I'm a graduate of TSU and an AOB former French Horn section leader both in the concert and marching bands. I'm a Norfolk native and have much love and respect for the Green & Gold. Both bands brought tears of musical joy to my heart. I must say that these are two of the finest musically inclined marching bands you will ever hear. I was present to witness the finest of the Best. Both are winners and there were damn sho no losers!

NSU placement in the stands at home games is Alil awkward. A lot of their sound go upward instead of forward. Otherwise this is how NSU sounds. I guess it wasn’t much of a 5th vs A&T because they knew A&T had to be at a HS for an exhibition show.

Really good battle. I love both bands. TSU with the En Vogue won my heart in terms of best song, but NSU’s sound - specifically the trumpets… I give them the slight edge. Gotta have strong trumpets. No way around it.

Had planned on going to this but had to miss... AAAAGGHHHHH!! Outstanding 5th!!! Had me sitting in my chair waiting to see what the other band would come back with! lol I think Norfolk was cleaner. TSU definitely sounded good no doubt. But for this one, i give it to Norfolk. If this come up again, i WILL be there!!!! Great job both bands!!!

I'm sorry, Im trying to figure out how ANYONE can say Norfolk's arrangements were a snooze fest. REALLY???? That comment came from a FAMU fan at that! The same FAMU that TSU was making squares in the air while FAMU was playing right beside them at the National BOTB. Both bands yesterday were good. The win to Norfolk for clarity of sound and excellent execution! TnSU please get the Euphonium section to stop scrunching up in the middle of the band! 😩And either ya'll should learn your music, or get an arranger that can write music to fit your capabilities! Ya'll had a few moments of love and power from the Tuba section but that's all. By @36:50 Norfolk proceeded to demonstrate collegiate level musicality and performance.

In honor and memory of my off-campus college roommate, Fredrick S. Humphries, PhD. From his obituary: "After teaching chemistry at FAMU in 1974, he became president of Tennessee State University, an arch-rival of the Rattlers. Humphries was president when the state wanted to merge TSU with the Nashville campus of the University of Tennessee, a White school. It happened, but the federal land grant status of TSU protected it from a hostile take of sorts by a White institution. Tennessee State maintained its administrative status and brand." It sounds like NSU was scouting TSU. I’m biased towards TSU but…😢. NSU came prep’d with specific goal. Norfolk came with complex dark arrangements, just like TSU is known too do. Like they picked specific songs that sounded like they were match to go against what they knew TSU would play. It’s always nice to see bands playing music in style it was written.

To be honest Norfolk was being who they have already been. Tennessee State arranged a version of Dirty Diana with that funeral march interpolated in it because that's a song Norfolk is known for. Plus they played Behold also. They scouted Norfolk It seems like.

Killa Kev, as always, very nice production. I have read all the comments and just have one or two things to add. Both bands dis well and both have some spots to clean up. My beloved Legion may need to update their stand music a bit according to some comments I have heard and seen in other vids. TnSU I need them bass drums to be more in the pocket supporting the band not being the band at times. Hope to see this match up again. Thanks again kev! Be blessed.

@darrylconyers874 Many will differ, but it is about a person's preference. I marched in the Legion myself, but I must be objective in the way I view battles. If they are not up to par, they have to be called on it. I suspect the directors appreciate the honesty as long as it is constructive. Since i was there live i think it was more of a tie in the 5th. Tnsu definitely had more of a bass heavy sound but you could still hear the woodwinds well. Nd as for norfolk them trumpets and mellos were a1 especially during sectional. This was my very first time hearing norfolk in person and for about a qtr and a half i was unimpressed especially when they played hay in the middle of the barn for like 8 mins before actually putting volume in their horns mid 2nd qtr. Then after halftime both bands basically played who can play hbcu classics better after a short sectional battle.

But when they were playing hay and it was a extended deadball with a timeout after I thought they would've played louder. Completely 2 different band style… both plays music 🎶 that we like but TSU is traditional HBCU.. while NFSU sounds like HBCU, they are on the a whole other level with there play… NFSU can compete with FBS SCHOOLS in drum line and sound…I was at the game and stood behind NFSU BAND during the 5th quarter and I must say I’m not surprised by watching RU-vid of there performances… I’m from Tennessee and I like TSU band a lot but I’ll think THE million dollar funk band is GRRRRREART!

My thoughts: This is what us bandheads call a battle between two opponents of the same style and same to similar delivery. I lean nsu for the win here only based on they were a little cleaner in execution but Tnst arrangements for what they played was more technical if Tnst had another week to run these dames songs I lowkey think they would’ve won. Please!! TSU doesn’t come close to the quality Norfolk puts out… I was on the 50 yard, surrounded by TSU fans and they came up to me saying how great Norfolk was and how poor TSU’s song selection was as…I wasn’t going to comment but when I see crazy responses like this, stupidity and blind allegiance has to be addressed…I used to even like TSU but I’m sorry, TSU can’t stand on the same field as Norfolk🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

@@troystrong8041 quality of sound doesn’t mean they executed or that it equates to a victory. I’ve always been a fan of NSU and I know what they can do. It’s just not up to par for where they can be. Y’all gotta stop getting so uptight about an opinion. Quality of sound was good but the arrangements were lackluster and didn’t have much intensity

@@andrae20 no, you need to let people voice their opinion on a forum like this…I said what I said…Norfolk, by far, was the better band yesterday and I did not attend either school,,, my ears do not ever deceive me and I don’t have any loyalty to any school other than James Madison University Marching Royal Dukes!!! It is what it is!! This blind loyalty shiott needs to stop…TSU was all over the place yesterday and those damn drums need to calm the f@@@ down…

Nsu was not clean. Clearly the intimidating presence of the aob was enough to cause some mistakes. Like dirty Diana at 11:52 trumpets were messing up. Pure Nerves not clean.

Enjoy both at times but lean more TSU. They have clarity and power. Norfolk just dont have enough bottom for me. Too top heavy. Also TSU's song selection is pretty much always better than their opponents most of the time.

People claim they know music😂😂😂….TSU with clarity and their base drums ruining almost every song banging on their drums like needy children😂😂😂…song selection better😂😂😂…Boogie Nights against a band like Norfolk…Dirty Diana against a band who has perfected that song and played it back at them with an unexpected twist…people say anything but that’s your opinion on an open forum

You see and hear the difference when “supposed” powerhouse bands face each other at a game….some live off reputation and others have evolved and are pushing the envelope…Norfolk is superior to TSU…TSU disappointed me…boring, hardly any dynamics…very SWAC’ish but that’s what you get when those are pretty much the only bands you battle…Norfolk has the whole package🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

Ok now, TSU was sounding more full than NSU until the camera mic stayed on for both groups. Then, you could tell NSU was slightly cleaner and more balanced. Either no mic at all or use that camera mic the whole time, please.

Hey Kev, I'm a fan, but the volume of NSU's bass drums and tubas deepens after a few songs the same way TSU's starts out. Is it volume control on the camera?I'm a Crat so there's no hate but there's a definite change in the audio after the first few rounds. IJS.

@micahwynn6889 there is no change in audio at all, not on my end at least. Both bands are filmed from the same distance with the same volume levels. No audio comes from the camera, we would hear nothing but wind because there’s no wind screen to protect it.
