 4 zones, do this on your keyboard: - Hold the shift button while selecting the "Utility" button. (The utility button is also #5 on the panel) - Click on the "page" up button. This will navigate you to page 2 of the utility options and display the 4 zones you are referring to.

@@MyKeysToMusic Thanks. I will check that out. I have the Novation 88 key controller showing up soon and will try the split function with that machine to see how it works.

Awesome Issac! I love the Matrix - one of my fav movies. "Show me" is the next line and then the fun begins.

Hi Hot 88s. Not sure what is happening there. Did you end up getting the Stage 3? 5 months ago you were still thinking of getting one.

Yeah. Just give me a keyboard with sliders and zones. So much easier. I'll stick with my rd2000. 😕

I do like the straight forward interface of the rd2000 and the LEDs next to the sliders is a big plus.
