I've used the Notes app in IOS since 2016. I press the Talk to Siri button on my Kia's steering wheel while driving and say "Note to self" and Siri opens the Note app and says "what do you want it to say?" and Siri transcribes the note into Note app and reads it back to me if it is long enough. It can even read back previous notes one at a time if I so choose. Secondly, I almost always use the mic button to enter text in Notes and Google Keep and other apps as well since it is much easier to speak than to one finger type. Thirdly, the default type face is Bold Title type face but if you once select Subheading Not Bold it will stay at that type face until you change it even when using voice input. I have used and loved both Google Keep and Notes for years and find them very valuable and they even work with my Apple Watch.
I've just recently discovered your channel. Lately I am watching a new video each day. I am an old person who began programming back in the 70s and retired in 2000. Technology today has advanced so far beyond my skill set. Now, you are helping me join the 21st century. Thanks, Proper Honest Tech.
@@AlexisRanae - Thank you, Alexis. Yes, I grew up with dial telephones and black and white television. I still have my 64K, 80C85-based computer in my closet. Mostly I like the new technology but what I miss is being able to write programs and run them and I knew everything that was going on inside the computer. I was programming IBM mainframes back in the early 70s. It wasn't until around 2000 that PCs caught up to the sophistication that the mainframes had even in the Early 70s. Today, I'm just blown away with how the machines have advanced. One cool thing, though, is knowing that some code I wrote way back in that day is still running today because memories were so small and processors so slow, efficiency of code was required, and that efficiency is still required today for some applications. Blessings to you!
I chatted with someone recently who has a similar story to yours. He described having to print the compiled byte code onto some sort of film and learning assembly language was how you got the hardware to do the needful. Was a very interesting conversation.
Another fine video. Thank you. I was a long time Evernote user since 2008, with a few years of OneNote recently. I’ve since moved my ‘Second Brain’ over to Apple Notes and love it. Love the way it integrates so well with other Apple apps, such as Reminders. Plus search is surprisingly good. Only minor gripes , I’d love to see the OneNote feature of being able to do numeric calculations on notes . Also I do miss the ‘infinite’ canvas of OneNote. But only minor issues . Apple notes is excellent.
What a great video, I learnt so much about Notes, it really is quite impressive what can be done, thanks for making this very informative video. Subscribed!
To add to this I noticed another feature of shared notes. If you got to the contact you’ve shared with in messages, you’ll see a status change if they make amendments to a note. 😊
Thanks for sharing! My one feature request, would be to allow links to other notes inside of a note. That’s what paid apps like Roam, Mem, Napkin, and even free ones like Obsidian and Logseq do now. It seems like such a simple thing when compared with linking to emails, maps, and contacts… maybe they will soon 😢
How does your brain not explode. You have infinite knowledge on IOS. I haven’t updated to 16yet but am looking forward to utilising some of these functions. Thanks heaps.
I can't get thé suggest app link feature in quick notes to work, even with the suggested settings enabled. Not sure what's up. Edit: worked from Mail, but not Safari
I have tried to lock a note with secure items and images in it, it wont lock because its been created before iOS 16 it seems? Any advice please…? Great info here.
Me at start of your videos: "I think I've got a good grasp on this subject". Me throughout the next 20 minutes: "It does that? -- I can do it that way? -- That'll save me some time!" Thanks so much!!
I was looking for a way to ditch Evernote and find a great alternative. Some are expensive, cumbersome, overwhelming, underwhelming and there is Notes… I exported my enex notebooks and imported every single notes to Notes. Added some tags to every note imported and created smart folders, and the job is done. The search function is amazing. Please make a video on Apple product sinergies (notes/reminder/mail/calendar/shortcuts) etc… there’s a whole productivity ecosystem that people aren’t aware of. Congratulations on a great job you did here 👏🏻👏🏻
That would be an amazing video. One to combine it all. It’s just like learning a new language. I want to be at the point where I am not thinking about translation, just doing it auto. I’m working on it, but help would be appreciated.
Consistently good presentations in these Proper Honest Tech videos. I'm impressed. Good info, well presented, and no annoyingly visible efforts to seem clever and cool. Just good info presented knowledgeably in a straight-forward manner. Thanks.
I absolutely love Apple Notes. There are just 2 things that I'd like them to do: - Just like you mentioned, allow Smart Folders to be nested into one another - I already have folders like that so allowing them to be Smart Folders would just make things easier and quicker. - Being able to record and replay recordings that are synced with notes, like you can in Notability.
Very much agree and ephasize the ability to nest folders. Perhaps its their way of not creating a duplicate. I would add noe that freeform is available the ability to share a note directly to freeform would be much appreciated and remive the steps of copy and paste as it can be done but clunky
Bravo! Excellent presentation; polished and showing deep understanding of the subject-you are a great teacher. Refreshingly free of the superficial gimmickry that many “productivity’’ channels now engage in. As a note taking power user - must agree that Notes is now at a point that it is a compelling first choice app. Finally, keep up the excellent work.
Thanks for another excellent video. Something I love about Google Keep is the ability to set a range of background colours to notes, which I don’t believe Apple Notes does. I use Google Keep for capturing and accessing information on the go, so found the colour coding really useful.
I adore your videos. Your content is always so good, to the point and no BS. I used to use Notion and Evernote, and to be fair neither can integrate seemingly with IOS. I exported my notes out of Notions and put them back into Apple Notes. With drag and drop from a note into reminders, I can link them. Love you work.
Goodness… I learnt so much during your video! I love how clear your instructions are, and hadn’t realised the usefulness of Notes. I have successfully tried out all your suggestions! Thank you for an excellent tutorial. It was new to me there were options within the control centre… so have made that more relevant to me too - thanks to you!
Hey thanks for a really great tutorial on Notes! Since you ask for suggestions on improving stuff in general in the iOS realm, I do have something to offer though obviously it is up to Apple to work on the improvements. Similar to how Notes has been improved over time incrementally to become a relatively sophisticated tool I think what is also in dire need to be worked on is the Contacts app! I have found it to be very useful in categorizing information having to do with specific people or companies. In the notes section below the contact, I put in a lot of Information as needed, but I have found it very finicky as well as problematic when I want to add a picture or anything more complicated than just plain text, that could add significant information relative to the contact. I think that a lot of work needs to be done to this app to bring it up to date, including enhancing the fields that are available within the database as well as its ability to cross reference between the apps of the ecosystem the way the Notes app can now do. Thanks for your time.
I’m a fan of Apple Notes and use it daily. If I could add one feature it would be a REMINDER function similar to use of @ with Notion. I enjoyed this video and learned a couple of tricks. Thanks.
Only lean pure helpful information,no hype, no fat. One thing to add that the “suggest app link” with quick notes will not work if you are using private browsing mode in Safari.
Hi, Tom. This one is good. Thanks. I like and use Notes a lot. What I miss here is ability to copy/move note to calendar event. What we can do is to copy whole text (Cmnd C - Cmnd V) we have in note then move it to existing calendar event but what I mean is to have a quick action/button to do so. For example any Note - 3dot section and click to add to calendar event or create new event just right from the note app. I hope one day we get this as a gift from Cupertino.
Would love to see some easy ways to remind me of a note at a certain day/time and/or automatically show all the tasks spread over hundreds of notes in a single overview. Otherwise all those tasks buried deep in a note will be forgotten.
Great video, haven’t updated to iOS 16 yet, but have been using Notes app for a few years now as it’s much improved. However, one thing that bugs me is creating a new folder, then having to move it to become a subfolder, why can’t I just create it exactly where I want? 😡.
excellent review. you took notes from a 'hardly used app' to one that is 'quite powerful' by sharing your knowledge/insight on how to use; much appreciated
I have got to say I have been really enjoying and learning from your videos about all the things that I can with my phone. Didn’t even think about all the ways I could use the different apps and features of my phone until I saw your vids! Thanks❤
I’d like to see the “notes” part of Reminders tied to Notes. Guessing you’d have to make better use of smart folders to make that work great. But it would reduce the confusion of backtracking to an older note/item without wondering which app to start in… while simultaneously improving the functionality of reminders notes. For instance, when you create a reminders list, you could choose to make a notes folder (or subfolder) to sync to it.
I have a question. First off - fantastic video as always! It used to be that you could “copy link” in a note and use that link to navigate between notes within the Notes app. Since upgrading to iOS 16, I no longer see that feature. Do you know if it was removed, or am I just not seeing it? If it was removed, do you know of any workarounds to link between notes within the Notes app? Thanks again for another great video!
A word of warning on the 'scan documents' function. These scanned documents are not saved anywhere else. If you accidentally delete the document within the note (but not the note itself), there is no way for you to recover it. I discovered this issue, much to my chagrin, after scanning and marking up some 30 different documents on a work trip.
No thanks. I’d been using Evernote off and on since 2008, but 5 months ago I imported all my files from EN to AN after hearing a few rave review videos about AN. It sounded like a great way to access my notes etc while saving myself $100/yr. The iOS 16 update corrupted my data set, messed up syncing with my other Apple devices and I ended up going back to EN. No amount of talking to Apple Geniuses helped. Fortunately I had backups so was able reconstruct but that did take some time and effort. Be careful before you make any switch. It may burn you.
Good informative content. They should give option to have coloured headings, not sure if that’s available. I use that to visibly know which of my note is important or against others in a folder In a third party app
Oh, nice. I hadn't tried the tables feature and yeah it'll be good if they start including some basic summing functions. I'd also forgotten about the shapes formalising feature! Thanks for these 👍
perfect presentation, well spoken, formulated and articulated, outstanding. This is a real help, thanks a lot for your time to set this up. I will try to support you (I have to find out how this works😉)
I REALLY wish that Apple would allow NOTES functionality extended to the Apple Watch...so many times that I've wanted to (e.g.) look at a grocery list that I dictated at home when I'm in the store...
The main thing everyone need to know about Notes app is that you should avoid using it all together. The reason for that is that you are unable to use notes you made in Notes app efficiently on non Apple device so it is locking you down on the Apple's ecosystem making you to continue buying their products. Just like Americans suffer with iMessage/sms right now. So if you are considering using Apple Notes, you must know that you'll regret that eventually. I'd recommend avoid using notes, reminders and icloud contacts from Apple. You can use any cross platform alternatives and always have an access to your stuff from ANY device and OS. Instead of icloud contacts you can use Google contacts - you'll have your contacts synced between all of your phones (devices), not just Apple devices.
Thank you ... appreciate... I am using Note now than put everything in Ms Word. Do you have video for Pges, Numbers and Keynotes? And could we put reminders todo in Calendar days?
Thank you so much Foote such a in depth explanation of ALL the features of NOTES App! I’ve been subscribed for about a year! Thank you not speaking so quickly which I’ve found in other YT’ers videos and that just tired me out and makes me not want to v watch
Hi I’m a senior and not very technical. How do I find out what iOS version I am running? Thank you very much. I’d like to use notes for my shopping list. I shop at several different stores.
Very informative video and it all sounds very useful except…almost none of the features you talk about are in the Notes app on my iPhone 13 with iOS 16. No “new folder” button, no ellipsis menu, no text editing tools - It’s like my phone has a very old version of notes. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Is it cumbersome or too complicated to include some info on what past Iphones these features are not available on? For instance, I tried to find the the "scan text" on my iphone 7 and had to search ("IOS on Iphone 7") to find out that the Iphone 7 support was dropped with IOS 16. If it is and it is relevant, maybe you could ask your subscriber community to do the work for you on their own phones and send their results to you for inclusion in to your video "More..." section. (Yes, I know I should upgrade sometime soon. But I'm not buying any green bananas either, if you get my drift.)
When I am in Safari or Maps and I start Quick Notes, no button appears at the top to add a link to the app. However, I do get the option when I start Quick Notes from Mail or from iMessage. I am running the latest iPhone (13 Pro) IOS version 16.1 and have ensured that the settings for suggesting an app link are toggled ON. I looked in the Safari settings but couldn't find anything that would prevent the link. I don't understand why it works for Maps and iMessage, but not for Safari and Maps.
Found your channel recently. Really good presentation from a true Brit. You from Cornwall? Or was that a random Safari page? Anyway. Glad I found this. I have already passed on to a friend. I’ve tried loads of other apps in the past, but have settled on the fact that Apple done properly is the best option for me. Thank you.
Thank you for all your videos, you are great at explaining what you are doing and why. I have a quick question about notes. Previously I thought I was able to open up notes and it would default to the "Folders" page where I see all my lists but now it opens to a new note. I have played with the settings but can't get it to open to the Folders page. Thank you for your time.
Not sure if this is still an issue for you, but sharing in case others are having the same issue. I noticed that if the Notes app is closed with a note or blank new note open, reopening the app will take you to the last open note. However, if it’s open to subfolders before closing, it will default to the Folders view. Hope this helps!
@@Majestic_rains Hi Jessica, I appreciate your response. It is not fixed, I always go back to Folders section. Interestingly enough because of your response I checked something. I opened notes by going to search where I see notes icon because I just opened it and it goes to folders but if I open notes from the control center it opens a new blank note? Any feedback would be appreciated, thank you.
This App is really amazing I am learning every day I am using it for work Daily inputting and deleting regularly When I have a check box note I was able to pick the whole checkbox note and move it to another area on my over all not One time when I did this a + sign appeared and I realized I was not just moving but making a copy I don’t know what I am doing that is different move a copy of the checkbox or move the whole checkbox note Any thoughts?
Love your videos! Maybe someone here can help with a problem I'm having. I use shared notes a lot. I do NOT receive a push notification when changes are made to the notes. I only receive a notification when I open the Notes app... I believe I have all proper settings turned on but it doesn't work. I have notifications on, iCloud notes set to Push. Am I missing something?
Interesting video. I would like to ask you How we can do clip webs to and send to apple notes later if you use for example Google Chrome. For me apple notes it is an amazing tool but I'm working in a mix between windows (PC) and iPhone & iPad
Hi, great video! One question, can you share Locked Notes? I’d like to share financial info with my wife, but would prefer that we could keep the note locked as an additional protection for it.
Does anyone know what "Suggest Notes with App Links Setting" does ; in apple notes settings? Time appox 3.45 in the video. The first setting alone achieves what the video shows
I love notes. However, smart notes drive me crazy. I hate not being able to have “sub folders”. I also don’t understand why you can’t share a Smart Folder.
Very helpful and informative! Question: Is Notes or Tasks the best way to make a shared grocery/shopping list with my wife? Tired of the paper list we keep in the kitchen that someone has to take a picture of and text to me while I'm at the store! 😂
John, I can help here as a Notes user for years, I CANT IMAGINE A BETTER APP TO SHARE A CONSTANTLY UPDATED GROCERY LIST! I have only 2 notes PINNED (GROCERIES & EXPENSES) so they appear every time I open the app without searching and once you share that note with your wife, guving her editing permission, both of you will always have access to it with any changes or edits from the other person highlighted and noted! I promise you will never again find need for anything else, as long as she also is an apple user… And these days who isn’t!? I have almost 1000 notes all organized by topic or folder and now tags have helped too. I can’t wait to use the smart folder feature as that will make it even better Though the video implies collaboration or editing from users you share the note with is a new feature, it isn’t. I have shared individual notes for several years with clients so they could approve my copy and even edit it. I’ve watched it evolve slowly but have always appreciated the ease of which a single note could contain links, video, pictures, sound files, lists, outlines & multiple text styles, … often by accident, the more I used it. The only frustration I found with it was the way markup is used. I had no use for drawing things in it and always wanted to be able to highlight the important text sections which it would not let me do and I just thought I was using it wrong. *THAT would be the only feature I wish Apple would implement. (Btw, PREV USED: Google Keep, ToDo, Alexa Lists, Evernote, One Note, Docs, Todoist, Wunderlist, Carrot… All with initial enthusiasm before disappointment at their limited capabilities. I have never used Tasks but know it’s just single user & not collaborative) Sorry to be so wordy but I wanted you to know I have extensive experience with multiple apps to compare it with, all of which I have thrown to the side never to be used again! Pls let me know how it goes! 🤗
3:47 Under the section APP LINKS I only see enable/disable toggle option for both 1st and 2nd option I dont see the option to to select 'Quick Notes Only'
Thanks for this neat presentation. I’ve learned a lot; the more interesting new feature seems Quick Notes and how it could help in the iOS environment. As others mentioned, a video on the connections between the different Apple apps would be more than welcome. Keep up with your work.
I am curious aboutthe table function. Here are my questions. Is there a size if table option It seems as though you can create a fairly large table. Mine are 6 or seven columns and about 200 rows. I seems like you get less option to insert rows and add text inside the row. So I end that note and start a new one. But the new note and table is a continuation of the material. So I try to name the notes with a number as well and keep all the material in the same folder. So something like linking folders so you can search for material easier. 2. I din’t know why but I get a voice control app showing on my screen. But I have voice control off in settings. I trief to use automation to keep It off without success, I have an iPhone 12.
Notes are great but I found they don’t port over to Apple Watch. I ended up getting Watch Notes so I could dictate list items to my Watch. Great for building a shopping list!
Thank you for your iOS tutorials! I watched one and found myself down a rabbit whole for hours watching and learning! I have been wanting to figure out a good system for organizing my life and to help me remember things and didn’t realize the fools have been in my hands all along! You keep me interested and are so knowledgeable. I appreciate you! 😊
When you make a folder to a smart folder or create a new smart folder and also when using a hashtag in a note, in this case only devices with ios 14 or later can view these folder. I have ios 13 & 16.1 but my ios 13 device couldn’t view smart folders or folders with hashtags, and that’s why I don’t use these awesome features 😢
I do not have that option from Suggest Notes with App Links > it is only a slider on and off, not an option to click on and go into another screen that gives that option you show of > quick notes only or Off. What do I still need to make a change to, to see what you are seeing? I am using IOS16 iphone 13 mini
