Replacing the tires with my son Landen on my daughters 2004 Toyota Camry. We are using a manual tire changer from Harbor Freight. Watch how hard it was for us to do it. When I was a young man I did this with my father using hand tools. It was such a hard job but it taught me to respect hard work and treat others who do manual, physical labor with respect. This young man will not forget the difficulty of this job. Quality time with his father ! I still think My dad was crazy having us do this ! 🤙🏽

Yeah, and crazy doing it for yourself, get the Tyre shop to do It, But maybe handy for son to know how to do! A pair of small G clamps can be handy to hold the bead in place.

Hi angel, the trick to these is to have the part that breaks the bead on the bottom last hole from the three and make sure NOT to have the arm straight down over the tire, but you want to pull the tire further out and have the arm sit about at 45 degree angle or somewhere between 45 and 90, but definitely closer to 45, once you get a feel for what angle catches best just repeat, also always make sure to lube up the tire thoroughly going on and taking off.. You guys had the arm sitting much too upright parallel with the main shaft of the tool.

I’ve had one of these for a very long time, they have a learning curve, watch some videos and keep trying! Trust me it’s worth it!! Never answer to a tire shop or THEIR schedule again!!!

I don't know if anyone else mentioned, but the trick to getting the tire back on is to make sure you keep it pushed down in the drop while prying up and over small amounts at time. If you don't have the tire in drop center, you'll be fighting yourself like you were and not have enough stretch. It's difficult to keep it in drop center yourself without the tire walking, but No-Mar and others make "extra hand" tools. I prefer the Yellow Thing. These manual tire changes work great once you know how to use them and pay for themselves quickly. With the Yellow Thing, I only use a single tire iron like the two you had, but you need to use the other curved end to pry the tire over. There are also "duck bill" mods out there that make it even easier, but a little pricey. First time I used this, I struggled just like you until I figured out the trick was to keep tire in drop center. Now I can get a new tire on in less than 2 minutes. Hopefully these tips help you or others for next time.

By "drop center" do you mean centered on the tool, so the arm needs to be angled out towards the bead? I'm not clear on your instructions but appreciate the value of your experience and your contribution. Thanks for sharing!

The drop center of the wheel is the well or lowest part inside the wheel, near the outer edge. By making sure the opposite side of the tire bead sits down in that well, it allows the tire to be pulled out away from the rim during mounting and demounting for sufficient slack to get it over the edge. 24:03 you can see that lower well in the wheel there. It's usually never actually in the center with automotive wheels but always near the edge where the tire needs to be mounted from. If you don't keep that opposite side in the well or "drop center", you won't have the slack needed and make it a big struggle as you attempt to stretch the tire instead. They even have tools to clamp onto the rim to make sure the opposite bead is kept in the drop center, because that's such a key part of doing it successfully.

When I was a teenager, I wrkd in a gas station (gas was $.29 a gal) & we changed tires EXACTLY by hand like u did! Our equipment was alot heavier too. Use lots of ruglyde.😉 Ur boy is a cute/good young man. Dad's a great teacher!! Love ur videos!

Folks, if you buy this changer be prepared to encounter a tire so tight on the wheel that the bead breaker piece is destroyed by the leverage created by the steel pole. That happened to me today. I am lucky to have the scrap steel and welding equipment to fabricate a bead breaker that is hugely stronger than Harbor Freight’s.

When using these little changers, soapy water is your best friend! Get lots of soapy water (heavy on the dish soap) and get it into the beads. In the hardest cases, I use some WD-40. It can make the difference in getting the tire off and on or giving up in defeat. You really can’t expect a $70.00 tool to work as well as a professional level tire changing machine.

If you pull the tire out towards the end of the bar ( towards yourself) the bead breaker will be on an angle more forward rather than back towards the support post. That's why the tire didn't fit in and you had to cut the bar so it would go higher. Don't know if that makes sense but I have the same one, once you get used to it it's pretty easy.

I have used my Harbor Frieght tire changer and have fallen in love with it, I am in the process of upgrading it, I will have possibly $150.00 in parts. Please check the other RU-vid's to see the upgrades but if you can weld than you will have no trouble in building it. There's kits out there where they want $700.00 for it where the parts are only like I said about $1500.00. By the way, I married a Filipino in 1972 while in between DaNang Vietnam, Ubon Thailand and Cubi Point Philippines. We were married for 26 years and have 3 sons and 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. You take care and use more Soap and the tires will come off and go back on easier.

Another trick that I have learned is to get the new tire as hot/warm as possible so it is easier to mount. Don't forget to lube the wheel up with soap/grease for dis/mount! 23:07 If both red and yellow dots, the red dot has priority. Good informative video as always!

The trick with bead breaking is to move the tire further from the post, so the lever is pushing the blade of the tool angled toward the rim, not away from the rim... then it won't try to slip away from the bead.

what a nice boy ..lovely to see you work together - I've got the same tire changer and after a while of understanding the tricks, i do 1 tire in about 5-8 minutes (just changing). I know all the troubles here but the main thing is, that you always have to make sure that the opposite side of the tire edge is in the notch of the rim - then you can make the change without great effort .)

The Harbor Frieght tire changer is a pain in the butt. The trick is pushing the tire down past the humps inner rim then it will give you the room to put the tire on the rim. Good job guys.

I bought HF tire changer about 6 yrs ago, still using it about 30 tires later. Works fine for steelies, alum. not so much. Got to get used to it and have a couple tire irons too. But the HF bubble balancer is terrible.

The trick with bubble balancing is to place two weights in a V to balance out the single point. Keep scooting the weights towards each other, closing the tops of the V until the bubble balances. Been using this method for decades and it works perfectly at high speeds. Zero vibration. Only use center stick on weights.

You have to pull the tire out a little bit away from the machine so when you push down it goes forward into the lip of the rim instead of sliding backwards off the back of the tire.

Great Father/son time! 👍 It's very important to use wheel chocks and jack stands especially with the inclined driveway. I had a neighbor that lost his son because the car fell off of the jack.

Great video like others have said you want the rim all the way out to the stop if the your is still difficult like this try rotating it to a different spot and work your way around had to do this with 10 ply truck tires but it gets the job done also they sell what's called a duck bill kit for those online that make mounting and dismounting much easier but overall great job and effort

Hey bud , been looking at buying one of those changers and been watching a few videos. What I've observed that no one has really mentioned is rather then push the tire towards the center , pull it away. Several folks have noted the leverage part hitting the center post. I think it's intentional to avoid the foot from positioning too close resulting in slipping away from the rim. If the set up is pulled away from the post , the pivot point can only push down towards the rim. I'm guessing that's the purpose of the catch on the foot plate is to limit distance and bind,forcing the pressure in to the bead. Overall great video. Have kids of my own and experiences like these are what it's all about. Looking forward to trying out myself. All info is appreciated thanks for sharing your experience.

It was our first time to use that tire changer so I knew it wasn’t going to be easy but my son and I got it done. I think if I do a couple sets of tires I would get better on it. @Aaron Lawrence You're right. It's all about the leverage. The way he had it set up, the tire was too close to the center post and the bead breaker was forced straight down onto the sidewall. The tire needs be away from that center post, up against the metal triangle wheel chock. In that position, the bead breaker is at an angle and is forced between the rim & the bead and won't slip down onto the sidewall. This would've saved him a lot of effort and he wouldn't be advising against buying this manual wheel changer. On the plus side, he had quite an adventure with his son. Can't argue with that.

To anybody watching this video I want to say. I am a 32 year old ox 🐂 220 pounds and definitely work out regularly. I brought this machine for $70 mounted it to the wood floor in my garage and almost pulled the floor beams up all the way out of the floor and ripped through the studs trying to turn the bar around the tire with this thing took me and somebody else to try to change sports tire on an Audi I immediately wanted to return this to the store. Do not let the videos fool you manual tire machine is not for the heart and not at one job especially not with rims you care about

I got my first mechanic job in the mid-1980's and have changed hundreds of tires over the decades, incl the big trucks. none are "easy", even with modern machines there can be issues with todays fancy wheels. but I did buy one of these ($60 clearance) because shops want $50 ea tire to mount & balance -if I don't buy the tires from them. Walmart online has the best prices on tires, and selection..this is not about the money it's about taking power back into your own hands, and maybe being able to swap a tire in a blackout. 😉 the $200 I saved bought a new battery 🏁🏁🏁

Hey Angel, I think you need the tyre further away from the centre post. The triangle at the foot should rest inside the rim, then the bead breaker will be pushing outwards and will keep itself in the bead properly without needing the piece of wood...No need to cut the pivot tube this way either🤣👍🇦🇺

Also it should give better mechanical advantage with the bead breaker out further from the post. Nice to hear your daughter is over hear doing important training for her country and a great career. I'm in Perth W.Aus, we've just had a brief 4 days of lockdown, so hopefully will be back to full freedom within the next 8-9 days. It's a bit more intense with lockdowns over on the east coast right now. Not much fun for you daughter if she's in Sydney, but she should be fine if she's staying in her room. I got a homemade one my dad made in the early 80s I learned how to use it as a kid. I got real good at it . I am 48 now I change all my own tires. Mine is built way better then the ones you buy.

When my son was same age as yours , I exposed him to all kind of auto repair and engine build , he didn't have patience or much interest . Fast forward to 18 years old bought his first car now he is trying to catch up all the prior tutorial I've showed him . He still lacks patience and weak on troubleshooting . Start them young but only if interested .

Nice video !!! It's much easier to break the bead if you put the wheel further out from the main pole. Actually you can remove the bottom cross structure and mount the maine pole directly on the garage floor/drive way.

It's actually not that bad, especially for the price. They weren't really using it right in this video. It's easily the best manual tire changer I've ever used, actually the only one I've used that is decent. There are other videos on RU-vid where it's being used more correctly. There's a few people on eBay selling duckbill mods that make it work as well as an autonomous tire changer. But they usually ask more than twice the $50 this this tire changer sells for at Harbor Freight tools..
