@@japaneseman Thanks for responding! It was for our first real life meeting. We talked for a long time online before that over video and text, and he kept saying how much he cares and all that. Just kind of interesting as that is not something I would expect in America.

Well it's mostly the context. He told me he wanted to get me a gift and asked what I would like. I said I always wanted one of those glass wind chimes like from my favorite drama (ホタルノヒカリ with Ayase Haruka) lol. He said, "oh, I will get you the expensive hand-painted kind, I know a shop that makes them. I said "you really don't have to." I actually don't like expensive gifts early on, it makes me uncomfortable. But he kept insisting he will get something special. So that's when I was a bit surprised that he said one thing, and then went to the complete opposite extreme haha. It's not a big deal, just that in America, I would feel strange buying someone special a dollar store gift. I would rather get them a cup of coffee instead or something, if we are meeting. For me it was mostly disappointing not because I want fancy or expensive gifts, but because i don't like when people say more than they mean. But each person is different I guess!

@@limwowo5902 I believe it depends on the situation. Some people will pay someone to go to a wedding or a reunion with them, just to show up with an attractive "partner". It's certainly something one should be careful with.
