It’s like a representation of picking through the corpse of past you, and picking and choosing what you want so you can go into the future. At every stage of life you evolve and from that evolution comes a new you, and with every step a new corpse of your last self to pick attributes from that you want to keep or just can’t bring yourself to get rid of. It’s just my interpretation of how I feel when I watch it. It makes me think about recovering (as much as you can) from depression and just how painful that can be.
Yea, to me it feels like he's looking at past memories [or a past version of himself?] and picking stuff up to go to the future. "Pack light." Like, don't weigh yourself down with trauma or pain? "That one didn't work out so well." Something that must've happened. As much as it hurts, you can't move forward with zero memory. But can't move forward with only pain exactly. I guess fear and excitement could be mirrors. Anticipation, in negative and positive. It does look like a fever-dream, though.
1:33 fun fact, nervousness and excitement are both pretty much the same, the only difference is nervousness is associated with fear and excitement is associated with joy. If you can convince yourself you are excited and not scared, you will actually feel excitement.
I remember watching this New Year’s Eve. When I was still optimistic of the year. Watching it now makes feel upset how horribly the year is going so far.
remembering your experiences in the “then” you. choosing which ones to carry forward and remember that are dear to you. (the heart.) but also acknowledging the bad ones. you bring them along too, because they’re what made you learn. / acknowledging the time passed. (the clock) “pack lightly” meaning, don’t dwell on the then or the now. focus more on the present. the empty spot in which the “now” you thinks is anxiety that the caption says “you’re excited” backwards... that i think is the exhilaration of moving forward. it isn’t really excitement, but you don’t feel as if it’s anxiety either. you tell yourself it’s excitement. but it is backwards because you are still uncertain. that’s what i got, at least. edit: some spelling and grammar errors cuz i’m a poopyhead and typed this hella fast
It's so intense and makes you feel the pain yourself! It reminds me of that scene in 127 hours when he cuts his arm off and hits a nerve and a really high-pitched ring sounds
This is my favorite Jack Stauber video by far. The perfect representation of pain, the denial of anxiety, and the "pack light" sign- it's all just so good!
I think he’s trying to figure out how to feel and act by copying and “stealing” mannerisms and emotions from someone else (probably someone he’s attached to), since he suffers from depression/derealization/some sort of dissociative disorder. It seems to be hurting the other person somehow though, hence the stabbing and blood, not to mention he’s hurting himself by being someone he’s not. The words are also telling him what to do and how to feel because it’s his internal monologue trying to help him live normally.
@@transgenderism.isreal no its him before AND DURING his depression he takes the things he liked from his old self but he still keeps the anxiety in him
Xanthias Akrin, aka DDSN or dedeEssen Nahhhh, I know what existential dread feels like. Its like some weird middle ground between fear, happiness, sorrow and acceptance that I cant really describe.
Has anyone else noticed that this is traditional animation? You can even see the cel at 0:23 (for those who don’t know, a cel is a transparent sheet of plastic on which parts of the animation are drawn. You can see the one where the arm is drawn, moving). Also it looks like this was shot on film first, but I’m not sure.
I love how instead of showing the main character, stabbing himself to open himself, he just uses sounds in imagery. It really makes it to where I can almost feel it.
It took me exactly 4 years for me to understand what "pack light" meant. I kept thinking they meant "pack/get a light" but its "don't get too many things". Can't believe it took me that long, I've use that phrase myself...
jack stauber is the only person that can make me feel like i wanna crawl outside my skin and set myself on fire but also make me feel like i’m at home with hot cocoa on a cold day
Your sound design is literally the best I have ever seen (or I guess heard) Seriously, from the dark ambiance in the background, to the disorienting chaotic noise for pain, it is literally perfect. I especially like the sounds when the main guy was rustling around in then's corpse for parts. It felt weirdly fleshy and organic while simultaneously being clacky and mechanical. It's hard to describe but I thought it was nice.
I'm simply baffled by how he makes the sound in these, they're straight out of the more surreal and scary parts of old independent cell animation. I mean, the fact that he was able to make this look like old surreal cell animation is still baffling to me, like the bits where you can see the cell moving as if this was a low budget production back in the 70's or 80's. With the VHS gradient and the dirty colors, hhis just feels so...weirdly nostalgic. But it's the sound and music that amazes me the most.
I think he actually does use archaic techniques, materials, and equipment to create the visuals, which is also true of the way he makes music and sound effects.
He has a small playlist of how he makes some music I want to too but I need alts for the software FL studio because it's pricey for the recording FL studio version
my theory: i think jack is telling that if u die u can only bring you're heart (feelings, memories) and books(you're knowledge) so it tells to pack light cause once u die u cannot bring all your belongings in the after life, when he grabs the clock he says '''it really doesn't work that well'' i think jack pointing here is that time is endless in the afterlife but he still bring it because he is still not ready for the afterlife i think he needed more time to spend his ''time'' so the anxious is appearing from his inner but the system tells him that he's excited even though we can see the looks in his face. Jack Stauber is messing with my mind
I've watched this on repeat 15 times over. Idk why, but the character design is really pleasing to me as well(in a twisted way). Another great work from Jack ^^ one of my favorites from him now oddly enough
Everyone loves how he depicted pain, what I'm in love with is the depiction of anxiety; a swirling ball of nothingness that still manages to fill your chest, right by your heart
@@Bruhmomentos0979 I've heard about a thing in therapy where you label anxiety as excitement to trick your brain, kinda like smiling when you're sad. I'm guessing Stauber was referencing that?
Moral: You've got to solve your problems and your conflicts before they start to pack together and not just ignore them, otherwise you won't be able to hold them anymore and you'll make things go into a worsening loop. Even if facing your problems hurts you have to prevent that from happening and that means face up what is wrong with your life.
Superior Block || it’s an indie game created by Steve Gabry. It’s not that long of a game, I recommend watching a play through or playing it yourself. A lot of youtubers have played it.
Fuck Sally Face, play the OG game in that universe: Fran Bow. But yeah, Jack being the art designer on a macabre psychological point-and-click would be insanely good.
I really relate to this Digging in search for something to make you feel Having to hurt yourself to get one ounce of emotion and that’s the only thing you get Having a voice in your head telling what to do and how much emotion you can feel at all He opened the dead body to get an organ to feel Someone said “Pack light.” To let him know, one thing, one thing only
This is what I got out of this: Taking from the past only what you need and leaving what didn't work properly (growth). Growth is painful but it doesn't have to be a nightmare. The old you is dead, take what worked and leave what killed you. Learn from mistakes. Anxiety and excitement produce the same chemicals but it's all in how we perceive it... and if we can regulate our emotions properly... we may not have learned how in childhood but each moment brings opportunity for change/growth. Anxiety usually is triggered when something threatens what/who we love and care about / threatens our vulnerabilities... something close to the heart. Anxiety for the future or excitement for the future? What will be placed in the empty places in your being is up to you... fill it with good things since life is short.
Do you have any examples of this? This animation gives me a weird sense of nostalgia for the late 70s to earlier nineties, (even though I wasn't born until the 2000s.) I really want to see more stuff like this. The closest thing I can find are some of the Mark Baker animations of the 60s and 70s.
This is the new self taking from the old self. He’s keeping parts of his old self and his old self is represented as being dead, and change as being painful. What’s disturbing is that they say to pack lightly
A kid from discord grabbed my IP and booted me offline for 10 minutes. My parents used the same WiFi and didn’t know I had discord so I had horrible anxiety I never had before. I couldn’t sleep and when I did I even tried to tell myself I was happy. But I wasn’t.
Yee Haw Your joking, but I actually agree. People act like a ball dropping is going to magically instill the determination needed to better themselves. It doesn’t. It’s better to make changes without making it feel special, because then, when you inevitably fall off, it’s much easier to jump back on at any point.
its about moving on from painful experiences and learning to cope and stuff… its unpleasant to have to go back but its important and you kinda have to learn to live with it in order to go on
@@wolfie1703 what would that mean? like, why would he need the clock? and why didn't it work out well? Sorry for all the questions, I'm not the brightest person lol
Ngl but yes!! I agree but it'll be a tough budget and Jack has to do lots of body movement to come up with stuff. Like back flips and such. XD he is going to be very lively
Why can't people be happy with what it is. Someone always wants an extended version or a video game or a horror movie. Bunch of ungrateful demanding shitlarks.
my interpretation is that the corpse is the same guy as the walking one, just that the corpse is what is about to be his past self from this year. when the guy commits organ steal he's seeing what feelings, or maybe even traits, that he should take into the next year. the clock may be symbolizing his internal clock, like he's abandoning harmful habits? (sleep or eating problems, maybe?) either way, it still hurts to make the incision and move on from the past year. and then at the end when he is apparently not anxious, but excited, it might be because he "packed light" and didn't carry as many vices or baggage. mayyybe. (or a mix of anxiety and excitement, though, just labeling it as the latter for a better outlook) could very well be wrong but yknow!
There's no wrong answers, that's what makes a Jack Stauber video feel weird. It's also nice to see how different peoples lives change their perspective on what a video could mean
Yeah, seeing that part where he asked "anxious?" But it told him he was excited... i get like that. I have such extreme anxiety that i cant just be excited anymore, i have to worry too. Theyre one in the same for me.
jack really portrays emotions nicely, the part where the man stabs himself and hesitates then there's this weird wavy red, yellow, etc. background (also fitting colors) which is supposed to be pain is really cool
The DM: The imp lays before you, having been slaughtered in its birthday suit. Me: I loot the body. DM: It's not wearing anything. Me: And? DM: .... (Sigh) ... Roll investigation.
@@vixticant8968 Encounter: The Devourer. A huge, grotesque beast that literally eats everything in sight. If it succeeds on a saving throw in combat with a ranged attack, the weapon is consumed, or the magic spell is consumed and spit back towards the nearest player. Sounds like a fun homebrew.
Jack Stauber is one of the greatest artists I have ever seen. He makes music and videos that make you question your reality. They impact you, leaving a mark every time. I hate that most of my peers only know him because of one of his songs (Buttercup) when he is much more than that. To Jack Stauber, I love you. Keep being the best at what you do.
theory: in the beginning i think he somewhat time travels, to which the "now" version of himself appears. he then proceeds to say "hello then". i think he's referring to the old dead version of himself because that's how he was was back 'then'. he took some of his past self's experiences and lessons learned with him but leaves the ones he deems unnecessary.
The fact that this uploaded on New Years Eve makes perfect sense Now is picking up what Then had or at least what Now still wants. And going into the next year Now is anxious for what's to come, but someone tells him "You're Excited". Basically the new year is always a mystery, but on new year's day we always try to be excited for what's to come, but we all know deep down we're more anxious and nervous than excited.
Omg thank you! I was thinking about something similar to that but I couldn’t quite get to where I wanted. This is helpful and now I can’t rest without nightmares
I think this video represents the fact that people take advantage of others in order to fill the void they feel they have on their inside, and do this for self satisfaction no matter how much it may hurt themselves
@@oliveclov373 Play on words work best when, the two different things your trying to associate have the same, or at least similar meanings. In this case op was associating the chest cavity with the literal body bag in the video. The first thing I thought of was a cavity search. So I put that association out there through a dry RU-vid comment. It's kinda like a play on association, or a play on play on word if you will.
This guy Is recovering after a monumental failure in life, something like a break up, that just got worse and worse until he simply gave up and decided to start anew. He only takes the things he thinks he needs, but something is still missing.
