A North Carolina trustee recently spoke about the Tar Heels' current position in the ACC. His comments support the idea that UNC will not be a part of the ACC for longer unless big changes come about. 'Locked On Tar Heels' host Isaac Schade joins the show to discuss what it all means.
On today's episode of Locked On College Football, Spencer McLaughlin goes on to talk about the G5 race to make the 12-team Playoff in 2024. Boise State and Tulane are NOT the only teams vying for a Playoff spot next year. 10:56
UCF used to be in the G5 before joining the Big 12, and they appear poised for a year 2 leap under HC Gus Malzahn. The Knights' work in the transfer portal has been a far cry from feeling like a G5 team. 20:55

@@tarheel7406I think you meant to say BiG10. But if FSU did go to the Big12, they would not be the only team and more importantly, because Clemson, Miami the U, Pitt and Louisville in the past have all expressed interest in joining the Big12, albeit with Texas and Oklahoma in the conference not gone, they all may go or at least 1-3 and give Big12 substantial opportunities and increase in revenue. The ACC would definitely be below the Big12 and would never ever catch up to the Big12 let alone close the gap with the other two power conferences. Because this is about football first and foremost before any other sports. It’s one thing to lose top notch schools to either the SEC or BiG10 and another thing to lose schools to the Big12, especially top notch schools in football and other sports or all sports for that matter. If from ACC Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, and say Memphis from AAC were to go to the Big12, not only does the Big12 pick up three football blue bloods and all sports elite schools or borderline blue blood in everything just about; they also pick up a G5 school that is Tier-1\Carnegie-1\R-1 academically and solidly qualified to be in any power conference that would be the ACC’s top 5 choice for adding and cripple the ACC to still be autonomous and power but drastically lower than the Big12. So in the best interest of the ACC, I hope you meant to say BiG10.
@tarheel7406
@tarheel7406 13 дней назад
@@michaelwall3393 Nope, I meant the BIG12 and not the B1G. The BIG12 had no unifying brand/culture, has no academic association, doesn't care about non-revenue sports. The BIG12 ended up with some journeymen, which fits FSU. It's really hard to put down in words. "Class" comes to mind, but that's not quite right. Nevertheless, whatever ir is oozes from the original comment. Regardless, the BIG12 is down its top 6 (net) and will never catch up. A "what if" CLEMSON/FSU had left for the BIG12 during the UMD replacement fight is an interested alternative timeline. The remaining top of the ACC would have likely scattered to the B1G/SEC/BIG12, so the ACC would have been the first P5 to get relegated down to the Tier 2. Demo trends would have eventually killed the PAC, so I could see a P3, but that BIG12 would still be the worst.

@@LoCoVANole a) I actually pity FSU a bit. It was a model expansion until it broke from realignment stress. Since I have no spite here, I hope FSU can land in the B1G (~80%) for being a model expansion all that time. That's also a win/win for UNC. Nevertheless, a P2 invite is not certain, so I put the BIG12/Other at ~20%. b) Ignoring ND, UNC is the top expansion target for both the SEC and B1G. If FSU would have accepted that reality, perhaps it would have made better decisions during this period of stress.

Spencer great show as always. The UNC statement is giving me PAC vibes. Why? The PAC wanted more $ and had a certain number in mind ( $50m), and ESPN had a certain number in mind ( $30m). We know what happened: ESPN walked away and steered certain schools to the Big XII, and were willing to sacrifice UO & UW to the Big 10 & Fox. Would ESPN repeat RECENT history with the ACC, and steer some schools to the SEC and some to the Big XII, even if it means losing FSU ( and probably) Miam? I would not bet against “History repeating itself.”
@tarheel7406
@tarheel7406 14 дней назад
The PAC is in a declining market for college football and was already handicapped by the time zone. The ACC is in a different situation. Going into this realignment, the ACC was worth far more than it was getting, hence the deal was called terrible. Likely worth enough to prevent depletion if a new deal was negotiated. After depletion, harder to calculate but likely an ~$30M per floor.
@michaelwall3393
@michaelwall3393 14 дней назад
@@tarheel7406as long as no one goes to the Big12 or the ACC has at least 10 schools remaining and have added 6 schools that will make networks happy and Notre Dame happy, sure 25-30 million dollars per school for a reconstructed contract could happen. But if it is down to 8 schools remaining and none have gone to the Big12 yet but two in Pitt and Louisville are more likely to go, then the ACC is done. If UVA, Va Tech, UNC, NCST, Clemson, FlaSt., Miami, and Stanford and Cal all leave for the power 2 conferences of the A4; then the ACC is doomed and done for. I mean technically the ACC would be down to 8 schools and could do exactly like the Big12 and add 4-6 true G5 schools and WazzU and OzzU from pacific northwest and add UConn for all sports and add all three service academies for all sports and probably still be an autonomous conference and get maybe 22-26 million dollars per school base revenue and clearly fourth of the A4 but build on success and be happy with that and then later on negotiate better revenue with results to back up your argument, like the Big12 has done. But I suspect Pitt and Louisville will be gone by then. Now I am talk about schools leaving this season or next season or in 2026. I am talking about 28 and beyond.

@@michaelwall3393 a) AGAIN, the BIG12's pro rata clause proves that ESPN values all P5 remainders at a fungible ~$30M per. The ACC's deal is already heavily discounted down to that level, so ESPN doesn't even need to negotiate to that amount. b) AGAIN, L'VILLE and PITT were among the strongest supporters of adding CAL+2. Even they see the BIG12 as the option of last resort. c) AGAIN, if the ACC so heavily depletes out to the SEC/B1G that it can't survive as a Tier 2, the new BIG12 (even if #3) won't matter. The gap to the then P2 will be that much wider. The BIG12 and the then P5 remainders can do whatever. THERE IS NO FEASIBLE PATH TO A PEER P3. NONE.

@@Doc_Boots UNC has been both smart and unreasonably hopeful. It has been smart to remain diplomatic and not unnecessarily hostile and disrespectful as FSU has done. It was not smart when waiting too long for successful efforts to get a new deal with ESPN. The ACC members with SEC/B1G options should have filed a joint dec judgment request ~6 months after the USC/UCLA news, well before things got so hostile internally and when that leverage against ESPN had a greater chance to work. UNC likely wanted to wait; FSU got increasingly impatient. As for Bubba, I just can't say. UNC's clear Plan A was for ACC Tier 1 survival, and he most certainly was working for that goal. Since Plan A has failed, the internal fight is now SEC or B1G. I don't know where Bubba is, but I expect the waning B1G faction rather than the waxing SEC faction. At the BOG level, there's additional factions that would rather see UNC wither with NCSTATE than save a least one, keep the ACC more relevant by forcing a stay, etc. I don't see a P2 invite for CLEMSON unless UNC moves, but FSU is gone to somewhere. What UNC does impacts all of the other ACC members, including their home states. That's why it's such a mess with everyone fighting for its best-case outcome. --- I suspect that any audit is to firm up the financials to better present to the politicians for case that UNC has to move to preserve its value and needs the discretion to move with or without NCSTATE.

100 million debt going forward annually, even with an increase from going to another conference they will still be in debt. They need to cut some sports and find some a way to make more money. As far as the approval process for the state system, NCSU is not tied to UNC Chapel Hill. They only have to show that it is better financially to move to another conference, and they have to give a year notice before the move. I am sure that UNC Chapel Hill will create a permanent out of conference schedule with NCSU if they end up in different conferences along with Duke (as that will take care of any possible veto by the UNC system president).

UNC is peer in athletics and academics with the other top P4 schools. FSU is not. I expect a lot of frustration at FSU after the P2 consolidation due to some failed expectations. FSU way overvalues itself, does not know where its stands relative to other P4s, and does not respect those P4s (even peers/betters). At least the FSU fans suffer these issues. In hindsight, FSU should have gone to the BIG12 when that was considered.
