I saw two bucks chasing an obviously hot doe toward the ridge where the 10 pointer I am hunting is living. I wasn't sure if one of the bucks was him - it was a long ways off - so I went up on the ridge for a quick afternoon hunt to see if the doe was still in the area.

Morning Bill, Love your show since Midwest Whitetail.. Still following you everyday as I enjoy your passion as it is my. For years I've never heard you cuss or scream out bad gestures n that's what I love about your shows. If I ever come across to that region, I would love to come meet you if it is possible, I have families living in La cross WI. Thanks again for all the experience n knowledge you've shared..

I appreciate it AimTrue. Of course, this time of year is pretty tough, timewise, but during the off-season it is a lot easier to find extra time. La Crosse is only about 30 minutes from the farm. Have a great day.

Love the channel. Seems like a great property, but access to stands is difficult. And where is Jordan? Disappearing act. Hope she’s okay! Ethan, let’s get that Buck man!

I am still working on the farm. Tough access in general because of the terrain. Jordan separated her shoulder, unfortunately, and has not been hunting and now she has a stress facture in your pelvis from running. She is on the mend but hopefully will be back hunting soon. Thanks for the comment and the support.

If you got deer every time you went out it'd be called Gettin' not Hunting, lol. Thanks for the update, Bill! I've carried a bow since 1972 and I'm still learning.

@@bill-winke I remember reading one of your articles in a magazine (probably back in 2005 or 2006) and you said bucks will use the lowest point in a field to cross, even if it is just slightly lower than the rest of the field. So driving back and forth to work, as the road crossed some fields I picked out the low point. Sure enough, one day in early November, driving to work, an absolute monster buck, charges across the road, in daylight, at that very same low point to get to the doe bedding area on the other side. That experience convinced me you knew what you were talking about and I've followed you ever since.

What power binos do you recomend and for different set ups? Any particular models? Affordable? ( yeah I know you get what you pay for, some if us aren't on a Zeiss budget).
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 9 месяцев назад
I always carried Nikon's mid-price binos even when they would have given me their top end models. You don't need the really good glass for whitetail hunting. You do for western hunting where you may be glassing for hours, but a decent mid-priced model from companies like Bushnell, Vortex or Nikon is just fine. You should get all you need for around $250 to $350. The cheaper models will work too, but the experience won't be quite as good. I really like rangefinding binos. That eliminates having to carry a separate rangefinder, but that does add cost. I like 10x40 binos because they are a good balance between light gathering and the ability to see detail. I use the binos not only to see a distant deer better, but also to scan open fields before I cross them to make sure there are no deer in them. The binos gather enough light to make that possible. Good luck.

Are you a strong believer in Ozonics and it’s effectiveness?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 9 месяцев назад
In blinds I do think it works because the ozone has more time to mix with scent molecules. I am not sure in the tree. Good luck.
@thebadboo4875

Ozone works great on clothes and gear, especially between hunts when you are not doing a full wash. My son had a doe sniff his arm first time he ever used it.

Been following your work for 30 years and appreciate so many of your philosophies and tactics including your high power bow setup. What is your current arrow weight and velocity? I was estimating 550 grains and 300 fps. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 9 месяцев назад
Troy, you are pretty close. I have not weighed it or checked speed, but those numbers seem very reasonable. It will shoot through a whitetail stem to stern, I do know that! I want to shoot as much weight as I can accurately handle because if you do happen to hit them in the shoulder, you still get a clean kill. That also affects my broadhead choices. I am testing the B3 Destrukt 3 blade. That thing has great promise for both accuracy, penetration and good blood trails. Thanks for your years of support. Have a great day.

I didnt think you bought into the scent gimmics. Is your daughter not hunting this year?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 9 месяцев назад
Ozone isn't a gimmick, especially not in a blind where the unstable oxygen molecules have time to mix with scent molecules. That technology is proven as it has been used to remove odors from many things (including cars owned by smokers) for decades. I am not sure how well it works in the tree, though. But in the blind, it makes a lot of sense. Jordan's shoulder is still on the mend. Hopefully she will be hunting soon. Thanks for asking.

Bill, do you run the OZONE while the windows are shut? I worry about the molecules eating away the alveolar lung tissue. @@bill-winke

I have not seen a deer one in 3 weeks. Did most all day sits over the opening rifle weekend, this past weekend. Nothing. Is it lockdown or pressure... heck anymore I can't tell. And most bucks around mid Missouri didn't drop horns until April some May... is the rut later and this global warm up pushing the rut back. I'm so lost anymore. With 25 plus years of hunting anymore I am lost on what the deer are doing.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 9 месяцев назад
I think how they move changes a bit every year for no reasons we really understand. I do believe that the breeding still takes place at roughly the same time every year. It is just a matter of when and how much they move. I am not sure anyone has the answer to that one. Could be your area doesn't have as many deer as it used to. Changing human interaction and changing land use can really impact deer behavior too. Good luck.

Hi Bill Here in Massachusetts, the rut has been very, very slow. Not sure if it’s a trickle rut or even if it had begin, I have not seen many bucks cruising during the day hours or even chasing those and I’ve been in the woods every day not sure if it’s even started yet Is anyone else experiencing the same as I am? Does not seem like the rough has kicked on. The big bucks I had on Camera have been ghosted the last two weeks Any idea what could be happening from York experience?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 9 месяцев назад
I think it is happening on schedule (like it always does) but for some reason the mature bucks just aren't moving much. I am not sure why, but I am hearing it from a lot of people. The more I do this, the less I seem to know. Every year seems a bit different in how much they move. Strange too because I don't have a lot of does so I would think the bucks would have been searching more aggressively.

@bill-winke
@bill-winke 9 месяцев назад
Don, I don't use it. I have never really tried to make it work so I just keep doing what I do. Maybe I am missing out on something, but it never seem to make sense to me to leave a human scent trail when trying to leave a deer scent trail. There are spots where you can avoid the human scent, but it sure takes some extra time and effort to find those and get the scent down. Just putting scent out by the stand never seemed to make sense to me either. I always try to set up where no deer can smell me, so for that reason, they wouldn't be able to smell the attractant either. The only exception would be if you have a scrape (mock or otherwise) close to your stand that would allow you to possibly get a better shot at a buck that is passing. That makes a lot of sense - reposition him for a good shot. Good luck.
