Join us in episode 5 from our series Norwegian Craft Traditions. We are now going to visit Valle Husflid and get measured for our new traditional sweaters.
In Norway, you can still get bespoke clothing made on-site at the Husfliden stores, which
exist all over the country and usually have an atelier directly above the shop. Karin Bøe
takes us on a tour of Valle Husfliden and explains the time-honoured process: from
measuring customers to creating their unique and bespoke folk costumes.
We hope you are enjoying Setesdal september and all the different Norwegian Craft Traditions. We will be back with more Setesdal this Sunday!
Check out the Husfliden stores in Setesdal here:

Loving this series on Traditional Crafts (works of art!). The costumes are a work of art and pride for all craft persons involved. The sweaters are very interesting, I especially liked the tailors sweater with the flared hen and wide cuffs, I guess that is a self designed bespoke sweater! Thank you for sharing the local traditions and artisans who make it possible with us.

Thank you, Arne and Carlos for these wonderful and informative video’s. It is so great to see how the people of Norway cherish their heritage. In the old days we had a lot of different folk costumes in the Netherlands, but they are vanished. A lot of people in my country do not value this kind of heritage or craftmanship. We had a beautiful museum of Dutch folk costumes in Amsterdam, but because of the pandemic the founder of the museum had to close down. So again a part of our heritage is gone. Watching your video’s makes me happy and sad at the same time, because I would like to have a similar appriciation in my own country.

I remember a Norwegian store on 57th St between Lexington & Park Avenue in New York City, they had everything, extremely expensive but beautifully made. Now I know why a sweater cost $500.00 & that's in the early 60's. I did get to Norway in my 40s & I purchased a sweater plus earrings, brooch. The people were the most pleasant ever. I really am enjoying this series. It's amazing to learn about the traditions. Thank you 😊 💓

I am really enjoying this series. Entering this particular Husfliden store, with its gorgeous woodwork, tons of yarn and costumes in the making, was an added treat. It was interesting to see you both order your Setesdal sweaters. I cannot but admire a culture that invests so much time and effort to upholding "craftmanship at its best", as was aptly put. It is only right that it be showcased, as you are doing now. Thank you so much for taking us along in gorgeous Setesdal to meet these talented, hard-working and lovely people!

I meant to mention that the traditions remind me a bit of some described by Christel Seyfarth from Fano, I think. It makes me wonder if some traditions cross pollinated from people traveling or if they developed independently but share some similar ideas.

Hi Arne and Carlos, this was so enjoyable and important to me because here in US , the average person thinks knitting or crafts is something maybe your grandmother does and not significant , whereas in Europe , these amazing craftspeople have kept traditions alive for centuries. Here in uS , you could be knitting a Sedestal sweater, and response is ALWAYS the same. “Oh, that’s cute!” It’s maddening , The whole scene in Europe is so beyond my country! It’s a treat for us to have these videos, those of us who appreciate the crafts. So loving this whole month!

I found your channel when we were planning a trip to Norway for July, 2020. I have not watched all of your videos, and just came across this one. One of the things we wanted to do was to visit yarn shops/arts and crafts of Norway. Our trip was cancelled, of course, due to the pandemic, and we will not probably ever have the opportunity to travel there again, a lifelong wish to get to the country where all of my grandparents were raised. Thank you for sharing your ventures to these wonderful crafters. It is the next best thing to being in those shops, and I could not be more pleased!
