In the 1950's, Steve Allen envisioned the perfect talk-show scenario. Host after host attempted to achieve the paradigm. Then, in 1996, Norm MacDonald made his first appearance on the Conan O'Brien Show. Allen, 74 years old and essentially couch-bound, watched the exchange, rolled over, and died with a smile on his face. He lived another 4 years in that position.

They said because of the celluloid film this was originally filmed on decomposing, these appearances on Conan were almost lost. Thankfully, the National Film Preservation Foundation found these deep in the old NBC archival vaults, restored the film, and added color digitally to them....
@dixonpinfold2582
@dixonpinfold2582 3 года назад
Nice to hear. For the life of me I can't understand why archiving was never a bigger deal to deep-pocketed companies like NBC, the movie studios, and all the rest. It costs peanuts. Archivists are the sort of people who will work for low wages. Storage space in a lousy part of any city or town is super cheap. If a storage medium is known to deteriorate, at least re-copy it once every five years (or whatever) by renting some high-quality equipment. A show costs a million dollars to produce and you can't spend $50 over the following century preserving it? (I think that rant was building in me for a long time now!) Cheers. :)
@rhymeswithteeth
@rhymeswithteeth 8 месяцев назад
I'm aware that restorers are able to add color to old black and white films but the thing that amazes me is how they were able to digitally remove the pirates hat that Norm always wore and, also, remove the parrot on his shoulder which was a constant companion of Norm's. I liked how Norm would often refer to himself as "Peter" and refer to his parrot as "re-Peter".

@@samich57 I think the point was to show that he isn't going to be dissuaded from keeping the word midget in his vocabulary. As far as he's concerned, I would guess, the word means very, very short person, and thus there can be nothing wrong with using it as a noun for very, very short persons.

I used to bet (daily) at a horse track, and the funny part about that story is that bets can't come out to $7.77. The way the odds are configured they come out in increments of 10 cents. Norm acknowledges this VERY subtly. Also, it's customary to always tip the mutuel teller at least to the dollar. He acknowledges that, too. That always struck me as funny. Norm really was a master of storytelling. He's both extremely simple and extremely smart.

@@dereklitchfield4812 The way norm said it doesn’t make sense, buddy. It don’t fit the answer “it’s me”. If the answer is me, Norm would be saying that my father is my father’s son.

The joke about logic. Was it his or is it a part of the folklore? I'm interested in it, because I was born in an ex-soviet country in the 90s, so I was growing up in the 2000s there. It was pre-Internet, an area where no one speaks English, yet somehow I heard this joke from my uncle one time. Almost the exact same joke, with the exception of the other guy smoking a cigarette at the bus stop and instead of the dog house, the joke had a fish bowl. It felt quite surreal watching this video now and hearing this joke from so many years ago, now in English (while all my life I had been convinced that this was a Russian joke). A logical* ;) explanation as to how the joke ended up in the Russian culture would be that someone had traveled to the US at some point or had a contact there, heard this and other jokes, wrote them down, and then came back to Russia and released a joke book (they were quite popular at one point here), and my uncle read the joke book, found the joke there, liked it very much and then told it to me. But he told me the joke differently - he added the fish bowl instead of the dog house (maybe that's because he was secretly gay; and I remember he did own a fish bowl and not a dog house)

I had to look up the riddle of "brothers sisters I have none". Turns out Norm got the riddle wrong, but it's still funny. It's an actual riddle. "Brothers Sisters I have none, this man's father is my father's son. Who is this man?" The answer should be "My son! He's my son!" The cab driver's answer is "Me!" Which doesn't make sense. But Norm's joke works anyway.

i just sat here in utter confusion for 20 minutes because i couldn’t comprehend how the answer would be the cab driver himself. was very relieved to realized that norms answer was wrong (because of course he knew nobody would even notice)

John Smith II will tell the riddle: this man’s (John Smith III) father (John Smith II) is my (John Smith II) father’s (John Smith I) son (John Smith II) Therefore, the answer to the riddle is the one telling the riddle.

@@anton5608 the timing is so ridiculously perfect that you just know they both get the humor. something about norm telling this story without any pauses at all and then suddenly at the most surreal and confusing moment he just goes completely blank and everyone is just silently in a trance waiting for him to respond. and the last thing you’d expect is for him to go huh?
@ZenFox0
@ZenFox0 3 года назад
@@arpansamuel6745 I think Conan knows it's part of the setup of the joke, so he plays along (plus it seems like such a non-sequiter from a drunk guy playing darts), and asks him where the turtle comes from. Or maybe he's genuinely curious. But then Norm acts stumped, like he wasn't ready for that question, which is funny, especially since it's his story. You'd think he would have thought of that. But it gives Norm a chance to seemingly make up a reason about how kids are irresponsible, and he thought better about giving the turtle to his nephew, so it's a way out of trying to explain where the turtle came from. But of course the idea of giving a living turtle to a drunk guy is even more absurd, so that's funny too. (Of course you hopefully wouldn't do this in real life, but it's a joke, so it's funny.) But all of this is the elaborate setup of the drunk coming back and saying how much he enjoyed the roast beef on a hard roll. So it was a part of the joke all along, but also made the journey more enjoyable.
