I don't think Stan ever lied to dipper and Mabel coz they never technically asked him if he had a twin brother

I think he reffered to Stanley lying about his identity in general since he basically stole Ford's entire identity, and like the title says: Stan is not what he seems.

He lied when he told them he didn’t steal the nuclear waste.

Also lied that he knew about the weirdness. But in fairness Dipper also lied about not looking for it anymore

That's still called lying by omission, when you intentionally skip over important facts when talking about yourself or someone/something else. And especially so in this case since he stole his brother's name and used his identity

I am quite a fan of the kids not being able to defeat the government agents, the way they’re animated and practically crash into the usual antics of gravity falls with their seriousness, so it builds them up so much as this extremely powerful presence, so of course Dipper and Mabel could only circumvent them and not actually do anything to defeat them

With new context from the Book of Bill, knowing the twins are modeled after Alex and his sister, and his comment about being a child of divorce, it seems that much more likely that the pines twins parents are headed in that exact direction

I believe there’s a bit in either the journal or the book of bill that says their parents were “arguing a lot” and that’s why Mabel didn’t want the summer to end

makes perfect sense that the only reason the president's key didn't come back was because it's comeback got cut

No matter how many times I watch this episode I always audibly gasp whenever Stan goes "The author of the journals...My brother."

There was a time shortly after this episode aired where "The author of the journals" was a meme - and there was one comic in particular where Stan just Appears out of a bowl of cereal and says it - I have no idea where it went but I always think of that when I hear this.

It's interesting that they were planning on using Trembley's key, since it never did end up getting used in the final cut.

They used it in the very episode they got it to unlock Stan from the blockade

I also have a theory that Stan was afraid that the kids will choose the "real" Stanford over him since Shermie apparently never mentioned having another brother. Additional that he staged his own funeral and noone except for their mom came. In the game Stan said he was there when Mabel and Dipper were born and since he had been pretending to be Ford for ~20 years at this point and even said he had to fight Shermie to hold them for a minute longer.. I honestly think that the only reason why the kids were sent to the Mystery Shack was because Stan loved them the second they were born and seemed to have "settled down" as Mr. Mystery. If Ford would have gone as himself I doubt Mabel's and Dipper's parents would have sent the kids to the Shack in the first place, thinking Ford is "too serious" to have kids around.

Rewatching this series, and specifically this episode, knowing what stan has been through and what he is doing and what is at risk at the climax of the episode… it’s powerful seeing the pain in his eyes

11:05 funny thing is that I agree but also this stuck out as something really creepy and scary to me. Like I was genuinely unnerved watching this especially cause it was more realistic true crime stuff. Or as much as this show could do just with the fake ids

There's literally an M Night Shyamalan horror film with this exact plot. A pair of kids go to stay with their estranged grandparents and it's revealed that they're strangers pretending to be their grandparents.
