Proud Norwegian here! 🇳🇴 Did this when I was in and checked in at 3:06. I still remember one of the steepest hills had 30% incline, only part I couldn’t run 😂 I didn´t know this was a thing internationally, cool to see, plus cool that it is called a Norwegian foot march. Thank you for your service American brothers 🇺🇸

when i did this in -98 we had to carry our weapon too (g3)... if you look at norwegian topography youll see its not very flat!! the trick is to run when your going downhill and when its flat, and then walk uphill. the funniest thing is that we did it with equipment from WWII.. our rucksacks were the same as they used during the war with metal frames on our rucksacks and we had to produce make-shift solutions to stabilize them with bandoliers. i finished in 4 hours flat and was able to complete my duties the next day so i earned the badge, but i had open wounds on both sides of my lower back from the metal frame.. really cool that you americans are getting this badge

Awesome job guys. Great to see you push. I see a lot of these marches are being done on concrete/asphalt roads. They are supposed to be done on good trail paths and/or gravel roads. I hope to see more of that, it changes the feel of the march totally to be walking in the forest, compared to walking on a public road. Before 2014 you were supposed to carry your service weapon as well. So total weight including your weapon is 11Kg. I thought that was something you guys would take back up again. Good luck on getting the silver and gold pin.

Running 30 km kilometers (walking uphill) while carrying a 11 kg load, including the weapon (4.1 kg AG3) was pretty exhausting. I completed this march once in 1988, aiming for a result under 3 hours. That is an average pace of 6 minutes per km. I managed to keep this pace for 29 km (2 hours 54 minutes). Then my legs were toast and it took 20 minutes to finish the last km. I finished at 3 hours 14 minutes. It was very painful to take a shower afterwards, due to chafing of the skin here and there. They say that the record is 1 hour 56 minutes and 57 seconds (Roger Gjøvåg in 1984).

@@jrduran1978 There are plans now to retire the standard military boot in Norway since 1977 (M/77). They are going to keep leather as main material and not introduce Gore-Tex or similar materials. They are aiming for a better boot with better dampening to avoid damages to the foot and toes. Both my big toes are still numb after all the marching and running on hard surfaces wearing those M/77's some 35 years ago

We did not have any training for this before we had to do it in the norwegian army, we had to tape up our feet to avoid sore feets and prepare the ruggsack and the AG3 to have enough weight to it. I remember the borderguards at the russian border where tough doing this ... but they where used to walk out along the border.

Just completed my first! Didn't expect it to be as challenging, since I usually get my 6 milers in at 1:06 and my 12 milers around 2:20. This took me 4:00:44. Had to stop like 3 or 4 times passed mile 14. Knees were really giving out on me. Had fun though! 5 more to go 💪

Did this march 13 years ago when i served my time in the norwegian armed forces. I came in at 3 hours 58 minutes In norway (atleast in the army) we had to carry our gun aswell if i remember correctly, which adds about 6-7 pounds. But maybe my memory is mixing it up with other marches.
@jrduran1978
@jrduran1978 2 года назад
Mark, thank you for your service to your country. Much respect. You are correct. A weapon is part of the gear. However, in the U.S Army. The weight of the weapon is added to the ruck weight. So our rucks are heavier (6-7 pounds) to compensate not having the weapon. Reason: It’s a huge deal when a Unit is able host the Norwegian Foot March. Not having weapons allows Units the flexibility to host MORE competitors 👍🏼
@Borrelaas
@Borrelaas 2 года назад
@@jrduran1978 I think i got more out of my time in the army then the country got out of me. So i am the one who should be grateful. I only spent a year in the kings clothes (conscription), and never abroad or in any form of active combat etc, so i would never put myself in the same category as people serving abroad or serving for years. Oh i see, i am not quite sure since i read that the pack is 25 pounds, but if i remember correctly we carried 11kg packs which would be about 24 pounds, and the weapon would be about 6,5 pounds. which would bring the total up to about 30 pounds. But i might be misremembering and that we deducted the weight of the weapon from the weight of the backpack, in that case it would be just shy of 25 pounds (11kg) in total. When i think about it, it makes sense that it was that way since it would make it consistent across generations considering our service weapon was less heavy then the old AG3 which had just been fased out. I guess that makes sense then, its really fun as a norwegian to see you guys across the pond doing the same marches as we go through over here :) It warms our tiny cold norwegian hearts :)

I thought this was a marching event, so I assumed jogging was forbidden. When participating in the 4 days March of Nijmegen (100 miles in 4 days) jogging is strictly forbidden and will get you disqualified as that is a Marching event. So I assumed that would be the case with this event too. I guess I was wrong.
@jrduran1978
@jrduran1978 2 года назад
The "US Army - Norwegian Foot March" is a walk, jog, run at your own pace event. I've never heard of Nijmegen. But a 100 miles is crazy!!! You can have that. LOL
@AgressorNation
@AgressorNation 2 года назад
@@jrduran1978 I wonder what the official Norwegian Army rules are for theirs, not the US Army’s” March. You’ve never heard of the 4 days March of Nijmegen? Well, it’s only the largest marching event in the world. I did the 4 days March of Nijmegen back in 2001. It’s a yearly event in late July and in attracts militaries, police departments and civilians from all over the world. There’s no shortage of US Army personnel participating every year. Military personnel with 25lb packs do 40km (25miles) every day for 4 days. Civilians are not required to carry anything on their backs, so they do 50km every day. The event was originally organized by the Royal Dutch Army, back in the early 1916s, and at one point it was decided to allow civilians to participate. I don’t know if this is true, but I’ve been told that it was originally a soccer competition between Dutch Army Units. They’d March the 100 miles in 4 days and then hold their soccer competition.
@Lobos222
@Lobos222 2 года назад
You are wrong. The Nor 30Km is a timed event. You can be as fast as you want. The record is 1h 56min, I think. Personal record is 2h 57min. I have also done the Nijmegen once.
