Something you didn't mention, but I think is good to, is that Investments does not count as 'gaining' resources, so you put the supplies on Investments directly into your resource pool. Editing to say that this is also true for The Red Clock For those that want more than just my word, the Forbidden Knowledge FAQ says: "Moving secrets from Forbidden Knowledge to your resource pool does not count as 'gaining' resources, so can be used in situations where the investigator with Forbidden Knowledge may not otherwise gain resources (such as being at Trapper's Cabin or being engaged with O'Bannion's Thug)." So this can be applied to other effects that "move" supplies and resources, like Red Clock and Investments

This is exactly why Another Day, Another Dollar works as well (Justin was right). The card doesn't cause you to "gain" the resources, it just changes the number of resources you get from setup.

My favorite Preston experience was drawing 3 curse tokens in a row (two of the people I was playing with had dread curse as their basic weakness) aand then the elder sign right after, letting me just pay my way through

I just want to thank Bryn for the correct identification of, and very brave attempt at pronouncing, the shillelagh for Chuck Fergus. I can confirm as an Irish guy that it's pronounced "shillaylee" rather than "shillielee", but that was pretty damn close! Also probably my favourite Druid spell in D&D. My grandfather still has his grandfather's shillelagh, but I just thought of it as a walking stick for years. Little did I know it was used as a club for settling disputes in a "gentlemanly" manner as well!

I love how Preston is getting this attention! I had an absolute blast playing as Preston in my group and we crushed Carcosa with him in our group. To make it all the sweeter, the rest of my group was blown away! They didn't have any faith in him. I played him with a mix of big money and big spend styles. Basically, I'd try to build up a large resource pool for cards like money talks and well connected. When we'd come along a location with a high shroud, Intel report would get the clues. Non elite enemies to take out within two locations? Take them out with small favor. He's just an incredible flex player. From my understanding, there are cards that bypass the family inheritance. "Gain resources" is taken pretty literally because so many cards use that exact phrase. So anything that doesn't say that would just go to your pool. For example, inheritance specifically says to put them in your pool. The red clock aren't resources, but are charges that become resources.

You are correct, anything that says "gain" would put the resources on the inheritance. All other effects go into his resource pool as normal.

Playing Preston forced me to unlearn a good chunk of what I had learned. Pairing him with a more traditional investigator (and one who can also flex) helps, I think.

I build him by focusing on having assets that grants agility to him. Lola Santiago, Peter Sylvestre, track shoes, trench coat, street wise....etc. With the normal stuffs that Preston does and the ability to pass evade tests, he is very strong and independent, not needing too much helps from team mates other than some will power treachery cards,

3:30 - not sure whether Bryn is talking about ‘bypassing’ or ‘buy-passing’ skill tests…

Dario works thematically. He is helping you invest your family inheritance for high yields.

19:00 The biggest problem with that is you don't have a player window to get the resource from Madame Labranche between seeing the card you want to cancel and playing ward of protection. I suppose you could do it during the enemy phase or at start of upkeep, but that would be a hell of a called shot.
@anaphysik
@anaphysik 2 года назад
On the contrary, using Madame Labranche during the upkeep phase (or during any other player window after your turn but before end of round) would just be a regular part of the game-cycle in such a set-up. Since the resource goes on Family Inheritance, it wouldn't turn off Dark Horse; since Family Inheritance only discards resources at the end of your turn, you'd always be able to have that resource during Mythos; and since Family Inheritance simply adds 4 resources (it doesn't discard and then add) you'd effectively just be getting 5 resources on Family Inheritance every round, with the bonus 1 a bit 'earlier' than usual (technically later-than-usual on the very first round this occurs, but the initial 1-turn delay is negligible for the utility provided, so it's fine to shift perception). Even if you don't use the bonus resource in Mythos/another investigator's turn, you can still use it just-like-normal on your own turn. Anyway, keeping up A Test of Will(1) for need-to-stop cards would be the obvious application, rather than Ward. Alternatively, with a resource sink like Streetwise, one could just choose to gain a natural resource during upkeep after getting the Labranche resource, and have Counterespionage/Perseverance/etc active during every Mythos, with the ability to spend the two resources away if needed.

15:35 Red-Gloved Man is a 500% increase, not 600%. That what you get for using daddy's money to get through school. I'm really surprised that Look what I found, LWIF(2), Dumb Luck, and Dumb Luck(2) weren't given a shoutout as effectively-testless cards. These allow Preston to cheese low-difficulty tests for significant value. LWIF is obviously a staple that can complement clue-finding with Intel Report, but Dumb Luck is pretty notable for specifically Preston given that the resource cost isn't an issue and it even acts as encounter deck defense (putting the enemy on top effectively blanks an encounter draw next round; putting it on bottom with level-2 is basically just defeating it, and 3-or-less difficulty isn't hard to find). Amusingly, Preston could even combine Stealth/Stealth3 with Dumb Luck to fling away even 4/5-evade enemies! And obviously Old Key Ring + Look what I found is a combination that expands the testlessness, especially as LWIF is very Double-Double-able or Scrounge-for-Supplies-able just like the other events (but is much more affordable to repeat/recur -- and the survivor ones are Resourceful-able).

I wish that Preston wasn’t so niche of an investigator. I understand that giving him a build guide is helpful, but he makes me sad compared to how well Jenny Barnes became after they released Green Man Medallion
@markusschmidt9260

Didn't they release the novel before the Dunwich Deluxe? I have no experience with the promo signatures, but in my plays, Preston was the MUCH better version of Jenny. Sure, his stats are even more garbage than hers, but he also gets more money to compensate for that. So he is even more focused on pay to win.

@@markusschmidt9260 he requires an action each time he wants to use any of the resources he generates, and every card that gets him any additional resources requires a second action to even be put to use. He has too many loopholes to make him better. The extra experience generated from GMM and Charon’s Obol allowed to build into the better resource cards at a rate that also didn’t stop her from additionally getting better cards for her role, which was the fighter. So by the time scenario five had rolled around she was so far ahead that they bought a relic hunter in case the gold pocket watch came up while her lucky cigarette case was already in play. There was a major question as to whether or not Another Day, Another Dollar would be worth it, and is going to be part of her second scenario path. She’s so good that running her through a second scenario with all that trauma is still worth it, especially with so many great support cards in edge of the earth
@markusschmidt9260
@markusschmidt9260 2 года назад
@@stevenburton7725 You seem to have missed an important point of Preston: He can use resources right from his Inheritance. Only, if he wants to store them for the next rounds, he has to take an action to transfer them.
@markusschmidt9260
@markusschmidt9260 2 года назад
@@stevenburton7725 For reference, Family Inheritance states: Resources on this card may be spent as if they were in your resource pool.

@@markusschmidt9260 it also goes away, meaning that he can’t keep it without said extra actions. Yes, you can always let that money disappear, and allow your Well Connected to be reset to double your base stats, or waste an action to not make your Faustian Bargain Unscrupulous Loan or Hot Streak disappear. I will take the better base stats, the best use of Savant in green, and averaging 4-6 extra experience each scenario. Not to mention better health with the same sanity.
