NOT Ultra Lightweight , NOT Budget and doesn't fit in a 2 L Backpack | My backpacking gear list

A run through of my wild camping kit following the Aviemore to Perth trip. Had a few requests for this so here it is , nothing super sexy I'm afraid, no ultra light kit, no kit on a budget, no new to market kit, no fitting it all in a tiny rucksack. Afraid its a little boring !

Didn't realise the amount of gear yourself and others use and the amount it must cost.makes our appreciation of yourself and others much higher and feel lucky we just turn on the TV and watch. got the same socks like..

I go lighter with most of my kit than you Murray, but I reckon when you reach my age you might too... One thing I really like about your gear is that you're not constantly changing for the 'Next New Thing' like so many other RU-vidrs, but get decent usage out of it (including those hideous yellow trews!). You're right to highlight Electricals as the heaviest category of items in many packs, and while it's fine for folks to tramp around with a mini-branch of Dixons on their back if that's what they choose to do, my view is that it's largely unnecessary. We seemed to get by well enough before this stuff was invented. However, I'm always mindful that you're shouldering several kilos of extra equipment in order to bring us your videos, the finest of their kind, for which I am humbly grateful!

A useful video for sure Murray. It's just interesting to see what other people use. I did spot on your walking video that you had the emergency device. It's something I've been considering for a while. It's like many things though, expensive until the day you need it. 🙂

Firstly, your Channel is absolutely superb, you camera work and footage shows the utmost best of the breataking views of the Scotish Mountains and the (views are beyond breathtaking). I have been wanting for so long for you to show and review your equipment that you use, and the Trap-tent Scarp-1 and the Terra nova voyager are my favroute tents that I use mostly all year round and the Lanshan for long trails like coast to coast, Cleaved way, Pennine way etc. I try to cut a little weight from my pack but something els ends up inside instead... lol. Your backpack is a great choice due to been lightweight for 70 Ltr pack. The Osprey Aether Pro 70 was used by Nirmal Purja in the absolutely incredible documatry of the 14-peaks, 14-of the highest 8000 Moutains in the world climbed in 6-months by Nirmal Purja and his team and incredible achement and broke every mountaineering record in history. I encourage everyone to watch the 14-peaks with Nirmal Purja the man is beyond incredible. kindest regards.... 👍👍👍

I like your thoughts on lightweight or caring too much about lightweight. I’ve seen it too many times people getting caught out because they tried to go light. It is always a compromise but I would rather a heavier pack knowing I have properly functioning or the right amount of kit. I usually go down the lines of I would rather have something and not use it than need something and don’t. Loving the videos. Always handy to know what others are using. 🤙🏼

Lots of good info there Murray. I'm on my second Katadyn water filter. The first one (black) stopped working after one trip. Amazon refunded and I bought the clear one that you have, no problems since, Osprey make great packs and Mountaineering Scotland members can get a massive 40% discount if anyone is interested. I'm with you on comfort versus weight - no point suffering for the sake of a few grammes here and there. ATB Murray

Wow, I love seeing what others use - I never get bored of seeing these. I used to use the same rucksack but the larger the sack then the more is taken along & the heavier the load. I was amazed to see how much kit you lug along. I fit all my winter kit into a 48 litre whilst summer gear squeezes into a 38 litre - both will fit 3 days of food. Im impressed that you carry that lot. Well done.

Excellent insight into your choices of gear Murray. My trips out usually result in electronic gear being the heaviest committment - Of my 12.5kg Skye bag, 3kg was camera and batteries etc.. I'm interested. You have appeared to have made a conscious decision not to be influenced or accept opportunities to advertise 'gear'. What influences your decisions when you make choices of gear to use or wear please? Additionally, a big part of your channel is quality of post production. Perhaps a wee look into editing and interpreting your adventures. And finally - A video every week - That is a lot of your own and family's commitment - How do you manage that part please? Next time you're over Classy Arrochar - gissa shout - maybe help you carry your cameras.. Thanks for sharing as always.. 👊👊👊

Hi Murray. Thanks for this, I had commented on one of your Northern Lights posts on Instagram back in April asking about what gear you use. So it's nice to know that you read the comments and do your best to accommodate us viewers. It really does help to know what works and what doesn't especially nowadays when budgets can be tight and by the time we know something doesn't work its to late. So a pointer in the right direction to practical gear is always a benefit. Keep up the good work.

There’s a reason I have a scarp1 ascent 900, yep you’re to blame. I swapped from other highly regarded brands because you sticking with them is worth way more than most RU-vidrs who seem to discover the best ever tent every week, I know they have to earn a living but…. I don’t regret any of the stuff I bought because you use it so cheers and keep up the good work, now get back out on those hills .

Great to hear the thought process around how you choose your gear - not from a 'I want to do that too' standpoint (as you know there are a multitude of options for every gear 'slot' nowadays), more just to hear your thoughts on the subject. I would love to see an updated video on the boots you use these days - in the market for some new ones so interesting to hear the pros and cons of various options from a real user. Best wishes, Jake.👍

Yeah that Garmin device was new to me so I just now looked it up on their website. It appears to be a sensible compromise between the excess of a smartphone and the inconvenience or downright in the outback, danger, or going without a device at all. Might be something for my household to look into, just at home. Amazing. Enjoy the lovely Lake District.

Lots of useful information there, thank you. I love the woolly Crocs! The Inreach is a great thing, I bought one for my youngest son a few years ago when he went walking in New Zealand on his own. He only used it once, to tell me he was going on a remote mountain walk, but unfortunately he didn't tell me when he had returned. I spent a sleepless night waiting and found out in the morning he was ok when he posted a photo of a cafe where he was having a well- earned cup of coffee! The only other time it was used was when I got a call from California to say his emergency warning had come on on Cadair Idtis in Wales. The man was very nice and assured me that Rory was still moving, though he could have been rolling down the mountain! Anyway it seems the alarm had gone off in his bag. I imagine he had now recycled that device, but I still think is is a good idea

As an OAP, I have plenty of time for training but, somehow, I can't get near the fitness I had 40 years ago. I blame battered mitochondria. The only way I can backpack far now is by severely limiting what I take. Surprisingly, my comfort has not been compromised. Just climb into my wonderful PhD bag if I'm getting cold. My phone is the total of my photography kit and it isn't bad but my video clips aren't in the same league as yours. I'm wondering what you would take if you had to reduce the weight of your photography equipment. What would be a minimal kit for you?

Totally agree with when you have something that works don't change it, I'm still using a pan I've had for 30yrs now 🤣. Look forward to seeing you back in the mountains 👌
