The Fates through 4/5ths of the show: We’re just here to remind you how horrible your life is. Don’t expect any advice from us! The Fates during Word To The Wise: here’s exactly how to crush this guy and all of his dreams.

To be fair, Hades knows this all too well, because he hung himself when he made Hadestown. The Fates are internal voices, things the person has in the back of their minds (or at the forefront in some cases).
@carlosalejandroalvarenga4913
They’re hilarious. Cause they sing a song like “don’t blame Eurydice she was going through tough times” while the tough times were literally them bullying her around

If anyone ever doubted that the Fates are the real antagonists of the piece, all you need to do is listen to the malicious glee with which they sing "Word to the Wise." MAN, do they capture the inner voice of doubt!

Some people say Hades is the villain, but I've always disagreed completely. It's the Fates. The Fates are the true villains. They are the storm that causes Euridyce's "death" and convince her to make the deal with Hades and that it's justified. They plant the seeds of doubt in Orpheus's mind (failing during Wait For Me 1, succeeding in Doubt Comes In). And they have Hades wrapped around their little fingers (without him realizing it) and I theorize that they are the real reason that the world was out of tune and manipulated him into building the wall in the first place.

I’ve always thought they are meant to represent the internal monologue of the negative feelings and thoughts of every single one of the characters either way they are the ones who fit the most as the role of the villains. Hades is more like an antagonist, an obstacle Orpheus is able to overcome at the end, yet Orpheus couldn’t overcome his doubt, his own “fates” ended up being his downfall

@@paperbagboi3185 Totally this. Right on the money. Everything in this story is allegory, and it's no different with the Fates. Also, just as a note: the Fates are cosmic entities that have omnipotence. They know that if Orpheus successfully brings Eurydice out of the underworld, everyone else will be able to do it. Like she says in the show: "We'll show them the way". This is not how life and death work in the real world. Orpheus needs to fail, it's how the world works. It's, to a certain extent, for the greater good, to have death be permanent.

@@paperbagboi3185 I agree! Like Hermes says.. The meanest dog you'll ever meet It ain't the hound dog in the street (...) The dog you really got to dread is the one that howls inside your head The fates made me so mad, I cursed them under my breath, then I remembered they're supposed to represent our inner thoughts and doubts and I-- I was just plain speechless, lost in the show. I was mad and angry but also defeated because as much as I wanted to be mad at the characters, I've been there and... sigh. All I could do was sitting back and letting myself get sucked into the show bc thinking about it was driving me mad. (Did I mention I was mad? Because I was LOL)

I’m of the theory Hermes keeps trying to get a different ending and they’re stopping that shit in its track.

I've never heard a pitch change so weirdly seamless. Like they definitely start off on a different key than the one the end on in Nothing Changes. Don't know if that was intentional or not but honestly, it's impressive if it wasn't.
@whovianinthehizzayy

There’s definitely a motif of descent throughout the show, so you may be right and it is intentional.

I think they start in a flat major and end in F minor, so it’s “just” the parallel signature. But very impressive anyways!

these are my two favorite songs and i love that in some parts you can hear the middle harmony really well bc that's the one i have the hardest time picking out in the cast recording (yes i am musically challenged don't come for me lol)

Fates were actually goddesses who spun the strings of fate for all humanity It is so freaking smart for Hadestown to use them as "manipulators" so they not only spin the threads of fate, but force the characters to act the way the Fates want them to

I absolutely not a fan of fear, doubt, & anxiety; but I adore these ladies! It so amazing to have such synced harmonies, but still switch to their own unique voices at the drop of a dime. The Voice & Tune Control!

Word to the Wise sounds a bit strange because they missed a line after, "Gotta think quick." someone says, "Gotta save face" then it's followed by "Stuck between a rock and a hard place."

The fates are my favourite ❤️ Do you have to be an Alto to be a Fate? Or is it any voice type?
@RandomGuy-fq4ui
@RandomGuy-fq4ui 4 года назад
Sofia P According to the Hadestown tour casting call, Fate #1 (Yvette/the woman on the right) is a soprano, then Fate #2 (Kay/ the woman on the left) can be played by an alto, a mezzo or a soprano so long as she has the range and Fate #3 (Jewelle/the woman in the middle) is a low alto. It is worth noting Jewelle herself has said she considers herself a contralto and the timbre of her voice is super dark but as far as I’m aware fate #3 does not need to be played by a contralto.
